I've had the idea for this fic since at least 2018.  Here is the Dryden and Folken buddy story that grew from a one-shot to a trilogy. Such fun to write though. Dryden is one of my favorite characters because he is such a cool cat and a refreshing contrast against the brash and serious major male characters. He is always fun to write and I think he and Folken would get along swimmingly so it was great to write a scene for them to just hang out and discover what they have in common. This is my favorite piece for this week. I finally get to indulge in my ships and it is glorious.

as of last week, i am now divorced and living happier than ever. i do a lot of reading and baking. i still think about my time on the track and all the wonderful people i met.

TIME SKIP TO ABU DHABI 2022

you weren’t sure if you made the right decision, yet here you were in the aston martin garage about to watch sebastian’s last race. the aston martin team made sure photographers weren’t in your face with their cameras, which you thanked them for. yeah, your former job had paparazzi following you almost everywhere but you had gotten used to the quietness.

you hadn’t seen sebastian all day, it was killing you inside. you felt like this was a bad decision, but before you could leave the aston martin garage, you saw sebastian enter with britta by his side. you heard him speaking to her, but he stopped once he spotted you.

britta noticed the look sebastian gave you. it was like seeing two teenagers in love. “i’ll leave you two alone.” she said then left.

sebastian watched as you played with the ring on your finger. it was a habit he noticed in 2010 and somehow you never changed. “we can go in my driver’s room if you’d like. it’s more private.”

“yeah, i’d like that.” you reply. together, you and sebastian walked to his driver’s room.

several people from the aston martin team were secretly rooting for you two, it was clear that they knew about your history. even if they were big fans of you, they didn’t walk up to you to ask for a photo, not when you were with sebastian on the most important night of his life.

you finally made it to his driver’s room. it was small, but it was just perfect for you and sebastian to have a conversation in. you and sebastian sat on the tiny bed. “are you nervous?” you asked.

“more excited actually. it really is nice that you’re here. thank you for coming.” he said.

“i didn’t think you would want me here.”

“why?”

you looked at him. there he was staring at you with his beautiful blue eyes. “i thought you hated me all these years.”

“i could never hate you, y/n. i never stopped loving you even when you told me you were engaged, when i found out you said i do to someone else.” he confessed. “i’ve carried this love for you in my heart for many years. but you were happy.”

“i was happy . . then he broke my heart and i gave him the ring back.” you replied. “i realized I didn’t want that life with him . . . because i want that life with you and i know it all seems so sudden but it’s always been you.”

in that moment, seemed to stand still as he processed the weight of her words. he couldn’t help but feel an overwhelming sense of hope blossom within him—a hope that, against all odds, maybe, just maybe, they could finally be together.

you could feel a tear run down your cheek. “god, i’m sorry. i dumped all this on you before your last race—”

then she felt sebastian’s lips on hers. as their lips met, the world seemed to fall away, leaving only the two of them.

for you, it was a revelation—a confirmation of the love you had always felt but never dared to acknowledge it. for sebastian, it was a homecoming—a return to the one person who had always held his heart captive, even when you belonged to another.

their moment had been interrupted by a knock on the door then by sebastian’s father, norbert vettel, asking if he was ready yet.

“i’ll be out in a second.” sebastian replied. he turned to look at you. “i am considering that a good luck kiss.”

“you don’t need luck, you’re sebastian vettel.” you playfully rolled your eyes.

“well whenever i’m with you, i always feel lucky.”

and with that, you and sebastian exited his driver’s room.

SEB’S LAST RACE

you were feeling lots of emotions. you watched as sebastian finished his post race interview with jenson. you watched from a monitor inside the aston martin garage, you could see the sadness in sebastian’s eyes. you knew the feeling all too well.

“go meet him.” norbert said. “he needs you right now.”

“but—”

“go.” he assured you.

so you walked to the pit lane since sebastian was already making his way back to the garage. once he spotted you, he smiled. you made it clear that now you didn’t care if you were photographed, all you wanted was to be with sebastian.

