More thoughts on Summoner Mahiro
Or 'I gather my thoughts together of what I attempted to cook so far'.
Mind, Mahiro is still very new, I'm still testing the waters, and there was already a lot to unpack and iron out with the AU as a whole, let alone throwing a whole ass new summoner into the mix at random, but I alluded hints of stuff cooking between Bluesky or Tag Lore, so I may as well put my thoughts together and hope it at least sounds promising.
(Also for now I'm still sticking with they/them give or take he/him, but I'm still on the fence of what to call them, so it might be subject to change there too. Presentation and pronoun-wise, they're a lot more flexible than their mii concept would imply, I'm just not sure where to go with them yet still. orz)
So, Mahiro.
Tumblr media
This dumb little dipshit on the right.
Like a lot of you got spammed with over the past month or so, that little shithead started as a random mii I made on impulse, and ended up befriending everybody (but that damn horse in particular), befriending all the summoners, and having the most friendly-dog-who-doesn't-realize-how-big-they-is energy both figuratively (always pretty hyper and perky, keeps carrying relationships through sheer will of being super needy and seeking the other summoners out, etc) or sometimes bordering on literally (LOVES to fucking dig holes, absolutely loves those bone-shaped dog biscuit grubs, keeps finding random shit out in the wild to then bring back as gifts, etc), and to this day they're still somehow reverse-pickpocketing all their friends with letters and gifts, still digging potholes and eating suspiciously-dog-treat-looking grubs, and occasionally either gravitating around whoever falls ill or falls ill themself.
Point being, how it started was they were some random throwaway mii to beef up the 10 mii headcount called for in Miitopia, proceeded to flirt with vague ideas I had about how to incorporate shit like Palworld and Monster Rancher in the mix after how hard Mahiro bent themself backwards trying to build themself as a whole ass character of their own over the course of me playing Miitopia and then some, and then seemed a little more certain they're 'The Palworld summoner (with a Monster Rancher past)' to go with the existing six (two of whom are 'The Pokemon summoners' and two others 'The Digimon summoners' already, mind), and the only issue is figuring out where and how to stick them in.
So here's how it's been going since that point.
-
So, earlier in times I vaguely mentioned Mahiro in passing, one immediate idea was that Mahiro was last found isekai'd out of Palapagos Island (the main setting of Palworld), and one of their signature monsters primarily featured two key pals:
Tumblr media
The first primary one is Direhowl, and in the same way Kyo had a similar relationship with his zacian, Ringel, being treated as a half-pet half-guardian in the way she shadows over Kyo since their reunion, Mahiro's direhowl serves as both a very quick field mount, pet, and one of the quicker pals to rise to attention, should anything immediately threaten Mahiro nearby. Not only does the wolf pal lean up on Mahiro having a lot of thematic leanings to wolves and dogs (in contrast to quite a few summoners, in particular Erin, Kyo and Ephrel, all being very cat-coded), but it also goes along with one of the quickest shows of Mahiro's past prior to being a summoner, where Mahiro's original homelands was NOT in Palapagos or the World of Pals proper, but in a second world in the World of Discs as a breeder hailing from around the loosely-defined Northern Continent instead.
Their original origin was as a breeder, and a fairly top-of-the-line one to a degree of having called some pretty strong prestige from FIMBA (short for the Fraternal International Monster Breeders' Association, they and their sibling organizations AGIMA (Age Island Monster Association) and IMa (International Monsters Association) are like region-specific equivalents to the Pokemon League), with special note going to a signature monster they made their claim of fame with...
Tumblr media
The Tiger breed. (Also known as Raiga, but for simplicity sake I'm going with Tiger here as the localized/more familiar name for those of you who might've even vaguely heard of Monster Rancher before.)
The striking similarities of the direhowl and the tiger were a large part of what made Mahiro gravitate toward direhowls, especially when their previous tiger is no longer in the picture, and (as if the notoriously heartbreaking lifespans of a disc monster wasn't already bad enough) it's heavily implied Mahiro lost their previous tiger through not-so-natural causes.
