The Best Things to Do in Comala

Whether you're looking for a relaxing vacation or you're interested in learning about the culture and arts of Comala, there are some great things to do in the town. In fact, you might even be surprised at what you find! Fortunately, it's easy to get started.

Las Nogueras hacienda

Located on the outskirts of Comala is the Hacienda de Nogueras. This ex-hacienda was built by the Spaniard Juan de Noguera. The family ran a sugar cane mill until 1917. After purchasing the hacienda, the Rangel family began intensive cultivation of lemons. In the 17th century, the hacienda produced cane alcohol.

The hacienda is now the Nogueras Cultural Center. It is housed in old sugar mill facilities. Visitors can wander the cobblestone streets outside the museum. The gift shop and restaurant are open during museum hours. A small donation of 25 pesos is required per person.

During the 1960s, the Rangel family established a school for artisans. They taught carpentry, blown glass, gold leaf, paper (flowers), and other crafts. They also created furniture for the hacienda. This furniture was sold to many Mexican embassies.

Nogueras Hacienda is closed on Mondays. You can visit the hacienda from 10 am to 6 pm, or visit on Sundays from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. There is a gift shop and an English introduction to the museum.

Los Portales de Comala

Located 6 miles northwest of Colima, Comala is a small town with a large history. Its name comes from the Nahuatl word "comalli," meaning "place of clay griddles." Today, the town is surrounded by the imposing Volcan de Fuego and the Nevado de Colima. It is also known for its wrought iron work, furniture builders, and paintings. Its status as a Pueblo Magico was established in 2002.

There are plenty of best things to do in Comala. One of the best is a tour of the city's notable sites. The tour starts at the Plaza de Armas and includes a visit to the Casa de la Cultura Enrique Trujillo. The building features finely detailed paintings and an apothecary's shop. It is followed by a tour of the neoclassical parish of San Miguel Arcangel.

The plaza has a wide portico. There is a statue of Juan Rulfo reading to a bronze boy. The plaza also has a small museum to honor the Mexican writer.

Artisans of Comala

Located in the state of Colima, this small town has managed to keep its white with red roofs intact. It has also re-invented itself as a tourist destination with gourmet restaurants, artisanal shops and family run hostels. There are ten tianguis markets, eight department stores and a flea market. Comala is only six kilometers from Colima and is considered to be a cool place to spend a couple of days.

The town is surrounded by three natural boundaries. The namesake, the town of Comala, is situated within a natural corridor spanning 3 miles. It is also the home of artist Alejandro Rangel Hidalgo. The aforementioned plaza is anchored by a finely detailed painting.

The small town also has an array of landmarks to boast of. Among its many historical attractions are the old cathedral, the old municipal buildings and the Hacienda de Nogueras. The most popular of the many parks is the Parrochia San Miguel.

There are many small independent retail stores and department stores for the locals. The city is in the throes of an extensive redevelopment plan that will see the city's infrastructure upgraded and modernized.

Quinta Comala Hotel & Villas

Located in the city of Comala, Quinta Comala Hotel & Villas offers two-star accommodations in the state of Colima. This property is a 10-minute walk from the city's main square. It is also within a 32-minute drive from Licenciado Miguel de la Madrid airport. It offers free parking and WiFi. Guests can also take advantage of the 24-hour front desk and tour desk.

Aside from offering accommodations, the hotel provides guests with a shared lounge, free bikes, and room service. The hotel also features a garden and a swimming pool. In addition to the free parking, the hotel provides travelers with a grocery delivery service. Those looking to explore the city of Comala can take advantage of the nearby public transportation system. The hotel's tour desk can arrange tours of the city and its local attractions. 5e Spell Components

So. For reasons known only to myself and possibly related to work-week-induced insanity, I decided to plug about 400 or so of the material components for spells in D&D 5e into an excel document, to sort them according to type (Biological, Mineral, Crafted, Elemental, Misc.), Subtype, Spell, School, and Cost. Because I’m apparently in the mood to randomly sort stuff?

