Health Benefits Of Organic Sandalwood
Sandalwood, in its different forms, is used in almost all Indian rites. Its powder is as much a component of religious ceremonies as it is of weddings. Sandalwood paste, like turmeric paste, has long been thought to be a charm booster. Its merits, however, go well beyond its aesthetic appeal. Sandalwood is an aromatic hardwood harvested from the Santalum species of plants. The Indian component of this group, Santalum Album, provides pure rosewood. Other members of the family have wood with comparable qualities, but the woods and oil lose their aroma after a few extended periods. Sandalwood’s many qualities have been utilized in cosmetic treatments and medications for millennia.
Sandalwood essential oil is derived from the wood and roots of the East Indian sandalwood tree, Santalum album. This is one of the world’s most precious trees. Its goods are in use all around the world. In the past, West Indian and African sandalwood oils were also manufactured, but these are no longer commonly accessible. In alternative therapies, sandalwood and its active compounds are highly appreciated. It’s been used for centuries to cure a range of ailments. Although most of its traditional applications have not been scientifically validated, some study shows that sandalwood may be useful in the treatment of certain health issues.
Health Benefits of Sandalwood
The wood, skin, and essential oil of the plant are utilized. It is utilized in the creation of medicines for a variety of skin disorders and issues, both alone and in conjunction with other components. It is also a bodily refrigerant and is used as such in the summertime. Here are a few of the advantages of sandalwood:
Tumblr media
Sandalwood essential oil possesses astringent qualities that cause spasms in the jaws, tendons, and skin, despite its mildness. This is good in terms of increasing the gums’ grip on the teeth, muscular improvement, and skin rejuvenation.
Sandalwood oil is well-known for its antispasmodic properties. It’s due to the oil’s anxiolytic and muscle-relaxing qualities. It works by slowing muscle fibers, nerve fibers, and blood vessels, finally putting a stop to severe convulsions. Sandalwood essential oil can also be used to treat coughs, headaches, aches, and other symptoms induced by acute muscular spasms.
Sandalwood oil has magical abilities and is a valuable component in Hinduism. It is held sacred and is utilized for a variety of religious purposes. Other than that, sandalwood crude extract is used to prevent the spread of infection and congestion, as well as to treat skin issues, and may even be consumed. It is becoming more widely utilized in cosmetics as a result of its efficacy in treating skin disorders.
Sandal Wood Essential Oil works as a decongestant and is very useful for coughs. It also battles viral infections that cause sneezing, colds, flu, mumps, and other illnesses in the first place. Sandalwood oil is antiphlogistic, meaning it relieves inflammation and swelling by fevers and viral illnesses.
Thus, with the above-mentioned health plus points of organic sandalwood, one can proceed further to reap its benefits and improve their health and immunity by and large over some time.

How to Grow and Use Chamomile
The chamomile herb is an extremely useful sleeping agent for many who suffer from mild forms of insomnia. Besides this, a number of health benefits have been reported on consuming chamomile tea. The fresh or dried flowers are steeped in hot water to produce a mild tea which is both soothing and delicious! There are many different varieties of the herb. Some that grow wildly and some that are cultivated for use. Of the many varieties, only two- German chamomile and Roman chamomile- are used for drinking purposes. You can purchase these at your tea store or you can even choose to grow them!
How to Grow Chamomile
German chamomile grows from seeds sown directly in their garden location. The delicate seeds are very tiny and should be handled with care. The best way to plant these is to scatter the seeds over the prepared bed and then gently tapping the soil with the flat side of a hoe or the back of a spade. This variety of chamomile is planted when temperatures hit 10C, so its best to grow chamomile in colder countries. It usually germinates within a week to ten days. Flowering occurs in anywhere between eight to ten weeks. Blooms develop continuously, and once flowering commences, harvesting is possible every ten days to two weeks. Roman chamomile can be started from seeds or cuttings, or by root division. While German chamomiles can withstand a bit of frost, the Roman variety needs full sun. The seedling should have a six to twelve-inch spacing ad planted in a slightly acidic to neutral soil with good drainage. A rich soil will produce lush leaf growth but few flowers. It is excellent, but slow-growing, ground cover for cooler areas. Roman chamomile does not tolerate hot, dry weather. It has approximately the same harvest time as German chamomile. Once harvested both varieties can be dried and stored. They both make excellent teas. One simply needs to add a few chamomile flowers to a cup of hot water and allow it to steep for 4-5 minutes. Since chamomile has an extremely mild flavor, this tea will never be too strong to the taste, but one can steep the tea longer if desired. It is best to avoid any additions to the tea, be it milk, sugar, or honey as it will completely overpower the flavor of the tea. Now, pick a cup, steep the tea, sit back, and enjoy! It contains antioxidants.
As a dermatologist, I know that clean skin is better able to absorb actives in your therapeutic skin care products. Dirt, oil, dead cells and residual makeup and product block absorption. Using a witch hazel toner after cleansing your skin will get your skin even cleaner.