In general, Mahiro already had a lot of experience in hand-rearing and caring for creatures, of which these disc-based monsters of the Monster Rancher world are particularly demanding in how to properly care and raise them, especially if you expect them to be prime tournament competitors, so for Mahiro to find their way into Palapagos, where the pals there command somewhat similar but large parts more relaxed care by comparison, Mahiro's skills fit like a glove, and their transition from breeder to tamer went pretty smoothly.
The unfortunate cloud over their head in regards to what happened to their tiger also plays a part in their relationship with their direhowl, and for that matter their pals in general. Pals are much more durable by comparison (and save for deliberate actions, have the same general durability as a pokemon, digimon, or any other beast unit otherwise), but to say it did little to make Mahiro any less antsy whenever a pal or monster in general gets seriously injured is an understatement.
Tumblr media
The second pal Mahiro has a particularly strong affinity with is Faleris, specifically Faleris Aqua, which unpacks the other recent developments I've been ho-humming about to their backstory.
-
Before we get to that, let's explain a few things about Palworld, just so we're on the same page, especially when I'm aware a not-insignificant number tuning in who know Palworld at all probably started and ended at The really concerning bullshit going on with Nintendo being very sue happy lately "Edgelord Pokemon with guns".
Tumblr media
In Palapagos, there's very, very consistent and reoccurring hints that the island operates in its own weird, pocket dimension esque universe far and away from typical civilization, despite a lot of structures pre-existing on the island, and a lot more modern-looking tech can either be found in the wild, or straight up learned how to craft wholesale once you either learn the crafting recipe to do so, or learn it through obtaining the recipe outright and separately as its own consumable item.
There's a ton of people - from lone stragglers, to outright pockets of towns and civilizations - who all had hints of a similar isekai'd circumstance (either vaguely as washing up on shore and forgetting where or how they came of it, or a few much more bluntly outright confirming that yeah, they were isekai'd outright here), and regardless, tried to make the most of things out in the wilderness by either banding together, roughing it in the wilderness, taming pals to make the task easier, or in some cases, got killed by the wildlife and strife of the islands otherwise in the process.
It's not helped that in addition to it being a vast open season of wild pals of varying shapes, sizes, and power potential (and with it, safety risk to just walk up and approach without some prep), a number of organizations also took over entire chunks of the entirety of Palapagos, to the degree of claiming entire sections for themselves in the name of their foundations, and on top of having a leader, and an associated tower where their leader typically resides, anyone who either runs into their territory and tries to stake a claim of their own, run into them during mid-hunts, mid-treks, or unknowing rendezvous points or camps, or reached out to the towers outright, are usually met with a barrage of fire-rounds and/or swords up their ass if they didn't have their pals and/or own weapons at the ready.
Oh, and if you notice certain similarities between the towers of Palapagos, and the aesthetics of a certain book going on at time of typing.
Tumblr media
...We'll get to that when we get to that, but not this post, and in another time. (Probably when the book's outright done with in full before I plan anything and inevitably get jossed more from it.)
Tumblr media
Anyways, every tower boss can be encountered and fought with, and each of them will fight head on. A particularly thorough survivor who isekai'd into the island prior to the main player actually wrote detailed notes about each tower boss and faction they rule over, and among the highlights includes a lot of power imbalance (for instance, Zoe, the Rayne Syndicate leader (first one from the left) isn't nearly as in command of her own syndicate as to be believed, and they even turned on her and her grizzbolt more than once), some parts in-fighting among the different factions (with ominous notes about how certain ones, such as Zoe's and Lily's (second from the left) respective factions in the Rayne Syndicate and Free Pal Alliance are especially vicious to one another, yet can't even remember what started their initial feuding in the first place), and even certain tower bosses flying too close to the proverbial sun in noticing something off with Palapagos as a whole and being slowly driven insane of it (not pictured, but this is the basis of the gradual sanity slippage of Saya, the leader of the Moonflowers, and her unhealthy fixations with the moon phases when taking notice Palapagos is incapable of changing the phase of its moon, which is always a full moon).
Tumblr media
Relevant to faleris specifically, one of the tower bosses, Marcus, is effectively some parts mafioso and other parts the leader of the de-facto law enforcement of the island, known as the Palapagos Island Defense Force, or PIDF for short.
