Song Review: Ari Joshua, John Morgan Kimock, Andy Hess and Eden Ladin - “Help on the Way”
With assistance from drummer John Morgan Kimock, bassist Andy Hess and keyboardist Eden Ladin, singer and guitarist Ari Joshua takes “Help on the Way” to the cosmos.
The foursome’s trance-space rendition of the Grateful Dead number is overkill as the musicians seem more concerned with that fusion than with the song itself. But the crux of Jerry Garcia’s melody and the thrust of Robert Hunter’s lyrics remain amid the sonic universe, so it isn’t a total loss.
And besides, Joshua is donating a percentage of the proceeds from the release to suicide-prevention efforts, so it’s actually a win.

The artistic milieu that Gonzales-Torres entered - New York in the late 80's - was a drastically impoverished one for a thoughtful artist. The waves of innovation that had swept the New York art world since 1945 had subsided, leaving behind a monolithic commercial edifice purpose-built for marketing reactionary to a newly created of class of speculators who demanded, and of course received, a traditional and easily comprehensible art. Oppositional practice mirrored (and perversely supported) the sterility of the market. Feminist artistic discourse devolved from the complexities of Eva Hesse into the simplistic sloganeering of Barbara Kruger. Gay art, in previous decades defined by artists such as Johns, Rauschenberg, and Warhol, was now characterized by a dominant practice of homoerotic pinups.  Gonzalez-Torres refused this (and every other) gay stereotype as repressive and, moreover, as playing directly into the hands of the homophobic ultra-right. Instead he adopted a strategy of détournement, subverting received forms of high culture-Minimalism, Conceptualism, et. al. to his own purposes. Approprating the idiom of the master narrative, Gonzalez-Torres  an art with multiple and often conflicting readings. He mainstreamed the 'gay agenda' or his gay agenda, by addressing both gay and straight audiences with works that were not only personally and politically charged, but were a meditation on the conditions and possibilities of art. The themes of time (as instrument and arbiter of mortality) and of generosity (as an engine to defeat, or forestall mortality) are pervasive in Gonzalez-Torres work. His allusions to mortality are sometimes blandly literal, as in "Untitled" (Perfect Lovers), 1987-1990, two synchronous battery-powered wall clocks placed side by side, marking the passage of time until one or the other falls out of sync, slows, and stops. His portraits invert the received notion of portraiture, 'immortalizing the sitter.' Timelines, installed as friezes, melding significant moments in his subject's lives with dates of contemporary historical events, imbedding them in the passage of time and the corruption of the flesh, an homage of sorts to the best-known unexecuted portrait of the last century, Dorian Gray.

@lady-merian tagged me to put my "on repeat" playlist on shuffle and share the first ten. Thanks, Meri!
"Back Home" - Andy Grammer This song has taken on more associations and shades of meaning in my mind than it has any right to - and it just makes me grin.
"Valentina" - The Hunts I didn't realize this song was in my frequent listening. I like it well enough, but not majorly. I think Spotify brings it up a lot because it does intersect a lot of my musical tastes, and I enjoy it enough that I don't skip it when it comes on.
"Ride On" - The Darkeyed Musician Such a wistful sung so beautifully sung. And the artist herself is lovely - plays so many cool instruments and picks wonderful folk songs to perform, as well as write her own. I sometimes like to work on things with her live stream on Youtube in the background. She usually only has half a dozen listeners at a time, so she's very personable with everyone.
"We'll Meet Again" - Laura Brehm This was my song of determination and comfort during a difficult time a couple of years ago. I chose it as the curtain call music for The Tempest because it matched the emotional note we ended on, and some of the lyrics seemed appropriate. I suppose it's on repeat because we used it so many times during run-throughs and performances. :-)
"Cakewalk" - Nigel Hess and the Royal Shakespeare Company This instrumental version of "Come Live With Me and Be My Love" features in a production of "Much Ado About Nothing" which is very dear to my heart. I love the jaunty early thirties sound and would love to foxtrot to it at a dance. I don't know if I've mentioned my love of ballroom dancing to my tumblr friends much? I'm afraid I'm rather out of practice since covid, but it's a love of mine.
"Chasing the Sun" - Sara Bareilles @thebirdandhersong, you did this to me! Only went and made this my theme song of the year!
"Bird Song" - Juniper Vale This one is on the playlist I made for a certain book series. I picked it initially because it worked for a couple of the characters but have since started enjoying the song more for its own sake.
"Neck of the Woods" - Maisie Peters I am really only the most casual of Maisie listeners, but @imissthembutitwasntadisaster posted about this one a couple of times a while back, and I grew very fond of it after a couple of listens.
"King of the World" - Young Rising Sons It's just so joyous and optimistic! I think I started out loving this because of @telthor's King's Quest Chapter One playlist, and there's still a little essence of Daventry in it for me, but also it's just a fun song in its own right!
"No Excuse" - Psallos I put on their Romans album when I'm having trouble getting in the head space to do my study of Romans - usually gets me to sit down and start reading.
I nominate everyone who drank out of a water bottle in the last twenty-four hours. Do it!

