Leaps and Dives - A Klaine Story (1/14)

Hello everyone,

Welcome to my impromptu entry for the Klaine Word Scramble 2024! I've always liked the idea of this challenge, but I didn't really have an idea for a story. Then, two days ago, I saw this post and there it was :D

That being said, my August is so full that I won't always be able to write up to date for the prompts, but I promise I'll get it done in time. I think this will be done in September at the latest.

I would also like to point out that I am only a casual sports watcher and do not know too much about the rules of the Olympic disciplines. I will research everything as best I can in the short time between prompts, but forgive me if something is not correct. It's still fiction :) But what I love about the Olympics is the atmosphere and the incredible athletic performances, and I hope I can capture that feeling with this story.

Today's word for the first chapter: earbuds

Summary: As the 2024 Paris Olympics unfold, gymnast Blaine Anderson and diver Kurt Hummel find themselves navigating more than just their athletic dreams. Blaine, focused on his second chance at Olympic glory, crosses paths with Kurt, a newcomer to the world of professional diving with extraordinary talent. What begins as a chance encounter blossoms into something neither of them expected.

We Like, Are Totally Spies

When we think about shows that will appeal to boys. Action is the easiest to relate. Something like; Ben 10, American Dragon Jake Long, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and Justice League will be on the list. It has drama, it has fights and it's cool!

However, there has been a movement in that era where specific cartoon shows aim to get girls into action. Kim Possible, Juniper Lee, My Life as a Teenage Robot, and The Winx Club are perfect examples of such shows.

There is an odd case for more girl-centric shows. Something about the need to balance femininity with action. The show needs to feel like an action that happens to have the main characters be girls. This is where today's topic comes in. We're talking about how;

- How's the Mission, Spies? -

< Totally Spies > by Vincent Chalvon-Demersay and David Michel follows three teens; Sam, Clover and Alex from Beverly Hills living a secret life being Super Spies for WOOHP (World Organization Of Human Protection) under their boss; Jerry Lewis.

Their missions involve travelling the world. Fighting mad scientists and twisted outcasts who seek to dominate the world with style and gadgets that conceal themselves as fashionable equipment.

The trio plays specific archetypes. Sam (green) is the brains, Clover (red) is the fashionista/ boy obsessive and Alex (yellow) is the athlete and occasional nerd. Despite their differences, they share several common interests such as their love for shopping and spy skills of agility, hand-to-hand combat and espionage.

Across six seasons, the girls matured from high school to university students. Confronting the daily struggles of homework, social lives and their petty arch-enemy, Mandy.

As a vibe, < Totally Spies > fully leans into the Beverly Hills lifestyle of fabulous fashion and some familiar pop culture names of that era. The show has a mix of the James Bond type of super spy world filled with dull henchmen, high-tech machines and some tacky villains.

- Time to go to Plan B! -

The episodes are condensed into their own episode. Although there have been some arcs that follow specific villains who have a bit of history with the main characters.

Tim Scam is a former agent who went rogue against WOOHP and Terrence Lewis; twin brother to Jerry and a sore thumb to WOOHP. There also reoccurring allies as well. Brittney (cyan) who joined the team as a trainee, Dean from the three-part series < Evil Promotion Much? > and Blaine a freelance agent who dated Clover.

The conflicts, if we can even call them conflicts at all have aged rather strangely. Some of the villains commit petty crimes like kidnapping celebrities due to jealousy or act extreme. Like being anti-consumerist with the solution of destroying malls.

Yet, some are still relatable to this day such as a kid villain who is mad at his father for being busy as a commentary on how parental neglect can cause warped ideas in a child. Whatever, it's a pre-teen show. Let's not look into it too deeply.

The world of Totally Spies is also interconnected with several other shows; [The Amazing Spiez] and [Martin Mystery].

< Martin Mystery > follows Martin, a paranormal investigator for the Center with Martin's step-sister, Diana Lombard and Java the Caveman. Fighting monsters, urban legends and aliens.

According to a special crossover episode. Martin's boss; M.O.M (Mystery Organization Manager) and Jerry know each other. Likewise, in Amazing Spiez; Jerry is also the boss of the Clark siblings. Lee, Marc, Megan and Tony. Sadly, these shows were short-lived and cancelled.

It does raise an interesting point. Why is Totally Spies more popular? As a guess, I think it's because the chemistry between the characters is a lot more interesting and fun.