Effectively, he's a mob boss and chief of police, and for as many times as you'll hear grateful towns speaking about how he and his agents had helped safeguard towns into a semblance of stability to actually build a proper town and function, you'll hear just as many other accounts of him and his men selling drugs, then arresting people for possession of those same drugs he sold, and, oh yes, feeding his pals a nigh exclusive diet of coke when he couldn't be bothered to feed his faleris, Horus, properly, outside of whatever Horus ends up naturally hunting outright anyways (pal or humans otherwise).
And no, the coke line isn't hyperbole.
Tumblr media
Presently, Horus, a base faleris, is Marcus's current and present primary pal he'll fight with, but prior to Horus was the faleris aqua Mahiro currently has, whom Horus ends up replacing. Mahiro's faleris remains with them as a primary flying mount, as well as a pal who puts Mahiro's care and patience in full display, as having been a bird Mahiro had to struggle to break through and earn the trust of, rehabilitate from where Marcus neglected them prior to having a somewhat warmer friendship with their replacement in Horus, and both birds are strong rivals against one another ever since.
In general, the world of Palapagos is a crapshoot, and every tower boss has a lot of baggage to unpack each (and counting. When Palworld launched, the above five were the initial and only bosses, but at time of typing there's now at least 7 total, and remains to be seen how many more follows), where Mahiro, prior to being a summoner, had just as much tried to reach out to the faction leaders about as often as they've been refuted (often violently) in kind.
In some ways, Mahiro tried (and often failed) to find their own way to help them, and in many ways, was misplaced on what to even help them with, or how to even go about it really.
In other ways, it was a more selfish and desperate wish, as if struggling to try to fill in a void with these people, no matter how mismatched they were for the role.
And Mahiro was only able to let go and back off upon reaching Zenith proper. Where they met the other six summoners, though not immediately.
That wasn't to say Mahiro's cares for the tower bosses and their plights suddenly evaporated (for the ones actually willing to be helped, or even needed help in the first place, and yes, some of them do lean that way), but meeting up with the other six summoners better separated the people they were stuck with prior from the people they were actually trying to find.
-
Tumblr media
So in Zenith's current timeline, a quick headcount of where Mahiro connects to the other six.
First, there was Erin and Kyo. Both of them simultaneously walked and rebounded back from incidents of a previous failed life each, and thanks to the struggles of their past selves' lovers trying to retrace their steps and right their wrongs, were able to protect the present and current Erin and Kyo from the same pitfalls that ultimately killed the past versions those partners (Lif and Ryoma to Erin, Kamui and Lifonse to Kyo) wound up losing the first time around.
Ephrel was also brought to a Zenith that would be interconnected with their Zenith, but was killed in a freak accident involving their Breidablik.
In the process of getting Erin and Kyo settled, Teru was summoned by Erin by accident in his eldritch corrupted form after mountains of trauma finally broke him, but Erin's experience from her original world allowed her to soothe him enough to help him regain his human form and sense of stability again, and ease tensions with Kyo, whom both came from the same world, and are exes with one another.
On the flip side, Sparrow is summoned in a long and delayed response of Breidablik trying and failing to replace Ephrel with Chrom, then her, and due to Thorr and Loki (mostly Thorr) experimenting in trying to reconstruct The First Summoner Kiran in the form of a custom made forma and making a seeming dud instead, created what would eventually become Eclair, who gained his own sense of self, was given a forma soul by Kyo to escape from the Hall of Forms before he would've been erased, and thus joined the other four. A few books in and even more links to other outer worlds later, Ephrel, now restored by Freyja, reunites and catches up with the other five.
Despite Mahiro having also made it into Zenith out of Palapagos, they were cut just short of actually catching up to the other six right away, despite having touched down so early on that they could've either met up with Erin and Kyo, or even predated the two.
So what happened?
-
Tumblr media
At some point just before Book V's events (so the tail end of Ephrel having been retrieved again), that was the point Eclair would often get pulled aside by Thorr, and especially Loki, when he wasn't otherwise preparing with the other five with that book's going-ons (with what would've been Nidavellir, Jotunheimr, and the World of Digimon and World of Beasts at the same time, based on this AU's events).
