What is Aramid
The name Aramid comes from “aromatic polyamide.” Aramids are defined by the Federal Trade Commission as “A manufactured fiber in which the fiber-forming substance is a long-chain synthetic polyamide in which at least 85% of the amide linkages are attached directly between two aromatic rings.”

Aramids are produced by spinning solid fibers from a liquid chemical into high-performance fibers for use in many applications, including spinning into yarn used to make protective fabrics and garments – for arc-flash protection, flash fire protection, military, firefighting, auto racing, and more. Aramid fibers also have many other uses including aerospace, the automotive industry (brake linings, tires), industrial applications (hoses and belts), and building materials.
There are two primary types of aramids, defined by their molecular composition: Meta-aramids are most commonly used in textiles like protective clothing. One of the best-known aramids is Nomex by DuPont. This inherently flame resistant fabric can be used for arc flash and/or flash fire protection.
Para-aramids are even stronger and are more typically used in applications requiring extreme tensile strength. Best-known para-aramids include Kevlar® by DuPont (other brands include Twaron or Technora by Teijin). Kevlar® is perhaps best-known for its use in bullet-proof vests.
Applications Kevlar’s original use was for car tire reinforcement, where the technology still dominates, but in transport, the fibers are used as a replacement for asbestos – for example in brake linings. Probably the most widely known application is in body armor, but other protective uses include fireproof suits for firefighters, helmets, and gloves.
Their high strength/weight ratio makes them attractive for use as reinforcing (for example in composite materials particularly where flexing tolerance is important, such as aircraft wings). In construction, we have fiber-reinforced concrete and thermoplastic pipes. Corrosion is a major problem for expensive undersea pipelines in the oil industry, and thermoplastic pipe technology was developed to prolong pipeline life and reduce maintenance costs.
