An Light and Airy Guesthouse in a Former Potting Shed
Tumblr media
Hej kompisar! I hope you had a lovely, relaxing weekend. I mentioned last week that I'd been chasing my tail, and it seems this week is set to continue - I arrived in Gothenburg late last night as I'm set to present on stage at Möbelmässan (the Gothenburg furniture fair) this afternoon. Eeeeek! During my research, I've learnt a lot about 2025 interior design trends which I'd love to share with you soon. In the meantime, I thought I'd start the blog week with a total reset in the form of a white shed, also known as The Potting Shed. Set in the grounds of Bunya House in Bowral, Queensland Australia, I found myself immediately drawn to it today as a) it's far away 2) it's on Airbnb so we can actually book it! 3) it's small - and if you've seen the tour of our tiny cabin, you know I love small and finally 4) it oozes simplicity. The shed is made up of one main room with a sink, small table and bed as well as a bathroom. Since it's hard to tell from the pictures - as you walk in the door seen above, the sink is immediately to your right and the table straight ahead. The bed is to the left. Ready to take a little tour of this simple, airy guesthouse?

Could you imagine staying here and filling it with your holiday wardrobe and food picked up at the local market? Perhaps we could meet there: the main house is also available to rent through Airbnb. Now there's an idea for a Monday! I already see a spot for that glass of wine (Australian of course!). Is there anything that stood out to you about this little cottage? I'd love to hear below! Although I mainly show Scandinavian homes, you'll have noticed I do have a particular penchant for Australian properties (I must visit one day, never been!). You can see all the tours from the past here. Right friends, I need to get ready for this talk now, wish me luck and have a fab start to the week. Kram Read the full article

ASX rises as GDP growth slumps; Treasury Wines rallies, miners fall
Tumblr media
The Australian Stock Exchange (ASX) experienced a rise despite a slump in GDP growth, reflecting investor optimism amid economic challenges. Treasury Wine Estates led the gains with a significant rally, bolstered by strong earnings and favorable market conditions. In contrast, the mining sector faced declines as commodity prices softened and global demand showed signs of weakening. The mixed performance across sectors highlights the varied impact of economic fluctuations on different industries. Investors are closely monitoring fiscal policies and global market trends, with the focus shifting to upcoming economic data and central bank decisions. The ASX's resilience in the face of sluggish GDP growth underscores the market's complex dynamics and the diverse factors influencing investor sentiment. As Treasury Wines outperforms, the downturn in miners serves as a reminder of the ongoing uncertainties in the economic landscape.

Can an investment company sell wine? Examples of financial and blockchain companies entering new markets
More than a decade ago, a trend towards products ecosystems emerged. For example, Google includes the Android operating system, Google Pixel smartphones, hundreds of applications and services, and much more. Apple and Microsoft are not far behind. And even small companies are looking to expand their ecosystem to offer their customers more important products and services in one place. Now we can see this even in financial and blockchain companies. Let's look at a few examples.
Tumblr media
Block
Block, formerly known as Square, is an American financial technology company that provides payment processing services, payment terminals, and other financial products and services. The company was founded in 2009 by Jack Dorsey, who is also the founder and former CEO of Twitter.
In 2022, Block acquired Australian company Afterpay, one of the world's largest BNPL service providers. This transaction was valued at $29 billion and became one of the largest in the history of fintech.
BNPL (Buy Now Pay Later) is a financing model that allows buyers to make purchases now and pay for them later, usually over multiple installments. BNPL services have become popular in recent years because they offer consumers more flexible payment options than credit cards.
The acquisition of Afterpay allowed Block to expand its presence in the BNPL segment and compete with other major players in this market such as PayPal and Affirm. This also allowed Block to enter a new, non-cryptocurrency market.
DarWin
DarWin Enterprise initially focused on currency arbitrage and offered related investment products. Over time, the company expanded and now includes more than 10 projects in a wide variety of areas. For example:
DarSoulution — online education for personal and professional growth.
DarFormatia — private business events for the most successful community members
DarVillage — retreat centers in places of power. These are large-scale complexes with their own territory and developed internal infrastructure. Entire themed settlements. Work is already underway on the construction of DarVillage centers on the Baltic Sea.