The three girls are best of friends and while they sometimes bicker over boys, responsibilities and opinions. They will always put their friendship and mission first above all else. It feels more real, in a superficial way.

That an actual girl would have a girlfriend group this tight-knit and if they ever become a part of something bigger than them. They would do it together.

- Here We Go Again! -

Tacky villains, cute super spy girlfriends and awesome gadgets aside. The show has a few good jokes here and there. Its art style borrows a lot from Anime and its colors are groovy to the eyes.

For a show that was meant to attract girls into action. The show has also garnered a large following from boys as well. I think another secret to the success of < Totally Spies > can also be because of its approach to the subject. Like I said in my introduction.

This show is a girl's show. The girls are unapologetic being girly. Doing girl things like shopping, manicure, dating and going on dream vacations but with their secret life as spies. The show balances it out with good action and is still using that girly theme to add to its gadgets.

Heck, some of the gadgets are stuff that I would personally want to have. The Jet Pack backpack, The Wind Tunnel 3000 Tornado Blast Hair Dryer, Lazer lipstick and the Compowder are on my list. Especially with its costume change function.

It's a show that embraces both ends of the spectrum and allows it to show its respective strengths rather than shy away from the themes. With the announcement that this show is going to have a season 7/ soft reboot. It does look promising with several concerns.

But I am hopeful that for a beloved show such as this. The girls will have a proper return and inspire a new generation of girls (and boys) to be < Totally Spies >

The premier of New Brunswick says his government is concerned about trans athletes in girls' sports, but the association regulating school sports says it has not received a single complaint about that issue in at least a decade.

On Friday, when answering questions about his government's review of a school policy that protects trans LGBTQ students, Premier Blaine Higgs said another issue involving children is on his radar.

"There's the real issue of sports and understanding, 'OK what does that look like and how should that go forward?'" Higgs told reporters.

"And working with sports associations to figure that out, because we are concerned about the unfairness on women's teams."

i've recovered a little since yesterday, but i never thought a game could hurt this much. ryujin nippon really gave it their all, they worked so hard, and this loss at the gates of the semifinals was heartbreaking. but it was such an extraordinary, overwhelming game, and as much as it still hurts, it was so fun 🥹 congratulations to team italy for qualifying for the semifinals, they played so thrillingly, and the fact that most of the players from both teams are friends added another special layer to an already extraordinary game!

watching rjn break down after the game broke my heart, they all worked so incredibly hard to get to the place they are now, but i am so proud of them, no matter the outcome of the olympics. this was coach blain's last game as rnj's coach, kentaro is retiring, nishida is taking a break, and sekita announced that he might be retiring too, so it truly feels like the end of something. but despite the tears, what a fantastic journey it has been. this team has achieved so much, from their bronze and silver medals in the vnl to their olympics journey. it may not have always been smooth sailing, but they made us dream, they took our breath away with their clever and impressive volleyball, they made us laugh, cry, smile. their smiles after plays and all the fun they seem to be having is infectious in the best way possible.

seeing our captain, yuki, come back stronger than ever was so deeply inspiring. like many fans, i was introduced to volleyball through haikyu!!, so i was familiar with fictional characters struggling and pulling themselves back up and persevering through everything. but watching yuki do just the same after the game against usa was so incredible - fictional characters can be inspiring like no other, especially in hq's case, but watching a real-life athlete do just the same hits in a different way. if a real person can do it, then we can do it too, it doesn't exist just on paper. yuki is a person i admire greatly, he changed japanese volleyball forever and gave this team his all, he leads with his whole heart and dedicates himself to volleyball fully. thank you for leading this team, yuki.

thank you for everything coach blain, and ryujin nippon, thank you for proving that volleyball is fun with every game, thank you fujii-san for looking after rjn. we will always be proud of you, so keep fighting. ❤️

accidentally got attached to a random, fluffy AU; here's some stuff for it!

- it's basically, modern au where Leland is in prison, and Isolde can't quite take care of both her children on her own- she keeps Frederick, as he's in need of frequent hospital visits and more active care, and sends away Lance for his big brother to take care of :D

(cue bonding and general fluff!)

