The High Water Marks- "The Works" single (Meritorio)

I don't think I could find Grøa, Norway on a map, but that's ok…The High Water Marks could hail from anywhere and I'd be a fan.

They have a new album coming out the week after next (on 5/16/25) and this is the single from it. "The Works" has…the works. In addition to the guitar, bass/drums from the band (Per Ole Bratset, Hilarie Sidney, Logan Miller, and Øystein Megård) you'll hear oozing keyboards, clappy handclaps, and more.

The song is just a little over two minutes long, but doesn't need any more than that to burrow into your skull. As I've said previously, this band has been on a creative roll for a few years now and don't seem to be slowing down at all (good, don't).

Lame-O Records (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) has been turning out some great pop records. From Mo Troper to Slaughter Beach, Dog to Hurry, the label has consistently kept a steady finger on the pulse of indie pop.

Now comes Slippers "So You Like Slippers?". The band serves as the vehicle for the music of Madeline BB. The Bandcamp page throws out a lot of different touchstones - Elephant 6 and Apples in Stereo played a big role in Madeline's upbringing. It describes opener "XTC1000" as a combo of Goner and Sarah Records.

I personally think of Mo Troper's music most when I listen to this, but far be it from me to judge someone's list of band/label comps. Slippers are currently based in Los Angeles, California.

Today (November 18, 2023) marks the 25th anniversary of Cartoon Network's "The Powerpuff Girls"!

To celebrate this occasion, I thought it was right to acknowledge something special that happened to celebrate the show's 20th anniversary.

On November 16, 2018, Fridays celebrated the occasion by having the trio host the show (in the hopes that no crime happened while they were out of Townsville).

Meanwhile, Tommy and Tara are in Paris, interviewing the cast of "Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald".

Q: Why was the celebration called a "kickoff"?

A: This Fridays show kicked of what we named the "Powerpuff Girls 20th Birthday Weekend Marathon", since the actual anniversary wasn't until Sunday.

Q: What did you air this week?

A: We were told by the higher ups not to change the lineup. I think they wanted us to save the PPG episodes for the marathon on Saturday and Sunday.

Q: Well, then what did you change?

A: Obviously, I mentioned a few things already (interviewing, the PPG hosting, etc.), but the set was also decorated.

Q: Did you ever talk about how terrible the reboot is?

A: Nah, we thought it was best to simply not acknowledge the reboot at all.

I got a new music video for you guys! But this one's a little different this time around. I recently took a trip down memory lane and watched all of the old "Groovies" segments that used to air on Cartoon Network, and upon listening to the Apples in Stereo "Signal in the Sky" video, I started looking up what other songs they recorded.  Turns out I was sitting on a hidden gem of a band that deserves more attention. So I decided to take one of their other songs and make a video out of it in the style of the "Groovies" segments that I loved so much back in the day. So sit back and watch some classic cartoons bop along to the Apples in Stereo's "Dance Floor".
