This is a whiteboard (Figjam) prototype art concept for my DigiOracle. Originally this was meant to be a mobile app with a cute and whimsical feel that would enable users to create their own digital oracle decks. I decided to make it web-first instead.
Of course, I love any opportunity to use React but especially because this enables me to get proficient in web animation. The idea of animated symbolic UI came about from my boredom when thinking about how to leverage the amount of space available on desktop. It is as cute as the Android design that leveraged the size of the average smartphone (relative to tarot or typical oracle cards) as the basis for the UX. Making the desktop design concept unique to the web actually helped justify going beyond my first concept of an Android app alone.
It seems straightforward but the shelf represents the library of different decks the user created, the hand is for animation's sake moving the cards between the deck and the layout and plucking cards from the layout to view, and the deck itself is it's own symbol for shuffling and card pulls themselves. The crystal ball is an animation element which, alongside a magical whimsical fog of occlusion not pictured here, will be used during animation frames to add an extra loving touch. The other graphic aspects of the tabletop and the plant are just for fun....(don't bother to ask how long it took to simulate a succulent using the prototyping shapes in FigJam...programming comes before graphics for me and this was just a way to get the visuals out of my head and onto a screen).
I actually became so excited about the liberty that desktop resolution enables that I lost myself before creating the Android frames for a drastically different design using the phone to simulate holding the deck in-hand. But I can't wait to get started and use one format or the other to distract myself when I run into the sort of debugging slumps that only a night of sleep (frustrated by the problem) or forgetting the problem completely by working on another project while your unconscious mind works out the solution will actually help. Devs know what I mean.
Forgive my use of Tumblr and not, for example, Medium. It's just that I view dev as another creative artform although people might not think of code as poetry or appreciate the verses that make up the experiences they have each and every day through the portals in their pockets or on the desk...