“i really want to kiss you right now.” sebastian said when he walked up to you. many photographers and journalists were crowded around you, making sure to capture the moment between you two.

“then do it.”

and then, without another word, he pulled her in for a kiss. as his lips met yours, you felt a rush of warmth flood your entire being. as they finally pulled away, your eyes met in a silent understanding. sebastian took your hand and led you to back to the garage where his team was waiting for him.

“i’m so proud of you.” you whispered to him.

“you won’t be saying that when i’m bothering you constantly now that i’ll be around you more.” he joked.

“and i’ll be fine with that.” you reply with a smile.

sebastian turned to face you. he knew it was still early, but he always kept his promises. “one day, i’m going to marry you. i’m going to make you so happy everyday, okay? it’s my only job.”

hearing sebastian’s words filled you with a sense of comfort, joy and reassurance. you suddenly felt more alive and complete than ever before.

“i love you, more deeply than i ever thought possible.” you reply.

and suddenly, everything felt right in the world.

The buzz of anticipation fills the air as the Japanese Grand Prix approaches. In the heart of the Aston Martin garage, excitement crackles like static electricity. You stand by, wearing Lance's green Aston Martin shirt and a pair of dark jeans, feeling a mix of nerves and pride as he prepares for the first training session.

Lance, clad in his racing suit, stands by his car, a vision of determination and focus. His eyes dance with excitement as he watches the mechanics fine-tune every detail of his racing machine. You can't help but admire his passion for racing, radiating from every pore.

Lost in the moment, Lane's gaze drifts, his mind undoubtedly wandering to the countless laps he would soon embark upon. You watch him, captivated by the raw energy he exudes. It's obvious; he is in his element, a true racer at heart.

Breaking the silence, you speak softly, your voice cutting through the hum of activity in the garage. "What are you smiling about?" You ask, your eyes alight with curiosity.

Lance turns to you, his grin widening as he meets your gaze. "I'm just happy to be here," he replies, his voice filled with genuine joy. "To be living my dream, racing in Formula 1, it's everything I've ever wanted."

You feel a surge of warmth wash over you at his words. Knowing how hard Lance worked to reach this point, the countless hours of training, the sacrifices he made along the way, and all the comments he had to endure just for following his passion.

"Lance." You breathe, and you can't help but be drawn to him. With a tender smile, you reach out, placing a gentle hand on his chest, feeling the steady rhythm of his breathing deeply beneath the palm of your hand.

"Hey," you murmur softly, your voice barely above a whisper, "that smile looks good on you."

A blush creeps up Lance's cheeks, his eyes meeting yours with a warmth that sends shivers down your spine. He opens his mouth to reply, but before any words could escape, he finds himself leaning in, drawn to you like a magnet.

Your lips meet in a soft, gentle kiss, a moment suspended in time amidst the chaos of the garage. In that instant, the world falls away, leaving only you two, lost in each other's embrace.

As you pull apart, Lance's smile lingers, a beacon of light in the dimly lit garage. You can't help but return it, your heart swelling with love for the man beside you.

"Let's go, Lance." A mechanic pats his back; it's time for the first training session to begin.

As he gets ready, you can't help but admire him once more: his racing suit hugs his form flawlessly. His hair, tousled just so, gives him an air of effortless charm, reminiscent of a Disney prince brought to life.

With each movement, his suit seems to accentuate his physique, highlighting the scuplted lines of his body in all the right places. You catch a glimpse of the white fireproofs beneath his unzipped suit, a tantalizing hint of what lies beneath.

Lance meets your gaze with a mischievous twinkle in his eye, a playful smirk tugging at the corner of his lips. He knows the effect he has on you, reveling in the tease as he toys with the zipper of his suit.

You can't help but play along, a smile dancing on your lips as he strokes himself subconsciously, his hand running across his chest once, then twice, before gently brushing over his crotch and along his waistline.