Curiously, one of these outings involved Loki in particular having dragged Eclair away to go see a powerful, curious demonic beast she managed to catch and chain up within her own pocket realm, one who was heavily wolf-based, but radiating a demonic, almost vampiric energy. It went without question the thing had a sinister and vicious aura to it, and Loki made it very little secret that should that vampiric beast break free, there was no telling what would happen next, maybe even the end of the world. All she alluded to was it was a beast powerful enough to extinguish its own sun, survive and thrash the moon, and now it sits here, stewing in its own darkness like the night skies.
Eclair, as Magni or otherwise at that point, was more than capable of slaying the beast to put it out of its misery, and if not him, certainly the other five had their own ideas and ways. But wouldn't it be interesting? To see what that thing could do? She was interested in seeing what it would do in Eclair's hands at least, if he'd humor her.
And she wasn't disappointed: By this point, Eclair already knew Erin was presented with a similar start with Teru. Despite looking far more gruesome, and proving far stronger and deadlier by comparison, she offered him compassion and empathy when he needed it most, and through that, they gained a lifelong companion once he was given enough time to rest and recover.
With how much Loki emphasized so much on the dangers of this beast, Eclair was used to reading between the lines of Loki's tricks, and true to form, when this beast was similarly offered compassion, freedom, and care, it reverted into a familiar, albeit vampiric Mahiro, and all the details Loki 'forgot' to elaborate on properly.
Tumblr media
In Bluesky, I mentioned hints here and there of it: Long ago, in another life, Mahiro knew a past incarnation of the other summoners. All six of them, including - shocking of all to them - Eclair as well. Remember, Eclair was a forma, and one built as an incomplete mishmash of Kiran and Thorr that was so jumbled together that he became his own being from borrowed parts. So Mahiro's suggestion to the contrary would be one of the few times Eclair's existence might've been more fate-based than originally thought.
They were close companions, possibly even romantic. They fought against dark entities, in particular a cursed spirit who went on to cause chaos and war with monsters who were controlled by faces ripped away and slapped onto them to bestow more power onto them to attack the numerous territories of their homelands at. Palworld and Monster Rancher might've been Mahiro's more recent stomping grounds in their present life since, but they actually remembered their life from a third world of origin and a different life than the monster-handling one they have now: The World of Miis, the land of Miitopia.
When Loki mentioned they extinguished the sun, thrashed the moon, and became as dark as the night sky, it was an incredibly skewed-on-purpose way of her to tell Eclair of how he became her chained off pet demon-hound:
At some point, all the other summoners faded away, the details of which aren't entirely revealed (and isn't helped that clearly, whatever happened to them that tore them all away was too painful for Mahiro to even recount yet, even into the present). In a desperate wish to want to reunite with them, Mahiro became a vampire, and in ways similar to what gave the Dark Curse such power and presence to empower itself enough to take on its many Dark Lord forms, Mahiro was so desperate to reunite with the other six, that they were willing to sacrifice, not just their face, but their humanity more than their vampiric state already drove them to, just on the chance to see them and reunite them again.
So Mahiro was cursed to let his previous powers already inherent as part of the vampire class go well past overclocked, but wound up further left to Loki's whims and mercy when their previous dealings left them flung out in a new life in the outer worlds in general, but no closer to any of the six (prior to Zenith bridging that gap), and only deepening their wounds and grief after earlier confusing the tower bosses for their previous companions in a haze of desperation.
They extinguished their sun (disconnected from their brighter and calmer world and life in Miitopia), thrashed the moon (their feudings against the tower bosses, and perhaps more literally against Saya and Selyne), and became darker than the night sky (completely lost in their own pit of despair after long term consistent needling).
Even worse, while Loki agreed to help Mahiro in reuniting with the other summoners, she only did so in the most technical sense, where not only had she played with Mahiro's grief and emotions to the point they had a nervous breakdown and transformed in the state they were at, but remained trapped in stasis in that state, meanwhile having been far too late to reconnect with the summoners, each of them having already found and paired off in their own supports by the time she showed her hand and tried to trick Eclair into killing them. Adding salt to the wounds, although Mahiro retained full memories of their past history as adventurers across Miitopia, none of the other summoners had any memories of this past life prior (with one exception we'll get into).
