current events regarding war and imperialism - rania khalek dispatches, she's a lebanese-american journalist based in beirut and interviews a lot of left wing anti-imperialist journalists and scholars and activists, her reporting is consistently excellent and explicitly marxist & materialist, i love her. she works for breakthrough news which is also a good news site for similar reasons

war and imperial history and current events - radio war nerd is a classic. lots of interviews with left wing anti imperialist scholars and activists, series where they cover histories of various conflicts and empires, ongoing coverage of wars and genocides. they did a series on the us civil war that was great. they do talk about the weapons of war, tactics and strategy, etc more than the others on this list do which could be a pro or a con depending on who you are, but it's always interesting.

it’s so strange to me how some radfems on this app will dismiss a feminist strategy as impossible instead of thinking about WHY it’s ineffective for the time being in a specific context. the defeatism and low-effort thinking when it comes to things like separatism and consciousness raising as strategies that aren’t meant to be blanket solutions is concerning. no political strategy is a blanket solution. usually, activist groups have to employ myriads of strategies and implement them at different stages. breaking big goals like liberation into smaller targetable chunks is usually how this stuff succeeds. why are we giving up because the results aren’t immediate?

we have to plan this stuff. we have to analyze the context of our specific socioeconomic environments. then get together with like-minded folk (even if they're not totally aligned with all our beliefs) and figure out how to tackle those barriers one by one (is @djuvlipen always right about everything? lol). smaller barriers leading to bigger barriers. all social progress and regress has stages. you implement different strategies for those transitional periods.

Relics of the New Millennium are again in vogue, and especially on TikTok, where you get the sense that everyone is chasing the fantasy of youth. Except, it’s just that—a fantasy.

Today, TikTok operates as the ideal precursor to AI and what the next digital revolution is ushering in—a blurring of realities, a blotting out. Ownership over “the sense organs of the public,” as Nicholas Carr phrased it, is the endpoint, the very future that companies like Meta and Apple want to build. And so TikTok persuades as the perfect tonic: a world of cyclical multimedia that lets you create, live in, or simply spectate at will. A 60-second harbinger of all that is coming, delivered on demand.

They were dealt a bad hand—several bad hands—and saddled with the failures of those who came before them without a blueprint for a path forward. In February, I received a text from a family member. He'd applied for the SAVE Plan, and we exchanged mutual angst over our financial misfortunes, how so many friends are in the same bind, bonding over the recognition of unnatural loss, of another future we’ll never know.

Last week at the barbershop, I watched as a young man in his early thirties thumbed from video to video, his neck craned into his iPhone, blitzing through TikTok. He sat in the chair for about 40 minutes, and as the barber worked around him, not once did he glance away from his screen, except, to exclaim, “Look! You gotta see this one.”

So when I hear that millennials are usurping Gen Z as TikTok's leading demographic, I'm not shocked. The organs of our digital existence, like the body, are connected, flowing as they should even when complete comprehension evades reasoning. All of it is intertwined. The increasing thirst for mixed reality. Gen Z abandoning the rituals of digital life altogether for a more analog experience. The decline of TikTok as millennials eclipse the platform. The previous world is ending. So is social media as we knew it. And we again want to feel something—even if, and only for a little while, that something is 2004.

Wooo This is a question that has forced me to look my ignorance in the face and confront it! It has been an interesting reflection and I'm a little nervous about responding. 😅

If I have to choose an existing economic system, none of them convince me completely because I don't think they fit perfectly with what I imagine Panem to be. But if I have to describe it, I think it would be a mixed system based on dirigisme but with an extreme policy of economic nationalism (I know it sounds a bit weird, but it's a dystopian society 😅).

My limited knowledge of international economics does not allow me to think of a country similar to Panem. But my experience in political marketing makes me think of something, and it is Disney. My headcanon is that Panem is not run as a country or with the idea of a nation but as groups of conglomerates led by the people with the most monetary (and therefore political) influence and a single CEO (at least in Snow's time). Not only because of the distribution of the types of industry, the way labor is used, and the forms of oppression, but also because of the very specific type of propaganda and how it is presented, especially the political use of the myth of prosperity and false meritocracy.

