AI And The Janus Effect

My bank sent me a generic message about security upgrades to their electronic system.  They left a line in their message for feedback.  Mine was, “I hate change!” Security improvements are necessary, I know, because technology changes faster than Clark Kent can shed his business suit in a telephone booth. Even the booths have changed.  I do try to keep up.  Yesterday, I forced myself to read an article on the many languages of computer coding. There are two main types. Imperative programming requires line-by-line instructions for the computer to follow. Functional programming uses mathematical equations that allow machines to create the steps. (“Do the Math,” by Sheon Han, Wired, July/Aug 2024, pgs. 14-15.) Another article was an author’s confession about his excessive use of his smartphone.  (“Screen Saver,” by Aaron Gordon, Wired, July/Aug 2004, pgs. 18-19.) After many attempts to curb his addiction, he decided the simplest method was to bury his gadget in his backpack to make it less accessible. A third article, this one about Artificial Intelligence (AI), advised that the new technology had opened a Wild West where two philosophical camps were emerging. One camp feared AI’s potential for mischief and wanted government regulation.   The second dreaded bureaucratic intrusion more than emerging technology.  Should we have regulated the Wright brothers’ attempts at human flight for fear an airplane might crash? As I am more likely to worry than hope, I discounted the analogy.  It lacked scale.  One airplane falling from the sky is a tragedy for the crew and passengers, but AI’s ability to change human history could lead to a global catastrophe.  Look how gunpowder’s invention turned out.  As I am a coward, I’m drawn to the arguments of Vinod Khosla a leading voice for rules …setting a regulatory framework now could mean, literally, life or death for millions. (“Boom or Doom,” by Alex Konrad, Forbes, June/July 2004 pg. 102) Like the man who hid his smartphone from himself, I’ve found most homo sapiens struggle to control their impulses and often without success.  Money or the hope of obtaining it often poisons the well. In the early days of computing,  Open-source software like  Linux was the standard.  People shared what they learned and developed. Then Apple and Microsoft decided to privatize their systems.  That move changed the computing landscape. Whether it was for good or ill, I can’t say. OpenAI is a new company that tried to return to the “share” model.  That was before Elon Musk became a major investor.  Today, the company has kept its name, but it has gone private.  (Ibid, pg. 99.) The race to dominate AI has grown to a global scale, dragging behind it a myriad of dangers. China and the United States are among the fiercest competitors. China may be a little ahead of us, in fact. It has convinced 36 countries to participate in its training sessions. The most popular among these are programs developed to control the media and internet information. Western countries worry these states will adopt Chinese norms and technologies that suppress political and civil liberties. (“China’s Alternative Order,” by Elizabeth Economy, Forbes, May/June 2024, pg. 17.) With the genii out of the bottle, even AARP is looking to the future.  For those of us who are age 50 and beyond, it offers tutorials on how to use the new technology yet protect against fraud.  But technology is fluid as I’ve said.  Today’s safeguards may become tomorrow’s vulnerabilities.  (“AARP And Artificial Intelligence” AARP Bulletin, June 2024, pg. 36). From my perspective, experts on both sides of the regulation argument have got it wrong.  The competition isn’t between open or closed sources or China and the West.  The split is within ourselves.  I refer to the divide between our good intentions and self-interest.

I wanted to give you this idea for Alex Curze, what if you gave him three talons on his wings, now hear me out, this would allow him to pick stuff up with his wings and be a menace if you trying to pry him off of something, now you can ignore this, but I thought why not drop this idea to you. That’s not a bad idea! In fact I had considered something like that when I was first designing him but I was inspired by someone in my class to keep the one fingered design.

They themselves only have one finger on each hand and when they first saw me drawing little Alex they adored him. They’re actually the ones who gave me the inspiration to give Alex specialized combat and accommodations!

On a brisk day in October 2022, I went on a walk with a friend to talk about life and early stage investing, and it ended with us watching ducks together. I explained how my non-traditional background—being from the south, working on a shop floor, and driving GE's migration to the public cloud— influenced my perspective on investing in code, capital, and culture. She soon introduced me to Wiley Jones. 