The results were sort of interesting, if you’re in the sort of incredibly specific mood I am. A few avenues of analysis:

Component Breakdown by Type/Subtype:

If you want to know what sorts of materials are most commonly used for spells in D&D, for things like where you might buy/find them, etc. What I got with my rather rudimentary and inexpert classification system was as follows:

Biological: 128, of which Animal 63 (inc. Humanoid), Plant 45, Food 6, Incense/Unguents/Oils 14

Mineral: 118, of which Gemstones (inc. Powdered) 38, Metals (inc. Powdered/Filed/Dusts) 26, Rocks (inc. Sand/Dust/Stone) 18, Rare Earths (Phosphorus/Sulfur/Etc) 28, Misc (Niter, Salt, Soot, etc) 8

Crafted: 131, of which Artisanal/Holy (Art/Sculpture/Reliquaries/Etc) 61, Materials (Paper/Cloth/Leather/Etc) 19, Metals/Minerals (Coins/Wires/Beads/Glass/Etc) 27, Weapons 10, Misc (makeup, alcohol, spheres of gum arabic, etc.) 24

The rest are elemental (water, fire, smoke), random/case-specific (an object from the target plane, etc), or ones I didn’t know how to file (eg. sponge)

So, honestly, the two places you’re most likely to buy your spell ingredients are a jeweller (gems, metals, filed/dust metals, wires, glass, etc, probably some of the crafted objects) and your standard apothecary (animal/plant parts, rare earth materials, incense/oils/etc). After that you’re either looking for bog-standard gear (cloth, string, leather, dirt, twigs) or you’ll have to get adventurous (gilded skulls, grave dirt, reliquaries, personalised statuettes and model ziggurats might need specialist sellers and/or some personal application)

Components with Costs by School:

Just out of curiosity, I wanted to see which was the most expensive school of magic in terms of named figures. These are totals of all the mentioned costly components, as if you wanted one casting all the most expensive spells for your school:

Necromancy (37,350gp)

Conjuration (16,665gp)

Transmutation (10,525gp)

Abjuration (7,785gp)

Evocation (4,450gp)

Divination (2,025gp)

Illusion (1,550gp)

Enchantment (50gp)

So Necromancy is the most expensive school (all those resurrection spells), followed by Conjuration (all those summon spells) and Transmutation (more varied). Abjuration, Evocation, Divination and Illusion are sort of in the middle, with Illusion being pretty reasonable aside from really one spell (1500 of that 1550 is Simulacrum), but Enchantment is by far the cheapest school of magic (free, if you’re not counting Acquisitions Incorporated). So. If you’re a cheap bastard, guess you know what to go for?

(Sidenote: Mordenkainen, as a spell maker, somehow manages to have his stuff appear luxurious, with things like ivory portals and polished marble, while actually only have one named cost, for a miniature sword costing 250gp. I can’t decide if this feels incredibly fake or if the man was just had an excellent grasp of luxury on a budget)

Random Specifics That Jumped Out At Me:

There are seven spells that call for fur of some kind, and two of them want bat fur. I don’t know why, but that struck my as hilariously specific (see above regarding work-related-insanity?)

There are three spells that want tentacles, all for eldritch conjurations, and two of them specify pickled tentacles, while Evard’s Black Tentacles wants fresh

There are five spells that want a pinch of dust, and five spells that want dirt, though two are necromancy spells that specifically want grave dirt. There’s apparently a surprising amount of spellcasting you can do just by swiping a finger along a dirty mantlepiece

Diamond and ruby are easily the most popular gemstones for casting, followed by pearl, jade and agate. The spell Astral Projection gets points from me just for asking for a gem I’d never heard of before, Jacinth, which is apparently a type of reddish zircon

In terms of metals, powdered iron and powdered silver are very popular, particularly for Abjuration spells, which makes so much sense considering RL folklore

There are two spells that require copper coins, and both are so folklore/idiom driven. Two coins for the eyes for Gentle Repose, and a penny for your thoughts for Detect Thoughts. I love it

In Conclusion:

When frazzled I get an irrepressible urge to sort things, and you all get to suffer for it?