Clean skin usually has a more radiant, dewy and smoother texture.
What is witch hazel?
It is an extract from the bark of a plant called Hamamelis virginiana.
What is the best witch hazel to use for skin care?
Not all witch hazel is the same.
The best extract with skin benefits comes from only the twigs and bark.
Some commercial witch hazel products contain a lot of alcohol, which is drying.
Dr. Bailey Skin Care Pore Minimizing Toner contains the best and highest quality organic witch hazel bark extract.
It is made with only the active portion of the witch hazel plant known to be rich in skin care benefits.
My toner also is made with the highest quality organic Bulgarian rose hydrosol.
I mix these two precious elements of the formulation with organic vegetable derived glycerin and hyaluronic acid to hydrate skin while toning pores.
My Pore Minimizing Toner is 100% vegan, made with certified organic ingredients, is eco-friendly, safe for you and the environment, and is free of artificial fragrance/dyes/colors, parabens, formaldehyde, sufates, surfactants, silicones, phthalates, petro-chemicals

5 Factors to Utilize Witch Hazel in Your Skin Care Program
You should think about including Hamamelis virginiana, much better referred to as witch hazel, to your skin care routine . Witch hazel has a number of proven benefits for your skin. There are also numerous a lot more advantages that have been observed throughout background, however have actually not been subjected to rigorous scientific research study. Several homes consist of a container of witch hazel in the shower room cupboard together with all the medications and emergency treatment package - as well as completely reason. Witch hazel is valuable and helpful to have about. What can witch hazel possibly provide for your skin? The solution to that question is made complex. The reason it's made complex is that that the distilled witch hazel offered in medicine shops may not include the correct amount of one of the most powerful medicinal active ingredients of Hamamelis virginiana, such as the tannins (see listed below). That stated, witch hazel bark has actually been shown to have the adhering to benefits when applied to the skin:.
It functions as a topical antioxidant similar to environment-friendly tea. It has polyphenolic substances that might protect skin from sunburn and also photoaging. Naturally, you still require sunscreen. It provides an anti-inflammatory benefit after sunburn, indicating it can relieve sunburn pain as well as inflammation. It can assist soothe inflamed skin. It has actually been revealed to soothe soreness and also reduced the loss of your body's natural wetness when applied to irritated skin. It has some weak effectiveness versus a few of the usual bacteria such as Staph, Yeast infection, and also viruses like the herpes infection as well as influenza. Individuals have actually used it for years as a non-irritating skin toner to assist eliminate skin oils. In my opinion, it beats alcohol for that task on delicate skin.
Witch hazel has likewise been proclaimed as assisting recover bruises and also treating varicose blood vessels as well as hemorrhoids. I don't thi nk there is any kind of actual proof for these claims though. Just the application of something that's cooling down to the skin will certainly restrict capillary. I also might not discover any great evidence for resolution of bruising with making use of witch hazel, though the anti-inflammatory impact in theory may aid with discomfort as well as swelling from a bruise. The bottom line is that witch hazel is practically safe, so it makes an excellent natural remedy to explore on skin inflammations like insect attacks, acne soreness, sunburn, inflamed skin, etc. I likewise believe it makes an outstanding face skin toner. A note regarding theorizing scientific as well as folk medicine results to contemporary industrial preparations:. Commonly, witch hazel was used by Indigenous Americans after it was prepared in a product. A preparation is the steaming of something, like the bark of the witch hazel plant, to extract much of the elements, consisting of the tannins (with all the excellent anti-oxidants), the important oils, as well as the saponins (soap-like fraction). Readily generated witch hazel is distilled, which is various. Scientific researches are primarily done on concentrated portions of the witch hazel parts. This suggests that you can not exactly equate the results. That stated, witch hazel is safe as well as time recognized in American homes. I directly like right stuff and also use it in my method. It means that it's OKAY in my opinion to try out it, naturally within great sound judgment. We make use of witch hazel as a facial toner in our aesthetician therapies. I utilize it myself in a toner that we make in my office. I utilized it as a teen as well for my acne-prone skin. We likewise use it in our laser collection to eliminate skin-numbing medication before procedures. It's a classic skin treatment item with many usages. I wish to collect your witch hazel natural remedy. What have you utilized it for? Did it work or not? Allow's share our experiences . Recommendations:. Curel Blog Advertorial
“Do you know that excess sebum can aggravate skin sensitivity?
Quick explanation of Sebum:
Sebaceous glands produce a substance called sebum which is responsible for keeping the skin and hair moisturized. Sebum is a light yellow, oily fluid.During adolescence, sebaceous glands enlarge and produce more sebum under the influence of hormones called androgens. After about age 20, sebum production begins to decrease. (yeah right I'm 20 but my face is still so oily)Sebum produced by the sebaceous gland combines with cells being sloughed off within the hair follicle and "fills up" the hair follicle. When the follicle is "full," the sebum spreads over the skin surface giving the skin an oily appearance. When this process works correctly, the skin is moisturized and remains healthy. If not enough sebum is produced, the skin is dry. On the other hand, if too much sebum is produced the skin is oily, a condition called seborrhea. If sebum gets trapped in the pores, acne can develop.