They finally did get the reunion that they wanted, but even when Mahiro is no longer lovers with the collective six, just seeing them at all - and far closer to their past lives than the tower bosses no less - was already enough to make it worth all the pain and fights to them. And through this, and through being grounded enough to calm their nerves (as Teru had likewise), were able to lend their strength in the form of their pals, offering even more monster-related supports on top of what four of the six offered similarly. They would eventually walk back on navigating around how to deal with the tower bosses back in one of their 'homes', but not before coming to terms with where they all were in between defending Zenith alongside the Order of Heroes.
-
Tumblr media
But there was also one other detail I mentioned prior. Earlier on, I mentioned before of how all the other six summoners had excellent singing skills, though are particularly at their best if they sing in unison, be it with each other, or getting others involved.
Mahiro, by comparison, was the one exception of being notably bad at it. At least at first. Unlike the other six who already had skills in singing in the first place (just different levels of willingness to actually demonstrate such straight away), Mahiro was the one exception of not having initially started off with great singing skills by comparison, and even being so bad as to bring down the quality of singing, should they end up joining in with the other six in their ongoing song. While Mahiro does get better, it was a growing pain demonstrated over time, eventually.
Remember how in Miitopia, not only were there at least three checkpoints where the Dark Lord would kidnap your party members (effectively resetting your whole team), but also locked you out of your current job two of those three times, effectively making you start over that too with a new one?
And remember how certain jobs - namely Popstar or Chef - were talent-based jobs instead of traditional RPG jobs, and were also just as susceptible to that forced restart as well?
The idea was that given everything else Mahiro is heavily implied to have sacrificed in the name of earning a chance to spend another lifetime with the other six summoners again, one of those payments involved their inherent hobby talents, including singing. There are three very key exceptions of songs they can sing without issue, but it's only very short snippets (about the same length and song as the songs typically sang by miis in Inn events and the Karaoke outings), and any new song they try to sing from then on will otherwise have to rely on Mahiro having to re-learn how to sing to do it correctly otherwise.
Those three melodies - the theme of the princess, the theme of easin hills, and the ballad of the fab fairies - were ingrained enough in Mahiro's heart to break through Mahiro's past curse-related scars, just through the strength of the memories they attached to those songs alone, and not coincidentally, those three tunes also ended up being the strongest evidence to prove Mahiro's credibility to the other summoners.
Not only do all six summoners also know these three melodies despite having not heard or sang them prior to Mahiro singing them first, (as far as their supports were aware) but once Mahiro reminded them of those songs by singing it to them, those memories stirred something instinctive in them that unearthed, and they were all able to demonstrate how they could outright sing even longer parts of the song than Mahiro was capable of singing (or in the ballad's case, demonstrate they knew how to approach the song from a group standpoint, something Mahiro wouldn't be able to pull off by themself).
The only other thought closing this out otherwise was that of the six, Mahiro knew Erin first and longest, while they met Eclair last (though still knew him well). Whether or not I do something like it (like whether to keep Mahiro exclusive in their own circle, or straight up just lump them together with at least one of the other ones, I'm still not sure yet.
Tumblr media
Although there's something equally funny and morbid of lumping them together with Erin in particular, given how despite being Mahiro's first, now she's tied to a god who literally either steals people's faces too, or superimposes her own face onto them. Can't really catch a break, can they...

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I forgot where i was going with these when i started throwing this draft together... It's weird to me that the series originally had this really specific and kind of unique mediterranean setting
the FIMBA's region is clearly Italian, playing off the coliseum's central role in the game
IMa's little island feels very reminiscent of the santorini caldera in the greek isles, in spite of its location relative to FIMBAs italian peninsula
And the AGIMA region being a more generic island, but one where they rather conspicuously use Greek text in a way the other two regions didn't (if you look closely at the letterhead on the mail you can see that AGIMA is actually spelled with a Gamma(Γ) and not a G: ΑΓΙΜΑ)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But then MR3's shift backwards in the timeline to the setting's pangean continent breaks away from any recognizable geography, even just as a loose inspiration. And EVO's jump to just a completely different continent with, like, vaguely African(?) geography, but also a Japanese island at the end??, and then The Moon... all just kinda threw that uniqueness out the window.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If anything it could have been really cool to expand the Monster Rancher universe along the Silk Road; thru Turkey and the north of Africa, and into Arabia and Persia. In a way, EVO starting off at what ought to have been a loose equivalent of north Africa right on the costs of the mediterranean could have been a really neat way to still retain that connection to the old games, but then they kind of don't lean into that at all somehow? If anything EVO's region feels really weak in terms of theming, and the few traces of a kind of attempted "ethic" flare are honestly just kind of offensive.