Jet Up — a comprehensive set of tools for investing in venture projects and businesses
DarWino — NFT investments in premium alcohol.
And others…
Thus, today DarWin 's WinWin investment pool includes a large number of income sources, which together provide stability and security to the pool, while maintaining returns of up to 8% per month.
These two successful examples prove that going beyond your niche is possible, and sometimes even useful.

Australia at risk of 'economic coercion'
Tumblr media
1. Foreign Direct Investment to Australia (FDI)
Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) is advantaging the economy of Australia. FDI not only helped Australia enhance existing industries, but it was also providing capital to finance new industries. FDI brings in new business with connections in different markets, which opens up exporting opportunities and increases the employment rate. FDI helps Australia to boost its infrastructure as the higher growth supported by FDI pays dividends for Australians, which increase the tax revenues for federal and state government to spend on infrastructure like hospitals, schools, roads, and other essential services with the increased funds. FDI also encourages competition in the Australian market which can increase business innovation by bringing new technologies and services (The Benefits of Foreign Investment, n.d.). In contrast, FDI also brings disadvantages to Australia. Australia has experienced unexpected inflation increases with more foreign firms investing (Faeth, 2010, p. 147). It will cause reducing in purchasing power of some Australians due to uneven prices rising and distorting purchasing power for recipients and payers of fixed interest rates over time. (Oner, 2022). Malaysia and Australia Free Trade Agreement (MAFTA) help Australian to export goods to the Malaysia market more accessible, for example, Australia has the opportunity to ship their agricultural product to capitalize on the demand of Malaysian which bring money into the Australian economy (Five Benefits of MAFTA, 2019).
2. Emerging International Trade Trends
2.1 Import Trends
Tumblr media
Figure 2: Total Import of Australia
In January 2023, the total imports of Australia grew by 20.9%, which shows an increase of 10.8% compared to the previous month and recorded 26.7 billion USD (CEICdata.com, 2018). Machinery and transport equipment are Australia's main imports, holding 40% of total imports, followed by road vehicles, which represent 12%. Australia also imports petroleum, manufactured goods, chemicals, and related products. Australia's main import partners include China, the United States, Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Germany, and Malaysia. Among these countries, China holds Australia's most significant import, representing 23% of total Australian imports (TRADING ECONOMICS, n.d.). The top item Australia imports from China is electrical and electronic equipment, valued at $16.22 Billion in 2022. Australia's imports from China had a total value was $83.73 billion in 2022 (TRADING ECONOMICS, n.d.). The advantage of importing is to get good quality products by importing high-quality products from the originated sources. There is also a currency risk for Australia to import too much from other countries. It will cause the Australian currency rate drops in the international market, and other countries will load it over (Overseas, 2020).
2.2 Export Trend
Tumblr media
Figure 3: Total Export of Australia
Total export in Australia reached 12.5% in January 2023, which is an increase of 21.4% compared to the previous month ((CEICdata.com, 2018). Iron Ore, Coal Briquettes, Petroleum Gas, Gold, and Wheat are the top exports of Australia, and Australia mainly export to China which represent 40.3% of total export followed by Japan (13.7%), South Korea (8.58%), India (5.99%) and Chinese Taipei (3.86%). Australia has become the world’s biggest exporter of Iron Ore, which will value $118 billion in 2021(Observatory of Economic Complexity, 2022). Australia is the fifth more prominent wine exporter in the world. There are over 18000 different wines exported from Australia to more than 100 destinations worldwide (Australian Trade and Investment Commission, n.d.). Exporting wine, and has increased profits in Australia from new sales channels as exporting is giving opportunities for exporters and winemakers to look to new markets for generating more profit. On the other side, it needs additional costs for shipping, and there are many additional costs to be considered for exporters, from manufacturing to documentation, administration, expenses, distribution, risk management, and marketing (Understand the Benefits and Risks of Exporting Wine, n.d.).