A lot of people who have both conditions – skin sensitivity and oily skin tend to place more emphasis on choosing products that help with their skin sensitivity.
This is not enough”
2015, Curel Advertorial Blog article
. Excess sebum generated will deteriorate as skin gets more alkaline, turning into irritants to cause flare-ups within the skin layers.
Hence it is important to choose products that effectively control skin sensitivity while reducing sebum secretion from the source.
It's pointed out a billion times to us that oil causes acne and pimples - but drying your face out with anti-oily cleansers isn't good as well so here's something that will help you:
if you are like me with super horrible sensitive and oily combination skin.
Introducing Curél!
Curél,
Japan’s No. 1 brand for sensitive Asian skin, introduces a new skincare range specially formulated for sensitive and oily or combination skin types. The Curél Sebum Care range - comprising a Foaming Wash, Lotion and Moisture Gel - ofers the skincare essentials to properly manage both skin sensitivity and sebum secretion.
When I got notified that I was to do a review on Curél, I was ecstatic, over the moon - I became a literal Cheshire cat perched at my mailbox just waiting and waiting and WAITING for this product to finally reach me. I waited for quite a bit but I didn't receive it and honestly I was quite disappointed: only to realize that it had reached someone else's mailbox lol.
Thank you kind sir/mam for being humbly honest and returning my package to me.
If you've been reading my posts you should know how much I rave these ingenious Japanese people and their incredible products, and here I am, raving about it again because heck their products are really good.
Let's start with the basics -
sensitive and oily skin
how does it happen?
Ceramide is THE essential ingredient in skin as it replenishes and helps retain moisture, strengthening the skin’s resilience as a natural barrier against external irritants. The lack of ceramide weakens this natural barrier, causing skin to be more susceptible to irritants.
Cause of oily skin: Excess sebum secretion
Diet and changes in hormone levels can lead to excess sebum secretion. Not only does this result in
an unwanted oily shine on the face, excess sebum on skin that is not thoroughly removed can be
damaging to the skin as well.
Healthy skin has a pH level of 5.5. When the pH level of skin changes, excess sebum disintegrates
into an irritating substance that penetrates into the skin and causes skin sensitivity from within.
When the skin’s barrier function is weakened due to the lack of ceramide, it will be even more susceptible to the damage from disintegrated sebum.
With  Curél's dynamic dual function to control sensitivity and sebum, we take this science lesson to a whole new level!
One: Strengthening skin barrier function
Understanding the importance of ceramide in skin, Curél has made ceramide the key ingredient for
all its products. Its hydrating and penetrating moisture-retaining ceramide effectively restores ceramide function in skin. Not to mention, Curél Sebum Care range also protects the skin’s natural ceramide while cleansing, effectively replenishes ceramide and retains moisture.
When skin stays supple and fully moisturised, it is better protected against external irritants.
Two: Oil and acne control
Curél developed its unique sebum zero-in control technology, which targets and regulates sebum excretion from deep within the skin to control the root of the problem. Curél Sebum Care range is also specially formulated to re-balance skin at its optimal pH level, preventing sebum from disintegration.
Infused with antiphlogistic, an active ingredient that relieves inflammation, the range helps prevent
the occurrence of acne as well.
With the three products, we start with the foaming wash first, applying the lotion next and finally the moisture gel for optimal results!
Curél Sebum Care Foaming Wash
Ultra fine foam with sebum solvent to thoroughly cleanse dirt and excess sebum
while protectng ceramide.
Directions:
1. Apply two full pumps directly onto wet skin.
2. Do not lather.
3. Gentle massage and rinse off thoroughly
The foam is amazing! It doesn't make your face feel any tightness but at the same time it makes your skin feel super dewy like and soft to the touch! No dryness just smooth supple baby skin! Bye, bye oil!
Curél Sebum Care Lotion
Non-sticky formula prepares skin for better absorption of moisturiser / essence that is used after the lotion.
Directions
:
1. After cleansing, apply lotion gently over the whole face.
2. Apply twice daily, in the morning and at night.
It says lotions but man it's not even sticky at all! It's basically just like water and all you have to do is just apply it all over your face - just like gently placing a layer of angel holy water over: oh how I love the lightness of it.
Curél Sebum Care Moisture Gel
Liquid based gel spreads easily for speedy absorption into deeper layers of skin
without leaving skin sticky.