As Lance settles into the cockpit of his Aston Martin, the anticipation thrumms through the air like electricity. With a quick adjustment of his helmet and a tightening of his gloves, he is ready. With the roar of the engine, he pulls out onto the track, the familiar rush of adrenaline coursing through his veins.

You watch from the sidelines, your heart racing in tandem with the car as it speeds off into the distance. Slipping on your headphones, tuning into Lance's radio channel, eager to hear his voice as he navigates the twists and turns of the circuit, you stand next to his mechanics as they feel the same.

As the crackle of the radio fills your ears, you can't help but smile. Every word that comes through is laced with excitement and enthusiasm, a testament to Lance's love for the sport. You can picture the grin on his face as he tackles each corner with precision, pushing his car to the limit with every lap.

And then, amidst the static, you hear it—the unmistakable sounds of laughter, bright and infectious. Lance is giggling; the sheer joy of racing evident in every note of his voice. It is a sound that fills you with warmth, knowing that your boyfriend is living out his dreams on track.

As the session draws to a close, Lance's radio falls silent, the final moments of the session ticking away. But you know that his smile will linger long after he steps out of the car.

Lance emerges from the cockpit, and you sense the adrenaline still flowing through him, his body taut with excitement. You watch him with a mixture of pride and admiration, knowing just how much he loves being behind the wheel.

Your hand moves with purpose, gliding over Lance's chest, relishing in the taut muscles beneath the fabric of his racing suit. As you apply a firm stroke, you feel a low growl reverberate through his throat, a primal sound that gives you gossebumps.

Caught off guard by your touch, Lance meets your gaze with a mixture of surprise and desire. "How did I do?" he asks, his voice husky with anticipation.

You smile, your eyes sparkling with joy. "You were phenomenal," you reply, your words filled with genuine pride.

A smirk tugs at the corner of his lips again when you lean in, kissing him gently.

"You really should smile more." Your lips brush over his own. "I'm just so happy for you." As you run your hand through his messy hair, you marvel at the way it frames his face, tousled and wind-swept from the intensity of his time on track. Each strand feels like silk beneath your fingers.

Lance leans into your touch, his eyes fluttering closed as he savors the sensation. With a soft sight, he opens his eyes, meeting your gaze with an affectionate smile.

"I will smile more, just for you, I promise," he murmurs, his voice filled with warmth.

Opposites attract. Or was it birds of a feather?

In your three years as a philanderer, you found neither of those rules to be truer than the other. It was easier to call it what it always is : chemistry. Or chemicals went awry?

The latter seemed more fitting ever since Sana started playing around you. Your appointed rival, for gossiping’s sake. You wondered why she’d suddenly taken interest in you, and got your answer pretty quickly.

She’s crazy.

Loves the eyes on her, the attention. You couldn’t blame her. You understood her—at least to certain extent.

You liked it better when the attention was given behind closed doors. Privately, in hushed whispers, wordless stares as you walked by.

Sana…. She liked to make a show out of it.

Her sweet idea of fire worth playing with was the campus’ must try. At least for the worthy enough in her eyes. For the others it was a must see. As cruel as she could be, her behavior was art. Something about her eyes, her smile; it was a performance.

The way she messed with people them left them clueless, barely aware of themselves, their mind in pieces scattered around their dignity; the only thing she was kind enough to leave them with.

You watched every time a poor soul foolishly lead the way to its despair, hand holding onto its downfall.

You could say they were unkowing, unaware of the damage they laid themselves open to, but it would only be a lie. They were simply human enough to risk it all for a taste of what was popular.

It was captivating.

The way her eyes left her toy, looking back to the crowd she was leaving behind. A gesture as innocent as she could display herself to be, but only for the less aware. The most informed knew, she was looking for you.

Her gaze never wasted time, to the point she knew exactly where to catch yours. No matter the place, all she had to do was look past everyone else’s spellbound faces.

There you were, looking right back at her. The only one conscious enough to appreciate the end of her show.

Her winks stuck on your mind long after she disappeared into the whatever car her date got their hands on in hopes to impress her.

