Ali Farka Touré & Toumani Diabaté - 56
0 notes
Malian kora master Toumani Diabaté has died, age 58. His solo kora albums are amazing showcases for his technical virtuosity, melodic ear, and ability to draw three voices out of the instrument.
Although he found great success, including two Grammys, in duets with Malian guitarist nAli Farka Touré and also worked with other African artists, Diabaté collaborated and recorded frequently with an extremely wide range of international artists, redefining "fusion": Björk, Ketama, Taj Mahal, Béla Fleck, Damon Albarn, and Kayhan Kalhor.
His overarching goal was to erase the artificial statal boundaries imposed by imperialist colonial powers and unite West Africa culturally.