Directions:
1. Apply three to four pumps gently over the entire face
2. Apply twice daily, in the morning and at night.
The moisture gel that does not feel sticky and actually prevents the skin from becoming oily - also preventing pimples and acne from forming! Like all the products, it's very light on the skin and after usage you barely even feel it there! It's magic water I tell ya!
It's super refreshing after you use all these products it's magical, holy water I swear.
Every day after usage, skin will be kept in matte condition for 8 hours.
In 4 weeks, skin sensitivity and excess sebum will be under control.
Can you believe it? I'm going to try it out myself for 4 weeks and test out this amazing product, so far it hasn't even disappointed me yet!

Achillea millefolium
Achillea millefolium
"Yarrow" redirects here. For other uses, see Yarrow (disambiguation). Achillea millefolium, commonly known as yarrow /ˈjæroʊ/ or common yarrow, is a flowering plant in the family Asteraceae. It is native to temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere in Asia, Europe, and North America. It has been introduced as a feed for live stock in places like New Zealand and Australia. However, it is a weed in those places and sometimes also in its native regions. In New Mexico and southern Colorado, it is called plumajillo (Spanish for 'little feather') from its leaf shape and texture. In antiquity, yarrow was known as herbal militaris, for its use in stanching the flow of blood from wounds. Other common names for this species include gordaldo, nosebleed plant, old man's pepper, devil's nettle, sanguinary, milfoil, soldier's woundwort, thousand-leaf, and thousand-seal. Description
Yarrow leaves
Pollination A. millefolium is an erect, herbaceous, perennial plant that produces one to several stems 0.2–1 m (0.66–3.28 ft) in height, and has a spreading rhizomatous growth form. Leaves are evenly distributed along the stem, with the leaves near the middle and bottom of the stem being the largest. The leaves have varying degrees of hairiness (pubescence). The leaves are 5–20 cm (2.0–7.9 in) long, bipinnate or tripinnate, almost feathery, and arranged spirally on the stems. The leaves are cauline, and more or less clasping. The inflorescence has 4 to 9 phyllaries and contains ray and disk flowers which are white to pink. The generally 3 to 8 ray flowers are ovate to round. Disk flowers range from 15 to 40. The inflorescence is produced in a flat-topped capitulum cluster and the inflorescences are visited by many insects, featuring a generalized pollination system. The small achene-like fruits are called cypsela. The plant has a strong, sweet scent, similar to that of chrysanthemums. Distribution Yarrow grows from sea level to 3,500 metres (11,500 ft) in elevation. The plant commonly flowers from May through June. Common yarrow is frequently found in the mildly disturbed soil of grasslands and open forests. Active growth occurs in the spring. The plant is native to Eurasia and is found widely from the UK to China. In North America, both native and introduced genotypes, and both diploid and polyploid plants are found. It is found in every habitat throughout California except the Colorado and Mojave Deserts. Common yarrow produces an average yield of 43,000 plants per acre, with a total dry weight of 10,500 lbs. The plant is found in Australia as an introduction. Clusters of 15 to 40 tiny disk flowers surrounded by three to eight white to pink ray flowers are, in turn, arranged in a flat-topped inflorescence (Wenatchee Mountains, Washington).
Pink flowers

Achillea millefolium 'Paprika' cultivar
Achillea millefolium cultivar Achillea millefolium is cultivated as an ornamental plant by many plant nurseries. It is planted in gardens and natural landscaping settings of diverse climates and styles. They include native plant, drought-tolerant, and wildlife gardens. The plant is a frequent component of butterfly gardens. The plant prefers well-drained soil in full sun, but can be grown in less ideal conditions. For propagation, seeds require light for germination, so optimal germination occurs when planted no deeper than one-quarter inch (6 mm). Seeds also require a germination temperature of 18–24 °C (64–75 °F). It has a relatively short life in some situations, but may be prolonged by division in the spring every other year, and planting 12 to 18 in (30–46 cm) apart. It can become invasive. The species use in traditional gardens has generally been superseded by cultivars with specific 'improved' qualities. Some are used as drought tolerant lawn replacements, with periodic mowing. The many different ornamental cultivars include: 'Paprika', 'Cerise Queen', 'Red Beauty', 'Red Velvet', 'Saucy Seduction', 'Strawberry Seduction' (red), 'Island Pink' (pink), and 'Calistoga' (white), and 'Sonoma Coast' (white). Several, including 'Kelwayi', and 'Lansdorferglut' (both pink) have gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. The many hybrids of this species designated Achillea x taygetea are useful garden subjects, including: 'Appleblossom', 'Fanal', 'Hoffnung', and 'Moonshine'. Yarrow is considered an especially useful companion plant, repelling some pest insects while attracting good, predatory ones. It attracts predatory wasps, which drink the nectar and then use insect pests as food for their larvae. Similarly, it attracts ladybirds and hoverflies. A. millefolium can be planted to combat soil erosion due to the plant's resistance to drought. Before the arrival of monocultures of ryegrass, both grass leys and permanent pasture always contained A. millefolium