The Metal Wanderlust 2022 Favorites: J. Wukotich
The Metal Wanderlust 2022 Favorites: J. Wukotich
What follows is a list of 50 albums that helped get me through 2022. I will turn 50 in 2023, so sharing that many albums made sense. I always have such a difficult time narrowing things down, putting everything in some sort of order wasn’t a task I felt up to, not to mention after five or six choices “order” starts meaning less, if anything at all. Aside from my AOTY pick, I didn’t bother much…

Album Review: Catafalque - Dybbuk (Aural Music / Code666)
Your soul is up for grabs, and Catafalque have the soundtrack to its collection.
Catafalque deliver drone doom metal with strong influences of noise and industrial, resulting in an extreme, experimental and uncompromising sound. Their new album Dybbuk, inspired by a malicious spirit from ancient folklore, will be released on October 13th, 2023, via Aural Music / Code666.
Wow. Just, wow. Somehow Catafalque have managed to capture the feeling of dread and horror that anyone…

i've been casually collecting some cd singles mostly for the artwork and the novelty of it all tbh, but i got this and never knew there was a "guitars down" version of sugar :0 upon listening it seems the biggest differences with this vs the album version are:
the instrumentals/sustained controlled feedback that usually plays behind the prechoruses is also used between the chorus and the 2nd verse, over the normal chuggy riff
the backing vocal harmonies in the chorus seem to be significantly brought forward which sounds STUNNING, easily the highlight of this version
made it (+the music or the misery) available to download as a flac file here :)

everything about bellumbeck makes me go insane. i don’t even know how to express half of it. the way everyone is in mortal danger during that fight. linebeck is forced to try and kill link right after saving his life. the one time he’s actually taking part in a boss battle with link he’s the boss he’s fighting. the way bellum seems to take his time grabbing him. the fact that bellumbeck never really pays any attention to ciela and bellum just grabs and restrains her instead of putting her out of commission or straight up killing her. one of his attacks is a spin attack much like link’s and we can assume that linebeck has probably seen link do a spin attack at some point. the way bellumbeck’s helmet is designed to look vaguely similar to linebeck. if bellumbeck kills you when you have a purple potion it plays the same sting as when a phantom catches and attacks you. this is the second time this link has had a sword fight with another human as his final battle but this time he is effectively fighting alone. of the main cast linebeck is the most detached from the rest of the group and is the only one to be an enemy. bellumbeck’s helmet opens after some attacks and right before he’s defeated. linebeck’s character theme utilizes harpsichord and excludes piano and bellum’s boss theme utilizes piano and excludes harpsichord. bellumbeck’s theme includes both and for the first half and near the end of the song they play the exact same melody at the same time. linebeck is suggested to be unable to fight or properly protect himself in battle for the entire game and then in the final boss in a twisted, awful way he finally gets a chance to be a competent fighter capable of defending himself. does any of this make sense

Incendiaire
Culmination
With fire in my feet
I dance for you
Succumb to the heat
Tiptoe on dying embers
Onto the rhythm of our tragedy
A round of applause
As they witness our screams vaporize
Watch my last breath dissolve
In the night
Take a bow for the lost
Darling, our sun is burning out
This is the last time

1023-002
I had prepared a whole other thing for my first rotation, and then I realized it was october, so I changed the whole theme to go for a vampire theme lmao
Song titles have the links to individual songs, link for all 5 of them at the end
So in this pack, there is :
藍華柳~aikaryu - ヴァンパイアで満杯や! (VAMPIRE de manpai ya!)
This song is the first song that came to mind, when I decided to go for a vampire theme lol
VANPAIA de manpai ya! was a live-distributed single released in 2005 (i had to write it in romaji at least once because it's a pun huhuhuhuh)
Aural Vampire - Hot Blood Workout
I could honestly have put any Aural Vampire song tbh, but I decided to go for one of the first song I heard from them :)
Hot Blood Workout appeared on a self-titled, self-released EP released in 2008 (although my brain wants to say it might have been released on like myspace first or something ? i remember that song being older than 2008, but oh well)
Gackt - Lust for Blood
This is the culprit for the theme change :D
Now I dont particularly listen to a lot of Gackt's music, but Lust for Blood had followed me ever since I first heard it, about 20 years ago :)
Lust for Blood appears on Crescent, released in 2003 (if you have just one gackt album to look up, maybe look this one up ?)
Kaya - Carmilla (my rip)
I couldn't make a vampire theme and not include that one lolz :D
It was the first time that Hizaki was composing for Kaya, at the time, and I just immediately fell in love with it, as it was pretty much tailored for me (it wasnt but you know....)
Carmilla was a single released in 2007 and this is the version you're getting here ! (not that the album version is that much different, it mostly is longer iirc... i have not listened to the album version in forever oops)
Luci'fer Luscious Violenoue - 翼を折られたヴァンパイア (tsubasa wo orareta VAMPIRE)
That's the second song that popped in my mind to go with the vampire theme lol. That too is a song that I have been listening to for 20 years lol
Tsubasa wo orareta VAMPIRE was found on a matina omnibus/box set released in 2001, and then on an album in 2002
Get the full pack here ^^

you ever hear a song from a band you've never heard before that makes you fall in love her second you hear it?
So you spend all day listening to it, you've got the lyrics memorized by nightfall, you've got little choreo steps you can hit when you need to, already know which notes you can bridge and which you'll break trying to stretch toward, right?
You're obsessed with the fucking song and you don't know why, but that's okay, because it's a great song and music is the answer. But you're curious, so you go listen to some other songs by the band. Their most popular songs, older ones, newer ones, whatever they've got on the net! But 20 songs later you're disappointed and wondering 'how is it they only made ONE song I like? That seems like an anomaly... not even a chorus on one of these other ones??'
But you can't find whatever answer you were searching for, so you decide to leave the gift horse un-surveyed. Instead you go on streaming website (name redacted because they're not sponsoring this post), load the song up, and - wait, whats the first comment say?
[ God, I miss (seemingly unrelated musical act) already ]
??? What? I mean - I'll admit the sound is kinda similar, but - Well the vibes are alike too, actually. Very similar to a big song (unrelated act) released a few summers before this song... and I do love THAT song just as I do this one. Is - Mother fucker, did they copyright infringe (unrelated act)?!
Do a small google. Turns out (unrelated act) produced this song for the 'new' band, and as such this was their last musical act together before disbanding.
This song was their final auditory gift to the world, and it feels like them. It sounds like them. It's been in my mind all day, I've listened to it 3 times since I started writing this post.
I didn't expect to be actually tearing up a little about legacies & how music is the answer, but I'm so glad I'm here. This really brightened my whlle outlook on things.
