They also play an important role in diaphragmatic breathing. Keeping back the tongue resting high up on the palate, helps in keep the airway wide open.

Hello, all. It's me, the guy who writes really long airline livery effortposts. You may notice that it's been a while. Like, over a month.
I don't want to dwell on the details, but I have a mood disorder and have been spending the first bit of this year in a severe depressive episode. I think the roughest bit has been how each passing day makes this post more and more awkward to write, feeding into itself infinitely.
I wanted to put this up on its own, without any actual posts to distract from it, but I'll be putting up part three of British Airways on Monday and responding to old asks over the next few days. That aside, though, consider the schedule to be 'posts go up when they're done' for...however long it takes for me to regain full function. I'm very sorry for the radio silence until now.

Genuine curiosity. What is a speech-language pathologist? What do you do?
Thanks for asking! I love what I do (most days), but never have an opportunity to really talk about it. I hope you're prepared for a long response, because our scope of practice is under a very large umbrella. In a broad sense, speech-language pathologists are professionals with expertise in assessing, diagnosing, and treating impairments with communication, voice, swallowing, and cognition. We work with people across the life span, birth to 99+ to strengthen or rehabilitate skills within these domains. The setting you decide to work in will determine the clients/patients you treat.
SLPs in the school setting work with children with varying communication and language disorders/deficits. They might work on articulation to help a child be better understood so they communicate with their teachers and peers, work with a child who is struggling to acquire developmentally appropriate language skills and is struggling academically, they can play a role in diagnosing and treating dyslexia, they work with children who are nonverbal to develop a way for that child to express themselves/wants/needs/etc, whether that be low tech alternative communication like a communication board or gestures to high-tech options like a speech generating device, and then help those kids acquire the vocabulary and language skills needed to effectively communicate.
In the medical setting, SLPs work with people who have had a stroke or brain injury and have lost the ability to communicate, swallow, or safely live alone because their executive function skills are impaired. They might have aphasia and either can't get the words out, or don't understand what is being said to them, or a combo of the two. They might have dysphagia, where their swallowing muscles might be weaker and not as effective in protecting their airway or propelling food to the right "tube" when eating and drinking. We also work with people who have been intubated long enough to require a tracheostomy and no longer have a way to talk. With these patients, we assess if they are appropriate for a speaking valve, which is an important step for communicating and eventually eating by mouth again.
In an outpatient clinic or private practice they will work on much of the above, but this setting is where you will see a lot of voice client/patients. SLPs can assess and treat functional voice disorders (typically caused by misuse, overuse, or poor vocal hygiene). SLPs play a role in gender-affirming voice therapy, teaching these client to acquire the mannerisms and vocal quality of the gender they align with in a way that won't be damaging to the vocal cords.
For me in particular, I work in acute care. I assess critically ill patients to make sure they are not at a high risk for aspirating (their food or drink going "the wrong way" into their airway), and that they can communicate with their family and care team. My areas of expertise are working with tracheostomy patients, and in the Neonatal ICU where we focus on pre-feeding/feeding skills and making sure they are meeting the developmental milestones they missed out on in utero.
This is by no means and exhaustive list of what we do, but it's what you're likely going to see the most if working with an SLP. There are so many things we treat under each of those domains, but we could be here all day and I've kept you long enough.

