Alexei Yagudin, Russia, "One banana" 1997 Worlds EX
Exhibition that he performed at his first World Championships, where he got the third place (he was 17 back then). A bishonen appears with body painting on his naked torso, wearing a straw skirt outfit... Definitely an exhibition designed to make the audience laugh from the moment he appears on the ice. But taking into account his achievements after that, I think that maybe perhaps... the strength of mind that let him perform this kind of exhibition at such a big event as Worlds is what gave him those victories.
Evgeni Plushenko, Russia, "Sex Bomb" 2001 Worlds EX
Exhibition performed by Plushenko, who had won every competition in that season. Legendary program, that I don't have to even introduce. He revived this program for Fantasy on ICE after his retirement in 2017, so I'm sure a lot of people remember it well... It's a program that made an impact because of how "naked" it is, but actually, as he wears a muscled body suit, he shows even less skin that he usually showed.
due to the slow death of twitter i'm collecting my program links here. (almost) none of the rubicon skates are meant to be identical to real life programs, but some of the inspiration is pretty one-to-one… and some is a little less direct.
if you find yourself region blocked, try a free vpn - i recommend the veepn browser extension (firefox | chrome) or proton.
if you only have so much time, i've starred the most important ones. if you want more… i have so many more.
Anon here who is trying to cope with MAPPA being assholes by planning out a teenage years YoI fic (dunno if I'll ever write it, but hey, it's the first thing to break my years-long writer's block, at least). Anyway, I was wondering: if Yagudin and Plushenko didn't exist, how do you think the Russian men's figure skating would have looked in 05/06? Basically, Plushenko can't be around for obvious reasons, and since Yagudin is a bastard I might exclude him as well, so what would that look like?
YEAH. In a world without homophobia Yagudin simply would never have existed.
Victor would probably have looked up to skaters like Ilia Kulik and Alexei Urmanov growing up. He may have looked up to Viktor Petrenko too. He would have been stepping onto the scene right after Alexander Abt was the top Russian skater. Alexander was mega-talented, but super inconsistent and could never break through to the very top.
Victor's domestic competition at the time would have been Ilia Klimkin, who I don't think he'd have had much trouble surpassing. Russian men would definitely have been in kind of a dearth from 1999-2006 without Yags and Plush there, so it stands to reason that in YOIverse, Rusfed would probably have seen someone as promising as Victor as like, the second coming lol.
During the Soviet Era, Russia's medals mostly came from pairs and ice dance, without the kind of dominant men we saw from them in the 90s and 2000s, so if he were looking back before his time, there's a decent chance he'd be admiring American, Canadian, and British skaters. I feel like Stephane would have been the it boy at the time Victor started competing, and I have to think teen Victor may have had a bit of a crush.
If Yags and Plush weren't there, the quad race may have been sped up by Timothy Goebel winning Olympic gold in 2002 with his quad salchow, quad toe, and three quad fs. No one else had close to that level of difficulty, but since even with that tech, Tim was still placing below Plush and Yags, it stands to reason that perhaps the rest of the field wasn't rushing to catch up. This would track with YOI, where the quad race does seem to be a bit ahead of where it was in real life in fall of 2016.
In my mind there was a very dominant man (or multiple men) in YOIverse from the mid-2000s to 2012ish, and he was from Asia, Australia, Africa, or the Americas (fun thought: maybe this was when Japan really broke out in men's singles in YOIverse). The reason I say this is because despite Victor being a senior in 2006, he did not win his first world title or GPF title until he began his streak in 2012. However, we know he was winning European titles, so there must have been at least one (or more) huge skaters that he just couldn't break through at worldwide ISU championship level. Being said, he was obviously already a huge star by then, so apparently the lack of those did not halt his popularity!
Evgeni Plushenko spoke about the conflict with Alexei Yagudin: "Alyosha is still trying to measure medals with me instead of working."

The conflict between Evgeni Plushenko and Alexei Yagudin continues. Plushenko responded to Alexei Yagudin in a new post on Instagram*, stating that he had more medals before, and posted on social networks a screenshot of the statistics of his…
two-time world champion evgenia medvedeva and olympic champion alexei yagudin raving about shoma's short program! very much love the emphasis on his soft, soft knees 😍
hi! i saw ur post on adam rippon and since im new in the fs fandom, i was wondering if you’d be open to explaining briefly what some people did? I’ve seen complaints with plushenko, weir, yagudin, eteri and daniil.
hi! sorry for taking so long to answer this. i know you said “briefly” but i tried to be as comprehensive as possible RIP. also please note that i’ve been kind of away from figure skating this past season so i may be missing a few details, but i’ll try to explain the best i can.
back in 2018 news came out on how he and his wife abuse their then five year old child, alexander plushenko, for him to be the “best skater.” it was reported that they beat him with a belt and lock him in dark, tiny spaces to “teach him a lesson.”
he’s also been bad mouthing his former students to the media, most notably anastasia tarakanova after she left him 2019. truly fucking insane to me how teenage girls handle these more gracefully than adults (case in point: yulia/evgenia/alyona with eteri, anastasiia gubanova with buyanova, etc). also, someone correct me if i’m wrong but i’m pretty sure he made alexandra trusova compete with serious trauma back in rusnats as well as made alyona kostornaya compete earlier this season despite her having complications with COVID-19. he’s just fucking incompetent all throughout.