BMWs, rented Mercedes, a sweet Chevy, daddy’s Aston Martin… You chuckled at every single attempt. Not that you had any better, or even the means to get anything close to those.

In all humility, you didn’t mock their efforts either. It was only hard not to laugh at the thought of how easily you could turn all that blood and sweat into tears.

All you had to do was reach for her hand.

Though that ease worked your mind down, weakening it until you couldn’t hide anything in there anymore.

“Why do you make it so easy?” You asked her one night.

You’d helped her leave the mess she’d made of someone hours ago. Habit had her following you into your apartment, borrowing your bathroom before joining her roommate back in the dorms.

Her makeup was halfway off, revealing nothing but an even prettier sight. Her eyes seemed to be softer on you than they were moments ago. “What do you mean?”

“Why do you make it easy for me to steal you away?” You repeated, looking away from her to grab a cushion to hold against your chest.

Your studio apartment was a very small space, one allowing you to reach the bathroom in two steps from the couch you also used as a bed.

Sana loved to leave the door open, inviting you into her late night routine. Whatever had to do with her skin, you somehow knew about it. From the products she used, down to the weak spots; their complicated names and the sounds that rolled off her tongue whenever you let curiosity get the best of you.

“I could ask you the same thing.” She smiled at her own reflection. “But I doubt the answer will please you.”

“Since when do you care to please me?” You scoffed, kicking a stuffed animal at your feet.

Sana’s hands stuttered on her skin before letting silence claim the room. It certainly was better than anything she could answer to that. Better than the truth you definitely didn’t need to hear aloud.

So she left you in it, gathering her stuff and placing them neatly inside of a pouch she probably cared about more than you before walking out. The sound of your front door closing behind her only made it all painfully obvious.

You blinked your tears away, and held back on your sobs. Pride was too much of a strong word to make it a motive. You probably never had any, or it stopped existing when you started to play a part in her performance.

Shame was just as bad of a choice. Nothing shameful about succumbing to desire. Maybe a little in blurring the lines between the scene and reality.

It took a while to break the silence she left behind. About the same amount of time it took for your tears to reach your lips.

You winced at the feeling, the taste… It was all too familiar, you ended up choking at the memory.

The kisses you shared were always stained by her own tears. Not from sadness, nor happiness. Anger. Emotions you were both supposed to leave out of the equation.

You sniffled, still holding the sobs within your chest. The pressure built up enough to force a chuckle, a laugh out of fear of letting her win.

Funny.

That’s what it could be, the word. Ironically funny.

You barely even knew what you didn’t want to lose anymore, if at all.

It was neither a matter of pride or shame—nothing.

Nothing mattered.

In the world, in your eyes, in her mind.

Nothing except her.

Arthur Conan Doyle was born on 22nd May 1859 at 11 Picardy Place, Edinburgh. 

Arthur was educated at several places before studying medicine at the University of Edinburgh Medical School, including periods working in Aston (then a town in Warwickshire, now part of Birmingham), Sheffield and Ruyton-XI-Towns, Shropshire. He also studied practical botany at the Royal Botanic Garden in Edinburgh.

Whilst he was a medical student, Conan Doyle was profoundly captivated by the skill of his professor, Dr Joseph Bell, in observing the minutest detail regarding a patient’s condition. This approach of diagnostic deduction inspired Conan Doyle’s literary creation, Sherlock Holmes  Sherlock Holmes made his first appearance in A Study of Scarlet, and its success encouraged Conan Doyle to write more stories involving the detective.

Later Conan Doyle focused his work on non-fiction, including to military writings, such as The Great Boer War.

Despite his immense fame and wealth, Conan Doyle remained irked by the fact that his literary writings were not taken more seriously, and threw himself into a huge number of side projects, notably sport and outdoor pursuits (legend has it that he introduced Norwegian downhill skis into the Swiss Alps).

