Irgendwie ist der heißeste Kontinent der Erde die Heimat eines Vogels, der am häufigsten mit dem kältesten in Verbindung gebracht wird: der Antarktis. Und doch haben die drei Pinguinarten, die ich gesehen habe, alle in warmen Gefilden gelebt: der Galápagos-Pinguin vor der Insel Isabela, die direkt am Äquator liegt, der kleine Pinguin im supertrockenen, superheißen Australien und jetzt der afrikanische Pinguin Boulders Penguin Colony in Südafrika. Wenn Sie Kapstadt kennen, kennen Sie die Boulders Penguin Colony in Simon's Town 40 km südlich. Boulders-Pinguin-Kolonie Boulders ist die Heimat einer landgestützten Kolonie von 3.000 afrikanischen Pinguinen. Es ist eines von wenigen auf der Welt und hat sich zu einem beliebten Touristenziel entwickelt. Boulders liegt im Tafelberg-Nationalpark und umfasst drei Strände, einen Aussichtsbereich und Holzstege, die so gestaltet sind, dass der Abstand zwischen Pinguinen und Besuchern gewahrt bleibt. Auf Fotografien der Boulders Penguin Colony scheinen die Vögel den Sand zu bedecken, so viele sind es. Wenn sie nicht faul sind, watscheln sie herum, kippen um, schreien laut und benehmen sich im Allgemeinen wie Statisten für Pixar. Die Anzahl der umliegenden Inselkolonien stieg und die Brutzahlen stiegen 2005 auf 3.900 Pinguine. Leider haben die Zahlen wieder abgenommen und liegen derzeit bei etwa 3.000. Ursachen des Niedergangs Der Rückgang des Afrikanischen Pinguins wird durch mehrere Faktoren verursacht. Lublob #5: Boracay de Cavite x El Fraile

Dubbed as the Little Boracay in Cavite or Boracay De Cavite, Katungkulan Beach in Marine Base, Ternate has been a favorite among many tiga South (Southerners). The name of the beach may be translated to "call of duty" in English which I think is very symbolic and beautiful.

I hate to shatter your idea of the place, but I must say that Katungkulan Beach is far from the fine white sand beach of Boracay. However, it has a charm of its own. The drive on the way to Katungkulan, for example, is a never ending greenery of Ternate and Maragondon- two of the most forested areas in Cavite that are home to diverse species of flora and fauna. Not to mention the heart warming welcome you will receive from the monkeys at the Marine Base’s entrance. Unlike other monkeys I’ve encountered before, these aren’t as aggressive, but caution is still advised. 

When we visited the place, it’s closed to public due to a military exercise. However, since one of us is a family member of those in the camp, we were allowed entrance and we had the place to ourselves. Being a marine base, policies are strictly being implemented. We had to go through a lot of checks before we could really experience the cove. There are CCTV cameras around the area and the area is filled with warning signs. We were also not allowed to take photos of the military people and the camp.

We were escorted to where they put their life vests and were introduced to some of the officers. We were assured that we will be safe and we’re informed of where to get what else we might need. They were kind enough to offer us a tour around the beach. We were supposed to do a short trek to get a closer look at El Fraile, but the weather was having a little cry fest. We were given a little background of the place instead. 

El Fraile or the Fort Drum is known as a concrete battleship situated at the mouth of Manila Bay due south of Corregidor Island. It’s basically an island that is made to be a tactical fort after the Spanish-American War. El Fraile was leveled out and reinforced with concrete which made it look like a massive battleship with two gun batteries on the fort’s upper surface that are bigger than those at Corregidor. The construction lasted for five-long years. It was then taken by the Japanese forces in World War II until 1945. El Fraile is said to be the last to surrender to the Japanese forces. Our little vacation and scouting turned into a small discussion of our history and a moment to remember what we had to go through as a nation. Unfortunately, the fort wasn’t just abandoned, it was taken advantage of of those who seek steel. It’s being taken piece by piece and no protection is at sight. 

A few more searches would lead you to this general idea that Fort Drum is a  unique Harbor Defense fort that is unlike any other. Yes, there is nothing else like Fort Drum in the world. It is the strongest and most tactical maritime defense of the Filipinos- considered as both a naval and an engineering success.

For a country to stand on its own, it has to have the ability to protect its territories. El Fraile could have pose a great threat to anyone who would dare declare war against the Philippines. The military advancements then, with the influence of those who tried to occupy us, if developed to our benefit, would have given us hope and confidence that we can protect our country.