3. Social-Political Issue
youtube
Based on the newspaper article 11 points out that Australia lacks trade diversity and is an overreliance on China. This has led to socio-political issues in Australia, which contribute to the low income of the producers and exporters. Due to Australia’s position on an independent international Covid-19 inquiry, China has applied sanctions on Australia. The Chinese government used trade as a politically sanctioned weapon against Australia by blocking the import of wine, barley, cotton, copper, coal, sugar, and lobsters from Australia. This shows that overreliance on China has brought Australia a severe risk in the economy significantly decreasing the income of the producers and exporters. There is a noticeable drop in revenues in Australian wine and lobster exports. Before 2019, in Australia, more than 40% of all wine export was exported to China, but it is now fallen near to zero exporting Australia wine to China (Wilson, 2020).
Moreover, the export sales of lobsters also fell as China used to occupy 96% of the total export sales of Australian lobsters. It affects the income of fishermen and wine producers as the demand has decreased. Before China Australian trade restriction, Australian fishermen could sell per kilogram of lobster for around 80 dollars, but because of the trade restriction, the price of lobster dropped, and the value of lobster worth 25 dollars per kilogram or even worse. Beef and barley industries also occurred similar situations (Winners and Losers: The Real Consequences of the China-Australia Trade War, 2021). Therefore, overreliance on China in exporting has imperiled Australia's economy and caused a decrease in the income of the producers and exporters.
4. Negative Implication of low income
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Figure 4: Negative Implication
The low income of the producers and exporters is impacting their living conditions and health condition as they are limited in access to basic needs such as food, housing, and healthcare. Low-income people are suffering from financial stress as they struggle to make ends meet and pay bills. Therefore, the rates of tobacco and alcohol use increase among people with the pressure of living on a low income, increasing the risk of health problems (Cunningham, 2018). Additionally, low-income families in Australia have difficulty with food security typically, which cannot afford satisfactory qualities of food. This led to health issues as they cannot get enough nutrition to maintain good health (Rosier, 2011). Instead of physical health, lower incomes also affect mental health. Lower-income people have less access to health-promoting goods and services and cannot maintain control or security over their lives (Isaacs, Enticott, Meadows & Inder, 2018 p. 2). Australia has high distress among low-income people, which is around 1 in 10 individuals, over one-fifth of Australians (Isaacs, Enticott, Meadows & Inder, 2018 p. 1). Low-income people also have a problem in difficulty sleeping (Cunningham, 2018).
Moreover, low-income communities will cause increasing government expenditures as Australian low-income individuals may need to rely on government assistance programs. Low-income households are especially at an expanded hazard of encountering budgetary lodging push. Therefore, Australia has provided housing assistance to low-income families to improve their quality of life (Housing assistance in Australia, Housing assistance, n.d.). This has to increase Australian government expenditures as the government has to spend cots on maintaining and providing public housing including the cost of construction of housing units, maintenance fees, and management cost. The Australian government expects to spend around $8.4 billion to help low-income communities with housing problems as the Australian government is responsible for improving the life quality of low-income communities (Housing | Department of Social Services, Australian Government, n.d.).
5. Export Diversification Policy
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Figure 5: Export Diversification Policy
Australia should implement Trade diversification of Australian exports to gain new opportunities in Australia's emerging markets. Australia's trade is currently focused on four critical needs, which are China, Japan, the United States, and South Korea, especially China is its biggest trading partner of Australia (Varrall et al., 2020). However, Australia needs to create more chances for Australian exporter to reach new market and export diversity. Australia can export their product diversly such as export welding machines to Africa, beauty products to Mexico, shipping wine to Jamaica, and mining services to Peru (Trade diversification of Australian exports, n.d.). By export diversity, and it helps Australia to diminish an economy's powerlessness to adverse external shocks (Hong, 2021, p. 2).
Moreover, Australia can move its export trade into the Indian market. As India has a large population (1.408 billion), which is slightly less than China, India is fast growing in economy, which sustains by a youthful, optimistic, and tech-smart consumer base. In the long term, Indian urbanization will raise the livelihoods and mechanical movement needs huge demand in numerous segments (Go west – the case for moving into the Indian market, n.d.). Australia has opened the lithium-ion battery market to India. Australia plans to export lithium to India to look to diversity away from a single marker as Australia only used to export lithium to China (Koshy, 2023).