at a rate of about 0.3 kg/ha. At least one of the reasons for its inclusion in grass mixtures was its deep roots, with leaves rich in minerals. Thus its inclusion helped to prevent mineral deficiencies in the ruminants to which it was fed. It was introduced into New Zealand as a drought-tolerant pasture. It is very prevalent. Yarrow has also been used as a food or in teas, and was very popular as a vegetable in the 17th century. The younger leaves are said to be a pleasant leaf vegetable when cooked like spinach, or in a soup. Yarrow is sweet with a slight bitter taste. The leaves can also be dried and used as an herb in cooking. In the Middle Ages, yarrow was part of an herbal mixture known as gruit used in the flavoring of beer prior to the use of hops. The flowers and leaves are used in making some liquors and bitters. This section needs more medical references for verification or relies too heavily on primary sources. Recently it was reported that treatment with Achillea millefolium may attenuate disease severity, inflammatory responses, and demyelinating lesions in a mouse model of Multiple Sclerosis. In rare cases, yarrow can cause severe allergic skin rashes; prolonged use can increase the skin's photosensitivity. This can be triggered initially when wet skin comes into contact with cut grass and yarrow together. In one study, aqueous extracts of yarrow impaired the sperm production of laboratory rats. Several cavity-nesting birds, including the common starling, use yarrow to line their nests. Experiments conducted on the tree swallow, which does not use yarrow, suggest that adding yarrow to nests inhibits the growth of parasites. Its essential oil kills the larvae of the mosquito Aedes albopictus.

21 Amazing Benefits of Helichrysum Essential Oil
The health benefits of helichrysum essential oil can be attributed to its properties as an antispasmodic, anticoagulant, antiallergenic, anti-microbial, anti-hematoma, antiphlogistic, nervine, anti-inflammatory, antitussive, cicatrizant, and an expectorant. It also acts as a febrifuge, antiseptic, cholagogic, emollient, mucolytic, fungicidal, hepatic, diuretic, splenic, and a cytophylactic substance.
Helichrysum, the flower that contributes to the “everlasting” and “immortal” essential oil, and known by the names Helichrysum angustifolium and Helichrysum italicum, is a European herb native to France, Italy, and a few neighboring countries. It is a very costly oil and scarcely available, but unlike other essential oils which have a short shelf life, this oil can be stored for a very long time.
Health Benefits of Helichrysum Essential Oil
This essential oil has a wide range of remarkable medicinal properties. Some of the most notable are listed below.
Treats Spasms
A spasm is an unwanted, unbalanced, or excessive contraction in the body. It may occur in the respiratory tract, lungs, muscles, nerves or intestines and may result in severe coughs, breathlessness, cramps, convulsions, and severe abdominal pains. In extreme cases, spasms can even be fatal. Therefore, it is always advisable to treat it immediately. helichrysum essential oil is ideal for helping these types of conditions. It is an antispasmodic and can give you quick relief in case a spasm begins, and it can also work as a preventative agent if inhaled regularly.
Curbs Hemorrhaging
This is a very important and life-saving feature of helichrysum essential oil. It may be somewhat difficult to believe for those who think that only a hemostatic or styptic can help as they can curb hemorrhaging. However, as an anticoagulant, helichrysum essential oil can be a blessing for those who run the risk of heart attacks due to the thickening of blood because of a high cholesterol content. It can immediately provide relief in such cases by liquefying or thinning the blood. These days, extensive research is going on to derive anticoagulants from natural substances (even saliva from mosquitoes and vampire bats is being considered), since heart diseases and cases of heart attacks are growing at an alarming rate.
Prevents Allergies
This quality can also save your life in certain situations. Perhaps you may think it is an exaggeration because allergies are limited to some rashes on the skin and stomach aches. You might be surprised to know that these are only external symptoms or expressions of allergy. Allergies first show up in internal organs such as the liver, spleen, lungs, respiratory tracts, intestines, and even heart, and in extreme cases may result in severe attacks of asthma, cardiac arrest, unbearable pain in the stomach, convulsions, and even death. So why risk your life? Keep this oil within reach and use it without delay before visiting a doctor if you think that you may be experiencing a severe allergic reaction.
Dissolves Blood Clots
The essential oil of helichrysum helps clear the accumulation of blood or blood clots which result from a hemorrhage. This can be very helpful in clearing blood clots out of the brain after a brain hemorrhage. These clots often interfere with the normal functioning of the brain. It also helps dissolve or melt away such clots by stimulating the enzymes which do that.
Lowers Fever
Helichrysum essential oil is effective in reducing inflammation resulting from fever since it is an antiphlogistic. This can help the patient feel less worn out and exhausted during fever, and it also aids in reducing the frequency of fever.
Relieves Inflammation
Apart from giving relief to inflammation resulting from fever, this oil also provides relief from inflammation due to other causes and generally soothes the body.
