Is this real? Or did they drop powdered sugar on everything? Welcome to Mount Asahidake!

Oh it's real all right. 3-4 feet of powder on top of even more packed snow! Let's make snow angels!

It snows nearly everyday here - you can see the layers on top of this snowed-in shed! Wouldn't want to run that water in this cold - but the power still works!

Despite the cold, the trails are beautiful for showshoeing. And it was cold - our water bottles froze during the hike 😲

So we warmed up with some pork cutlet curry.

Then braved the cold again with some ice...

And some amazing colors...

Before warming right back up with color coordinated pasta at the mall!

And we found a new friend!

The case of the SOS sign in Daisetsuzan National Park
At Hokkaido’s largest national park, Daisetsuzan National Park, Japan, on 24th July 1989, a helicopter dispatched to find 2 missing hikers came across a giant SOS sign measuring 4.8m x 3m. It was made using birch wood and was located 4km away from the peak of Mount Asahidake. The rescuers ended up finding the 2 missing hikers, but the duo told the rescuers that they didn’t make the SOS sign.
A 2nd search was conducted. This time, a skeleton with broken bones and a bag pack were found 10-30m away from the SOS sign. In the bag, there was a tape recorder. You can hear the recording here.
In the recording, a man can be heard dragging out the following words: “SOS, 助けてくれ。崖の上で身動きとれず。ここから吊り上げてくれ。” It translates to, “SOS, help me. I am on the cliff, I can’t move. Please lift me up from here.”
The bag also held a hiker ID belonging to a man named Kenji Iwamura. He went missing about 5 years before in July 1984, according to a report in the Asahi Shimbun on 1st March 1991. DNA analysis eventually determined that the skeleton belonged to a male with type A blood, thereby solidifying the fact that the skeleton belonged to the missing hiker, who also had type A blood.
However, the circumstances that led to his eventual death remain a mystery.

SOS Mystery
On 24 July 1989 , two Tokyo men got lost during mountaineering in Mount Asahi in Daisetsuzan National Park in Japan, The Hokkaido police searched in a helicopter and ended up finding a giant SOS sign the two missing men were safely rescued 2-3 km away from that sign , the Hokkaido police was sure that the SOS sign was build by those two men but those two men did not had any idea about the SOS sign . The SOS sign was made of 19 birch trees, each roughly 5 meters long , upon searching the nearby area the police discovered fragments of human bones with traces of animal bites , they also found some cassette tapes, a tape recorder, a backpack, some amulets, a human skull, a tripod, a pair of men's basketball shoes, two cameras, a notebook, and the driver's license . The driver license belonged to Kenji Iwamura, , a 25-year-old male office worker from Kōnan, Aichi Prefecture who had gone missing on 10 July 1984 after he set out hiking to Asahidake. The human bones found were sent to a medical college and were identified initially as those of a woman aged 20–40 years , when the police decided to play the recordings on the cassette tapes , On one of the recordings, the voice of a young man is heard shouting for 2 minutes and 17 seconds , the rest of the tapes found included music from the anime TV shows. On the other hand, since the human skeleton was initially identified as a female, it was thought by investigators that there were two men and a woman that had gone missing at the park , however there was no record of a missing female on 28 February 1990 that after a reexamination of all the human bones that were found, they now believed that the skeleton was actually male, not female.
Now the question was ,was Kenji alone in the woods ? and if yes then how did he made such huge SOS sign alone ? These questions still remain unanswered , leaving a chilling mystery behind….

北海道東川町について from 旭川市アイヌ記念館(2024年9月7日)「カムイのうた」上映におけるサラシからの情報 (mentioned before)
Information from the leaflet about the showing of 'The songs of Kamuy' at the Asahikawa Ainu Museum (September 7, 2024)
Hadley's comment: I decided to separate this information from the previous set since this information is implemented due to another fund/support from a group.
While the previous was heavily talking about the Ainu aspect of the movie, this will focus on the scenery and the set of where the story takes place.
This is the translation Hadley (this account) has made:
Higashikawa town is situated almost in the middle of Hokkaidou, known for the Mount Daisetsu (Asahidake) (旭岳) the maximum height reaching 2,291m. It has the a population of almost 8600 people, and the area is known for its natural beauty-rich scenery.
The Mount Asahi, in the Ainu language, is called ‘Chup Pet’. It is said that it is called this because the water source is in the East; where the Sun and the Moon rises.
The town’s main source of income is rice farming, wood working, and tourism. Daisetsu National Park is the biggest of parks in Japan, and is known for the alpine plants, autumn leaves, and powder snow, as well as mountain climbing activities.
In 1985, it was declared to be a town for photographing, and the town and has pursued town development by aiming to become a 'photogenic town’, and promoting both domestic and international exchange centred around photography.
The town is also known for its production of furniture, having most of the production of Ashikawa Furniture taking place in this area.
Daisetsu is also known to be the first Japanese Language school to have been established in all of Japan. Higashikawa town welcomes international students, whom many live and study there, and helps with international exchange.