He also regarded his most important public work to have been in ‘spiritualism’, (the photo with the whisp of smoke beside him is said to be a spirit!,) based on research supposedly demonstrating that the souls of the dead could be contacted by the living, which had become fashionable in England partly because of the devastating toll of the First World War. Daniel’s got his hand wrapped firmly around Lando’s, very much wishing he could throw the boy over his shoulder but he’s pretty sure Lando will scream and he has yet to come up with a press statement for the pictures that could come from that. Lando’s being dragged along, the look on his face enough to make a mango sour.

Daniel’s actively ignoring the whines of disapproval coming from the smaller human behind him and trying to keep enough momentum going that Lando doesn’t succeed digging his feet into the ground and toppling them both over. He just needs to get out of here, now.

The hand that isn’t holding onto Lando’s is actively tapping at his phone, trying to communicate to Carlos as to where they are so he can drive the car up.

When they get to the gate Daniel makes the mistake of dropping Lando’s hand to go and beep their key card, the younger taking that opportunity to turn into Usain Bolt and make a run for it. There’s a silent curse that leaves him as he starts running after Lando, taking the time to flip off Sebastian who’s watching the scene unfold with a smirk when he’s running past the Aston Martin garage.

He catches up to Lando relatively quickly, catching the boy around the waist with an oof. Paparazzi be damned, Lando’s up and over his shoulder in a split second and to Daniel’s pleasant surprise, Lando seems to stunned too protest it.

His silence last all but five seconds, fists pounding onto Daniel’s back followed by the. “No! Down, Danny. Down!”

Daniel ignores it, too out of breath to probably answer anyway, picking up the pace to get to his destination quickly, suddenly very aware Michael might’ve been right about the more cardio thing. Soon he’s fitting both him and Lando through the gates, the lights of Carlos’ car flashing at him to indicate he’s there.

Lando’s still struggling when he gets there, Carlos getting out to assist. Together they get Lando in the backseat, who’s too tired out now to struggle but instead has turned into a spaghetti noodle refusing to cooperate. Daniel sits with him in the back, hoping the overly tired and overwhelmed little will fall asleep on the way to the hotel if he can lean against him.

Lando however has positioned himself to be as far away from Daniel as possible while still being inside the car, the tantrum turning to silent tears now that he’s desperately trying to rub away.

Carlos’ sweet nothings from behind the wheel help lessen the tears and even Daniel is mostly forgiven 5 minutes into the ride when Daniel’s left hand is snatched up and laced together with Lando’s.

“Com’ere.” Daniel hushes, positioning them so Lando can rest his head on Daniel’s shoulder, gently guiding the younger’s other hand away from his mouth when he notices the finger chewing.

Daniel’s about to claim victory with how Lando’s eyes are falling shut to the gentle bouncing of the car while they drive and Carlos’ Spanish lullaby when

“McDonalds!”

It’s a squeal so sudden both Carlos and Daniel jump, Lando has shot up from Daniel’s shoulder, eyes wide open and hand abandoned as he bangs it again the window, pointing at the treacherous yellow M that has captivated their little.

“Please, pleeeeease.” Lando’s begging, pretty eyes still wet from the countless tears earlier, blinking at Daniel with his best look of innocence and he can see the hope dripping off the younger’s face.

“I’m sorry. Danny, sorry.” Lando then says, probably well aware the little tantrum earlier would usually not help his chances in being rewarded. “I’ll be so good. So good. Will never run again.”

That’s a lie. Daniel thinks while he bites back the smile that wants to take over his face, sharing a quick look with Carlos through the mirror.

“Ask Papa.” It sounds dangerously close to the ‘ask your father’-comment Daniel himself heard too much growing up.

“Papa pleeeeeease.” He’s put on his sweetest voice, and Daniel knows the little’s getting his way even before they take the right exit. Carlos’ face gives it all away.

It’s all worth the picture he’s painted right now, Lando happily spooning at his McFlurry, his tongue blue from the m&m’s mixed in and the genuine smile taking over his features, still prominent despite the tired eyes. Lando hadn’t smiled like that all day.

Well worth it.