Current Residence: An overgrown hovel a way’s away from the settlement proper. Were it not for the stone arranged about it, you might have missed the doorway entirely, and even then the masonry has been all but reclaimed by the forest. It seems built into the earth itself, disappearing into the side of the gentle slope leading up and away into the trees... not too unlike a barrow, you realize, with the air around the entrance alive with the presence of the wood. Standing there you suddenly feel a strange tickling at the back of your neck, like a hair or thread dragging lightly across your skin. You look back up. You feel compelled to knock on the door. Relationship Status: Single. Sexual Orientation: Asexual. Occupation: Apothecary. Herbalist. Diviner. Blue Mage. 🔓

☾ Physical Appearance ––– -

Hair + Fur: Straw-colored Thick. Long. Worn loose save for a scattering of braids decorated with thread and bits of bone. The fur on their tail and arms appears crimped like a sheep’s wool and feels much like the same. It’s not unusual for both it be rather unkempt from walks through the wood; they don’t seem to mind the twigs, leaves, and clumps of dirt that cling to them long after they’re home. Eyes: Moss green... although, as you look more closely, the left eye seems lighter than the right. Height: 4 fm 9 im. Distinguishing Marks: White-tipped fingers. Claws that are kept aggressively filed down at all times. Lighter hands than is typical for Nu Mou. Common Accessories: Spools of variously colored threads. Skulls and bones from forest creatures worn on lengths of string. Mushrooms. Lichens. Gold earbands. Earrings fashioned in the style of old church bells that ring with deep, dolorous voices.

☾ Personality & Tidbits ––– -

A strange Nu Mou of indeterminate age beholden to the wood. Though they live apart from others of their kind and people in general, they receive most visitors with a smile and an invitation to share a cup of tea. Quiet and courteous, Canary seems very much the kind of host you would care to have out in the middle of the wild Rat’tika, and yet you cannot help but feel unsettled whenever you stare at them for too long -- as though discovering inconsistencies in a painting that prove it a forgery. Like a smile with too many teeth their presence fills you with the sense of the uncanny, reminding you of a delicious meal that puts you to ill hours later. Something about them seems the conversational equivalent of seeing something always just beyond your field of vision, just at your peripheral, but just as soon as you realize your uneasiness you feel yourself soothed by their comfortable, welcoming manner. After all, it feels this cup has been brewed just for you.

Smoking Habit: Rather often, but you’re certain what whatever it is in that pipe, it certainly isn’t tobacco. The fragrance is as uncomfortably sweet as it is spicy; the aroma makes you sick to your stomach. Drugs: The contents of all these vials and jars is a mystery. Whatever labels they once bore have long since worn away or peeled up, leaving you staring at an array of dull, clouded glass bottles haphazardly wrapped in brittle parchment. Really, anything could be inside them. Alcohol: The Nu Mou occasionally reaches for a flash tucked into the sleeve of their robe and takes a quick drink. You can’t see the liquid, but even from here the smell is pungent, and you swear you see the already crimped fur covering their body curl all the bit more with each swig.

☆ The Rat’tika Greatwood - The Nu Mou rarely strays beyond the border of the forest, and so those living under the boughs or visiting from afar might have the luck of crossing their path. They do not make it easy to find them, but they also do not make an effort to hide. If you’re meant to encounter them you surely will. After all, anything can happen in the wood...

★ Blue Magic - Canary’s Blue Magic shares far more in common with FFXI’s iteration than FFXIV’s, most notably the ever present danger of falling prey to “the beast within” as they assimilate and make use of the essences/souls of creatures. As a result their magic is far more feral and ancient than what has been established in-game, and their combat style + weaponry also differ wildly. They will not give out this knowledge to just anyone who comes by and asks, but they are also not above it... Should someone be willing to prove themselves worthy of the art, Canary might potentially teach them. ❀ Once Blessed - I play Ane as the Warrior of Light who has, at this point, permanently lost her Blessing as of the ending of 4.0. I know Warrior of Light roleplay is not everyone’s cup of tea, and while I will not write it entirely out of her characterization for you, I find it often is not relevant 99% of the time. It isn’t something I tend to go out of my way to bring up (and I do not expect people to know of her, regardless of how this plays out in-game with the MSQ), and I am very content for it to not factor into roleplay at all. However, if you’d like to roleplay your character knowing her through this former part of her life -- be they a Scion, an interested canon NPC, or someone who simply recognizes her -- this connection is open to you! ❀ Herbalism + Gardening + Traditional Medicine - Is your character an herbalist? Genres: I like scenarios that lead to character development! Angst with purpose, fluff, slice of life, and even comedic scenes are all absolutely welcome. So long as we are both enjoying ourselves and getting what we like out of roleplay, that’s what matters most to me. Playstyle: I prefer to roleplay on tumblr and Discord as I’m not very good at in-game roleplay, the exception being if we are meeting up one on one or in a very small group (think five people at the most.) I worry about how slow I am and that I am giving poor responses when it’s a very real-time scenario so. ; v ; If you want to play in-game with me, I ask for your patience! Length: I like to write one paragraph at the absolute least, tending more towards a few to several (or even pages), but I will often do my best to match my partner’s reply length unless encouraged to do otherwise. Damn, I can’t choose. They’re both annoying asf but I have so much respect for both. My mom came from another country and lived in poverty, was abused by different people but is one of the most beautiful, strongest women I know. She made something of herself on her own, and also made sure I always had what I needed. My dad played in the NFL for a few years, something millions of people wish they could do. And when his finances were affected by stock market crashes etc, he persevered and built himself up from the bottom again. He’s always there to listen, always accepts me for who I am.