Hurtless: a Britchell fic in three parts

“The stones are from Asgard,” Olaf said, gesturing to the engraved stones in a circle on the ground with the sword.
“Where ‘gard?” Axl asked.
“Norse god home.”
Axl took a deep breath that sounded like he was trying to prevent himself from rolling his eyes and started to step into the ring.
“Oh, take off your clothes,” Anders interrupted.
“What?” Axl asked, incredulous with a disbelieving laugh.
“Look, you don’t have to,” Olaf said assuringingly to Axl who was now backing away from the circle.
Anders repeated himself, “Trust me, take off your clothes.”
“Gayest god ever,” Ty quipped.
“I loved that jacket, it was totally ruined,” Anders replied bitterly.

          Meeting
“Hey, Andy!” Mat chirped as Anders pushed open the employee’s entrance of Bean of the Gods.
“It’s Anders.” Anders had little hope that Mat would listen. It had been 6 days a week for 3 weeks. Anders corrected him each time. And each time it made no difference.
He hung his denim jacket on a hook. He looked at the patches sewn onto the fabric and a faint smile. He checked the stitching on the most recent one, a blue and white CTA (Chicago Transit Authority) circle patch. He’d only had red thread and it stood out against the solid white border on the patch. But it was secure.
“It’s nearly 7.”
“I know, I know,” Anders grumbled and reached for the golden apron hanging in his locket. At least his name tag had the right name.

“Why doesn’t anyone just get a black coffee with sugar or cream? Or a tea?” Anders was wiping down the counter after the pre-work rush of men and women in suits with thin ties and shoes that pinched.
“Would you pay $3 for a black coffee when you could just make it at home?”
“I do!” Anders gestured toward his cardboard cup of coffee by the register.
“And on our wages at that…”
Anders shrugged and took a sip of his quickly cooling coffee.
With everything clean and put away and the mid-morning pick-me-up rush still a little over 30 minutes away Anders pulled a book from his locket and leaned over the counter reading the yellowed pages of Herman Hesse’s Siddartha.
“I forgot this.”
“Your balls?” Anders asked without looking up.
“Rude,” Mat said. “This.” He dropped an envelope next to Anders’ elbow. “Someone bought one of those,” he gestured to the poems and scattered drawings that were clipped to a length of clothesline running along the wall.
“Really?” The book flopped shut. Anders opened the envelope to find a crisp $50 bill, far more than the hopefully optimistic $10 price tag he had put on it. “Who? When?”
Mat shrugged. “Some dude. Before you came in this morning. It was still dark.”
Anders stuffed the envelope into the pocket of his jeans. He looked at the line of papers—some his own, but others belonging to other employees or to regular patrons, often art students from UChicago—and tried to pick out what the man had bought.
“Was he a regular?”
Mat shrugged again. “Why? Looking for a sugar daddy?” he teased. “I think you’d be out of luck with that one. I nearly just told him to leave because he looked homeless. Who wears combat boots with tracksuit bottoms?”