youtube
Australia can refer to Canada as Canada is a great example which export diversification. Fifteen free trade agreements Canada has signed with 49 countries, including CUSMA, CPTPP, and CETA. Canada has invested in 36 foreign investment and protection agreements (FIPAs) to broaden overseas exports, and there are still many negotiations in progress around the globe for Canada to reach more countries (Canada, 2018). However, Canada is not only export to diversity destination, but it also exports product diversity. Canada exports coal, iron, copper ore, wood, canola, cereals, and fish which value at least $1 billion in export these products. It also exports aircraft, mineral fuels, precious metals, machinery, and pharmaceuticals. The export diversification strategy helps Canada to avoid uncertainties and reduce potential disruptions that Canada may face in future international trade (Canada, 2022). Therefore, Australia can learn from Canada to stable the economy from Chinese government sanction.

When it comes to savoring a fine glass of wine, Ireland has developed a burgeoning wine culture. Whether you're a restaurateur, a wine shop owner, or simply a wine enthusiast, finding the right wine supplier can make all the difference. In this article, we will explore the world of wine wholesalers in Ireland, uncovering the secrets to sourcing the finest wines for your business or personal collection.
1. Wine Wholesalers Ireland: A Gastronomic Haven
Ireland's wine scene has evolved significantly in recent years, with a growing demand for diverse and high-quality wines. Wine wholesalers in Ireland play a pivotal role in satisfying this demand by offering a wide range of wines to businesses and individuals alike. These wholesalers serve as the bridge between vineyards and consumers, ensuring that exceptional wines find their way to local wine shops, restaurants, and homes.
2. Wholesale Wine Ireland: A Booming Market
Wholesale wine in Ireland is not limited to just a few renowned regions; it encompasses wines from all over the world. From classic Bordeaux and Burgundy to New World favorites like Australian Shiraz and California Cabernet Sauvignon, Ireland's wholesale wine market caters to a diverse palate. Wine enthusiasts and business owners can access an array of options to suit their specific tastes and requirements.
3. The Vital Role of Wine Suppliers
Wine suppliers act as intermediaries between wineries and consumers, making it convenient for businesses to stock their shelves with a variety of wines. These suppliers often maintain extensive portfolios, ensuring that they can meet the diverse needs of their clients. 4. Choosing the Right Wholesale Wine Suppliers
Selecting the right wholesale wine supplier is essential for businesses looking to build a distinctive wine list or individuals seeking to curate a remarkable wine collection. Here are some factors to consider when making your choice:
Quality and Diversity: Look for suppliers who offer a wide selection of wines, including both well-known brands and hidden gems.
Reliability: Ensure that the supplier can consistently meet your demand and deliver on time.
Pricing: Compare prices among different suppliers to find the best deals without compromising on quality.
Expertise: Seek suppliers with knowledgeable staff who can offer guidance on wine selection and trends.
Storage and Handling: Inquire about the supplier's storage and handling practices to ensure the wines arrive in pristine condition.
5. Navigating the Wine Wholesalers Landscape
In Ireland, wine wholesalers come in various sizes and specialties. Some focus on organic and biodynamic wines, while others specialize in rare and collectible bottles. Hello friends, and a happy new FY to those who observe. Despite somewhat bizarro weather since the unofficial start of summer after MDW (some true June gloom, a real life take of John Carpenter’s The Fog (Canada’s Version), an abundance of petrichor), we’ve made it to a typically stifling July weekend for the season’s flagship holiday.
The past few years I’ve been up in Cambridge for the fourth, working on my tablescape game and caramelizing peaches (stone fruit hive, we ride!!). This year I’ll be in Litchfield, baking up a brown-butter buttermilk cake and seeing god at Arethusa. Same vibes, different ZIP codes.
But I haven’t sat down to write 3,000 words on going cottagecore or larping as a wasp. No. I am here to discuss my only area of expertise: how to have a perfect aperitivo hour. This morning I was reading DealBook and they had a short bit about the continued “resilience” of the Aperol spritz. Legally I’m not sure when a trend term-limits out and just becomes, I don’t know, a tradition? And while I am genetically bound to honor tradition (see: that whole episode of This American Life about Fiddler on the Roof), I also think there are so many products on the market that are superior to, or at least as fun to try, as Aperol.