Wiley is a world class engineer who had entrepreneurial exposure via Sprite Robotic (acquired by Apple), Verkada, and Athelas. His earned insight was forged over years thanks to time spent as a hardware engineer on both sides of the supply chain. He uses that experience and empathy as the north star for building Odonata Doss. 

Wiley asked Arnav Misra, Bay Area local legend who was a co-conspirator at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, to join as his co-founder. Arnav was familiar with building systems of record, selling to enterprises, and scaling under pressure thanks to time at Siteline, Rubrik, and Uber. 

I came to the ERP market with a bit of empathy and an inside view. I spent half a decade at GE Aviation, where we used both Oracle and SAP, and worked within the supply chain as IT manager in Batesville, MS. My time in Mississippi needs a 30 for 30 documentary - a story for another day. 

I was lucky to partner with the Doss team pre-product at the seed stage and become one of their core investors of record.

There is something magical about a team having clarity on day zero, great partnership, and meeting customers where they are while helping them dream bigger. In the last two years, Doss devised a novel ERP architecture designed for both humans and LLMs. Under the hood, the platform is entirely composable. It’s a loosely connected collection of databases, cloud services, and workflows. 

We live in a world where COVID exposes the fragility of every single supply chain. As a result, supply chain technology was forcefully propelled into the future. There's now more technology on the shop floor/warehouse/factory, an acceptance of the cloud, and the curiosity of AI.

P.E. Hockey Tournament

i wanted to join in the hockey tournament so i joined tristan and adams team since they were the only ones with an open spot, ms tocci asked justin if he wanted to join our team and mf just said "idk" so ms tocci asked again and just "idk" she got annoyed and then thats when adam decided to bail and join alex and euan in their pickleball game. me and tristan awkwardly walked towards the eighth graders who were arguing with each other already and ms tocci walked over to get the teams situated, they had 6 players because JUSTIN had joined their team and we had 2. the eighth graders decided to vote someone out and everyone immediately voted out preston. his bro who he's a LITTLE too comfortable with, evan, got mad and said "hey thats not fair you didnt let preston vote hes the best goalie" max replied "it doesnt matter its 3 against 1" evan replied "WELL ACTUALLY ITS 3 AGAINST 2" corbett rolled his eyes and said "its still fucking majority" they argued more while me and tristan stared at ms tocci, who was not doing anything. ms tocci finally notices and turns to the kids and says preston and evan, you join their team. they hold hands and skip to our side. 😬.. preston tells me to be goalie and hands me a giant stick that is taller than me. thanks bro. i block all the shots except 1 i hear someone yelling from in front of me so i look up "IT WAS RIGHT THERE WHY DIDNT YOU BLOCK IT YOU FUCKING PUSSY JACKASS" evan yells. i flip him off and preston takes the stick back . the final score is 7-1. preston is the absolute WORST goalie and evan praises him for it. tristan starts shrieking and crying like a baby and tells preston hes a fucking moron and hits him with his stick everybody starts fighting and at that point the eighth graders just started shoving into us even though we're the teammates and they start passing the ball with their hands even though its shitting HOCKEY the 8th graders obviously do not know how to play so tristan screams and breaks his stick on his knee and runs away im done too so i quit the game preston and evan hide in the closet and the others hit eachother with sticks. when i come back from using the bathroom i hang out with konrad and therm. therm is bashing his head into a wall and konrad is lecturing him. we run through the 8ths graders new flyers game and leo pummels the ball into my stomach and screams "GET THE FUCK OUT OF OUR GAME YOU STUPID SHITTY LITTLE FUCKING KIDS GO KILL YOURSELF." middle school is full of such wholesome cutie patooties

Netzwerk „ECOP AFRIKA“ gewinnt Meeresschutzpreis „ocean tribute” Award 2024 auf der boot Düsseldorf

