OTD in Music History: Composer, conductor, and pedagogue Alexander von Zemlinsky (1871 - 1942) is born in Vienna. Zemlinsky remains a somewhat neglected figure in musical history. He was admitted to the Vienna Conservatory in 1884, where he studied with Anton Bruckner (1824 - 1896). In 1893, Johannes Brahms (1833 - 1897) attended a performance of his newly-composed Symphony, and soon thereafter also attended a performance of one of Zemlinky's quartets. Impressed, Brahms recommended the young composer to his own publisher. It was also around this time that Zemlinsky met Arnold Schoenberg (1874 - 1951); the two became very close friends and then brothers-in-law when Schoenberg married Zemlinsky's sister. Zemlinsky also gave Schoenberg lessons in counterpoint – earning a place in history books as the only music teacher that Schoenberg ever had. Zemlinsky's reputation as a composer was further cemented when Gustav Mahler (1860 - 1911) conducted the premiere of his opera "Es war einmal" ("Once Upon a Time") in 1900. That same year, Zemlinsky met and fell in love with Alma Schindler (one of his composition students), although she soon broke off the relationship to marry . . . Mahler. From 1906 until 1933, Zemlinsky held a series of important conducting positions, and in 1924 he led the premiere of Schoenberg's monodrama "Erwartung.” His pupils during this time also included Erich Wolfgang Korngold (1897 - 1957). Zemlinsky wisely fled Germany in 1938 and relocated to New York, where he quietly lived out the rest of his life. His best-known original work is his "Lyric Symphony" (1923), which exerted a profound effect on Alban Berg's (1885 - 1935) "Lyric Suite" (1926). PICTURED: A program for a 1923 concert that Zemlinsky (on piano) gave with noted French violinist Henry Marteau (1874 - 1934). Both men signed under their respective photos.

Going to the Berlin Philharmonie tonight to hear this (among others) performed by the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra. I'm not familiar with Zemlinsky or the Polish NRSO, but am very much looking forward to the Philharmonie.