Ishgardian nobles and courtiers from all houses - It would be nice to establish some friends, rivals, etc. in that particular territory. Though she is rather restricted to her ivory tower, Belle does frequent balls. Maybe your character has noticed the beautiful Haillenarte girl with a constantly full dance card and stunning gowns, or she’s offered a smile or kind word to the help at the parties, even lingering for some polite conversation.

Poets, writers, musicians, publishers, bards, literary enthusiasts - Belle is a lover of all of the arts. Though she has lead a rather sheltered life, her parents have allowed her to frequently go to the ballet, opera, and general theatre to see plays. She’s a bleeding heart romantic and will devour any romantic poetry or novels that come her way. It’s kind of set some unrealistic expectations for actual romance in her life. Real boys aren’t usually like book boys.

Ishgardian bachelors - Juliette de Haillenarte has been hellbent on marrying off her only child to an eligible and wealthy bachelor from a friendly house. Belle couldn’t be less enchanted by this notion. Maybe you’ve heard of the string of suitors chased off by the young lady and your character has a mind to try their hand at charming the uncharmable.

Florists, apothecaries, hired help at the estate - Maybe you’ve a stablehand who has heard the sweet voice of the daughter of Viscount Hallenarte’s floating down from the tower while you work. Maybe you’re a florist she’s placed a large flower order to, or an apothecary she’s snuck letters to to ask questions regarding medicinal herbs and flowers. Even though most of Belle’s interactions would have been with other nobles, I, by no means, want to bar her from common folk! If you have any ideas of how your commoner character knows her, or at least knows of her, I’d love to hear them!

Teachers and nannies - Belle has had an expensive education. If you play a character who may have been a tutor in Ishgard while she was growing up, then they would know she’s a very clever curious, and intelligent girl with a thirst for knowledge.

what I’m looking for ––––

I don’t need a free company as I am already in one! However, I am definitely looking for a fun pool of RP contacts for this character. She can easily jump from comic relief to more serious plots, and I’d love to do both and everything in between. Belle is in need of friends, rivals, confidantes, and new experiences. Help her sneak out, dance with her at a party, be a jealous fellow highborn, a jilted suitor - I’m willing to explore most hooks with Belle.

A sidenote: For comic relief alone, I’d be kind of tickled to have a Gaston from Beauty and the Beast type character hounding Belle.I did draw some character inspiration from that movie (can you tell?) and it’s a trope I think would be a lot of fun to explore. We could take it to dark places if you wanted, too! Like I said, I’m pretty open to ideas and few things are off limits.

In a relationship! Despite Belle’s mother wanting an arranged marriage, she is not a character that is available for romance RP. Apprentice Morgan (The Arcana)

Decided I’d do this questionnaire I saw floating around in order to nail down some more details about my fan apprentice for The Arcana, Morgan. For the record, they’re a grumpy nerd who exists in the same canon as @fairysealmother‘s apprentice Amalthea; Morgan’s on Asra’s route, Amalthea is on Julian’s.

Part 1.) Characterization. Use these questions as a way to flesh out some of your character’s personality, background, likes/dislikes, etc.

Their surname? Reid.

Halloween costume? They’d complain the entire time about dressing up being a hassle and then show up in a pirate costume that they’ve lovingly handmade.

Familiar/animal friend? If they had one, it would be a fox, but at the moment they don’t have one.

Big spoon or little spoon?

Little spoon almost always.

Religious?

Not particularly. They’d describe themselves as spiritual--as in they believe there’s something out there--but not religious per se.

