How to tell if your eSim has been activated: Airalo app

Note: These instructions are for the iPhone app. If the Android app is different please let me know and send screenshots.

Open the Airalo app on your phone. Click the button that reads “My eSims” in the middle of the bottom menu.

You will be led to a page that has all of the non-expired eSims you have purchased. Choose a plan and click “details” on the bottom right.

Scroll down to the section titled “my packages” (under the “usage” section). An inactive eSim will have an orange rectangle reading “Not Activated.”

An activated eSim will instead have a green rectangle reading “Active.”

Don’t let a plan expire if data is still being used! Just before the validity is up, click the button at the bottom left of the plan that says “Top up,” click "Buy" on one of the plans on the "Buy Top-up Packages" page that comes up, then check out.

How do I know which plan is which?

If you’ve sent multiple eSims from the same app to the Connecting Humanity team, some are active and some aren’t, and you’re not sure which e-mail to reply to to tell the team that that plan is still inactive—

The way I did this is by visually comparing QR codes. On the “details” page for an inactive plan, click “View Instructions” under where it says “eSIM installation.”

At the top of the page, under where it says “View Instructions,” toggle over to “QR code.”

Now find the e-mail for an Airalo plan that you sent to gazaesims during October, November, or the first two weeks of December and visually compare to see if the QR code matches. If it does, then that means this plan is not yet active, and you should send a reply to this e-mail to let the team know.

If you can't visually compare QR codes, take a screenshot of both QR codes and upload the image files to an online QR code reader to get the data they're encoding in a text format; then compare the text to see if it matches.

Das Schweizproblem, vielleicht ist es gelöst

Im Zug geschieht kurz hinter der Schweizer Grenze dasselbe wie schon oft, z.B. am 28. September 2017:

Einige Meter hinter der Grenze merke ich, dass ich vergessen habe, von Deutschland aus den Auslands-Spezialtarif zu buchen, der für die Schweiz nach wie vor nötig ist. Um ihn zu buchen, braucht man Internet.

Und zwar nicht irgendwelches Internet, sondern Handyinternet von AldiTalk. Aber weil ich schon in der Schweiz bin, kann ich nicht mehr ins AldiTalk-Internet und also auch nicht die Reise-Option buchen, die ich bräuchte, um in der Schweiz ins Internet zu können. 1 GB würde € 5,99 kosten, wenn ich es kaufen könnte.

Ich habe für das Schweizproblem im Lauf der Jahre viele verschiedene Lösungen gefunden: eine Schweizer SIM kaufen (2013), eine andere Schweizer SIM kaufen (2014), kein Internet haben (2016), die britische SIM verwenden (2017) oder rechtzeitig ans Buchen der Reise-Option von AldiTalk denken (manchmal).

Diesmal ist meine Erinnerung an die eSIM-Werbung auf der kroatischen Fähre noch frisch. Ich recherchiere, wie das mit dem Wechseln von eSIMs funktioniert. Offenbar kann man sie einfach aktivieren und deaktivieren, nachdem man sie dem Handy einmal beigebracht hat. Den mit der Post zugeschickten QR-Code meiner deutschen eSIM werde ich dazu nicht mehr brauchen, ich kann also sorglos wechseln.

Ich suche nach eSIM Schweiz und gelange zu airalo.com, einem Anbieter für eSIMs für viele Länder. Ich bin etwas skeptisch, weil die Schweiz ja beim SIM-Kauf einen Ausweis sehen möchte, aber von komplizierter Freischaltung steht da nichts und schlimmstenfalls, denke ich, habe ich $10 für einen Techniktagebuchbeitrag über das Scheitern ausgegeben statt für eine Schweizer eSIM mit 3 GB Daten.

Ich bezahle via PayPal, bekomme einen QR-Code zur Aktivierung der eSIM angezeigt und werde gewarnt, dass der Aktivierungsvorgang nur dann funktionieren wird, wenn ich Internet habe. Hier reicht jetzt aber irgendeines, zum Beispiel das WLAN der SBB.

In den SIM-Einstellungen meines Handys gibt es die Option, eine weitere eSIM durch Scannen des QR-Codes hinzuzufügen. Das mache ich. Das Handy zeigt an, dass ich jetzt Schweizer Mobilfunkinternet (von der Firma Salt) habe, und ich teile meine Freude mit der Techniktagebuch-Redaktion:

Gerade habe ich im Zug erst nach der Schweizer Grenze gemerkt (wie schon sehr oft), dass meine SIM ja nur in Europa funktioniert, also nicht in der Schweiz. Dann habe ich (am Laptop, im Zug-WLAN) eine eSIM gekauft und aktiviert und jetzt habe ich Schweizer Internet, ganz ohne mühsames Herumlaufen und Ausweisvorzeigen! Es ist rätselhaft und schön!

Gleich danach merke ich, dass es sich um ein Trug-Internet handelt, durch das in Wirklichkeit gar keine Daten fließen. Es dauert eine Dreiviertelstunde, in der ich verschiedene Dinge ausprobiere und an der Seriosität von Airalo zweifle. Danach geht es dann wirklich.

Man muss den APN selbst eintragen und vor allem muss man ihn dann auch speichern. Die Speichern-Funktion ist kontraintuitiv hinter dem Dreipunktemenü versteckt. Das steht aber alles in der von Airalo mitgelieferten Anleitung.

Ich glaube, jetzt habe ich das "Internet in der Schweiz"-Level durchgespielt. Unpraktisch ist nur noch, dass die durch die Airalo-SIM ersetzte eSIM die von AldiTalk ist, an deren Nummer alles für mich Wichtige seit 2014 hängt. Lieber würde ich temporär die andere SIM meines Dual-SIM-Systems auswechseln, die ich ausschließlich für Internet benutze und deren Nummer ich nie irgendwo angegeben habe. So habe ich es bisher im Ausland immer gemacht. Das geht aber nicht, weil die historisch unwichtigere (für meinen Internetzugang ist sie die wichtigere) SIM eine physische Karte ist. Ich konnte im Januar nur eine der beiden SIMs auf eSIM umstellen, die von AldiTalk. Bei der von Freenet Funk wird es nach wie vor nicht angeboten:

Auch wenn es anders wäre, hätte ich nichts davon, denn mein Handy hat eben nur einen Slot für eine physische SIM-Karte und einen für eine eSIM. Aber das sind jetzt wirklich Luxusprobleme.