Eine Bentota River Safari verspricht allerhand Gruseliges: Krokodile, Schlangen, Fledermäuse und Eidechsen. So erging es uns bei uns Ich war skeptisch gegenüber unserem Skipper. Klein und schmächtig und Mitte Teenager, brachte er kaum ein Begrüßungswort hervor. Peter und ich bestiegen das Boot und machten uns ohne Anweisungen auf zu unserer Bentota-Flusssafari. Wir hatten einige Informationen von unserem Hotel über die Länge und den Preis der Tour (2,5 Stunden, 1.800 LKR / 12 USD pro Person), aber darüber hinaus hatten wir keine Ahnung, was wir sehen könnten. Trotzdem waren wir froh, in Bentota zu sein. Die Küstenstadt im Distrikt Galle in Sri Lanka liegt 65 km (40 Meilen) südlich von Colombo und bietet zusammen mit Trincomalee im Norden einen guten Strandstopp, um einen Ausflug zu buchen. Wir fuhren von Colombo aus für ein paar Tage an den Strand und buchten eine Last-Minute-Flusssafari, und so fanden wir uns auf einem Boot mit dem schweigsamsten Skipper diesseits von Finnland wieder. (Wer die Finnen kennt, weiß was ich meine.) Atlas & Boots Bentota Beach bietet eine schöne Buchstütze für eine Reise durch Sri Lanka Wir machten uns auf den Weg und setzten uns in die Sonne. Vielleicht wäre dies eher eine angenehme Bootsfahrt auf dem Fluss als eine Safari an sich. Vielleicht war das in Ordnung. Wir hatten viel Zeit in Sri Lanka eingeplant, einschließlich Stopps im Yala-Nationalpark für Leoparden und Udawalawe für Elefanten. Was spielte es für eine Rolle, wenn wir auf unserer Bentota-Flusssafari nichts sahen? Wir fuhren eine Viertelstunde lang dahin, bis der Skipper das Boot anhielt und auf einen Baum zeigte. Wir streckten uns und blinzelten, sahen aber nichts. "Dort!" sagte er und bedeutete uns aufzustehen und nachzusehen. Tatsächlich lag faul auf einem Ast ein großer, fetter Wassermonitor. Erwachsene können bis zu 2 m (6,6 ft) lang werden und das größte Exemplar, das in Sri Lanka gefunden wurde, war satte 3,21 m (10,5 ft). Bald hielten wir wieder an, diesmal wegen eines Chamäleons, das von leuchtend grünen Blättern getarnt war. Unser Skipper war vielleicht nicht gesprächig, aber er hatte auf jeden Fall ein gutes Auge. Atlas & Boots Ein schlaues Chamäleon, das auf unserer Bentota-Flusssafari gesichtet wurde Entgegen der landläufigen Meinung ändern Chamäleons ihre Farbe nicht in erster Linie zur Tarnung, sondern zur sozialen Signalisierung und zur Kontrolle der Körperwärme. Wir schlängelten uns an Flussbehausungen und dichten Mangroven vorbei, machten eine Pause, um die Vogelwelt zu beobachten und ein oder zwei Schlangen zu entdecken. Wir lehnten ab – höflicher als wir sollten – und setzten die Tour fort. Wir versuchten unserem verdutzten Kapitän zu erklären, dass wir es für falsch hielten, Tiere in Gefangenschaft zu halten, nur um Touristen zu unterhalten. Ich fürchte, wir kamen uns wie privilegierte Westler vor, die solche Sensibilitäten nur hatten, weil wir sie uns leisten konnten. Bald hielten wir an einer Kokosnussfabrik am Fluss (mit der üblichen Führung durch den Geschenkeladen) und gingen dann wieder an Bord des Bootes – schuldbewusst, weil wir nichts gekauft hatten.

