Beyond "Beyond The Box": Readers' comments on Theme Decks.
Jay of Ertai’s Lament fame also wrote articles for a couple different sites in addition to the blog. I’ve started mining these for my “Compendium” posts, and to make things easier I’ve fired everything into a google docs file and grouped them by set. I then had the thought that it was probably worth just making a couple of dedicated posts about them. They’ll all trickle out eventually as I go…

When Energy debuted, I didn’t see any cards that interested me and I didn’t get the appeal of the mechanic. Now in Modern Horizons 3, I’m coming around to it. I think MH3 just had more of the designs I’m familiar with and enjoy, so thanks for changing my mind. (It was the white green energy cards oddly enough #aluren)
I’m glad energy finally won you over.

SHRIEKING DRAKE IN MODERN?! this card is unassuming, but has lots of potential as a combo piece anywhere whitemane lion used to see play. this is especially relevant with the new Aluren enchantment, as it becomes the new most efficient creature with this effect. however, it doesn't instantly win you the game with New Aluren + Rogue Refiner the way a reprint like Cavern Harpy would. at least, not without a little extra work.

Last FNM of the year
I haven't posted here in a while and a lot has happened since. The greatest change is that I'm not playing in Brussels or Leuven anymore but in Ghent now that I live there. There is more Modern and less Legacy. I don't like it as much but it's alright.
Tumblr media
My last modern FNM was with Asmo-blast, an aggressive 8-blast deck with the asmo package. This time it went pretty bad. The deck really did not kick off and I found it not that great.
Tumblr media
I also sleeved a fun deck for legacy FNM but it was quite a mistake. I really wanted to have a feel for the 40K miracles deck that popped up on MTGTOP8. All the other players where on a degenerate combo deck of some sort and my deck was really just cute. I won 1 game against lands when I got an "early" monarch drawing me many more cards than my opponent. But otherwise the deck was just too slow for modern day legacy when any fire card is just super powerful!
Tumblr media
I went to the M3 mol with my trusty Cephalid Breakfast deck to a really disapointing 1-3-drop. I was a little bit greedy on my mana. I won the first game with a bang but lost all the others mostly to mana issues. Either by not playing around wasteland enough or by just being manascrewed, bummer!
Tumblr media
I went to the last FNM of the year. It was actually modern but a few legacy players were there so we played amongst us. I had a fun turbo smog brew that beat doomsday but I was unable to win agains 5 matches of sultai. The deck is really explosive but **Bowmasters** are a beating. I'm also always jamming and it's maybe not a good idea against wastelands and dazes as I really 2 or 3-4-1 myself in those situations. I'm more fan of the Nic fit variants but I could see myself trying this deck again!
Tumblr media
I also played a premodern game with my Oath-still deck. I won the 2nd of 3 matches against Aluren. The games were really close but I did quite a few misplays, especially in game 1! Cabal Therapy was a banger against me.
So all in all it was a really fun evening and I was happy to close the year with some fun games and the chain of smog combo!

What is your favorite M T G combo?
Mine was Aluren, Horned Kavu, Essence Warden, and Pandemonium.
i love kiki jiki type combos so felidar guardian + sahreli rai or the conspicuous snoop goblin deck lines are my fav

Phyrexia all will be one is out and there are some big changes to all the formats. Mercurial Spelldancer looks like an auto include in delver strategies and allows to take back the innitiative. I will not be surprised if this card also finds a place in modern. Casting expressive iteration (or any cantrip really) seems gravy. Atraxa is making a lot of buzz and cheating her into play is bonkers! I have already a few builds for my playset 😊 Finally, mycosynth gardens alows for all kinds of artifact copying shennanigans and you should really see some changes in Titan decks in modern or people trying to copy LED in legacy.
modern
As said above, mycosynth gardens is a real game changer for Titan and apparently you now play Asuza agin as @EdgarMTG points out!
Atraxa pitches to solitude and grief so why not put her in a goryo's vengeance deck! Thanks @bobinchese for this.
legacy
Joris Koek took his blue delver list to a 5-0 finish, a top8 in bazaar of boxes and said there is a place for spelldancer when the card would be available. I love some whale action and this is really sweet!
Aluren is always a deck I keep an eye one. Aluren is one of the only cards I still own from when I was a kid and I always wanted to play the deck. I miss 2 copies for now but this might change in the nearby future! Meanwhile here is a list from Yamada Taichiro who went 4th place in Osaka. I see pernicious deed, I click like!
Playing cEDH in legacy is a thing you can do with tainted pact. I was looking form some lists and here is a sweet tainted oracle list from Nico Chan
Arclight phoenix was my first legacy deck and the deck I wanted to play in modern before faithless looting was banned. Apparently you can still put up results with the list and it's really not that expensive: mono red arclight phoenix prowess deck
I don't own SFM and I'm always looking for some alternatives in my cephalid breakfast decks. @GrapeshotNH found a nice alternative by adding baleful strixes and just roll with it. I tried the list and failed miserably. I think I still want to play Aether vial in my breakfast decks but definitely kudos for the results!
Pauper
I wanted to point out some spice with a poison deck that @jakeAls posted and only casts spells and no creatures, that pretty spicy! I'm not sure what the weather the storm interaction was but I love it!

