Hi!! I want to know what kind of moth is, I found it on the floor hurt but I tried to move it to another safe place, but at the end died. I'm from Mexico, Jalisco so I'm not sure what kind of moth is because I think it's really pretty 💖

Hello! RIP to this friend. So it goes. They are a tiger moth in the genus Apantesis, probably a Mexican tiger moth, Apantesis proxima.

Apantesis phalerata (Harnessed Tiger Moth)

Can be found in N. America, from Ontario and Quebec to S. Dakota and Florida. This moth can be found from April to September depending on the region.

The larva feed on Trifolium (clover and trefoils), Spartina (cord grasses), Taraxacum (dandelion), and Plantago (plantains). Caterpillar hosts are typically clovers, corn, dandelion, and plantains.

Colorado Potato Beetle (Leptinotarsa decemlineata) Parthenice Tiger Moth (Apantesis parthenice), and Spider Wasp (Priocnemis spp.)! My first wasp so far, I couldn't resist the blue. Slowly working myself up to spiders so I can draw them as they deserve! I have decided that I think Valentino is probably an apantesis virgo, aka "virgin tiger moth" (lol the irony)

It even has the zebra stripes and little hearts 🥹😭❤️

oh boy i love this ask, thank you so much.

here's a confession: up until late adulthood, i had a pretty severe phobia of most bugs. i'm much calmer about them now, but i still get freaked out if something jumps, flies or moves too quick. i actually blame my mom for this (surprise). she has an insane bug phobia and there were incidents as a kid where she freaked out and thus, freaked me out.

anyway, that long preamble aside. if we're including beetles in this discussion, then Photinus pyralis or the common eastern firefly (aka lightning bug) is probably my favorite.

some of my best memories as a kid were catching and releasing lightning bugs. i highly resented the fellow homeschooled kids who lived down the street who ripped their abdomens off and wanted to commit acts of unspeakable violence against their homestead. granted, i was not a perfect kid. but i didn't torture bugs or animals.

From the erebidae family. They have a wingspan of 30-42 mm. They tend to inhabit gardens and open areas. They can be found through most of North America.

I’ll start this blog of with one of my favorite finds, a Parthenice Tiger Moth (Apantesis parthenice). I love the pattern on this moth, it looks almost like a skeleton.