Treats Cough
Being an antitussive, helichrysum oil gives relief from coughs that are stimulated by phlegm in the respiratory tracts or by itchiness in the throat caused by infections.
Protects Nervous System
Helichrysum oil is nervine, which means that it keeps your nervous system in order, strengthens it, and protects it from disorders. Regular use can protect you from nervous disorders that result from aging. It can help you reduce anxiety over insignificant things and generally lower stress levels.
Fights Infections
Fever is not a disease in itself; it is just a symptom which shows that the immune system of our body is fighting against infections or unwanted substances. This is why you will rarely see fever as a solitary symptom. It always accompanies colds, viral infections, bacterial infections or infections from wounds, liver malfunctions, pox, boils, allergic reactions or arthritis. Helichrysum oil, since it is also an antiallergenic, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antitussive, cicatrizant, fungicidal, and antiseptic substance, helps not only cure the root of fever but also reduces the fever itself.
Heals Scars
This property of helichrysum essential oil makes your wounds and cuts heal quickly and scar marks disappear fast. It is equally effective in clearing up spots left on your skin by pox, boils, and other skin irregularities.
Acts as Expectorant
Helichrysum essential oil is also an expectorant. It provides warmth to the respiratory system, which loosens the deposition of phlegm there and does not allow new phlegm to be deposited. It gives relief from a continuous cough and congestion that show a sign of infection or illness.
Promotes Digestion
Helichrysum oil has cholagogic properties, which means that it promotes the discharge of bile into the stomach and helps neutralize acids, thereby promoting digestion, curing acidity, and reducing symptoms of acidosis.
Inhibits Microbial Growth
Helichrysum Oil inhibits microbial growth and protects the body against a long list of microbial infections.
Heals Wounds
This oil does not allow your wounds to become septic. It can be safely applied to wounds, cuts, pricks, and any other open sores that may attract infection.
Prevents Dehydration
This property of helichrysum oil makes the skin smooth, soft and helps it retain moisture. It prevents dehydration and cracking of the skin as well.
Mucolytic Properties
Mucus helps keep all the internal tracts (larynx, pharynx, trachea, bronchi, food pipe, intestines etc.) moist and slippery, thereby protecting them from scratches and infections. Mucus is essential for the body and without it, these tracts may suffer from severe wounds and infections. However, a problem occurs when it starts depositing and thickening in the respiratory system following an infection. The same mucus results in coughs and congestion. Being a mucolytic, helichrysum oil promotes the thinning of excess or hardened mucus through hydrolysis and its removal from the body along with normal excretions. This can effectively cure congestion and coughs resulting from cold and other illnesses.
Stimulates Urination
Helichrysum essential oil has diuretic properties, such as promoting and facilitating urination, both in frequency and in quantity, thereby helping the removal of toxic substances from the blood through urine. Urination also helps in lowering blood pressure, losing weight by eliminating fat, and improving digestion.
Treats Anemia
This property of helichrysum essential oil can be very beneficial for people suffering from anemia. The spleen is involved in the production and recycling of red blood cells, and having a healthy spleen means that you never run short of blood. This essential oil keeps your spleen healthy and free from infections.
Maintains Cell Health
Helichrysum oil promotes cell health, encourages the recycling of dead cells, and stimulates the production of new cells. This helps in the overall growth and repair of the body. This property can be beneficial for growing children or children who have obstructed growth.
Improves Liver Health
Being a hepatic, this oil soothes the liver, relieves it of inflammation, regulates its discharges, protects it from infections, and keeps it healthy, active, and strong.
Prevents Fungal Infections
Fungal infections are some of the most dangerous types of infections. This oil prohibits and inhibits fungal infections very effectively.
Other Benefits
This powerful oil also detoxifies the liver, relieves congestion, neutralizes effects of nicotine and caffeine, and helps cure herpes, cystitis, arthritis, sinusitis, colitis, neuralgia, and varicose veins. It has an uplifting effect on the mental function and improves meridian flow.
Word of Caution: No toxic or irritating effects have been observed or reported from the use of this oil, but being an anticoagulant, those who have undergone surgery or have chances of internal hemorrhaging should avoid using it.
How to Use?
You should always consult an aromatherapist before using essential oils, including helichrysum oil. Essential oils are very strong, so they should not be used without proper consultation with medical professionals.