- Blaine's apartment, a penthouse, obviously, used to be a neutral-colored, clean, minimalistic area that Blaine never cared to decorate any further. It... Is not the same anymore. Lance loves colors, and Blaine frames every picture he makes. It's still rather off-colors but there's splashes of blues, bordering sea-themed during the summer months and becoming a winter wonderland during the colder ones.

- (Blaine says it's because he has an image, that people visit him more often. It's not. He does it to see Lance smile, even if it's hard to admit how much he loves his brother- how his emotions can't be calmed down, even when he knows how weak they make him.)

- Lance thinks everywhere in the city is so, so, so cool. It's a lot different from where he grew up. It's so busy, and, although it can be a bit overwhelming, he loves it, from the strangely soothing amount of noise to the fact that there's so much of everything.

-Blaine takes him to carousels, to museums, to parks- everywhere he wants. Yes, Blaine spoils him. No, he doesn't plan on stopping. ("It's not spoiling," he says. "Lance works for it. Don't you, Lance?" - Lance is trying to battle a statue.)

- Lance is absolute CHAOS at Blaine's fancy socialite parties - he's messing with the lawyers, creating riots with the other children, finding secret passageways and generally being a gremlin, unintentional or otherwise.

- BUT! when he's not doing that, he likes to ask a lot to questions and tries to make Blaine's friends, his associates, laugh with his puns and jokes.

- he takes a specific liking to Griffin, whom Blaine has a one-sided rivalry with. "Call me Uncle," he'll goat to Lance, to which they'll- Blaine and Griffin- get into an argument with each other that leaves Lance giggling.

- on the note of Griffin: Lance makes friends with Leopold, the quiet boy with a snarky sense of humor who likes to sketch people out. They hang out together during the parties.

- Lance takes a deep interest in the medieval times, in the system of knights and lords and everything and in the battles and just- he really, really likes it. He takes to calling Blaine his lord, sometimes teasingly, to which Blaine will either roll his eyes or pretend to Knight him.

- they have a lot of different kinds of tea in their house- along with hot chocolate, no matter the time of year. It's good for their nightmares.

- Lance is still a very athletic kid!! He likes boxing, which is what he continues with, mostly dropping all the other sports his father had him carry. Suzanna, a girl his age, gets him back into fencing- with her friend, Lorena.

- on another note: BAKING. he loves baking. Lance is one of those bakers who always ends up lighting something on fire by the end of it, no matter how well things are going. He's fairly clumsy in the kitchen and he needs a stool for most things, along with everything being a mess by the end of it-- but his cookies turn out well!!!

- Blaine infodumps a lot about random subjects and Lance is 100% listening no matter what the topics about. bro is curious and WANTS TO KNOW!!!

- gift-giving is something they both do, except Blaine's gifts are a golden-hilted sword for the 1800s and Lance's gifts are this random daisy he found and a cool rock he maybe stole.

- Lance cares so much about holidays and birthdays!! he tries to help in any way he can, but , like, he's ten so he doesn't really know how to do anything?? Bro tries to sweep and fails 💀💀 (blaine is appreciative though :D)

- so many plushies. So many movie nights that Blaine pretends not to care too deeply about. So many hugs.

Blaine is the number one jock in school. He’s an athlete, handsome and with humour and doesn’t say no if anyone asks for help. The kind of guy everyone either wants to be or be with. Loved by the entire school, except a few jealous types of course. Even the teachers seem to be in his side, never giving him too much trouble when he’s conveniently forgotten his homework.

Blaine grew up in a home where he was always the golden child, and very prioritised by his parents. This could be the reason to why he under any condition, doesn’t think he’s wrong in the slightest. No one has ever been that mad at him. No one has ever really scolded him.

Blaine loved his family and friends, of course he did! But they all considerably paled in comparison to you.

You were the loveliest creature in the world, in his eyes. There was no one else like you. You were like a burning star among the empty and cold space, easily lighting up his world.

The blonde teen did everything for you to notice him and possibly catch your interest. You like watching movies? He’ll take you to the cinema anytime you want, or if you preferred privacy he’d be glad to invite you to watch something at his house. He doesn’t like reading much, but if you enjoy it he’ll make sure he’s well read. Wouldn’t it be lovely for you to share hobbies?

Don’t feel well? Don’t worry because Blaine will take perfect care of you. He’ll cook your favourite and tuck you in, he’ll even make a blanket burrito of you if you want! You’d look so cute like that, his face would definitely be covered in a pinkish hue at your cuteness.

