"When those ultra talented and fierce competitors sit only between themselves and chat and talk, listen to each other, at times make jokes and laugh together. Those are moments I cherish witnessing, back in the day when I was racing myself and now as chairman.
But we made an agreement between us that we keep the meetings off the TV because we like to preserve the unique and great culture we have had for many years now. It was not always like that, I remember that GPDA meetings became the platform for fighting and arguments long ago, which I make a big effort to not ever let happen in our meetings.
The meetings are about topics and concerns we all have and share and shall never be a courtroom of individual dislikes and disagreements."

What a delightful visual of Lewis showing up with George in Italy 🥺😂😂
The unioning bit confused me a bit though, could you elaborate?
I knew I forgot to answer something!
So George is currently the only remaining ACTIVE grid memeber director of the Grand Prix Drivers Association, the trade Union of F1 drivers after Seb generally stepped away from his responsibilities slowly after retiring, though the wiki isn’t clear of his current status. Past directors have included Schumi, Button, Massa, Nando, Barichello, Webber, etc
Generally the GPDA has two or three on grid directors and a chairman, the current chair being Alexander Wurz (the notorious admin of the grid groupchat, who is known for very swiftly kicking non active drivers the second their contracts ended). They also have a legal council as another non grid active director, Anastasia Fowle.
The GPDA has a very long history of functioning on behalf of the safety of drivers, all the way back to 1961, though they did disband between 1982 and 1994, being re-formed by Nikki Lauda, Michael Schumacher and others following the death of Roland Ratzenberger, though obviously not fast enough to save Senna, who was supposed to go on to be director.
The GPDA are the ones who arrange driver boycotts, issue statements of concern on behalf of the drivers, and George and Alex W are the ones who tend to liaise with MBS on the behalf of the entire grid when it comes to new rules and gathering driver opinions. This is why I’ve said before that George HAS to be friendly with everyone on the grid- he is their union rep, if they hate him, that risks them not coming forward or acting in sync with the group should union action be necessary. It’s also an elected position, not appointed.
George has spoken a lot of his work for the GPDA, he’s immensely proud of it and wants his legacy to be making driving safer for everyone. It’s also why he and Seb are a lot closer than people tend to remember.
So yes, George IS a Union king, whether people like it or not 😅
Unacceptable: F1 drivers furious after passing crane on track at Suzuka | 2022 Japanese Grand Prix
Pierre Gasly and Sergio Perez reacted with fury after encountering two recovery vehicles on track during the Japanese Grand Prix.
The race was red-flagged due to heavy rain shortly after the start was given as two drivers crashed out.
Recovery vehicles were sent to recover the cars of Carlos Sainz Jnr and Alexander Albon which crashed between the hairpin and Spoon Curve. Perez passed the machinery while the Safety Car was out and complained to his team on the radio.
“Is it not clear that we don’t want to see ever a crane on the track?” he said to race engineer Hugh Bird.
Gasly was further back in the queue of cars and the race was being red-flagged at the time he saw the machines.
“God – what the? – what is this tractor?” he exclaimed in shock. “What is this tractor on track?
“I passed next to it, like… This is unacceptable! What has happened? I can’t believe this…”
Sebastian Vettel was also unimpressed with what he saw.
“Next time, they should inform us if there’s a fricking tractor on the road,” said the Aston Martin driver. “I know we’re under Safety Car, but in turn 12, there’s this…”

“A tractor?” asked his race engineer Chris Cronin. “Yeah, exactly,” the driver answered.
Nicholas Latifi complained he saw “the fucking crane on track there” as drivers passed by. “It’s not great in these conditions. Very silly, actually.”
This weekend’s Japanese Grand Prix marks eight years since the race in which Jules Bianchi crashed and struck a crane, sustaining head injuries he later died from.
Alexander Wurz, the chairman of the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association, reacted to the incident with dismay on social media. “I think we need to discuss a tractor on track,” he said. “We can keep it short: this must not happen guys.”

If you look at the post race social media posts the drivers and teams did, barely anyone mentioned the crane.
It reminds me an awful lot of Saudi with the bombs when the drivers were instructed to stay put. It can’t be a coincidence that only Pierre, who’s kind of the center of it all, and George posted something. Except for Lando and Checo who did it before the FIA could’ve potentially given any instructions.
So it’s probably, for now, an internal matter. We know how the drivers feel about it - literally every single one of them. It’s more important that this never happens again rather than who spoke out publicly.
"So it’s probably, for now, an internal matter. We know how the drivers feel about it - literally every single one of them. It’s more important that this never happens again rather than who spoke out publicly." <- the last part, yes
I also would not put it part the GPDA - despite George and Seb and Alexander Wurz being outspoken about it already - to instruct the drivers to not say sth and then put sth out together
Austrian commentator Alexander Wurz: it's going to be Ferrari's 1000th GP in Mugello... but I think at this point they will bring shovels and dig their own graves there.
"Wer zahlt schafft an"😂😂😂
