A small gift for @coldshrugs, featuring Wayfarer Ephyra Metaxas. That you for being you, Azia, and for joining me in being utterly normal about Veyer ;). This was inspired in by this lovely art by @ranyani-arts and by Azia’s writing.
Fandom: Wayfarer IF | Words: 501 | Read on ao3
Veyer Krellion x Ephyra Metaxas | future | romance rating: Teen. Fluff, slice of life, some time in the future, established relationship
Laughter
It was nice for Ashani to offer the Order’s safehouse, as they claim it is. Or maybe nice wasn’t quite right. A sense of guilt might have played in, Veyer supposes. Whatever Ashani’s reason, they can’t complain.
They brush their hand against Ephyra’s as they walk through the modest garden. The place is tucked away in Ithyria, and the tiny garden is private, as is the house itself. They have no idea how long Ashani has been the owner, perhaps centuries. Long enough that the house isn’t associated with Lethalis or perhaps even The Guild of Mages. Very convenient, and Veyer suspects the house is simply one of many Ashani has access to.
Ephyra stops, admiring the large orchids growing in pots on the wall. They’re stuck there with magic, but they don’t bother warning her. If they fall, they fall. They’re still a little curious about how her abilities works, but mostly it doesn’t matter. It matters that when she touch them, the burning inside of them ceases.
Ephyra touches the soft petal of the delicate flowers.
“Pretty.”
“Yes.”
They walk on, circling the small pond, the water feature somewhat predictably taking up most of the outdoor space. Every time her hand brushes theirs it’s like drawing a fresh breath of air. They give in to it, and grasps her hand. She lets them, with a small smile and something akin to triumph in her eyes. They flick their thumb across Ephyra’s hand in slow deliberate motions.
The garden isn’t big, and soon they’ve circled the pond and admired the rest of the exotic flowers.
“Let’s explore the inside?”
“Of course, Ephyra dear.”
They had decided to walk the garden first, each of them slipping inside the hidden door – hidden to them at least, possibly not to Ephyra – using Ashani’s passphrase.
The house isn’t big; a sitting room connected to the garden, a kitchen and dining room, and a stair leading upstairs. Ephyra lets go of them and throws herself on a divan in the sitting room.
Veyer sits on the other end, and Ephyra throws her legs across their lap.
“Tell me a story. Something funny, or embarrassing from court.”
“Do you think the nobility has a habit of making fools of themselves for your entertainment, my dear?”
They slide their hands up her legs and her pants are heavy, offering no reprieve, no contact with her skin. Their banter isn’t new, but this is – the delay of gratification, spending time together before the inevitable crash together in bed. Or if they’re lucky, on this divan. They can wait.
“Perhaps not for me, but for you. Or are you telling me truly nothing ever happens?”
They know the well muscled legs underneath her clothes; they know every scar on them. Veyer tries not to think too much of what that means.
“Barely,” but they grin and launch into a story, only embellishing slightly. Ephyra’s laughter is worth it, and they try not to think too much of that either.

Blood Rites Now Available on Patreon ✨
Thirty years before the events of Wayfarer, Veyer Krellion arrives in Erenvor to execute a mission for the Order of Lethalis. But the Imperial capital is far more dangerous than they expected, and fate may have a different destiny in mind for them…
Veyer Krellion is not one to be nervous. They have lived most of their life in pursuit of one thrill or another. Some (their parents, for instance) would call them reckless—recklessly disregarding their own safety and irresponsibly endangering their family name and legacy. To a certain degree, Veyer agrees with the assessment. It is in their nature to push back against restrictions, social or otherwise, simply because they exist. The trait has served them well in some instances and failed them utterly in others. Considering where they are headed now, they will have to reign in their quick-tempered impulses. What their family found vexing and the Farans called endearing and the Guild branded tolerable… the Imperial court will no doubt consider undesirable. You must mind your tongue in Erenvor, Veyer. House Nesarian demands nothing less than perfect obedience from its court mages. A single stray word to the wrong person at the wrong time will have circumstances more dire than you can imagine. Ashani’s warning echoes in their mind, clear as the day they spoke those words. I ask this favour of you because there is no one else I trust. The Axe of Athor is in the possession of the Imperial court. It must be observed, any changes recorded. You are Arathian, from a respected family. Of those of us who remain, you are best positioned to join the court and execute this subterfuge. That is the skill you are most proud of, no?
Short stories are posted monthly and are exclusive to the Wayfarer tier and up.