Deck Talk: Aluren
Hey all, since I wasn’t able to get to any questions over on @magicjudge today, I figured that I would write about the legacy deck I’ve been putting together for tomorrow.
What is this Deck?
Tumblr media
Aluren is a Sultai/BUG creature combo deck that takes its name from its key card, Aluren. (Aluren is an old English word meaning “paradise”.)
So yeah, that’s one hell of a card. They sure don’t make cards like this anymore. But this is legacy, so how do we break the parity that this card provides?
The Combo
Tumblr media
Cavern Harpy and Parasitic Strix, in combination with Aluren, provide us with our game-winning combo. The loop goes thusly: With Aluren on the battlefield, you cast Parasitic Strix for free. If you control a black permanent, you’ll drain your opponent for 2 life. This isn’t strictly necessary on the first loop, though. Next, you cast Cavern Harpy for free. When its ETB trigger resolves, you return Parasitic Strix to your hand. You then re-cast Parasitic Strix and drain 2 life, since you now control Cavern Harpy. You then pay 1 life to return Cavern Harpy to your hand, then re-cast it for free and bounce Parasitic Strix. Repeat this loop until your opponent is dead. (The great thing about Aluren is that it lets you cast your 3 CMC creatures for free and as though they had flash, so you can wait to combo out until your opponent starts pointing removal at one of your combo pieces.)
What Else Does it Do?
Tumblr media
Don’t worry, Cavern Harpy is a ridiculous value engine that can generate real card advantage even without Aluren on the battlefield. Just combo Cavern Harpy with Baleful Strix to draw cards, or with Shardless Agent for more free spells, or with Trophy Mage to search up more Shardless Agents and Parasitic Strixes.
Other Cards
These synergies buy you time to find your combo pieces and just grind value, with the deck including cards like Ancestral Vision for Shardless Agent to cascade into. The deck also features the usual suspects of any Sultai/BUG legacy deck, namely Leovold, Deathrite Shaman, Brainstorm, Force of Will, and Abrupt Decay. The mana base is composed entirely of dual lands, fetch lands, and basic lands.
Decklist
I’m just listing my main deck here since the sideboard options are broad and mostly the usual suspects available to these colours in Legacy.
4 Baleful Strix 2 Parasitic Strix 4 Shardless Agent 4 Cavern Harpy 4 Deathrite Shaman 2 Leovold, Emissary of Trest 2 Trophy Mage
4 Aluren 4 Abrupt Decay 4 Brainstorm 4 Force of Will 2 Ancestral Vision
1 Forest 2 Island 2 Swamp 1 Bayou 4 Misty Rainforest 4 Polluted Delta 2 Tropical Island 2 Underground Sea 2 Verdant Catacombs

Can we please have more plane agnostic cards with unique game-changer effects and simple yet iconic, unique names like Aluren? In case you couldn't tell, I'm a fan of Aluren lol. Everything about the card is [chef's kiss]. It really plays into the mystical fantasy of discovering powerful or ancient magics. Necropotence is another good example. I don't feel the same when spells are specific to characters or events.
We still make those. Probably in higher numbers than the time frame you’re referencing, although admittedly probably smaller in percentage.

Commander Report Yidris is pretty busted. Especially when you give him something like Shadow or Horsemanship. With enough mana rocks and Paradox Engine, you could go nuts. Speaking of nuts, I had a game last night where I kept bouncing Cavern Harpy and Mulldrifter until I found my Aluren and Impact Tremors. Then I got to bounce Cavern Harpy with Faerie Impostor to go infinite. Problem is, there's no way to "go infinite" on MTGO. So you gotta play every damn step, even if there's no way the opponents can win. I ended up conceding before they did it was taking so long.

Strange/funny Magic: The Gathering Cards - Green (spells)
Not as many here, because most green spells are more “pretty” than “strange” and/or “funny”.

im putting together a commander deck (4c rector aluren) for the first time in ages and genuine question, what is the line supposed to be between actual cedh and just strong commander? i know that thats something thats easier to define when youve got a consistent group to play with but for the sake of building a deck in a vacuum what cards really delineate between “a strong edh deck with combo as a central focus” and “a cedh deck”?