Zurück auf dem Fluss navigierten wir durch ein enges Mangrovendach. Mit einem Soundtrack, der nur aus Vogelgezwitscher und dem leisen Knarren unseres Bootes bestand, fühlte sich die Szene unglaublich weit entfernt an. Atlas & Boots Schweben durch ein Blätterdach aus Mangroven Als wir aus dem Blätterdach herauskamen, entdeckten wir einen Baum voller Fledermäuse – aber immer noch keine Krokodile. Bald drehten wir um und machten uns auf den Weg zurück zum Ufer, wobei wir gelegentlich für Schlangen oder Chamäleons anhielten. Eine halbe Stunde vor Schluss stoppte unser Skipper das Boot erneut. Leise deutete er durch eine kleine Baumkrone. Dort, auf der anderen Seite, brütete ein kleines Krokodil, dessen Reptilienaugen deutlich über der Wasserlinie schwebten. Atlas & Boots Ein Krokodil brütet im Fluss Bentota Obwohl es verdeckt war, war dies eine weitaus bessere Möglichkeit, ein Krokodil zu sehen, als eines mit zugeklebtem Mund anzufassen. Als wir zurück zum Ufer gingen, diskutierten wir, ob sich eine Bentota-Flusssafari lohnt oder nicht. Angesichts des relativ geringen Preises glauben wir, dass dies der Fall ist, aber nur, wenn Sie sowieso nach Bentota kommen. Der Stadt fehlen die großen Sehenswürdigkeiten von Yala, Udawalawe, Ella, Adam's Peak und Sigiriya, aber angesichts der Nähe zu Colombo und seines hübschen Strandabschnitts ist es eine absolut schöne Art, Ihre Reise zu beginnen oder zu beenden. Bentota-Flusssafari: Das Wesentliche Was: Eine Bentota-Flusssafari, um Krokodile, Chamäleons, Wasserwarane, Fledermäuse, Vögel und Schlangen zu sehen. Wo: Wir übernachteten im Amal Beach, einem Mittelklassehotel am Strand. Das Amal bietet WLAN im Zimmer, ein hoteleigenes Restaurant und kostenlose Parkplätze vor Ort. Es ist eine kurze Tuk-Tuk-Fahrt zum Zentrum von Aluthgama, das, obwohl es keinen Charme hat, alle Annehmlichkeiten einer modernen Stadt bietet. (Wir empfehlen das Restaurant Happy Garden für ein günstiges und leckeres Essen.) Der Strand ist weitläufig und größtenteils leer, sodass es einfach ist, einen privaten Platz zu finden, wenn Sie bereit sind, von der Sonnenliege abzuweichen. Eines der bezauberndsten Dinge an Amal und Bentota im Allgemeinen sind die Eisenbahnschienen, die es vom Strand trennen. Theoretisch klingen Eisenbahngleise am Strand zweifelhaft, aber in der Praxis war es eine charmante Ergänzung des Geländes. Tagsüber ist ein Bahnwärter im Einsatz, nachts verschließt ein Tor die Zufahrt. Wenn Sie sich für Amal entscheiden, beachten Sie, dass das Strandhotel mit gehobeneren Wohnungen in den Amal Villa Apartments auf der anderen Straßenseite gepaart ist, also merken Sie sich die Wohnung, die Sie buchen. Wann: Die beste Reisezeit für Bentota ist Januar bis März, wenn die Stadt meist sonnig ist. Mit April kommt die Monsunzeit. Juni bis September sind die nassesten Monate, aber immer noch sonnig. Im November wird das Wetter heiß und schwül, aber es ist immer noch eine gute Zeit für einen Besuch, besonders für Diwali-Feierlichkeiten. Wie: Wir buchten die Little Swan Bentota-Bootstour (2,5 Stunden, 1.800 LKR / 12 USD pro Person), waren aber traurig, als wir sahen, dass sie eine Fotomöglichkeit mit einem Babykrokodil beinhaltete. Daher empfehlen wir, sich stattdessen bei Sri Lanka Water Sports oder Diyakawa Water Sports (+94 77 916 5330) zu erkundigen. Sie können von Colombo nach Bentota mit der Bahn gelangen (sehen Sie sich hier den Fahrplan an). Es lohnt sich, die Züge zum nahe gelegenen Aluthgama zu überprüfen, da sie häufiger fahren als die nach Bentota. Von Aluthgama können Sie ein Tuk Tuk zu Ihrem Hotel nehmen (300 LKR / 2 USD). Abhängig von Ihrem Ausgangspunkt stehen Buslinien zur Verfügung. Es ist erwähnenswert, dass wir Busreisen in Sri Lanka als ziemlich stressig empfanden, sodass Sie vielleicht stattdessen einen Transfer nehmen möchten. Ihr Hotel kann dies arrangieren, aber es lohnt sich immer, einen Rabatt auszuhandeln, da diese normalerweise überhöht sind (z. B. wenn 15.000 LKR angegeben sind, fragen Sie nach 11.000).

Viele Touristen entscheiden sich dafür, einen Fahrer für die gesamte Reise zu mieten. Dies kostet ungefähr 45 USD pro Tag (einschließlich der Tage, an denen Sie den Fahrer nicht benutzen).