Dr. West & West syndrome
WEST SYNDROME Sir: I beg, through your valuable and extensively circulating Journal, to call the attention of the medical profession to a very rare and singular species of convulsion peculiar to young children. As the only case I have witnessed is in my own child, I shall be very grateful to any member of the profession who can give me any information on the subject, either privately or through your excellent Publication. The child is now near a year old; was a remarkably fine, healthy child when born, and continued to thrive till he was four mounths old. It was at this time that I first observed slight bobbings of the head forward, which I then regarded as a trick, but were, in fact, the first indications of disease; for these bobbings increased in frequency, and at length became so frequent and powerful, as to cause a complete heaving of the head forward towards his knees, and then immediately relaxing into the upright position, something similar to the attacks of emprosthotonos: these bowings and relaxings would be repeated alternately at intervals of a few seconds, and repeated from ten to twenty or more times at each attack, which attack would not continue more than two or three minutes; he sometimes has two, three, or more attacks in the day; they come on whether sitting or lying; just before they come on he is all alive and in motion, making a strange noise, and then all of a sudden down goes his head and upwards his knees; he then appears frightened and screams out: at one time he lost flesh, looked pale and exhausted, but latterly he has regained his good looks, and, independent of this affection is a fine grown child, but he neither posseses the intellectual vivacity or the power of moving his limbs, of a child of his age; he never cries at the time of the attacks, or smiles or takes any notice, but looks placid and pitiful, yet his hearing, and vision are good; he has no power of holding himself upright or using his limbs, and his head falls without support. Although I have had an extensive practice among women and children, and a large circle of medical friends, I have never heard or witnessed a similar complaint before. The view I took of it was that, most probably, it depended on some irritation of the nervous system from teething; and, as the child was strong and vigorous, I commenced an active treatment of leeches and cold applications to the head, repeated calomel purgatives, and the usual antiphlogistic treament; the gums were lanced, and the child frequently put into warm baths. Notwithstanding a steady perseverance in this plan for three or four weeks, he got worse, the attacks being more numerous, to the amount of fifty or sixty in the course of a day. I then had recourse to sedatives, syrup of poppies, conium, and opium, without any relief: at seven months old he cut four teeth nearly altogether without any abatement of the symptoms, and, up to this period, he was supported solely at the breast; but now, at the eighth month, I had him weaned, as he had lost flesh and appeared worse; I then only gave him alteratives, and occasionally castor-oil. Finding no benefit from all that had been done, I took the child to London, and had a consultation with Sir Charles Clarke and Dr. Locock, both of whom recognised the complaint; the former, in all his extensive pratice, had only seen four cases, and, from the peculiar bowing of the head, called it the "salaam convulsion"; the latter gentleman had only seen two cases; one was the child of a widow lady, it came on while she was in Italy, and, in her anxiety, she consulted the most eminent professional gentlemen of Naples, Rome, Florence, Genoa, and Paris, one of whom alone seemed to recognise the complaint. In another case, mercury, corrosive sublimate, opium, zinc, and the preparations of iron, were tried without the slightest advantage; and, about six months from the commencement of the symtoms, a new one was added; there began a loss of motion, in the whole of the right side, and the child could scarcely use either arm, hand, or leg. Sir Astley Cooper saw the child in this state; he had never seen or heard of such a case, and gave it as his opinion, that "it either arose from disease of the brain and the child will not recover, or it proceeds merely from teething, and, when the child cuts all its teeth, may probably get well"; some time after, this child was suddenly seized with acute fever; the head became hot, and there were two remaining teeth pressing on the gums; the child was treated accordingly; leeches to the head, purged, and lowered; the gums were freely lanced; in a few days the teeth came through, and the child recovered, and from that time the convulsive movements never returned. Sir C. Clarke knows the result of only two of his cases: one perfectly recovered; the other became paralytic and idiotic; lived several years in that state, and died at the age of 17 years. I have heard of two other cases, which lived one to the age of 17, the other 19 years, idiotic, and then died. I wrote to Drs. Evanson and Maunsell, of Dublin; the former gentleman being in Italy, the latter very kindly replied, he had seen convulsive motions in one finger, arm, or leg, but had never witnessed it to the extent of my poor child. As there has been no opportunity of a post-mortem examination the pathology of this singular disease is totally unknown. Although this may be a very rare and singular affection, and only noticed by two of our most eminent physicians, I am, from all I have learnt, convinced that it is a disease (sui generis) which, from its infrequency, has escaped the attention of the profession. I therefore hope you will give it the fullest publicity, as this paper might rather be extended than curtailed. I am, Sir, one of your subscribers from the commencement, your faithful and obedient servant,

Sandalwood Continues to be Highly Prized
Historical and Current Uses
Sandalwood, or Santalum, is identified as belonging to the Santalaceae family. This small tree reaching to about 10 meters is indigenous to Indonesia, the Pacific Islands, Australia and India. Much of the commercial production of sandalwood comes from Santalum album (India) and Santalum spicatum (Australia). Although both of these species are considered true sandalwoods, there are other species commonly called sandalwood that are not included in the Santalum genus and are therefore have differing compositions. These unrelated plants are sometimes used as fillers to reduce the price of the increasingly expensive Santalum oil yet are considered of inferior quality. Research has identified a wide spectrum of applications for both the simple essential oil and its active components. Traditional and ceremonial uses of sandalwood continue to be an important part of cultures around the world.