My opinion about Panem and its system is that, like all economic systems that oppress and exploit the worker, it was destined to fall one way or another (I know, I'm very original hehe 😅). Not only because the rebellion and subsequent revolution were inevitable. Also because their marketing strategy is full of flaws and does not do its job within the districts.

A brand mythology that brought a startup into the heart of the nation’s children

I thought for my first belated post, I’d talk about a story of rebranding from an Indonesian start up where I spent four years as VP of Product and reflect how Go-jek’s branding story touches on the concepts of brand mythology and equity, brand architecture, and even friction.

A bit of context

Go-jek was founded in 2010 and is on-demand “super-app” platform that started as motorcycle ride-hailing but now one of the largest SEA tech giants, providing more than 20+ services extending beyond transportation to logistics, food-delivery, grocery-delivery, digital payments and lending, entertainment, e-commerce, and more.

Brand mythology

Go-jek’s registered company name reads “Aplikasi Karya Anak Bangsa” which translates to “an application that is the work of the nation’s children.” This tagline resonated with many people in Indonesia; the fourth-most populous country in the world which was in the midst of the smartphone revolution and which had yet to produce a “unicorn” (tech company valued over $1Bn). By using this tag line as part of their brand mythology, it allowed the company to become more than its on-demand transport and delivery products. It sought to enter the consumer psyche as something that they can be proud of. Go-jek aspired not just  to be the story of a company but a story of the nation. The emotional implication was that using the services would feel like an act of patriotism.

Brand equity and extensions

The mythology as well as smart use of words, was in-part, one of the reasons why Go-Jek was able to expand from 3 services to 20+ within a span of three years. Subsequent product launches included Go-Car (car ride-hailing, think Uber/Lyft), Go-Food (food delivery), Go-Beauty (on-demand haircuts and beauty services, beauticians would come to you!), Go-Pay (peer-to-peer transactions, digital wallets, and more) and so-forth. Because Go-Jek had so much brand power and recognition, there was a lot of built-up trust and it reduced the hurdle for consumers to try out new services immediately after they were launched, even if it was in a completely new vertical. For example, one may not think that a company you trust to get you from place a to b is one that you might also trust to get you a good haircut or one that you may trust with sending money or taking loans.

I personally find it hard to imagine if Uber or Lyft launched a peer-to-peer transaction or money lending service in the US that their brand equity would carry over and consumers would try out those new services. I think if this happened, this would end up like the failed brand extensions that we discussed in class (e.g. the fate of Bic’s perfume and Levi’s suits).

This brand mythology was not a one-time play but a strategy that we continued to invest in as a company. In 2018, eight years after the company was founded, Go-jek launched a campaign titled #AnakBangsaBisa (translates to: Children of the Nation Can) to celebrate the 73rd independence day of Indonesia. This perspective of brand mythology / equity / extensions adds a new dimension to my previous reflections on our work at Gojek. What I thought was more of a branding strategy for recruiting and “feel-good” emotional aspect with using our services may have also played a significant role in enabling us to extend to so many different services in such a short time and become the “super-app” that it is today.

Final thoughts on friction

In thinking how this squares with the discussions in our last class. In a country where life is chaotic (ask any Indonesian or person who has been to Jakarta, the capital city, and chaotic will be an adjective that is certain to come up), daily life is fraught with friction. In that sense, I do believe that the overall mission to remove friction was aspirational and is still relevant.

However, when thinking of the work I did day-to-day as a product manager considering today’s era of surveillance capitalism, and given the lessons learned in our last class, I am becoming increasingly more cognizant that removing friction in the design of products and applications should not be done at the expense of the user’s agency and should not exploit their resources including their data, time, and money.