2. johnny weir
oh boy johnny. not only is he in hot water for his borderline xenophobic commentary (especially with yuzuru and anyone beating an american skater for that matter, link is just one of many, but generally his commentary is fucking terrible) but last year had the fucking gall to tweet this when the BLM protests started:
tweet has since been deleted. but you can see here how he tweets that and then the next fucking day he goes all “happy pride!” as if Black transpeople weren’t the forefront of the lgbt movement in america. amazing.
3. alexei yagudin
where to fucking start tbh. sigh. when the gpf 19-20 lineup was finalised, yagudin posted on instagram congratulating the russian skaters who made it to the final. cool, right? yeah maybe except the part where he says “ps also huge thank you to sergey voronov that my “favourite” jason brown didn’t qualify for the final, otherwise that would’ve been a SHAME ❗️❗️❗️” (trans. credit @/chopinstsq on twt) seriously, what the fuck?
then pride month 2020 comes around and adam rippon donates to Black transpeople. yagudin once again goes on instagram to post the most homophobic and transphobic (and one could even argue, anti-Black) shit, saying “When will you all die??? Mistake of the Earth [...] You and coronavirus are the same thing”
i know you came from my adam post so of course i am not erasing the anti-asian microagressions adam has done, but in no way does that excuse someone hating on him for being lgbt. adam of course calls him out and then yagudin posts an apology on instagram, but it means shit. you can read the translations of it on twitter by @/harubauer.
but it doesn’t end there !!!!! nope, yagudin has been shit since day one. here’s a 1999 article on how he used the n-word against a Black manager of a restaurant and a Black journalist. from young bigot to middle-aged one. disgusting.
4. daniil gleikhengauz
genuinely wish all i could say about this man is that his choreography is terrible, but alas, it’s not. it’s pretty well-known that eteri girls aren’t allowed to choose their own programs, and this season he gave kamila valieva, a whole fourteen year old, boléro. fucking boléro. who in their right mind gives a 14yo boléro.
not only that, but he’s said that health can and should be dismissed in professional sport. no fucking care for the wellbeing of the athletes he and eteri coach, which is greatly concerning seeing how majority of their athletes are girls who are minors, but are we really surprised? with how they’ve treated adyan pitkeev, yulia lipnitskaya, evgenia medvedeva, and alyona kostornaya? when they constantly push for little girls to jump quads and triple axels with no care for the effect it has on their bodies?
5. eteri tutberidze
there is no fucking person i hate more in this sport than this hag. FUCK this bitch for real. sorry for the lack of pics/links but damn does she make my skin crawl. she made adyan pitkeev compete with an injury, costing him his career. she’s talked shit about every skater that’s left her, most notably medvedeva when she left her after pyeongchang (i vividly remember the discourse and hell this released on twitter at the time) and alyona when she left earlier this season. she constantly starves, abuses, and pushes her skaters. no care for them at all.
special section because i’m a bitter yulia stan and i will never forgive this hag for what she’s done. she abused yulia and caused her to develop anorexia with cost her her career. there were reports of her silently encouraging the skaters at her rink to bully yulia, and reports from parents of other skaters that she would treat yulia so harshly that it was terrible to watch. when yulia transferred to urmanov those same skaters at the rink would spread lies to the skaters at urmanov’s rink, but luckily they realised it was bullshit. urmanov described yulia as a “distrustful kitten” when she first transferred like please you just fucking know how shitty they must’ve treated her back at eteri’s rink. russian figure skating personas talked shit about her every chance they got and eteri too. it’s also notable how yulia liked a comment about how eteri always blames the kids she coaches when they leave her (this was when alyona left) instead of acting like a fucking adult 😄
Yuzuru Hanyu: He’s a skinny lil noodle with asthma, so if you managed to last long enough without getting kicked by those incredibly strong legs, you might. You’d get run over by his army of fans afterward, though.
Shoma Uno: smol and on the verge of falling asleep 24/7, so you could, but why would you want to? He looks like a puppy!
Evgenia Medvedeva: no. And she’ll roast you so hard afterwards so double the pain. Don’t try it.
Alina Zagitova: maybe???
Jun Hwan Cha: the fans, Yuzuru, or Brian would kill you before you even managed to touch him.
Jason Brown: He’d never even try to fight anyone, he’s too sweet, so you’d win, but you’d feel really guilty about it afterwards, you monster.
3A: Individually you could beat them, but if they work as a team? Haha. no.
Boyang Jin: Boyangman would kick your ass. Don’t even try.
Rika Kihira: She’d win easily.
Nathan Chen: He’s precious; he’d probably resort to defense as a main strategy, but he’ll outlast you. You could try, though.
Javier Fernandez: He’d win AND you’d feel bad about trying.
Roman Sadovsky: He’s tall, but I feel like a well-aimed kick to the legs would bring him down.
BONUS:
Alexei Yagudin: Go for it. Beat his homophobic/transphobic/racist ass.
