This little book features a miniature French poodle named Sukie, who helps the author showcase every element of the alphabet. Each letter has a full-page illustration which features Sukie, as well as bright hand coloring and some nice floral decorations as well!

This is part of a continuing series featuring pet minis in conjunction with the of the new pet themed exhibit that is now up in the reading room. This particular item is from the corresponding mini exhibit, put together by Rachel, so make sure to take time to see that wonderful collection as well, for more fun finds like this!

Not sure if Sukie was a fan of the Halloween season, but this poodle certainly is!

No, this is a Ornithorhynchus paradoxus.

A what?

A paradoxical bird-snout!

The platypus was given that name by Johann Blumenbach in 1803. But three years earlier George Shaw had named it Platypus anatinus, which was a bit of an issue because the name platypus also referred to a genus of beetle. Thus it eventually became Ornithorhynchus anatinus, or duck-like bird-snout. A hybrid name for hybrid animal.

Before Yuyi Morales won acclaim for her amazing work Dreamers, she also wrote other brilliant books, including the trickster tale Just A Minute, where Black-Hispanic Grandma Beetle tricks and then befriends Death, and this sequel (which also won the Pura Belpré award for excellence in Latin American lit) is just as good as the first! Written as an alphabet book and a story at once, it shows Señor Calavera (the skeleton who represented Death in JaM) trying to find the perfect present for Grandma Beetle's birthday. Though he gathers many objects, all in Spanish (with English explanations), clever choices like a Granizado (like a snow cone) , Instrucciones (to find all things lost) and ñapa (a little extra of everything), none seem quite right, according to his new acquaintance Zelmiro the Ghost - until they arrive at the party, and Zelmiro turns out to be Grandma Beetle's deceased husband, who she and her grandchildren are overjoyed to see - truly the perfect present. Morales' illustrations, painted with vibrant color, joyous whimsy, and sometimes-surreal style reminiscent magical realism are a perfect match to her playfully wise writing. I don't think I know of any households with young kids that DON'T have a well worn and beloved copy of "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom" (1989) by John Archambault and Bill Martin Jr., and illustrated by Lois Ehlert, but just in case, I feel compelled to share it. This is truly one of the best, most timeless alphabet books you'll ever encounter. From "grown-up" capital letters to lowercase "children", the antics described in an irresistibly catchy rhyming rhythm are utterly adorable, and make this a favourite read-aloud in every preschool classroom around. The end of the semester is on the horizon with it deadlines, projects, and essays—oh my! With the added stress comes the necessary reminder to take a breath and find peace. Emily Martin’s The Anxiety Alphabet (1998) is an artist’s alphabet book relating to anxiety and it’s resolution. The deluxe copy sits on pins and needles stuck in vertically (watch out!); the standard edition features needles and pins through the cover paper.