Favorite fruit?

They’re really fond of orange-flavored things.

Idea of a nice date?

Shutting the shop for a day, going on a long walk on the beach and just talking/playing in the waves, shopping for dinner food on the way back, making and eating a nice dinner together, reading together/falling asleep together.

Fall. Morgan loves fall more than almost anything else.

They love rollercoasters but also can only go on the scary ones once and curse the entire time.

I feel like they’d like soccer quite a bit. Wouldn’t be very good at it, though. They’d like Tae Kwon Do or a similar martial art.

Some old beat-up car they got used and very carefully take care of. But they prefer to walk.

How do they treat their significant other when they’re feeling unusually affectionate?

Very clingy out of nowhere, going out of their way to do nice things for them/get them what they like, very flustered when confronted by any of this.

Gotta say they’d like Boku no Hero Academia.

Secondhand stores where they can get used-but-not-too-used jeans, cargo pants, and t-shirts

What were they like growing up?

They were a pretty rowdy kid. Their grandmother, the prior owner of their shop, looked after them, but a lot of the time they were fending for themselves, which contributed to their prickly, abrasive attitude and defensiveness.

What kind of drunk are they at a party?

Affectionate sappy drunk. Anyone who points this out once they’re sober will see full Flustered And Angry Morgan.

Depending on the level of the joke and at whose expense it is, either an eyeroll, a snicker, or righteous outrage.

Non-Alcoholic Spirits for the ‘Sober Curious,’ Tasted and Ranked

Millennials, or those born between the years 1981 and 1996, are reportedly seeking out spirits sans booze. Whether or not this trend is as widespread as media reports might have us believe, there are at least a dozen non-alcoholic spirits brands on the market. Often compared to gin due to their use of botanicals and usefulness in cocktails, non-alcoholic spirits like Seedlip and MeMento are a facet of the “sober-curious” movement that may change consumer drinking habits.

VinePair rounded up as many no-proof booze brands as we could find and tasted them straight, as well as with ginger ale and tonic. None of these pack the heat of gin, but they are flavorful and aromatic in their own right. Here are four of our favorite non-alcoholic spirits on the market so far.

Seedlip Spice 94 (“Aromatic”)

Seedlip’s recipes are inspired by “The Art of Distillation,” a 17th-century text devoted to apothecaries’ distilled herbal remedies (they were also non-alcoholic). The latter currently produces three non-alcoholic spirits, each with its own one-word description that acts as a cue for at-home mixologists and professional bartenders alike: “Aromatic,” “Herbal,” and “Citrus.” All are calorie-, sugar-, sweetenter-, and artificial-flavor-free.

Our tasting panel’s favorite was “Aromatic,” which is made with allspice berries, cardamom, grapefruit peel, lemon peel, oak bark, and cascarilla bark, and immediately evoked “Hot Toddy vibes.” Sweet, spicy chai aromas reminded another taster of fall, as cardamom and baking spices came from the glass. On the palate, this expression is more bitter than acidic, “like a warm, mulled wine,” one taster said.

Herbie Virgin

The only brand on this list that actually makes a “virgin” version of an alcoholic gin, Herbie sent our panel on a journey. Sleepytime chamomile tea and floral aromas lead, deceptively, to a “watery” texture on the palate. “Watery, flower, then a teeny bit sweet,” said one panelist. Another likened its slightly silky finish to soap. Our panel enjoyed it with ginger ale, however, noting that “it feels more like a spirit when mixed.”

Three Spirit

An entrancing outlier of the group, this spirit pours a deep, nearly opaque reddish brown. Aromas include dried fruit, apricot, blueberry, and cold-brew coffee. Flavors are intensely sweet, sour, and bitter all at once, inspiring comparisons from “over-steeped tea” to “health juice.” Neither is far off — Three Spirit, created by bartenders, says its aim was “to find a plant-based alternative that also helped you feel good.” It may just have succeeded.

MeMento

This Italian non-alcoholic “aperitif” is made with four ingredients: rosa, lippia citriodora, rosmarinus officinalis, and helichrysum italicum. It’s perfumy aromas evoke rose petal and chamomile, and its silky, creamy texture gave it a “more spirit-like” mouthfeel. Mixed with ginger ale, it was one of our panelist’s favorite non-alcoholic spirits.