The L was pretty empty this early in the morning.
He was normally still burrowed deep in his blanket in the “room” that he rented in a house far from the city center. He still was not convinced that it hadn’t been a coat closet that someone had punched a hole into to add a window—a legal requirement for something to be a bedroom. It was barely large enough for the twin sized mattress on the floor and an upturned milk crate for a table and several in another that held his clothes and the odds and ends that he had acquired since landing at O’Hare a month ago.
But he was curious about the person that had bought his sketch. It had to be the one of the eyes looking out of the darkness with an almost-Haiku scratched into the dark charcoal with an eraser.
He had to see who had bought it. Even if just for a moment.
“You’re early,” Mat accused.
Anders shrugged and moved to make himself a pour over.
“Money then coffee,” Mat held out his hand.
Anders fished two crumbled dollar bills and some coins from his pocket.
“I’ll get that.”
Anders and Mat both looked up sharply. They had not heard the bell over the door ring when the man entered. Anders would later swear that it had not.
“And I’ll get a caramel macchiato with extra whipped cream.”
Mat moved quickly after ringing the order up.
“Thanks.” Anders dropped his money back into his pocket.
“Would you be the “A. Johnson” that draw some of those pictures?”
Anders nearly inhaled some of his coffee. “Yeah. That’d be me. But I think you misread the price,” he fumbles with one hand for the envelope still in his back pocket, “it was only supposed to be $10.”
“I know.”
“Oh.”
They looked at each other in silence. There was the hum of machinery as Mat made the man’s drink. Anders boldly took in the man’s appearance, the boots and tracksuit bottoms, the bomber jacket over a very worn graphic t-shirt, the long hair, pale skin, and the red lips. Anders felt uncomfortably warm, but he did not stop staring. There was a small smirk on the man’s face, like he knew that he was being ogled and he didn’t mind at all.
“Ireland?” Anders asked to break the silence.
A nod. “New Zealand?”
“Yeah.”
“Mitchell,” the man offered his hand.
Anders’ automatically took it, his other hand burning the the heat of his coffee through the cardboard. “Anders.”
Mat put the drink down on the counter and looked at them both.
Mitchell released Anders’ hand and took the drink with its obscene mound of whipped cream.
“Wait!” Anders said, rounding the counter, nearly spilling his drink with his quick movements. “When will you be back?”
The man turned, an amused expression on his face. “Maybe tonight, maybe this same time tomorrow, maybe never.” He reached out and fixed the collar of Anders’ denim jacket. “Nice jacket, Anders.”
This time it was Anders’ turn to be consumed by someone’s eyes. He flushed, but he boldly stared back.
Mitchell’s smirk was back.
And then he was gone.

hi! i just finished reading ahb and i loved it more than most books or fics that i've read. it's beautifully written and brillant. you're simply incredible.
i'd like to print the paintings and important quotes about james and regulus to put them in my notebook. i looked at the link with the name of every painting mentioned but i'd like to ask you, please, if you could tell me which ones are only about them, not sirius remus or the heist ?

Jorgen Carlsson Leaves Gov’t Mule on Eve of Summer Tour; Kevin Scott is In
- “We thank (him) for all his incredible work,” band says of departing bassist
After 15 years, Gov’t Mule bassist Jorgen Carlsson is out of the band.
Kevin Scott, who filled in for Carlsson in 2022 when the bassist had COVID-19, will play with the group on its summer tour, beginning June 9 in Oregon.
Gov’t Mule announced the change in the third paragraph of a three-paragraph statement reminding fans about the tour and its new album, out June 16.
“Before we take the stage, we do want to let you know that our friend Kevin Scott will be joining us on bass,” the band said. “We thank Jorgen Carlsson for all his incredible work, including on Peace … Like a River and wish him the best.”
No reason was given and it’s unclear if Scott is officially Mule’s fourth bassist or a substitute. Either way, it’s an “honor - I have been a huge fan since I was in my early 20s,” Scott told Live for Live Music.
“I’m very excited for the future - to develop my own take on the catalog (and) also taking huge inspiration from (Allen) Woody, Andy (Hess) and Jorgen’s amazing bass work over the years.”

Random fact, some of my OCs definitely strongly resemble Parts but aren't like. Close enough that I would consider them to be the same or even super duper related. There's just a few things always that are too off for me to do that.
Seba - Andy (similarities - can be crass, very private, very independent | differences - Andy is more pessimistic/nihilistic, and definitely cares less about others, and some other just Vibes I can't put to words)
Tomas - Jakob (similarities - heavy burden of responsibility, frequently overwhelmed, hard workers | differences - Jakob is more outward about his frustration, less good with people, and has less resistance to Vices (alcohol, sex))
Hess - Nathaniel (NGL they're very similar. Except Nathaniel is a gay man. And possibly a little more like...IDK not pushy or loud. But less soft? Equally kind. He's just...IDK gay man-er about it but they have the same heart LOL)

Gay Dads of Birmingham 2.7.2024
Last night at Gay Dads of Birmingham I tried a new format for our conversation. I usually have an outline drafted with some commentary, quotes, research, and discussion questions. It's a great way to guide our conversation but can sometimes restrict our conversation.
In honor of Valentine's Day, I pulled together a bunch of quotes on singleness and relationships, put them in an envelope that we passed around the table, and every guy pulled out a quote, read it, and then we discussed it around the table.
The format and material made for a REALLY great conversation! Every person had a voice and everyone was so engaged. I will definitely use this format again! Here are the quotes that were in the envelope:
