موضوع نه بر سر یک بیمار روانی ست و نه ارتباط با محارم بلکه موضوع سر یک سوال پیچیده است که اول اول باید با تمام وجود تجربه شود

هر چند که میتواند تمام این انگ ها و انگ های دیگر فقط الهامی باشد برای ساخت یک فیلم عالی و متفاوت و نامعمول که میتوان در یک کلام به آن گفت

بله به تفسیر و تعبیر اِگزاتیکا خوش آمدید

کارگردان در این راه باید بیننده را هم گرفتار قضاوت کند پس فیلم را به همان صورتی نشان میدهد که دیگران توان دیدن زندگی ها را دارند

ما نه تنها زندگی دیگران را خطی و روان و ساده نمیبینم بلکه از همه ی آن زندگی نیز باخبر نیستیم

همین امر باعث میشود در اکثر موارد قضاوت هایمان ناعادلانه باشد

.

بیشتر کارگردنها فقط برای پیچاندن فیلمشان هست که دست به این مدلِ روایتگویی میزنند

در دقیقه های ابتدایی فیلم ما متوجه شیشه ای میشویم که "شبیه" آینه است اما در درون(پشت) آن ، آنچه میگذرد با روی‌ش متفاوت است

این هشدار بعدها با دیالوگ شیر و خامه و واژه "بیبی گراند" بهتر فهمانده میشود

آدم ها در گذر زمان اتفاق ها و حادثه هایی را تجربه میکنند که آنها را به نقطه ای میکشاند یا میرساند که هستند

بدینسان هر آدمی راز هایی پشت آنچه در روی‌ش میبینیم دارد که میتواند در بعضی مواقع یک اگزاتیکا باشد

راز های اگزاتیکا یی برای اکثر آدمهای قضاوت کننده غیرقابل درک و حتی در بیشتر مواقع برای قضاوت شونده سرزنش و توبیخ را در پی دارد

توماس

او خودش را "شبیه" یک مغازه دار فروش حیوانات مجاز کرده است

اما او در پشت این چهره موجه به قاچاق گونه های اگزاتیکای حیات وحش مشغول است

در خانه نیز یک دستگاه جوجه کشی (شبیه ساز مادر) مخفی کرده است

اما این همه ی راز پس پرده توماس نیست

او یک راز اگزاتیکایی در درون خود دارد و آن "همجنسگرایی" اوست

توماس برای آنکه بتواند آهنگ عشق‌ش را کامل بنوازد به یک شبیه ساز زوج نیاز دارد

او به بهانه تماشای رقص باله پول بلیت مردانی علاقه مند به رقص‌باله را میپردازد تا دقیقه هایی در کنار آنها بنشیند به آن امید که گفتم

او پس از آشنایی با فرانسیس و برای کمک به او برخلاف میلش از این فضای رقص‌باله‌ای وارد آن فضای رقص کلاپی میشود

از بخت خوب توماس هم فرانسیس با نادیده گرفتن

ـ[ فرانسیس: خب میتونی تظاهر کنی اون چمدون(اشاره کارگردان به بازرسی اول فیلم) وجود نداره ]ـ

و هم مامور پلیس با گرفتن یه چیز خیلی خاص(تخم پرنده) از توماس

او را در شبیه سازی خودش برای فروشنده مجاز حیوانات بودن یاری میدهند

زوئی و کلاپ رقص شبانه‌اش

او که صاحبی این کلاپ را از مادرش به ارث برده میخواهد خود را هر چه بیشتر "شبیه" مادرش کند اما به روش خودش

زوئی برای رسیدن به این هدف فرای کلاه گیس و لباس مادرش ، باید مادر بودن را شبیه سازی کند

اما او همچون دستگاه جوجه کشی این شبیه سازی را انجام میدهد

.

در دنیای ما چه بسیار پدر و مادرانی هستند که فقط از پدر و مادر بودن گزینه‌ی فرزندآوری را اجرا کرده اند

و عکس آن چه کسانی که "شبیه ساز" فوق العاده خوبی از پدر و مادر بودند اما در بسته شدن نطفه ی آن جنین هیچ دخالتی نداشتن

.

کریستینا در خانه‌اش همچین حفره ای در دل دارد و برای پر کردن آن فرانسیس را شبیه سازی کرده است

همیشه شبیه سازی بخاطر حفره یا نبود ایده‌ال یا احتیاج به مکمل نیست گاه یک "تجربه خوش رویایی" باعث آن میشود که انسان آن خاطره را تا آخر عمر در ذهن بکشد و همواره درصدد شبیه سازی آن در زندگی‌اش باشد

کریسینا که از رفتار اریک دلشکسته است زوئی را بجای اریک انتخاب کرده

این همان فرق "جایگزین" کردن با "شبیه سازی" کردن است

در جایگزین کردن ما پدیده ای را با همان ساختار کلیش به جای پدیده مطلوب نداشته‌مان جا میزنیم یا با آن تعویض میکنیم

در تعویض و جایگزین کردن خراش تحمیل دیده میشود(حتی اگر بهتر باشد)ـ

اما در شبیه سازی هدف برابر سازی با اصل است تا آنجا که فرق ناممکن میشود اوج تکامل این رخداد هنگامیست که

فاعل "شبیه ساز" ، بشود مفعول شبیه سازی شده(هر کدام مکمل دیگری)ـ

رابطه کریستینا و فرانسیس چنین است یک رابطه دوطرفه

اما رابطه فرانسیس و تـِرسی شبیه تـِرسی و پیانوی خودنواز است

دیالوگ شیر و خامه در قهوه میان فرانسیس و توماس یادتون هست

وقتی ظاهر شبیه با رونمایی از باطن بسیار ناشبیه دیگر نمیتواند ما را متقاعد به ادامه شبیه سازی کند زمان پایان است

چه کسی حاضر است جلوی آینه‌ای باشد که به پشت آن ظنین است

او که برای وسوسه کردن مشتری ها در این کلاپ از زوئی(خدای کلاپ) پول میگیرد

مشخص است این شغل را "جایگزین" شغلی کرده که به عللی نمیتواند در آن کار کند

اریک شبیه سازی شده یک پدر(شوهر) قراردادیست برای بچه(زوئی)

.

اریک پیچیده ترین و پر راز تربن کاراکتر این فیلم است

چنین شخصیت هایی با داشتن چنین رازهای اگزاتیکای درونی مطمعنا بیشترین زخم از قضاوت های ناعادلانه را بر پیکر روحی خود دارند

تا جایی که حتی باید کشته شوند

.

این بازی خیر(زوئی) و شر(اریک) برای کریستینا ها و فرانسیس ها تا جایی پیش میرود که لب خیر بوسیده میشود و از او میخواهد برای لطف هم که شده شر زدایی کند

و چقدر بشر نادان باید باشد که نداند که کارکرد این دنیا نیاز به این دوقطب دارد

.

آنچه ضرر است شر(قطب منفی) نیست خارج شدن از تعادل است در هر چیز و آنچه سود است خیر(قطب مثبت) نیست بلکه نزدیک شدن به تعادل است در هر چیز

البته هر چیز ، تعادل خاص خودش را دارد به نسبت فعل و فاعل و مفعول

.

نمیدانم شاید کار اصلی ما فهم آنست

آیا کریستینا و فرانسیس داشتند از تعادل خارج میشدن ؟

آیا اریک همچون آن پلیس ، فرانسیس را با هبوط نجات داد؟

آیا روزی کریستینا متوجه خواهد شد پشت آن قرارداد که پیدا کرده چه چیزی از او مراقبت میکرده ؟ یا فقط قضاوتش بسنده به آنچه روی این شیشه میگذرد محدود میشود ؟

آیا او همچون فرانسیس متوجه این روند رفتن به سوی تعادل میشود که از ذات قطب منفی اریک(حسادت) برخاسته ؟

بشر از بدو تولد احساس آرامش را در شبیه سازی از طرز خوابیدن رحم وار تا پستانک تجربه کرده

این شبیه سازی ها روند پیچیده تر شدن خود را از بازی های کودکانه تا بر پا کردن خدایان طی کرده‌اند

بجرات میتوان گفت هر کس بنا به روحیاتش ، مدلی از آن را در زندگیش همواره به همراه دارد

چه با جان چه بی جان این صَنم ها با ما هستند

گاه میشود با شارژ مادیات شبیه سازیشان کرد مثلا پنج دلار یا یک هدیه ولنتاین یا حلقه طلا یا بالاو بالا تر

اما گاه باید متوسل به معنویات شد امری پیچیده تر و سردرگم تر

هارولد برای تحمل پذیر کردن خودش برای خودش ، شبیه سازی از خودش در ذهن کرده که "متقاعد" شده فرانسیس چیزهایی که ممکن بود اتفاق بیفتد را اتفاق افتاده میداند

از تعادل خارج شدن در امر شبیه سازی یا بدتر از آن شبیه سازی های غیر انسانی میتواند فجایع نابخشودنی به همراه داشته باشد

با توجه به روند داستان میتوان حدس زد که زن فرانسیس و هارولد و قاتل بچه فرانسیس به چنین چاه هولناکی سقوط کرده باشند

For some reason, I've just watched my first film by Hansen-Løve. Eden is low-key, sad, and pleasant, focusing on a protagonist who's fashioned on the director's brother. He's a temporarily successful DJ, who spends a few years in New York, while his music style gets out of fashion. He develops an addiction to cocaine, his best friend kills himself (the best scene shows the latter's friends gathering in a café after the funeral), and he hooks up with a few girlfriends, most of whom don't help him with his growing malaise.

The Edible Woman by Margaret Atwood

my first Atwood! reminded me of The Vegetarian by Han Kang with its theme of appetite linked to interpersonal relationships + unraveling sense of self (in fact this book might've popped on my radar bc of its association with it). I liked how each character had their own quirks + weird shit going on too, made the stakes that much more layered and set a kinda zany world for the plot to unfurl in

Less Than Zero by Bret Easton Ellis

finally acquainted with Mr Ellis... not as graphic as I was expecting it to get but I suppose it's his debut + ultimately a different subject matter/world than American Psycho so Understandable! very sparsely + unfeelingly written which I might've read as lazy had I read it years ago but luckily I'm a dedicated student at the Dennis Cooper Institute of Mundane Morbidity so I can appreciate the detachment as an effective vehicle for plot/development. a little repetitive and predictable after a certain point but I think that was the point of it all. im excited to dive into his later / more thorough works!!

Fan Fiction: A Satire by Tavi Gevinson

not actually a book but a 75 page zine that I devoured in one sitting truly unable to rip my eyes away, so im counting it. rookie mag + tavi were staples for me as a teen and tho I was never a swiftie, she also very much aligns with teenage years in my head + she's also just the perfect subject for this kind of piece so this was incredibly nostalgic... so playful and clever and funny and weird, reminiscent of I Love Dick by Chris Kraus with unreliable + obsessive narrator in autofiction form. RPF is actually very ethical and fun when it's this well-formed methinks

this is only my 4th Egoyan but I'm so amazed at how he portrays desire and obsession and detachment in an equally unsettling and blasé way, images that stay on my mind weeks later. I feel like I consistently see a lot of praise for Arsinée Khanjian's performance in his films (rightfully so!!), but Gabrielle Rose is such a queen of haunting intensity I just can't not stan!!!

Young Soul Rebels (1991) dir. Isaac Julien

really fun sexy cool giallo set in late 70s london. amazing soundtrack and costume / set design, cultural/racial/sexual clashes expertly touched on in both explicit + subtle ways. Julien has such an incredible eye for detail, I wish he'd make more narrative films

Girls Town (1996) dir. Jim McKay

sensitively nuanced and surprisingly (for being directed by a man) realistic portrayal of girlhood with another great soundtrack + costume design moment. just felt incredibly real between the friendship dynamics and adolescent handling of difficult topics - the kind of movie I wish I'd come across a decade ago but am grateful I got to see such a beautiful restoration of it

Hustler White (1996) dir. Rick Castro, Bruce LaBruce

WOOOOOOF tony fuckin ward........... hard for me to focus on much else at the moment but wow this was so sexy and funny like surprisingly slapstick at times?? i mentioned it in my letterboxd review, but literally slapstick stumbling into a BDSM scene... just a the perfect convergence of things I love to see on screen, a perfect fun time!!

my sister and I are buddy reading (2) referenced works in Fan Fiction: A Satire + I've got a handful of potential picks for AAPIHM reads, probably leaning more towards the nonfiction route bc this JCO short story collection has maxed out my capacity for fiction at the moment

BLOGTOBER 10/28/2022: EVIL ED

I've been aware of this movie for about 20 years, and I still know almost nothing about it. For me, it's less like a product I consumed, and more like something I experienced, something from another world that I encountered by chance in my endless cycle of renting fistfuls of movies at a time. If you pitched this to me today, I'd have some trepidation; broad parodies made by and for nerds are often condescending, unfunny, and generally just make me wish I were watching the superior movies they clumsily draw upon instead. However, EVIL ED is genuinely weird, a satire of Sweden's long history of censorship whose film references are more than winking asides; often, they're rendered in 3D with fabulous makeup effects and puppetry that have allowed the movie to stick with me all this time.

I should really just buy that Special Ed-ition from Arrow, which is packed with extras that chronicle the development of EVIL ED from short film to the gloriously odd extended feature that stands before us today. Anders Jacobsson's highly original horror-comedy is said to be Sweden's first slasher film, which rings true as its release coincided with the abatement of film censorship in its home country. While film censorship laws weren't officially done away with until 2011, the last film to be cut in Sweden was 1995's CASINO, after which the practice fell appropriately into the shameful past. The Swedish Statens biografbyrå (Cinemabureau of the state) was the oldest film censorship board in the world at the time of its abolition, having been established in 1911 to apply censorship laws so that films circulating in Sweden "shall not include any material that is offensive to public decency or disrespectful to the authorities or private individuals, nor pictures depicting the commission of murders, robberies or other serious crimes, and exhibitions that are open to children shall not include pictures depicting events or situations that are liable to arouse emotions of terror or horror in the audience or for other reasons be considered unsuitable for children to look at." 1996's EVIL ED does its damnedest to break as many of these rules as possible, while making its subject censorship itself.

Mild-mannered Hollywood editor Edward Tor Swenson (Johan Rudebeck) is in for the shock of his life when his employer, European Distributors, transfers him to their Splatter and Gore Department. His new boss Sam Campbell (Olof Rhodin, who is a bit of a show-stealer) assigns Ed the special task of making the popular LOOSE LIMBS slasher franchise acceptable for international export, which will be no small achievement; little does Ed know that his predecessor plunged into insanity and blew himself up with a grenade, declaring himself "just another chunk of meat lost in brainland!" Campbell lends Ed his private holiday cottage so he can focus on this project, but the isolation in combination with the extreme content of the LOOSE LIMBS films soon gets under his skin, and demonic hallucinations urge him to "adjust" not just the movies, but the sickos who create and consume them.

This is probably the most left field association anyone has ever made with EVIL ED, but what we see of the LOOSE LIMBS series always reminds me of the movie-within-a-movie in Atom Egoyan's art house masterpiece THE ADJUSTER. In that movie, Arsinée Khanjian is an employee of a censorship board who, for reasons that are slowly revealed, makes illicit recordings of the material she reviews. You never see the movies she watches, but the audio track effectively creates the worst possible images in your mind's eye, evoking all manner of inhuman depravity in a disturbingly sarcastic tone. Those sounds always reminded me of the endlessly perverse TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE 2, and later on, of the movies Ed censors in EVIL ED—which is funny, because Chop Top himself, Bill Moseley, voices the killer in LOOSE LIMBS (the character is played on screen by Swedish musician Lars "Vasa" Johansson). What I mean to say is, director Anders Jacobsson's vision of the movie that ruins your mind is pitch-perfect, though interestingly, some of his specific film references are more innocent.

EVIL ED had my full attention from the moment that the unhappy protagonist finds a refugee from Joe Dante's GREMLINS fucking around in his fridge. It looks great, and it's hilarious, and it might be there just because the present film hearts the '80s so hard—it is virtually wallpapered with posters from '80s horror classics, and it refers to that time when there was worldwide hysteria over the potentially harmful effects of home video. But, I like to imagine that the invocation of GREMLINS is sort of a dig at Hollywood releases that were allowed to cross lines that smaller independent movies were punished for. The MPAA's PG-13 rating was invented in part for GREMLINS, which had all-ages appeal despite how scary and splattery it was, and the most impressive image in EVIL ED is a spin on the character of Darkness, played by Tim Curry in Ridley Scott's LEGEND. That big budget Hollywood fantasy may have received a PG rating, but it is unremittingly erotic, full of frightening monsters that would be too much more many youngsters, and who could forget the infernal scene in which Darkness's demonic chef hacks up live prisoners for dinner? Here, Ed's boss transforms into a wonderfully-rendered version of Darkness that commands him to edit not just the LOOSE LIMBS movies, but the corrupt world in which they are so popular. Other images from this film refer to more predictable fare like EVIL DEAD 2 and (I'm pretty sure) THE EXORCIST III, but there is something extra salient about EVIL ED's references to famous gateway horror movies that made their way into video stores more or less unscathed.

If I'm being completely honest, EVIL ED does run out of gas at some point (and, I'd assume, out of money), devolving into scenes of characters chasing each other around in dark buildings as so many movies do. But I'd posit that if a movie offers even a couple of things that you can't forget, then its more anonymous offerings are totally forgivable. Rewatching EVIL ED this time, I didn't remember the duller, more generic bits, but I did remember all of its exciting FX experiments, exuberant performances, and bizarre humor in a lot of detail, and I was so happy to see it all again. This movie may go some way to prove something I rarely feel: that being a fan doesn't have to mean bloating up your movie with predictable easter eggs just for the sake of recognition, and it doesn't have to mean just slavishly repeating "It's just a flesh wound!" or whatever just to reinforce your membership in the cult of your choosing. (EVIL ED is guilty of some of this, but on balance I don't care!) Being a fan can and should push you to greater heights of creativity, and if you do it right, you can convey to your audience the feeling you get from your favorite things. EVIL ED cleverly evokes the special way in which extreme movies can make you feel like you're going crazy, and if you're the kind of fan Anders Jacobsson is, it also reminds you of why you keep chasing that feeling.

Late August, Early September is what you might call a “mood title” as opposed to a “content title.” It's like the ones Yasujiro Ozu gave his films, such as Late Spring (1949) or Early Summer (1951), not so much about the time of the year as about the feelings those seasons or months evoke. Assayas's film is about men and women who have reached that point in middle age at which it seems there's no turning back, no starting a new path in life, but instead they must go on into their later years on the track where they've found themselves. The central character of the film is Gabriel (Mathieu Amalric), a writer/editor who at the start of the film is selling the apartment where he has lived with his girlfriend, Jenny (Jeanne Balibar). They have broken up fairly amicably and Gabriel has now started a relationship with another woman, Anne (Virginie Ledoyen), who is a little more impulsive and unsettled than Jenny. Gabriel is friends with Adrien (François Cluzet), a modestly successful novelist who is fretting about how modest that success has been. Adrien, too, has an ex, Lucie (Arsinée Khanjian), but he has now taken up with a 15-year-old girl, Véra (Mia Hansen-Løve), a relationship he has kept secret from his friends. Adrien is also suffering from an unnamed disease. The film explores the relationships among these characters, who talk and smoke and make love the way people in French films do -- to the point where those of us who aren't French may get a little impatient for the film to get on with a plot. But it's so nicely acted by some very attractive performers that it didn't wear me down, even though when it ended I wondered a little what point it was striving to make.
