Reina Ramos Works It Out by Emma Otheguy is my favorite of the three! Reina is so excited when her school announces they will be doing a school wax museum, and they will get to dress up as historical figures they admire! Reina and her friend Nora both adore Frida Kahlo, so they both want to be her - and conflict arises when Nora chooses Kahlo before she gets a chance. Thankfully, the two talk out their hurt feelings, in a very believable way, and come to understanding. And Reina chooses another favorite role model - Celia Cruz, Queen of Salsa! I loved this book for its celebration of Latine historical figures as the heroes that kids want to emulate (so tired of Washington, Lincoln, etc being the defaults) and for the genuine communication the friends share. #weneeddiversebooks #childrensbooks #childrensbookstagram #latinebooks #latinabooks #fridakahlo #celiacruz #earlyreaderbooks #earlyreaders #icanread #diversekidlit #friendshipbooks #friendship #sel #teacherlibrarian #teachersofInstagram #librariansofinstagram #librariansfollowlibrarians https://www.instagram.com/p/CnKIvnnOftB/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

I haven't had time to write a proper review so all I'll say is this is better than Mexican Gothic, with a likeable male protagonist. He and the female main character didn't interact till the end, which is a letdown since that was promised but I enjoyed this story. Synopsis: Mexico in the 1970s is a dangerous country, even for Maite, a secretary who spends her life seeking the romance found in cheap comic books and ignoring the activists protesting around the city. When her next-door neighbor, the beautiful art student Leonora, disappears under suspicious circumstances, Maite finds herself searching for the missing woman-and journeying deeper into Leonora's secret life of student radicals and dissidents. #velvetwasthenightnovel #velvetwasthenightsilviamorenogarcia #velvetwasthenightbook #velvetwasthenight #silviamorenogarcia #latinaauthor #latinaliterature #latinalit #latinabook #hispanicliterature #hispanicheritagemonth2022 #latinheritagemonth2022 #guyanesegrammer #guyaneseamericanebookstagrammer #mexicanliterature #mexicanlit #mexicanstory #mexicannoir #noir #historicalfiction #basedontrueevents #historicalfictionnoir #latinnoir #hispanicnoir #ereview #ebookstagrammer #ebook #bookreview https://www.instagram.com/p/CkHtbckrJOF/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Happy Hispanic/Latin Heritage Month to the Hispanic and Latin community! I'm reading 3 Hispanic/Latin books that may or may not change, depending on availability at my local library. My API reads for Asian & Pacific Island Heritage Month changed after some were unavailable so this heritage month's reads might go through the same. First up is Velvet Was the Night by Silvia Moreno-Garcia. This historical fiction thriller set during the '70's in Mexico was all the rave last year, plus its sitting on my TBR so why not finally get to it? It's also a noir so I'm not expecting a happy ending but I hope it's better than Mexican Gothic. My Year in the Middle by Lila Quintero Weaver will be my 1st Middle Grade read as an adult. This story is about an Argentinean tween living in Alabama during the height of segregation; I've never read any stories about non-Black and White POC living in states that practiced segregation, which is why I chose to add it. And finally, Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter by Erika L. Sánchez. I've heard about this book since I was a child but never read it, so I also added it too. This is a coming of age story about a Mexican teen who's looked down upon by her parents because she's not like her "perfect" sister Olga, however she discovers secrets about Olga after her death which opens up a lot of questions for the protagonist. Which books are on your TBR? #notyourperfectmexicandaughter #myyearinthemiddle #velvetwasthenight #velvetwasthenightnovel #velvetwasthenightsilviamorenogarcia #velvetwasthenightbook #hispanicliterature #hispanicheritagemonth #happyhispanicheritagemonth #hispanicheritagemonth2022 #happyhispanicheritagemonth2022 #latinheritagemonth #latinheritagemonth2022 #happylatinheritagemonth #latinbooks #latinabooks #latinauthors #hispanicbooks #hispanicheritagemonthtbr #latinheritagemonthtbr #hispanicreads #latinreads #latinacharacters #latinacharactersinbooks #ebookstagrammer #bookreviewer #audiobookstagrammer #guyanesegrammer #readersofig #readingcommunity https://www.instagram.com/p/CiiwKiZrMyR/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