Gemeinsame Initiative zum Schutz der Meere

Mit der Initiierung des „ocean tribute“ Award haben sich die die boot Düsseldorf, die monegassische Fürst Albert II Stiftung und die Deutsche Meeresstiftung ein klares Ziel gesetzt: Menschen, Projekte oder Initiativen bei ihrem Einsatz für den Meeresschutz zu unterstützen. Seit 2018 wird der mit 20.000 € dotierte Preis jährlich im Rahmen der BLUE MOTION NIGHT verliehen. Der diesjährige Preisträger ist das Netzwerk „ECOP AFRICA“ – mit der Vision einer naturbasierten Kohlenstoffentfernung und nachhaltiger Aquakultur in Afrika. Stellvertretend für die Initiative nahm Peter Teye Busumprah aus Ghana den Preis in Empfang. „ECOP AFRICA“ setzt sich für einen gesunden Ozean ein, indem das Netzwerk beispielsweise Meeresökosysteme repariert und neu aufbaut. Die ECOP-Mitglieder aus verschiedensten afrikanischen Ländern entwickeln Strategien zur Unterbindung der illegalen, nicht gemeldeten und unregulierten Fischerei.  Dafür bieten sie eine Echtzeitüberwachung und Strategien für eine nachhaltige Aquakultur an. „ECOP AFRICA“ nutzt zudem das indigene Wissen über die Ozeane und setzt es für Klimaschutzmaßnahmen ein. Nicht zuletzt entwickeln die Mitglieder Kommunikationsprogramme zum Thema Meer, um die Armut in den Ländern zu bekämpfen. Laudator Frank Schweikert, Vorstand Deutsche Meeresstiftung, verkündete das Ergebnis aus Jury- und Public-Voting: „Herzlichen Glückwunsch an ECOP AFRICA und ihr wunderbares Engagement für den Meeresschutz. Oktober 2023 - Hotel Restaurant Zum Ochsenkopf

Der Oktober-Stammtisch führte uns an den Rand des 14. Bezirkes in das Hotel Restaurant Ochsenkopf. Vom Schottenhof kommend biegt man beim Kreisverkehr nacht rechts in Richtung Rieglerhütte. Auf der rechten Seite ca. 400 Meter nach Michels Gartenmarkt, befindet sich das Gasthaus, welches seit dem Jahr 1948 im Besitz der Familie Konrad ist. Wer auch immer das sein mag!

Das Service wird auf der Homepage gelobt, was wir nur bestätigen können. Der Kellner, ausgestattet mit einem guten Wiener-Schmäh und schon bissl eingespritzt, war wirklich top. Man musste nie lange auf die Speisen und Getränke warten – so soll es sein!

Kulinarisch waren alle großteils zufrieden. Eine solide Küche und es gab auch ein paar Wiener-Klassiker wie Hirn und Nirndln. Wild und Gansl hättens auch schon gehabt.

Das Gasthaus war gut besucht, was uns verwunderte. Waren doch 7-8 Tische besetzt. Neben dem Gasthaus gibt es auch Zimmer zu mieten, was augenscheinlich gerne von Gastarbeitern genutzt wird.

Einzige Kritik ist das Ambiente, welches stark in die Jahre gekommen ist. Das Gasthaus war sauber; der Linoleum-Boden und die WCs aus den 70iger Jahren warenallerdings keine Freude für das Auge. Die Größe des Gasthauses (ca. Platz für 300 Leute) war für die Kinder allerdings sehr praktisch, konnten Emilia und Leni doch super verstecken spielen.

Valerie Fischer feierte ihre Stammtisch-Premiere. Herzlich Willkomen! Fazit: eigentlich ein sehr gelungener Stammtisch, vorallem durch das gute Service und den Schmäh des Kellners. Im Vorhinein gab es keine Erwartungen an das Gasthaus und wir wurden eigentlich positiv überrascht. Das Wilderer-Stüberl, wo wir sitzen durften war noch das schönste Platzerl im Gasthaus. Ansonsten lies das Ambiente wie erwähnt jedoch zu wünschen übrig.

Essen - sehr solide für die große Karte: 7,5/10 Getränke - waren flott und kalt: 7l8/10 Lokal: typisches Beisl, aber 100 Gästebetten! 7/10 Kellner: bester Mann! 15/10