THIS IS MADE TO MAKE PEOPLE AWARE OF DISSOCIATIVE SEIZURES!!!! And the end has info on how to help anyone having a seizure.
One thing I hate about our mf symptoms of this disorder if a dissociative seizures we have, we have probably only had 3 or 4 but I FUCKING hate it. I actually hate it so much the fact I was in and out of conciousness isn't fun I don't like being aware that I'm actually having some sort of uncontrollable convolsuti9n of my body I can't fucking function as a normal sober being because of thise fucking disorder.
Dissociative seizures arnt fun. They are horrible you are constantly in and out of conciousness during them. Its like a normal seizures but there isn't alot of physical set backs. I feel like dissociative seizures arnt talked enough about when it comes to having a dissociative disorder. Not everyone has dissociative seizures but we tend to have them very rarely.
I just kind of wanted to share our experiences with it because I don't really see it talked about alot, we usually have full body conversations when it happens and we have very little time to really realise when it starts happening, we might go into something like a dazed ish state and than we just start having full body shaking and convulsions, we can't verbally speak but we tend to be in and out of awareness when it's happens, we have only had them for maybe 1-3minutes long and during that state we are completely in and out of conciousness, we sometimes can feel ourself shaking and convulsing but can't stop it, it stops naturally after abit and we tend to be quite blurry and out of it afterwards. It's scary due to the fact we are in and out of being able to tell what's happening.
What to do when someone is seizing?
If you witness someone having ANY sort of seizure you need to take action immediately. Unfortunately every time we have had one of these events we have been completely alone and we have learnt how to deal with seizures in other people due to our father. When someone is undergoing any sort of seizure you need to turn them on their side to make sure if they throw up it is not going to block their air way. It is best to call 911 / 000 or whatever emergency number your country has asap, you will want to time the seizure, this is important information for the paramedics! and you need to make sure the person is breathing still and has a clear airway. Normally seizures will only last a few minutes in most cases. You need to make sure the person Is held on their side the whole time, the person who is seizing might come out of the seizure before the paramedics come. You need to make sure they stay put as after a seizure people will becomes extremely confused and unaware of their surroundings, they may try to walk away and leave the area. Make sure they stay put till paramedics are on scene this is important as they need to be sent to hospital for testing to figure out what caused a seizure.
People can have multiple types of seizures where they either tense up or tend to throw their limbs outwards, be careful when handling anyone undergoing a siezure as it is quite serious for both you and the person undergoing it!!!
Please be aware of this. It can happen to anyone for any reason whether it be a epileptic siezure ot any other kind! Be smart. Save lives <3

Acquired angioedema (AAE) is defined as a deficiency in the C1 esterase inhibitor.
It is a rare disorder characterized by recurring angioedema without urticaria that may be linked to lymphoproliferative disorders (LPD).
Acquired angioedema is classified into two types: AAE-I and AAE-II.
AAE results from an acquired deficiency of (C1-INH), which can be caused by consumption (type 1) or inactivation (type 2).
This increased catabolism can be caused by an autoimmune disorder (such as systemic lupus erythematosus) or a malignant tumor (such as lymphoma).
The primary symptom is swelling usually affects the face, mouth, and upper airways which can be severe. Itching and urticaria don’t occur.
Clinicians should suspect acquired C1 inhibitor deficiency or hereditary angioedema if angioedema is not accompanied by urticaria, recurs without apparent cause, or is triggered by local trauma.
Hereditary angioedema (types 1 and 2) or acquired C1 inhibitor deficiency is confirmed by: –
Low C4 levels, even between episodes.
Decreased C1 inhibitor level or function.
Treatment options include: –
Plasma-derived or recombinant C1-INH for acute attacks.
Icatibant which alleviate AAE symptoms and was well tolerated.
Ecallantide is used in the treatment of AAE and is also considered another treatment option for patients who have developed resistance to C1-INH replacement.
Fresh frozen plasma (FFP) may be used if neither of these treatments is available.

Freylich Syndrome is categorized by an increase of glycoproteins in the brain, as well as frequent nosebleeds. It’s a syndrome that typically kills those that have it in their late teens to early twenties. There are no other noticeable symptoms of the syndrome, like learning disorders or other physical anomalies.
Glycoproteins are the molecules that comprise protein and carbohydrate chains that are involved in physiological functions like immunity. As such, characters that are given this syndrome would likely not get sick from any other diseases such as the common cold or chicken pox.
The cause of death for Freylich Syndrome was left somewhat ambiguous in the show, and could possibly because the glycoproteins were being rapidly killed off for an unknown reason, or more likely, some sort of injury in the brain that can cause the fatal nosebleed. (Most fatal nosebleeds are caused by a torn internal carotid artery, or because the bleed blocks the airway, causing the person to asphyxiate.)