In this Pura Belpré-honored story, an elementary-school girl's life is altered when her grandmother moves in with her and her parents, from her "far-away" house. Though Abuela's presence, photographs of her country and the girl's Abuelo, and love promise a happy new relationship, the girl's lack of knowledge of Spanish and Abuela's not knowing English present a problem, as both have much they want to say to each other but the language barrier prevents it. After a reminder from her mother about how the teacher and kids in her classroom had taught the girl's friend, Kim, English, the girl, Mia, decides to help and learn from her grandmother - they teach each other English words as they cook together, Mia puts post-it-notes with English words for items all around the house (leading to some humorous mistakes), and they both practice new words every day. One day, in a pet shop, Mia excitedly shows her mother a parrot, exclaiming that it would be a perfect pet for Abuela, as he looks like the parrot that lived in her mango trees at home. Over time, the parrot, named Mango, learns phrases in both languages as Abuela and Mia both talk to him, and their friends grow more fluent in Spanish as well, listening to the fascinating parrot. At last, after a while, Abuela and Mia can understand each other, and Abuela reads her her favorite book and tells her stories about her grandfather, as Mia tells her about her great day at school and shows her her painting of Mango - and at last, they all fall asleep, both contented at their newfound communication, relationship, and appreciation for both languages - both Spanish and English. #latinabooks #diversechildrensliterature #diversekidlit #languagediversity #ell #representationmatters #childrenwhoread #raisingreaders #teachersofInstagram https://www.instagram.com/p/CBnuc1fgn0N/?igshid=1io5zav4wzux4

In this Pura Belpré award-winning picture book biography, major events in the life of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo are depicted as her personality is paralleled with the traits of her beloved animalitos, the pets who were family to her throughout her life. As a young girl, she dressed colorfully, like her parrot Bonito, happy with her family in their house, La Casa Azul, and like her fawn, Frida was observant and looked carefully at details, taught by her photographer father to look at insects under a microscope and paint finishing touches on photos. Like her cat and monkeys, Frida was playful, independent, and mischievous, finding joy in imagination when she was sick (a trait that also appeared later in her life after her bus accident, manifesting itself through her paintings), and playing athletically and mischievously like the boys around her, skating, rowing, biking, boxing, wrestling, and even setting of firecrackers in her high school. As an adult, Frida drew inspiration from all her animals, including her eagle, turkeys, and dogs, who were sensitive and sweet, comforting her when she felt low and inspiring her to new heights. Her animals, also representatives of her culture, appear throughout her paintings, often with her in her self-portraits, as present in her art as they were in her life.   Blurb from Latina School Library Journal reviewer: This unique and gorgeous take on the famous figure’s work will give children an accessible entry point to an important artist. A good choice for picture book biography shelves. – Shelley M. Before Yuyi Morales won acclaim for her amazing work Dreamers, she also wrote other brilliant books, including the trickster tale Just A Minute, where Black-Hispanic Grandma Beetle tricks and then befriends Death, and this sequel (which also won the Pura Belpré award for excellence in Latin American lit) is just as good as the first! Written as an alphabet book and a story at once, it shows Señor Calavera (the skeleton who represented Death in JaM) trying to find the perfect present for Grandma Beetle's birthday. Though he gathers many objects, all in Spanish (with English explanations), clever choices like a Granizado (like a snow cone) , Instrucciones (to find all things lost) and ñapa (a little extra of everything), none seem quite right, according to his new acquaintance Zelmiro the Ghost - until they arrive at the party, and Zelmiro turns out to be Grandma Beetle's deceased husband, who she and her grandchildren are overjoyed to see - truly the perfect present. Morales' illustrations, painted with vibrant color, joyous whimsy, and sometimes-surreal style reminiscent magical realism are a perfect match to her playfully wise writing.
