Sooooo after meeting Matej and dying a little over how gone Flynn is after five seconds and how much game Matej clearly has I have a mighty mighty need to know more about their relationship. Headcanons? Pretty please?

Ahaha. I have many.

Matej was from a formerly noble family in Dalmatia that claimed to be descended from John Hunyadi (Matija Korvin’s father) and that is in fact the reason he has the name. They were now poor and didn’t have much money (the usual aristocratic family that had land but no cash) hence why Matej left and joined the Prussian Army. This is also because he was gay and not interested in getting married to a woman, so the army was a convenient way to avoid any pressure to do that.

As was probably clear, Matej was very competent, smart, and tended to see through most kinds of BS immediately, which was a good skill to have when dealing with Flynn. He had a low nonsense tolerance and could be hot-tempered, reckless, and willing to take too many risks at points, though that usually meant endangering his own life rather than his men, who all respected him. In some ways, his courage, personality and fighting ability reminded Flynn of Richard, because Matej definitely had that same sort of brusquely witty soldier sense of humor, although it usually took everyone by surprise when he let it show. He was mostly serious in temperament and could come across as formidable and frightening to people who didn’t know him, and he liked to be in charge (both in the battlefield and other places). He was a very good rider, swordsman, and rifle shot, and won various awards and medals from King Frederick for his regiment. In other words, he was Damn Good at what he did, and he knew it. He also believed strongly in justice and fairness and other things that were not always part of an eighteenth-century army captain’s repertoire, and as noted with Maria Theresa, would break the rules if he thought they were going to lead to a bad outcome or something he could avoid.

Flynn, naturally, pined over Matej for months before an exasperated Gabriel made him go talk to him, and also agonized about telling him that they were vampires, only to have an actual conversation with him and discover that, duh, Matej already knew both these things and had for a while. He also had an eye for Flynn, but was being careful about saying so, for obvious reasons. They fell into a relationship fairly quickly after they discovered they felt the same way, and Flynn had fewer hangups back then (he was just bad at it).

Most of their relationship was spent in war together, so they didn’t really have much time or space or life outside that. But they found small moments to sneak away and talk and be alone. Matej found Flynn fascinating because he was born in the same place, but 1100 years ago, and Flynn found Matej fascinating because he finally provided that connection and sense of belonging to his human homeland that he hadn’t had for centuries. They could talk in Croatian together, and Matej could tell him the songs and stories and folk tales and history that he had learned growing up, and Flynn could tell him about the history and all the medieval battles that he had personally fought him. They, as noted, had to be careful about it, but they also had a very healthy sex life (yes, Flynn actually used to get laid on the regular. We are all shocked). Matej was definitely the top in that, for the most part, but they tried everything. Matej was tough and fearless and assertive (also useful traits when dealing with Flynn) and was never ashamed of who he was or what he wanted. That was never a struggle or a question between them, although other things were.

They could fight a lot, and both of them were very stubborn and refused to back down or compromise if they considered they were right. But they also were genuinely, passionately, deeply in love and very good for each other, and took care of each other and Flynn definitely did several stupid things trying to protect Matej in battle, while Matej insisted that he didn’t need it. They were excited about the end of the war because it meant they could finally get a chance at a permanent future, and Matej had agreed in principle to the idea of becoming a vampire and having Cecilia turn him. But he was also unflinching in his loyalties and had just spent seven years fighting for Prussia in the war and when he discovered that Christian was a French agent, he felt as if he had to stop it (and he also had never met Christian and didn’t realize that he meant so much to Gabriel and Garcia until it was too late). He definitely did not intend to have the vampire hunters kill Christian, just scare him and make him not say anything, but that backfired. Then when that all went to hell and the hunters showed up to kill the de Clermonts at Sept-Tours, Matej jumped in front of a silver bullet to save Flynn (as Gabriel tells Lucy). He was mortally wounded, Flynn tried to turn him, but did it wrong and he became a mindless monster.

Gabriel was the one who had to kill Matej as an act of mercy and to save everyone from him, after already losing Christian. Once Matej was dead, Gabriel and Flynn had the almighty fight that both of them still have scars from, that Asher and Maria had to break up otherwise they would have killed each other. That was the moment that their relationship was destroyed and has never recovered, and Asher took Gabriel and Maria took Flynn and they had to keep them apart for several years. As Maria says, Flynn is in a very real way still very much in love with Matej, and they are basically Tragic up and down and loved each other and fought for each other and wanted a life together, and instead it ended up blowing absolutely everything to hell and the family has never recovered. Flynn was so excited about introducing him to everyone, and had absolutely no way to see coming what then happened. So yes.
