Here Comes the Boom (2012)
Tumblr media
While I didn't enjoy this film, that doesn't mean you won't. No matter what I say, the people involved in this project did it: they actually made a movie. That's something to be applauded. With that established...
Just say “No” to Here Comes the Boom. This Happy Madison production isn’t as egregious as most but it tries so hard to wring emotions out of its audience there’s no dirty trick it won’t try. Every inch of it stinks of artificial sweetness and a mechanical heart beats at its core. This film desperately wants to be “Rocky” and never even comes close.
Disillusioned biology teacher Scott Voss (Kevin James) learns budget cutbacks will result in the music program being canceled. Its teacher, Marty Streb (Henry Winkler) desperately needs the job to support his pregnant wife. To raise the money needed to keep the program alive, Scott begins competing in mixed martial arts matches.
Take a look at Kevin James. Even when he’s “buff” like he is in this movie, you won’t believe for a second that he would even consider fighting to make money. Scott rides a motorcycle, which makes him cool. Normal viewers might categorize him as a loser teacher who sucks at his job but the movie tells you he’s got what it takes to not only inspire his kids but take care of the old man who’s about to go broke because of the kid that’s underway. If it isn't obvious enough, this is a thinly-veiled self-insert fantasy. At night, Scott teaches classes for people who want to get their U.S. citizenship, which movie-wise, serves double duty. It's an excuse to insert some gags at the expense of people whose first language isn’t English and explain why it’s ok for him to constantly harass Bella (Salma Hayek), the sexy teacher he pines for. By the end of the movie, you know she’s going to end up in his arms, which speaks to Hayek’s acting talent that she can keep a straight face while indulging Kevin James and director Frank Coraci.
Taking cues from the Sylvester Stallone classic, with a hint of School of Rock and none of the appeal of either film, I saw right through Here Comes the Boom. Maybe you won’t. Even if the story does bend you into the shape of a pretzel like it intends to, I bet you won’t swallow the sports portion of the movie. Scott begins his "career" with matches that barely last 10 seconds, in a venue where they’re probably also betting on which rooster will die first. Before the end of the school year, he's pitted against a professional fighter. It's pure science fiction. The script goes to great lengths to tell us how he used to wrestle in college, and there is a training montage where a former fighter (Bas Rutten as Niki) teaches him the moves… but this is a comedy. The MMA scenes are more about seeing Kevin James get kneed in the head than winning. A few scenes later, we're supposed to be dramatically invested in his big match. Impossible. Here Comes the Boom could’ve gone with something realistic; maybe Joe Rogan (playing himself) has a secret passion for playing the tuba and comes to rescue the school program after hearing what Scott is doing but nah, they had to go for the ultimate “winner” of an ending. It's an insult to your intelligence.
Here Comes the Boom has few laughs to offer. Its attempt at an inspirational story will make you roll your eyes. The moments of heart are not the least bit genuine. This leaves us with Kevin James, who might have some appeal to some… but not this reviewer. (On DVD, October 12, 2019)

Why Do I Like This? - Music Free Static (062)
Like everyone, I have genres if things that I like. I'm into action comedies & romcoms, EDM & dance pop, and sci-fi & fantasy. But every so often something shows up on my radar that absolutely love and I cannot say why.
In this podcast, I dive into a couple of those things that I love that falls outside my wheelhouse. I can't even explain why I like the album "Tails" by Lisa Loeb or Wes Anderson's "Moonrise Kingdom". I like them and that's okay.

The text of the letter and names of the celebrities that signed it under the cut.
"October 23, 2023
Dear President Biden,
We are heartened by Friday’s release of the two American hostages, Judith Ranaan and her daughter Natalie Ranaan and by today’s release of two Israelis, Nurit Cooper and Yocheved Lifshitz, whose husbands remain in captivity.
But our relief is tempered by our overwhelming concern that 220 innocent people, including 30 children, remain captive by terrorists, threatened with torture and death. They were taken by Hamas in the savage massacre of October 7, where over 1,400 Israelis were slaughtered - women raped, families burned alive, and infants beheaded.
Thank you for your unshakable moral conviction, leadership, and support for the Jewish people, who have been terrorized by Hamas since the group’s founding over 35 years ago, and for the Palestinians, who have also been terrorized, oppressed, and victimized by Hamas for the last 17 years that the group has been governing Gaza.
We all want the same thing: Freedom for Israelis and Palestinians to live side by side in peace. Freedom from the brutal violence spread by Hamas. And most urgently, in this moment, freedom for the hostages.
We urge everyone to not rest until all hostages are released. No hostage can be left behind. Whether American, Argentinian, Australian, Azerbaijani, Brazilian, British, Canadian, Chilean, Chinese, Danish, Dutch, Eritrean, Filipino, French, German, Indian, Israeli, Italian, Kazakh, Mexican, Panamanian, Paraguayan, Peruvian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, South African, Spanish, Sri Lankan, Thai, Ukrainian, Uzbekistani or otherwise, we need to bring them home.