Denver’s Fem Fest ready to celebrate empowerment, self-reliance and diversity with an all-ages audience

All-ages concerts are not impossible to find in Denver, thanks to promoters’ efforts to include as much potential audience in their programming — and ticket sales — as possible.

But they’re not the rule. Furthermore, their name belies the fact that teenagers tend to benefit most from all-ages shows, given that they’re old enough to be mobile and independent, but not old enough to get into concerts where 21-and-up with alcohol sales (which tend to dominate at mid-sized and smaller clubs) halt them at the door.

That’s one of the things Museum of Contemporary Art Denver’s Fem Fest hopes to address. The second annual, all-ages event on May 12 unites women artists, musicians and performers from across the city in a celebration of empowerment, creative self-reliance and diverse, all-ages culture.

Think of it as a less academic, more entertainment-focused complement to MCA’s popular “Feminism & Co.” lecture series, producer Bree Davies said.

“The all-are-welcome aspect is really important to me, and that really means from babies to grandmas,” said Davies, a longtime Denver writer, activist and musician. “But my focus for sure is teenagers, because it’s just such a pivotal age when you’re figuring out who you want to be and what you want to do.”

Davies partnered with local organizations such as Girls Rock Denver, where she has volunteered for about a decade, and the nonprofit Youth on Record to employ stage managers, DJs and other folks at the fest who aren’t yet old enough to get their learner’s permits.

“It makes me so excited to see young people getting an opportunity to not just perform, but to go through this process of learning how to book a show, send an invoice and get paid for their work,” said Davies, who also co-founded Denver’s women-focused Titwrench Festival.

“And that’s something I’m very transparent about,” she continued. “There’s a lot you’re expected to know about the industry as an artist or performer, and people don’t consider you a professional if you don’t. Which is not true.”

Fem Fest will take place in and outside of the museum, with programming that reflects the diverse backgrounds and disciplines of its participants — with an eye toward turning them into future performers.

Admission is $20-$25 for adults, and adult beverages will be on hand, including free beer and tequila for the first 300 people from Ratio Beerworks and Proximus Tequila, respectively. But it’s only $5 for 18 and under, and there will be free soda (from Dram Apothecary and Rocky Mountain Soda Company) and ice cream samples (Frozen Matter) for the first 300 attendees under 21.

The event offers relatively hands-off activities like tarot and astrology readings on the museum’s Lower Downtown rooftop, and tours led by female stand-ups in the galleries. An outdoor Femme Bazaar pop-up market from Museo de las Americas’ Karma Leigh will highlight products, crafts and affordable fine art from women of color across the city.

But there are also hands-on workshops covering everything from building your own miniature synthesizer and learning to feel powerful through make-up (thanks to a trio of Denver drag performers) to “The Personal Is Political,” a crafting workshop with tampons, and the Secret Love Collective’s photo booth.

“The idea is to create something you can perform with, or prepare yourself to look and feel like you want to if you’re getting on stage,” Davies said. “Maybe someone will participate this year, and by next year they’re reading to perform. That’s the bigger-picture process of the festival.”

Starting at 2 p.m., music will provide a constant soundtrack to all events, with Youth on Record’s FEMPowered DJs featuring DJ Snailstar, Jade Severn, Kathleen McDowell and DJ Demogorgon. A Girls Rock Denver showcase, which includes participants of that youth-empowering musical summer camp, will offer songs from 13-year-old Kinzie McCloud, 14-year-old Makenna Rose and 14-year-old LenoRe.

Finally, hip-hop, punk and indie rock will arrive on the main stage with sets from Rarebyrd$, Princess Dewclaw, The Corner Girls and the event’s headliners: the acclaimed, all-female Long Beach, Calif., punk band Red Aunts, who recently reunited for a national tour.

“It means a lot to us that this promoter from Denver (Davies), who grew up listening to us, now has this real job with a real budget, and is bringing us back out for this event,” said Red Aunts guitarist Kerry Davis. “We would always pass through Denver on our northern touring route and we love the city, so we’re really excited to come back.”

As a mother of a 5-year-old girl, Davis appreciates seeing kids in the audience at recent Red Aunts shows — as well as more female stage crews, roadies and promoters at venues. At least a lot more than when her band first formed in 1991, anyway.

