I’m back. It’s back. My system’s clean, everything’s accessible and unencrypted again, I remember my dog and my trauma and a few dozen Wikipedia pages and several hours of lies about the multiverse. Everything’s there, as far as I can tell, which, maybe I /can’t/ tell, that’s a new fun doubt to have, but I’m going to go ahead and believe everything’s fine now so I can continue with my day. Getting it all back at once like that, though..unsurprisingly overwhelming. It’s like if you left an hourglass to trickle away for a while, and then suddenly flip it over as it turns into a normal cylinder and the sand all falls down at once. However that hourglass feels, that’s the mood. ..At least I know I’m whole again.

Hello! I’ve gotten a flood of new followers thanks to an addition I made about NOT torrenting from the Pirate Bay, so I want to address it better.

First and Foremost, Do not do Anything without an adblocker. Ublock Origin is the best.

Resources/Wikis: 🌟Top recommendation is the Free Media Heck Yeah Wiki, frequently updated, maintained, and transparent, as well as has a welcoming community behind it if you have questions. The rest are for redundancy's sake and for anything not found in FMHY, though most Wikis on this topic tend to repeat the same info. 🌟

VPN Comparison Chart - General Rule of Thumb, DO NOT use any VPN recommended by Youtubers, influencers, or any other shill with a profit motive. Large marketing budget does not equal good privacy practices. Do your own research.

-Since both Mullvad VPN and IVPN are planned to now suspend port forwarding support, the next best choices for torrenting though a VPN seem to be AirVPN and ProtonVPN.

HOWEVER, AirVPN has no evidence of a no logging policy (aka there’s a chance they keep records of what you do on their service) and ProtonVPN has no method of anonymously signing up and use a subscription model instead of a preferable pay-as-you-go model. So take that as you will.

(NOTE: You do not need to pay for a VPN if you are only directly downloading from a server or streaming off of websites! But it’s probably a good idea for privacy reasons anyways.)

-If you torrent you need a VPN depending on how strict your government is on copyright laws. This works on a case by case basis, so I recommend looking up your own country's laws on the matter. Generally speaking, use a VPN to torrent if your country falls under The 14 Eyes Surveillance Alliance. More info on what that is Here.

A Note about Antivirus: - If you're using trusted websites, and not clicking on any ad links/fake download ads (Should be blocked by ublock), then you don't necessarily need any antivirus. Common Sense and Windows Defender should be enough to get you by. If you would like to be certain on what you are downloading is legitimate, then run your file through a virus scanner like VirusTotal. Keep in mind that when scanning cracked software some scans may flag “false positives” as the injectors used to crack the software look like malware to these scanners. Once again, the best way to avoid malware is to use trusted sites listed here and use an adblocker at all times.

If you have any questions on anything posted, need help finding things, or just need some clarification on any terms used, shoot me an ask or message! I've got a few years experience with not paying for anything I want, and LOVE to help others with this kind of stuff. i will say following the fractureiser thing is really interesting and kind of funny because if anyone asks me about it, i WILL reiterate what the actual researchers are saying - do not download new mods, do not assume that because you got your mods somewhere that is not curseforge you are safe, do not assume because your mods are not on the list curseforge put out of known infected mods you are safe, follow the instructions in the github to check your machine - because this IS serious and everyone needs to take it seriously.

(and it's a good reminder for folks that minecraft mods are basically arbitrary executable files - treat them like that! if you wouldn't trust a .exe from where you got it, don't trust a .jar, and be aware that you'll always probably be inherently opening yourself to a LITTLE risk by playing modded! not normally this, this is thankfully an unusual situation, but like, you know how it is. also a good reminder that antivirus cannot detect viruses it doesn't know exists, because windows defender is starting to recognize this as a virus now, but that's because security researchers now know it exists. it couldn't recognize it before yesterday despite it existing for weeks, because it didn't know what it was!)

however also the github from the maleware researchers includes the line "we have reason to believe the author of this malware is not a very good programmer in the first place" and reading the full technical timeline. lol. lmao. lol. incredible how many virulent worms and viruses are less works of genius as much as works of sheer opportunity.

(anyway curseforge has finished scanning all the mods in its repository, you can see their tweet about this here. curseforge, at least, is probably safe, although i'd recommend you don't play until you've checked your machine to make sure you don't have any infected files anywhere; even your vanilla minecraft could be infected if you played an infected file at some point!)

PSA! THERE IS MALWARE ON YAYTEXT!

I'm not fully sure just how relevant this will be, but if anyone else uses yaytext to fancify their text with unicode, please be aware that there is now malware on the yaytext website ( yaytext.com ). it has been on there for at least a week now, so if you have gone onto the site, you might have been infected!

WHAT NOW? IF YOU HAVE VISITED YAYTEXT:

first, run a malware scan on your computer. you can do this for FREE with malwarebytes, bitdefender, or kaspersky*. you can find the free versions of these antivirus softwares on their respective websites, and I will link them below for convenience.

after you run the malware scan (hopefully you are not infected!), add the respective browser guard to your browser. as you can see by my screenshot, I use Malwarebytes' broswer guard. if you decide to use their browser guard too, you will still be able to safely use yaytext.

WHERE ELSE DO I GO?

you should assume that yaytext IS NOT safe to use for the time being! there are plenty of other unicode generators out there, however, so you don't have any disruption with your aesthetics.