Sandalwood from the Mysore region (known as “sandalwood city”) of southern India is generally considered to be of the highest quality sandalwood available, providing great commerce for this region of India. Of the traditional areas in Southeast Asia where sandalwood is found, India has been the front runner in creating plantations in which to continually harvest Sandalwood (The Australian Government has also set up reserves as well). Trade and harvest of Indian sandalwood is under strict regulation and the trees themselves are under government protection; only the government of India is permitted to own the trees. To produce commercially valuable sandalwood with high levels of fragrance oils, harvested Santalum trees are recommended to be at least 40 years of age, but 80 or above are preferred. However, trees at 30 years of age are still harvested but considered of inferior quality.
Much of the valuable wood is found in the roots of sandalwood and thus harvested by uprooting the entire tree versus cutting it at the trunk. In the last few years alone, the price of sandalwood has skyrocketed, mainly due to rising demand and limited supply. Increased demand has mainly come from the perfume and aromatherapy industry. Sandalwood essential oil and paste is used in Indian and Chinese medicine and of course aromatherapy botanical medicine. The perfume industry covets this oil for its ability to blend well with other perfume oils; hence, it is used extensively in hundreds of cosmetic products.
Such value is found not only in its iconic-making wood, medicinal oil and fragrance but also in it religious and ceremonial value. In the Buddhist tradition, sandalwood incense is a popular offering to the Buddha and its scent is believed to have transformative qualities while in meditation. Chinese and Japanese religions also use sandalwood incense in their worship and various ceremonies. One of the oldest religions, Zoroastrianism (thought to be originally from Iran), burns the sandalwood in their sacred fire temples.
Sandalwood Used to Fight Anti-microbial Bacteria
In late December of 2009 a length article by the Associated Press entitled “Pressure Rises to Stop Antibiotics in Agriculture” reported on rapidly emerging bacteria that are resistant to current antibiotics from supposed misuse of antibiotics in the agriculture industry. It was all over the internet in a matter of days. The article provides quotes from professors, researchers as well as government agencies all expressing deep concern and even alarm at the rate of microbial resistance to standard treatment. The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) web page includes recent studies regarding antimicrobial resistance in Escherichia coli and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MSRA) (both of which cause great harm to humans and animals alike) linked to heavy uses in food agriculture. This scientifically sound web site also provided a press conference statement (way back in 2001) by Margaret Mellon, Ph.D., director of UCS Food and Environment Program stating that 70% of total antibiotic production is devoted to non-therapeutic uses in the cattle, swine and poultry industry. It seems plausible that over the last nine years since this press release, microbes have developed an armor of resistance to antibiotic treatments.
Hospital-acquired infections and antibiotic-resistant bacteria continue to be major health concerns worldwide. In a recent study conducted by the University of Keil, Germany in their Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (Journal of Cranio-Maxillo-Facial Surgery 2009 Oct.; 37(7): 392-7) researchers found that sandalwood oil in vitro demonstrated an effective treatment for antibiotic-resistant strains as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) (a cause of severe soft tissue, bone or implant infections in hospitals) and antimycotic (antifungal)-resistant Candida species. Another microbe that plagues humans is Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori). This Gram-negative bacterium is thought to be harbored by over 50% of the world’s population and is strongly linked to the development of duodenal and gastric ulcers as well as stomach cancer. A 2006 study by the Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Tokushima, Japan (Journal of Natural Products 2005 Jun; 68(6): 819-24) found that the crude extract as well as isolated compounds of sandalwood essential oil showed antibacterial activity against H. pylori.
Additional Applications
The Australian and Indian Santalum species, found to be similar in chemical composition, are known by aromatherapists to have such therapeutic properties as anti-inflammatory, antiphlogistic (reduces fever), antiseptic (as mentioned above), antispasmodic (relieves muscle spasms), astringent, carminative (relieves flatulence), demulcent (reduces irritation), diuretic (soft and soothing to skin), emollient, expectorant, as a sedative and general tonic. Their principle chemical constituents are alpha-santalol and beta-santalol. According to a study conducted by the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences and South Dakota University (Anticancer Research 2007 Jul-Aug; 27(4B): 2185-8) application of the chemical compound alpha-santalol prevents UVB-induced skin tumor development in mice. Sandalwood is also thought to help alleviate the symptoms of depression as reported by the University of Maryland Medical Center (www.umm.edu).
Summing It Up
It is rather evident that the value of sandalwood extends across centuries and continents. It is revered by various religions, scientists, aromatherapists and perfume enthusiasts alike. What is remarkable is that uses of plants and their essential oils are bringing such world-wide engagement as their promising applications are uncovered in scientific research. A need for alternatives to conventional antibiotics as well as insecticides is clear. As less-than amiable agriculture practices surface and resistance to current antimicrobials increase, it is apparent that humankind will revert back to solutions found in nature and perhaps make a more diligent effort to conserve the very earth that sustains us.
