Anon here who is trying to cope with MAPPA being assholes by planning out a teenage years YoI fic (dunno if I'll ever write it, but hey, it's the first thing to break my years-long writer's block, at least). Anyway, I was wondering: if Yagudin and Plushenko didn't exist, how do you think the Russian men's figure skating would have looked in 05/06? Basically, Plushenko can't be around for obvious reasons, and since Yagudin is a bastard I might exclude him as well, so what would that look like?
YEAH. In a world without homophobia Yagudin simply would never have existed.
Victor would probably have looked up to skaters like Ilia Kulik and Alexei Urmanov growing up. He may have looked up to Viktor Petrenko too. He would have been stepping onto the scene right after Alexander Abt was the top Russian skater. Alexander was mega-talented, but super inconsistent and could never break through to the very top.
Victor's domestic competition at the time would have been Ilia Klimkin, who I don't think he'd have had much trouble surpassing. Russian men would definitely have been in kind of a dearth from 1999-2006 without Yags and Plush there, so it stands to reason that in YOIverse, Rusfed would probably have seen someone as promising as Victor as like, the second coming lol.
During the Soviet Era, Russia's medals mostly came from pairs and ice dance, without the kind of dominant men we saw from them in the 90s and 2000s, so if he were looking back before his time, there's a decent chance he'd be admiring American, Canadian, and British skaters. I feel like Stephane would have been the it boy at the time Victor started competing, and I have to think teen Victor may have had a bit of a crush.
If Yags and Plush weren't there, the quad race may have been sped up by Timothy Goebel winning Olympic gold in 2002 with his quad salchow, quad toe, and three quad fs. No one else had close to that level of difficulty, but since even with that tech, Tim was still placing below Plush and Yags, it stands to reason that perhaps the rest of the field wasn't rushing to catch up. This would track with YOI, where the quad race does seem to be a bit ahead of where it was in real life in fall of 2016.
In my mind there was a very dominant man (or multiple men) in YOIverse from the mid-2000s to 2012ish, and he was from Asia, Australia, Africa, or the Americas (fun thought: maybe this was when Japan really broke out in men's singles in YOIverse). The reason I say this is because despite Victor being a senior in 2006, he did not win his first world title or GPF title until he began his streak in 2012. However, we know he was winning European titles, so there must have been at least one (or more) huge skaters that he just couldn't break through at worldwide ISU championship level. Being said, he was obviously already a huge star by then, so apparently the lack of those did not halt his popularity!

I’m praying that what happened with nimona will happen with Yuri on ice. That another studio will get the rights to the movie and complete it.

**slips and slides into the room with socks on and breaks the wooden table as i fall down on the floor in a haste** so anyways i actually just scared myself because i thought of exactly how deep Malorn's and Malistaire's parallels went. like in post-updated tutorial malistaire was said to have been kind and caring towards his students right. just like malorn right. just like malorn, right? isn't that just like malorn? hey everyone doesn't that sound just like malorn? kind and cares for his students? 'kind' and 'caring' are certainly two adjectives that describe malorn arent they huh? (is slowly sinking in quicksand as i desperately reach out to you as i say this) so if we are to say that malorn and malistaire are two sides of the same coin then what is truly stopping malorn from having one traumatic event from shaping the rest of his life into a descent of madness, grief, and isolation? Guys tell me what the difference is between this reality and an Evil Malorn AU guys? guys hello? hello guys? **(the quicksand has actually transported me to the Backrooms now, no one can hear me call out in distress)**

Anon from before with the no Yagudin question: first of all, thank you for the answer. It was very helpful. Definitely will keep all that in mind. This would explain Victor getting away with stuff too (didn't Kubo or Sayo say he kept annoying the FFKKR? Which, choice). I have another question: how do you think a lack of homophobia would have effected the men's figure skating scene? Like, I've heard before Weir may have been scored less because of it.
Good question! Johnny was definitely underscored occasionally due to homophobia. I don't think he missed out on any particularly major titles due to it, but he probably would have had more to his name without it.
The amount of restructuring it would give the sport in a world truly free of homophobia is something I'm not sure I'd have time to tackle lol. The FS landscape may very well just be so different. Keep in mind how many people are kept out of this sport and how many things in this sport were dictated by homophobia. Would feds also have been willing to fund more 'obviously' gay skaters like Rudy Galindo, thus giving them opportunities to win that they never had in our world? Would ice dance and pairs have same gender teams? Maybe ice dance would also be less obnoxiously hetero lol. This is not even getting started on the impact of AIDs on the fs world. :(
And then society on the whole! It would be so, so different! From clothing to social standards, especially considering the way homophobia intertwines with misogyny and the patriarchy. Because of that impact to society on the whole when Kubo said no homophobia, I took it to mean that Victor and Yuuri lived in a world that was just far ahead of where we are now; where marriage equality, adoption, etc. is the law of the land worldwide, and being lgbtq+ is considered not something particularly noteworthy. I don't think Kubo and Sayo would have had the time or motivation to worldbuild a universe where homophobia never existed in the first place, for a twelve ep figure skating anime.
And yeah, I think Victor probably got away with annoying the FFKRKR because he's Victor Nikiforov. I would love to know what he did! Because Victor is a workaholic, so I doubt it was ever something like slacking on practice, flaking out on events, etc. My guess is he just always went his own way, never listened to their recommendations, and overall did not care what they said. But he still won, so they wouldn't do anything Which, good for him bc they suck.

Rei: What happened to your face?
Kazuki: I just have no luck with women.
Rei: Sounds about right.
There are countless of posts and impressions that describe the last scenes before and after the end credits. That “For three?/For three” sounds, well, huge and somehow romantic , for me at least. Uchiyama Kouki’s soft low-pitch voice tremendously contributed to that.
The three of them against the world. They are each other’s strengths and Achilles’ heel at the same time.
But I particularly like the sequence where Rei noticed Kazuki’s wound. That despite his stoic appearance, he sees and notices everything. Kazuki didn’t give him the reason but replied instead that he was down on his luck with women, which Rei absolutely agreed to this assessment.
How many times have they seen each other in pain without mentioning about it? And not only physical, but also on emotional level. The fact that they are men, and well, Japanese, suppression of emotion is typical. Showing a slight emotion is a faux pas. They don’t talk about these things. Rei’s throwaway remark when Kazuki mentioned his nonexistent parents was unusual for him already.
Moreover, how did they get together? How did they meet? Were they former colleagues that became friends then partners? Was the mysterious Kyu-chan (Kyutaro Kugi) acted as the middleman who brought them together? Or is he a double-dealing character? His cover, a coffeehouse owner, is effective to draw the suspicion away.
How did Kazuki end up on Rei’s loft? Was that after their numerous successful team-ups? Rei finding out about his situation. Eventually realising Kazuki’s usefulness. It would be nice to have someone not only your shadow bouncing in the four corners of your expensive loft. Kazuki as his own Jiminy Cricket.
“I didn’t know where else to go…”
“Then stay…”
All of a sudden Kazuki has been living there. And to show his gratitude, he does the household chores. And if culture will be the starting point, they are mostly ambiguous and not direct to the point. They don’t say the exact words, but in order to tell the other person they care for them, they show them through actions. And through this that’s how Kazuki shows his appreciation.