If you’d allowed him to be your boyfriend, he’d be over the moon. Now he could win all of his games with certainty if you’re with him. Everything would seem to be great in the beginning. With Blaine being so attentive to your needs, would you really need anyone else? After some time you’d start to realise somethings not entirely right with your boyfriend.

Those times he’d abruptly say he’s got something important to do and disappear and then be gone for hours. What was he doing? When other people would come up and chat with you while complimenting you on a shirt you’d bought recently, Blaine would pop up behind you and tell them you didn’t have time, when you in fact did. What was that about? And why would he cancel all your plans with friends for you without notifying you first? He’d tell you he wanted you to watch his game instead of spending unnecessary time with others.

You could understand that, his games were important to him. But you had the right to some alone time away from him. And that was something that was hard to get. Unless you managed to distract him somehow. It wasn’t fair. You shouldn’t have to sneak around your boyfriend. Why did he have to act this way?

Your sneaky behaviour and how he caught you in lies, he became very suspicious. He hoped it wasn’t what he thought it was. The way you would avoid him and lie about your whereabouts when he asked, it could mean one thing. He did not want to imagine it, tough. His heart wouldn’t be able to take it.

While following you one time, Blaine saw you walking into a coffee shop. At first, he relaxed and laughed at himself for thinking such ridiculous things. He knew you liked getting a nice treat once in a while. It seemed fine. Until he noticed him. what the hell, he thought. Rage brewing inside him.

Were you seriously dissing him for someone like that? He knew who he was, Blaine had seen him around school before and that the two of you were friends. But he thought you didn’t hang out anymore, how could you? Not with all of his work to make sure you didn’t have time to meet. So why was it that you were sitting and enjoying yourself together? Without him

He had to do something.

And that he did. When you heard the news of your old friends passing, you were inconsolable. Blaine hated seeing you sad, he’d much rather you be beaming with joy. But it had to happen, there was no other way. Don’t worry, your sweet boyfriend would be there to soothe you.

With him around, you’ll never be alone again.

Skipper

I actually didn't know too much about Skipper, except a vague idea that she was Barbie's younger sister. I have a vague idea I had a Skipper doll as a child but that's the limit of my memory.

But then I was fact-checking some of my other posts and I kept seeing references to the controversial "Growing Up Skipper" so thought I would do a brief dive into her character.

At debut, Skipper was an elementary school student, and allegedly, was debuted for the same reason as Barbie's friend Midge - Barbie had developed a reputation as a sex symbol, so they introduced her more traditional friend (Midge) and a young sister (Skipper) to diversify the brand.

Then in 1975, they decided that Skipper was growing up into a teenager.

Growing Up Skipper is a hard doll to come by. The picture above is the only picture I could find of her in box and that was on Ebay, selling for AUD $1000. Now, granted, this is partly because as a 1975 release she is almost 50 years old - but she apparently did not sit right with customers upon release.

The gimmick of Skipper, that Mattel would later use again for the My Scene "Growing Up Glam" line, was that if you twisted her arm she would grow taller and sprout rubber breasts.

I actually have no idea how Growing Up Skipper functioned on a mechanical level so here is a link to a video showing how she works. I am not at all affiliated with this channel, it was just the first one that showed how Growing Up Skipper actually functioned.

In 1985, Skipper graduated to "Hot Stuff" with a very 80s athletics look, then "Teen Fun" in 1988.

What I notice most of all is how different Skipper has looked over the years. And with good reason, I suppose - Mattel has officially aged her up from 9 years old on debut, to 14, and then finally to 16 in 1997 when they started marketing her as "Teen Skipper".

Skipper has had a couple of boyfriends - Scott, in 1980 and Kevin, in 1990. She was at one point going to have a third boyfriend named Zach - they even made a head mold for him! However he did not get produced. Because they decided Skipper is actually too young to date? Who knows. However, Mattel did reuse that head, for Generation GIrl Blaine -- my boy!!

These days Skipper is a funky, tech-savvy teen who sports dyed purple and brown hair. This is a random Skipper that happens to be for sale at a local department store.

Today [March 13th] is Ken Day! Kenneth Sean "Ken" Carson first hit store shelves in 1961 and, in a move that preceded reality TV by a decade or three, we all got to watch as Barbie met the man of her dreams.