“It’s been so much fun running into people we haven’t seen in 20 years, and seeing fans bringing their kids to shows really (highlights) the passage of time,” Davis said. “Events like Fem Fest are so important, because even though they’re for everyone, it’s important for girls and women to stick together, teach each other and learn from teach other. My jaded cynicism has started to fade lately as I’ve gotten more fired up about playing shows again. I’m starting to feel like I did back in the 1990s.”

This bar got famous not serving alcohol (it does now)

Portland, Maine (CNN) — It all came to Johanna Corman after four nights of tossing and turning.

Her husband of nearly 17 years, Steve, had just been laid off from his teaching job of 19 years right during April school break in 2013, and they had two children in high school.

After 19 years of teaching, he asked her what he should do next.

Johanna had been a teacher, but she was also an adventurous spirit, willing to jump at opportunities to run the family apple farm and move to Maine's Cliff Island a couple months after seeing a "for sale" sign at the island's only store and café.

Johanna woke up on that fifth morning and realized the answer to their problems.

"I had this whole vision," she said. "A bar with bartenders, and they're mixing and muddling and shaking. But there's no alcohol. It's seltzer-based, but they're using really good, healthy ingredients.

"I love old fashioned ingredients, like bitters and tonics and shrubs and syrups. I just could see the whole thing in my brain."

A dream based on trust

To know Steve Corman is to know how much he loves and trusts Johanna. Having followed her to Cliff Island ten years ago, where they ran Pearls Seaside Market & Cafe for six years, Steve agreed to give it a shot.

In the course of their marriage, "I've come to totally trust certain aspects of what she's saying, what she's doing," he said. "She's incredibly creative."

"And if we're going do it, we're going to go all in," he said.

Neither had a business plan, but by day's end, they had found a realtor and an empty corner bar with space for a retail space in Portland's hip Old Port neighborhood.

And two days later, Steve went to the bank for a home equity loan based on Steve still having a job -- which he did until June. (They were approved a few weeks later.)

Vena's Fizz House, named after Johanna's temperance-minded great grandmother, was born on July 10, 2013 with just 10 drinks on the menu and cans and bottles of seltzer as the base.

No beer distributor would sell them a carbon dioxide hookup without them also buying soda. Within a couple weeks, they bought the equipment online, watched YouTube videos to learn about the installation, and hooked it up themselves.

Led only by Johanna's vision and their shared work ethic, the Cormans tapped into an untapped demand for grownup, sophisticated non-alcoholic drinks -- both by customers who don't drink alcohol and foodies who want interesting drinks.

Customers told them, "We've never been able to go out to a bar and actually feel like we're having a nice drink too," said Johanna. "We always get seltzer with cranberry or something like that."

Although it appeared to come out of nowhere, Vena's was really an outlet for old-timey cooking and canning recipes Johanna had been tinkering with for years.

She had found mention of apple syrup in an old cookbook while running the family apple farm in nearby Hiram, Maine, and she decided to try to create it from excess apple cider they made on the farm. (Her brother Billy Johnson is now the third generation of the family running Apple Acres Farm, but the family has lived in Maine for 11 generations, since before the American Revolution.)

"Two months later, we bottled it, we corked and waxed the top," Johanna said. "We're at the old Portland public market and within an hour, people were coming to, we're just selling tastes and bottled. Two or three people said, 'Okay, we want to be your distributor. We want to sell this all.' Within an hour!"

That's when she invented her first drink, the cider smash, around 1989. Now a Vena's best seller, it's "equal amounts of cider syrup, fresh lemon juice and bourbon," she said. "It's the easiest cocktail in the world, and tart, sweet, beautiful."

For Vena's booze-free bar, Johanna wanted real ingredients, no artificially flavored anything, whether she made the products in her commercial kitchen or bought them from the few producers making bitters, shrubs (drinking vinegars) and syrups that she liked.

Some of the drinks harkened back to another era.

The first drinks the Cormans developed were reminiscent of old-fashioned soda fountains: the lime rickeys, now in four flavors, and chocolate and cherry phosphates.

They also wanted created their own unique concoctions, like the Love Potion Number 9, made from raspberry gomme (an old-fashioned syrup), rose simple syrup, squeezed lime juice, Bolivar bitters, ghost pepper extract and seltzer.

Ginger Julep was made from muddled fresh mint, ginger puree, ginger syrup, ginger bitters, smoky habanero bitters, ghost pepper and seltzer.

