You might think breathing through your mouth isn’t a big deal, but it actually is. A lot of us end up breathing through our mouth without even realizing it, which can significantly impact our overall health including but not limited to our airway health, quality of sleep, posture, heart health, dental health and even our facial structure. Myofunctional therapy aims to fix bad habits like breathing through the mouth, the low tongue posture and incorrect swallowing.

Tongue tie is more than just a metaphor for stumbling over your words. It is an oral condition that can cause issues right from infancy like difficult breastfeeding, impact your child’s airway(breathing and sleep) and affect speech, posture and dental health. In adults, it could lead to Orofacial pain and TMJ dysfunction, snoring, headaches, pain in the shoulder, neck and back.

Be it a kid or an adult – everyone can get braces. Your oral health contributes to your overall health, and if your mouth isn’t feeling good, chances are your entire body won’t feel good either. People who require braces often see the benefits that they provide.

While snoring is quite common among children and adults, snoring at any age is not normal. Snoring is a result of obstruction to the airway that limits the free passage of airflow causing vibrations that are often heard as a snore. The reasons for airway obstruction may be due to tongue ties, narrow upper jaw, elongated soft palate, backwardly positioned lower jaw, tonsil or adenoids. Snoring can also be a warning sign for obstructive sleep apnea – a type of sleep disorder. Thus, it’s best to treat snoring at the earliest possible before it severely impacts your health.

For children, sleep is essential for their overall physical, cognitive, emotional, and behavioural development. When a child snores, it is a cause of concern for parents as it can affect their quality of sleep. More importantly, sleeping with an open mouth or snoring at any age is not normal, and in children, it could lead to paediatric sleep-disordered breathing (SDB). Mouth breathing during sleep is one of the early signs of SDB, which could progress to snoring and sleep apnea.

The Temporomandibular Joint is made up of bone, muscle, nerve and cartilage. Dysfunction in any of these structures can contribute to a disorder in the joint. One of the most common causes of a TM Disorder is neuro-muscular dysfunction, where the various muscles connected to the neck, face and head spasm painfully.

The primary goal of breath retraining is to normalise each aspect of breathing pattern that is the rate, rhythm, volume, mechanics and use of the nose for all situations like when awake, asleep, at rest, during eating, speech and exercise. The specific goal of breath retraining is to achieve physiologically normal nasal breathing 95% of the day and night since mouth breathing can have detrimental impacts on on an overall health.

The tongue is a mighty muscle essential for sucking, swallowing, eating, drinking, chewing, breathing, speech, jaw growth and even plays a role in improving digestion. Tongue ties or lip ties can affect all these functions. It can also hamper breastfeeding, which is considered crucial not just in terms of weight gain for the infant, but also for developing the right tongue function for correct airway and jaw development.