Since then Ken has gone through almost as many incarnations as Barbie herself and had over 40 different careers. In celebration of all that fantastic plastic, here are just ten of the top Ken dolls produced over the years...

The 'fun' of shaving Ken has been a staple of his repertoire over the years; there are versions from 1996, 1999, 2010, and 2019.

But, as ever, it's the original that's best. Here is 1979's Sport & Shave Ken. Not only did he come with this spiffing tennis outfit, he also had a shaving mug, two 'razors', and a marker pen of your very own to draw on Ken's facial hair...

According to the brochure: "It's Ken with a whole new look for the 1980s. He's athletic. He's all man."

Indeed.

Cool Times Ken.

Never has a name been quite so misleading.

There's a reason Pixar went with this Ken era for the Toy Story movies, and it certainly wasn't because of Ken's close relationship with the concept of cool.

Sometimes your problem is not that Ken has too much facial hair. It's that he just doesn't have enough. Luckily 1972's Mod Hair Ken had you covered. The same idea was utilised again in 1975 for The Now Look Ken, except this time around his hair was longer to capture the true essence of mid 70s cool.

Ken has been a doctor many times - 1963, 1992, 1995, 1996, 1997, 2011, 2018 - but 1987's offering beats the rest hands down. Not only is Ken a doctor, but you can fold the lapels of his shiny nylon medical coat down and he's ready for a night of wining and dining!

What a doll.

In 1993 Mattel redesigned Ken to fulfil little girls' requests that Barbie's beau be cooler. Ken was now so cool he was attracting interest from all quarters, including the US gay community who were sure Ken's cock ring necklace came straight - heh - from the club scene. As a result Earring Magic Ken sold out for Christmas '93, and remains the best selling Ken doll of all time in spite of Mattel discontinuing and recalling the doll once they realised Ken's secret was out of the closet...

In 2010 Mattel released Sugar Daddy Ken, so named - they say - because he owns a little dog called Sugar.

Back in 2004, just in time for Valentine's Day, Barbie ditched Ken in favour of Australian surfer dude, Blaine. Blaine O'Hare - or at least his face sculpt - began life in 1998 when Totally Yo-Yo Skipper was initially set to gain a new friend called Zach. Though he never actually made it into production, his features were used for 1999's Generation Girl Dance Party Blaine.

The Generation Girl line followed Barbie's time at high school in NYC, introducing a variety of new friend dolls and spawning another Blaine in 2000. When he returned in 2004 Blaine had wisely dropped the 'curtains' hairstyle and traded in New York for California. In this continuity the pair met through Blaine's younger sister, Summer, who was good friends with Barbie.

In fact, voting was held through the Barbie.com website to determine who Cali Girl Barbie ought to go for - Ken, Blaine, long time pal Steven, another newcomer named Diego, or stay single. We all know how that went. Ken went away to lick his wounds for a couple of years, but in 2006 he was back with a new look. It wasn't enough for Barbie to take him back though and the pair remained 'just good friends' until another PR campaign saw them get back together in 2011.

OTHER PERSONAL INFO: I never heard of Summer until now, since I had outgrown playing with Barbies by the time she was introduced. But I like the look of her very much. Her titian hair, hazel eyes, and aquiline nose give her a distinctly different vibe than Barbie, less "bubble gum cutie pie" and more sophisticated, which is refreshing. And while I haven't watched Barbie: Life in the Dreamhouse, what I've read about her portrayal there, with her high energy, sportiness, and competitiveness, combined with the fact that she's Australian, makes her sound likable and different from the Barbie stereotype. If she had been around when I was little, I'm sure would have loved her.

Two more New Brunswick ministers are speaking out about the review of a policy intended to provide an inclusive environment for LGBTQ2 students.

The government has been under fire over the decision to review portions of Policy 713, which sets out standards to protect queer students, such as making teachers use a student’s preferred pronouns and ensuring schools have gender-neutral washrooms available.

Premier Blaine Higgs has taken issue with two elements of the policy: that students under 16 can have their preferred name and pronouns used in the learning environment without parental consent and that students can participate in sports based on their gender identity.

Higgs said he believes parents should be informed if their child is seeking to use a different name or pronouns at school, even if it puts them at risk. He says the province is also looking to understand if it’s “fair” for transgender athletes to compete alongside their cisgender peers.

But some in the premier’s caucus have begun to speak out on the necessity of the policy.