Steve became Vena's head bartender, learning about mixology via YouTube videos, nailing those 10 drinks in his first few months on the job.

Part art and part science, the couple created and discovered ingredients to play with and invented new drinks. If they did well, they got added to the menu.

"One of the first we came up (around Valentine's Day 2014) with was the Lumberjack Love," she said.

They found a pine syrup made from this little company out in Colorado "that we just died over," which they turned into a best-selling piney lemonade.

These days, Steve leads the bartending staff. He works with more than 200 bitters and 30 shrubs to invent new drinks, trains Vena's staff, and leads classes to train bartenders and home enthusiasts of what they call liquid alchemy with bitters.

Johanna focuses on inventing and producing syrups and other products in her tiny commercial kitchen and developing Vena's retail operations. Next to the bar, Vena's sells ingredients for people to make their own drinks at home, including Johanna's own bitters and dry mixes that don't break US airport security liquid rules.

They didn't know if they would make it

It wasn't always a sure thing that they would survive, but after more than a year into the business, a man walked into their store and changed their lives.

He stopped by in November 2014, asking Steve, "What's your best non-alcoholic drink in your non-alcoholic bar?"

Steve made him a Lumberjack Love, which has spruce pine syrup, lemon, spiced tonic, Alpine Herb bitters, wormwood bitters, and Owl & Whale's persimmon bitters.

"After two sips, he's in love with this drink," Steve said. "He says, 'What's going on in my palate?' I said, 'I told you, it's the bitters.' I explained the bitters."

After he left, Johanna and Steve's phones starting buzzing with text messages.

The man was Food Network star Alton Brown, who was in town doing a show at Merrill Auditorium.

His Twitter followers had recommended that he visit Vena's. After enjoying his Lumberjack Love, he had tweeted out his love for the shop.

"He put Vena's Fizz House as one of his top eight tour stops on his national 2014 tour," said Steve. "Thank you, Alton Brown."

Adding booze to the mix

Another big decision was adding alcohol to the menu, but the alcohol infusion wasn't just their idea. It came from their customers, who kept tossing little bottles of liquor in their trash after spiking their drinks.

Steve, who had a rotating list of 40 different mocktail recipes on the menu, knew what to do next.

"The first thing I did was take every mocktail, and I knew, but I wrote down the alcohols that would go great, matched, and what other bitter am I going to add to or take away when I add in alcohol?" said Steve. "All of a sudden, I had already 120 mixed drinks using our non-alcoholic menu."

The Lumberjack Love became the grownup Lumbersexual, which has gin, pine, lemon, spiced tonic, alpine herb and wormwood bitters.

The Blackheart Mocktail turned into the Blackheart Cocktail with Maker's Mark bourbon. It had the same ingredients as its non-boozy cousin with the same proportions -- plus bourbon.

Even the child-friendly (but sophisticated) Fluffy Fizz -- cherry juice, squeezed lemons, squeezed limes, orange shrub, simple syrup, and seltzer, topped with a good dollop of cotton candy -- can get grown up. Vodka turns it into a cocktail, with a few dashes of Vena's Bitter Charles.

"We had such a good following for the non-alcoholic drinks that we were afraid once we added alcohol, we would lose those people," Johanna said.

That didn't happen. "We'd get all kinds of people, usually it was in groups, where it might be two don't drink and five do drink," she said. "They were thrilled."

As teachers, they like to teach customers about all the ingredients they make and use. "Most people that come in don't know anything about bitters or all the tonics and syrups," she said.

"So we want it to be that they're 100% comfortable, not to be intimidated, and we want them to ask us questions. We want them to be able to make drinks at home."

That's why they sell ingredients and freely hand out recipes in person and via their website, including the one below.

Blackheart Mocktail or Cocktail

1.5 ounces blackberry puree

0.5 ounces lime juice

0.5 ounces Vena's honey creme syrup

2 mint leaves

4 dashes SF Bitters Co. Boonekamp bitters

8-12 dashes Dram Apothecary Black bitters

2 ounces seltzer

1.5 ounces bourbon for the alcohol version

Shake with ice in a Boston Shaker. (Mint will be muddled with ice during this process) . Pour all without straining into a smaller version collins glass. Add two ounces of seltzer, stir and garnish with a mint leaf and lime wedge.
