Rochdale byelection live: George Galloway declares a ‘shifting of the tectonic plates’ after landslide win
The former Labour MP will return to parliament, representing his fourth constituency in 37 years
* Full story: George Galloway wins Rochdale byelection
Labour says George Galloway is “only interested in stoking fear and division”.
In a statement issued about the byelection result, the party apologised to the people of Rochdale for the fact that it did not have a proper candidate. (Azhar Ali, who was selected as Labour’s candidate, was disowned by the party after nominations closed because it was revealed that he had made antisemitic comments after the Hamas attack on Gaza. But it was too late to change nominations, and so he was listed as a Labour candidate on the ballot paper.) A Labour spokesperson said:
We deeply regret that the Labour party was unable to field a candidate in this byelection and apologise to the people of Rochdale. George Galloway only won because Labour did not stand.
Rochdale deserved the chance to vote for an MP that would bring communities together and deliver for working people. George Galloway is only interested in stoking fear and division. As an MP he will be a damaging force in our communities and public life.
I think Mr Tice has rather lost his balance, and Mr [Nigel] Farage too, and I remind Mr Tice that I have on my telephone a text from him inviting me to be the Reform UK candidate in a by-election not that long ago.
I’d prefer not to publish it, but if he keeps telling lies about me I will have to tell the truth about him.
Absolutely none. Ask the police, ask the police if a single one of our supporters has been arrested or spoken to by them. Suella Braverman Accused Of ‘Farage Politics’ By Former Home Office Adviser
Rishi Sunak has been urged to sack Suella Braverman by a former adviser who has accused the home secretary of fuelling racism in the UK.
Nimco Ali, a close friend of Boris Johnson and his wife Carrie, said Braverman was “normalising” the politics of Nigel Farage with her language about asylum seekers who are crossing the Channel in small boats.
Ali quit her post as the government’s adviser for…
First game was crucial I think and had Pilley won it, match could have taken a very different shape. The Australian was up 9/6, having been down 3/6 and scoring 6 points in a row, only to make three errors trying to go too short too early, forcing it just a bit. That was what saved Ali I feel, 9/9. Cameron will have 2 chances to take the crucial opener, but it’s Ali in 19 long minutes, 14/12 on his second attempt.
The second sees a good start for Ali, but quickly caught out 4/4, 6/6, 7/7, and it’s the Egyptian again at the end of the game 11/7 in 9m.
A big drop of energy for Ali in the third, with Cameron coming out with the goods and playing superb squash, accurate and with flair. 9/3 for the Tall Man and it look all folded. But Ali finds his second wind, big push from 6/10 and nearly taking it right out of the Australian racquet, 9/10. But no, it’s finally Cameron, well deserved 11/9 in 13m.
I feel that Cameron didn’t do much wrong in the last game but run out of steam a bit, 3/0, 9/5, 11/6 in 9m for Spiderman…
Ali
I felt a bit flat today, I think I was slightly off the mark because the turn around from Holland was a bit short this time round. And the last person you want to play against when you are feeling flat is Cameron, because he can really cut you off and he did that really well in the first three . Plus the conditions were pretty tough as well, the wind was pretty strong tonight.
I actually think I started off well, and then the conditions were really tough, so I think the experience played a role here and he knew how to play them better
He understands the game really well. He is renowned for his hard-hitting but what people don’t really appreciate is how clean he hits the ball. It is very clean and he hits his targets every shot. It is not easy to play against him but I am glad I could pull through.
The first two games were pretty close, and had I lost one of them, things could have been very different. But sometimes, you need a match like that in the first round to prepare you for the rest of the tournament. So now I’m confident I’ll be playing much better in the next round….
Thankfully, I think, at the end of the fourth he got a little tired and I think I took advantage of that. At all points I was on my toes because I know he is a tough competitor.
The professional game keeps getting faster and faster, and players seem to be able to retrieve almost any shot. With this in mind, it is crucial that players capitalise on any opportunities that arise, writes Lee Drew.
The free-flowing Ali Farag is certainly one of those players who is able to punish opponents for any loose shot and he does this at pace as well, putting the ball into difficult areas with what seems like relative ease.
He explained: “The speed of the game is so fast now, with every ball being retrieved. For this reason, every fraction of a second you can take away from an opponent is a bonus.
“After a good shot, I look to anticipate the next shot. This allows me to jump on it early to apply pressure.”
Technically, Farag thinks a lot about positioning. He reasoned: “It’s tough, because you don’t know if you are going to hit the next shot on the volley, the half volley, off the bounce or on the rise.
“I make sure that my initial movement is to step up the court. If I can take the ball really early, I try to use my right leg, as this allows me to step further up the court; if the ball is through the middle of the court, then I use my back leg, but put extra focus on getting my shoulders side on.”
To practise taking the ball early, Farag stressed the importance of basic technique and having a good feeder.
“For me to take the ball early, I need to get my technique right,” he said. “I have spoken a lot about using my body and my suspension to help my shots and accuracy. The feeder plays a pivotal role in my practice, as they need to dig the returns out, so that I can work on being ready to take the ball as early as possible.”
Tips to play faster like Farag:
· Take the ball early to reduce your opponent’s time
· Anticipate the next shot, particularly after a good one
· Turn your shoulders to the side in midcourt for a straight shot option