I think the only thing I really managed to take inventory of in all this was that they stuck to the pretty standard JRPG routine of cramming way too many too diverse biomes into a single region... there's always
a sandy desert(with pyramids)
a kind of tropical beach
a jungle or rain forest(often with south american vibes??)
a snowy mountain range
but also a weird variety of temperate regions; sometimes a forest, sometimes hills, or plains/flatlands, oddly they only very late in the series started adding caves into the explorable dungeon lineup, even though those feel pretty basic. The ever present theme of ruins and exploration do go from being subsets of other biomes into being sort of their own environments. The initially very light steam punk elements --only really present in the freezing/combining labs-- do eventually get ramped up to full on factory towns and factory dungeons.
I think I had been intending to gather all these maps together first, and then try to distill some kind of formula from them to outline some sense of what a typical Monster Rancher region looks like, and what the parameters of making a fan region or Monster Rancher-like would really entail, but I don't know that I really got that information out of things in the end...
So i guess just have these this random collection of thoughts

"The agi-mafia isn't real, it can't hurt you."
The agi-mafia:
Tumblr media
for context I heard once that the korean word for grandma or old woman is Agima (Ah-jee-mah for those who have trouble pronouncing words which's sound is translated from another language). In Korea, people over 50 seem to just not care if there is a car coming. If there is an agima in the road, you better slam on the brakes because she isn't moving until shes done doing what she's doing. When they come in large groups, my family jokingly calls them the agimafia because we swear they are trying to get people killed. I'm not sure how correct I am about the word but it stuck and I'm keeping it because it's funny.

(Feitiço para invocar a chuva.)
Olhe para o céu e fale:
"FORÇAS MÍSTICAS EIS O CHAMADO, DEIXEM O CÉU TODO ENUVIADO, SEJA VIR OU SEJA IR CONVOCAMOS A CHUVA A CAIR, NO CÉU ACIMA O SOL SUMIU E AS MELODIAS AGORA GUVIE, QUE O CÉU AGIMA CAUSE INCÔMODO E CAIA CHUVA SOBRE TODOS."

Autumn and summer, the past and the present of Agima. The old red heart and the new blue soul, a soul of a magical and mystical story. Sweet dreams everyone...  Agima the Star and the Abyss   6A00-001A-1D74

For the drabble prompts: Flametail and Kirara. "Unexpected friendship"
It had taken a lot of prodding of the Rhodes Interior Manager to allow Kirara to set up her little vintage arcade room.
Video games were not exactly the biggest past time among the mostly Ursus, Kazdelian and Yan operators employed at Rhodes, and those from Victoria and Leithania mostly stuck to their own brand of Agima and Itara home computers, which left Kirara's little collection of old arcade cabinets still collecting dust after they were finally set up.
Every week she came in to do some general maintenance on the decade old CRTs, lubricating the sticks and buttons, replacing springs if necessary. She kept them working for a crowd of one, but it was solid work, and validating effort.
And then one day she came in hearing voices, and the clicking of buttons.
"...See what's so special?"
"It's just... the pizza shop where I used to live had this same game!"
"You had a pizza shop in your district?"
"Yeah, he always sold cheap slices to me and the other kids, and- oh, are you the owner here?!"
The two Zalaks camped at one of her space shooter cabinets spotted her and waved, with the red haired one quickly looking back to the screen.
"Everything was on freeplay, so, I just assumed it was open to everyone... I'm Sona, and this is Ashley!"
Kirara nodded, smiled, and put her tool bag down at the door before walking up behind the two, with Ashlock moving to the side so she could get a view of the play area.
"Oh, you're doing quite well!"
Flametail grinned. "I wanna beat the highscore here!"
Kirara chuckled. "I... would love to see that."