Kate Bosworth and Jim Sturgess in 21 (Robert Luketic, 2008)
Cast: Jim Sturgess, Kevin Spacey, Kate Bosworth, Aaron Yoo, Liza Lapira, Jacob Pitts, Laurence Fishburne, Jack McGee, Josh Gad, Sam Golzari, Helen Carey, Bob Phillips. Screenplay: Peter Steinfeld, Allan Loeb, based on a book by Ben Mezrich. Cinematography: Russell Carpenter. Production design: Missy Stewart. Film editing: Elliot Graham. Music: David Sardy.
Harvard has a very fine medical school, no doubt. But so do NYU, Penn, Johns Hopkins, UCSF, Columbia, Stanford, Duke, and the University of Washington, to name a few. And 21 asks us to believe that its protagonist, Ben Campbell (Jim Sturgess), is so set on going to Harvard's, and only Harvard's, that he will betray his friends, lie to his mother, and put his life in jeopardy to raise the money he needs to attend. He's already been admitted, of course. He has straight A's at MIT and a genius IQ. Moreover, he's an ideal candidate for financial support: He has a single mother and has to work part time. But according to the screenplay, there's only one scholarship available and it has scores of other applicants. So Ben will find himself roped into a card-counting system devised by a rather shady MIT professor of statistics, Micky Rosa (Kevin Spacey), who takes a group of hand-picked students and trains them in a foolproof system of beating the odds at the blackjack tables in Las Vegas. The premise is valid: Ben Mezrich reported on an actual MIT Blackjack Team in his 2003 book Bringing Down the House. But the makers of 21 aren't interested in the actuality of Mezrich's book, maybe because it involves a lot of boring stuff like mathematics. So they cobbled it into a routine con-game drama, with some Vegas glamour, a little romance, some snaky double-crossing, a little violence, and a moderately happy ending. The actual MIT team was mostly Asian, so there are some token Asians in the cast, but the movie's story centers on the good-looking white guy and the dishy blonde. That the Vegas casinos wouldn't spot this gang of pretty people as phonies defies belief. At best, 21 is a passable time-waster.

are you working on any fics right now? i love your writing so much!
unfortunately not - I mean, I am working on fics in my head, always, but I'm still not up to writing, at least for the near future. I'm desperately wanting to, and every day I hope that I will feel up to it. I've recently changed medication so hopefully I'll feel better soon, and with that will come the confidence to write again (fingers crossed). But thank you, anon - I'm so glad that you like my writing! That does help <33
anyway here's some things I've been thinking about:
Allan Williams says in his book that in Hamburg there were aphrodisiacs/Spanish fly for sale... so, John takes something, it actually works, Paul has to help him through it
'67 fic, Cavendish, trippy, John fucking Paul on/over that green velvet sofa
The Nerk Twins play Obertauern
That kinkmeme prompt where it's '71 John fucking '64 Paul
George Martin/Paul
And of course the Leopold and Loeb AU where John and Paul are teenage murderers

Richard was informed of his father's death yesterday morning. He was told a week ago by his mother and Allan that his father was sinking rapidly and that his death might occur at any time. When he was called into the conference room of the prison early yesterday he had a premonition that bad news awaited him.
Jacob Loeb placed a hand on his nephew's shoulder and said, "Dick, your father is dead."
Richard swayed a moment and then fell over on his brother's shoulder. He was shaken with sobs.
"O, father, I'm sorry. I'm sorry," the 19 year old convict groaned.
"Dick, the doctors say that Dad's death was inevitable and that it was not brought on by what you did," Allan said. "You remember his attack in May, don't you? Well, that was before you were arrested. He didn't find out about you and Leopold until days after you confessed. The first night the doctors didn't expect Dad to live through the night."
"I know. I've heard all that. Why couldn't I have been with him? My dad. O, what a wonderful dad he was to me, and I had to bring all this on his head. All this shame. O, God, I'm sorry."
- Richard Loeb's alleged reaction to his father's death. Chicago Tribune. October 29, 1924.