Too Small To Be Afraid (Chapter 2)

- - - - - - - - - -
My lungs cry out for more air than I can give them with each step of my quickening pace. I clutch the strap on my overnight bag to keep it from falling off my shoulder.
"3:57," Dad says, glancing at his watch as we run through the undercity railway entrance. "We can make it!"
"What?!" I holler to him, nearly losing my footing as we move up the stairs. "We're not going to make it, are you crazy?!"
We dart across the station, weaving through crowds and passing numerous trains. I lose count of how many times I've had to say 'excuse me' after bumping into so many people along the way.
"Don't tell me you've already given up hope!" Dad's gaze shifts upward. "Now, which platform was it again?"
"It's platform 16B, and I gave up hope when the movers arrived while we were still packing! We're lucky they were willing to wait the extra fifteen minutes for us to finish!"
"There it is, platform 16B! And with one minute to spare! Hah!" Dad laughs triumphantly and glances down at his watch. "Uh-oh."
"No uh-ohs!" I sprint through the crowd to catch up with him and look down at his watch. "4:02?!"
Dad and I turn our gazes to platform 16B and behold its trainless track.
"Well... I guess we can wait for the next one," Dad says, scratching his chin.
"That's three hours away," I say, pressing my fingers to my temple.
"How do you know that?" Dad starts looking around. "Did you see it somewhere?"
"I looked it up earlier in case... well, this happened again."
"Again? What do you mean?"
"Well, for starters," I say, folding my arms. "When we visited Grandma two years ago? We missed the train and made her wait up late for us."
Dad shrugs. "Okay, but that was just one time."
"Alright, then what about the time we went to North Eris to visit Uncle Lewis?"
"That was ages ago! You were only twelve!"
"Okay, what about when we wanted to take a day trip to Ashani last year? Or when we nearly missed the train home from the university this morning?"
Dad raises his hands in defeat. "Okay, okay," he says. "So I'm not that great at catching trains."
A voice overhead interrupts our conversation, "The four o'clock train from Maedri to Chancelor is now approaching platform 16B. We apologize for the delay."
Dad turns to me with a big grin and finger guns ablazing. "Made it just in time!"
I roll my eyes and smile. I guess he wins this round.
Shortly after boarding the train and sitting in the old, worn leather seats, we begin to move away from the only city I've ever called home. I set down the bag I was holding onto so tightly and rub my legs in an attempt to relieve myself of goosebumps.
"Hey," Dad says, pointing upward. "This train has a series of real skylights along the track. Maybe you can get some good nature pictures."
I look up and see a window. Through the window is the dull, lifeless sea of gray that is the ceiling to the undercity. It stares back at me, almost taunting me as it selfishly conceals the beauty of the world hidden above the surface. I pull out my phone, my heart racing at the opportunity to see the nature scenes the skylights have to offer. I've grown tired of the same old videos that play on the artificial skylights in town and have been longing for something real. I sit and wait in restless anticipation for the skylights to appear.
All at once, the melancholy of the undercity is stripped away as I'm nearly blinded by a bright blue sky. Fallen blossoms adorn the glass above, in beautiful shades of pastel pink and white. Big, wide, sturdy trees reach high up into the heavens with no end in sight. The sight leaves me in such awe that I forget to take any pictures.
And then I see two pertheans tower over the glass.
Everything stops. I let out a gasp, my phone slipping through my fingers and onto the train floor. My insides flip completely upside-down, and my entire being trembles as I turn my widened eyes to the ground.
Something touches my left shoulder, causing me to flinch. I turn and see Dad's hand resting there.
"Breathe," Dad whispers. "It's okay."
I take in a shuddery breath and hold it in for a few seconds before letting it go. Shaking, I lean over and pick up my phone from the train floor. That's enough surface world for one day.

On The Gods
In this world, there are two pantheons. Separated mainly by their method of Ascension to godhood.
First, there are the primordial gods. These are the ones who simply came to be. Eldest among these is Chaos, the only lone one in a Pantheon of balanced opposites. Next, came Life and after her, Death. Then, with the appearance of sentient beings there was Passion and Logic, however, in their development they leaned fully into their elemental aspects, and so they are known as the gods of Fire and Ice. In the absence of more human representation, mortals cried out to the Universe and begged for gods of their own to set them apart. And the Universe answered. And thus was born the God of Justice and the Goddess of Mercy. So stands the full primordial Pantheon headed by their youngest members Justice and Mercy, for they were most suited to rule.
Then there are the ascended gods. They are a bit more complicated. For, you see, they were once mortals and as such they needed to prove themselves before gaining godhood. Their aspect is determined by their actions and personality during a mortal life, as well as what the Universe thinks would work best. (Heh, universe is a stand in for me the author)
Often, and ascended God is made during times of turmoil when people run out of gods to pray to and turn to the universe itself, which is known for being fickle and impossible to comprehend.
A few of the ascended gods include, Serara: the Lady of Storm and the Hand of Justice, Enrin: the Lord of tactics and first of the war triad, Manisita: Lady of knowledge of things that are and things that were, Keyon: Lord of Prophecy and knower of things that may yet be. Ashani: Lady of Journeys and of Merchants. And many many more of which I can fill a full book of them in their backstories.
However, there's a lot of neat things that I have about many of the pantheon members. They will each get their own post going deeper into the lore.
Also, on a plot note, the ascended gods are the ones tied to the Serif, and can only access the mortal realm while a Serif still reigns. Primordial gods can and do reach the mortal realm when there is no Serif. (This is very important to keep this in mind.)