As with most European-born habits, the existence of aperitivo hour is actually like half the age of our country (ok, Aperol was invented in 1919). As a person of Being Basic experience, my introduction to the Aperol spritz circa 2015 was a watershed in the expansion of my drinking habits. To be fair, the Brits do have their own pseudo spritz, the Pimm’s Cup, which I’ve been drinking since I was maybe 17??? But it’s absolutely English in the sense that it’s not nearly as refined as it thinks—we’re just guzzling a drink of gin and fruit salad??? I mean, do not get me wrong: it is great, but no one at Pitti Uomo is begging for cucumber punch and a cheeky cig. I’ve rarely had a Pimm’s Cup and not immediately been mentally transported to the gazebo in my uncle’s backyard—you have a spritz and you are in a European square, surrounded by cobblestones and impossibly chic women named Franca or Celeste. Both serve a purpose, but since this is our weekend of independence, let’s quit with the Brits and focus on the the spritz.
So I’m reading DealBook (listen we all know I love Matt Levine a lot, but he’s not devoting paragraphs to “everything is bitters” content) and I see this fun little chart about the increasing market share of Aperol in Campari’s annual sales:
Tumblr media
Naturally I got to thinking about my affinity for the Aperol spritz and its share in my personal beverage consumption. Around 2017, I was introduced to the Cappelletti spritz when they ran out of Aperol at Fairfax. (Demand for trendy drinks definitely outstrips supply in the West Village.) From then on, I became freakishly interested the possibilities of aperitivi and the vehicle of the spritz.
We all know that the Aperol spritz is basically the liqueur, sparkling wine, soda, and garnish. A perfect drink. Serve it with some olives, cheese, charcuterie—the Italians nailed la dolce vita. Given Aperol’s dominance, it’s led to a great resurgence of the category. Beyond Cappelletti (a bright, sweet, orangey liquer that is perfect full stop), there’s a wealth of aperitifs to explore:
Forthave Red: I have a bottle of this at home; based out of Brooklyn, Forthave has been doing fun stuff—gins, amaros, a coffee thing that I didn’t try but gave to a friend as an Xmas gift (I still haven’t had the nerve to drink an espresso martini, but she’s Australian and that’s like water to them)—but I stick to the red. It’s drier, closer to a Campari, with both the citrus and cherry flavors you can get from various aperitifs.
Faccia Bruto: Another BK-based company (I am borough-loyal). By now you’ve likely seen their products all over. They make that bright green imitation chartreuse that I have heard smells terrible but mixes well. Since none of us can ever get a table at Rucola this this the second best. It’s smoky and tastes like cherry - I like it for a stronger drink, it only needs a really light Prosecco.
Bruto Americano: Based in CA, this Bruto is also a Campari-adjacent substitute. My brother introduced this to me after our friend who lives in Cambridge introduced it to him. I think the last time we had a bottle at home in NJ we went through it pretty fast. I recall it wasn’t overpoweringly herby, and I think we went in a gin direction with it.
Cocchi Americano (red or bianco): Another option my brother brought into the mix. Bianco is less sweet and while it still has the floral notes it is more balanced with the taste of herbs (see below as well). I don’t have a bottle of either Cocchis at home right now, but they’re on the long list.
Berto Bianco: Let’s stick with biancos for a moment. Recently I’ve been doing a lot of vermouth and soda with a twist. I especially like biancos because they pair really nicely with citrus and are so light; perfect for a really oppressively humid day, or just an easy drink while you make dinner. The Berto is a household fave. It’s a Kermit Lynch import and I first discovered it at Formaggio’s in Cambridge so you know it has been given the snob stamp of approval. It’s bright but you can really taste the herbs.
Occhipinti Naturale (orange or red): Another vermouth! If you were one of the many people who, like me, got Occhipinti pilled after the Stanley Tucci Italy show came out, you got interested in the Occhipinti family. While Arianna makes the popular SP68 wines, another branch is busy making these vermouths. Every time I’m in Astor I wonder if this is the trip where I drop $55 on vermouth (I have yet to). But I really liked this the last time I had it. Made from moscato grapes, it has that more floral taste which can be really lovely on a humid summer afternoon.
Honorable mention also goes to: Lo-Fi Gentian, Contratto, and Select. You won’t mind displaying any of these bottles at home, either. I’m not trying to cut into Aperol’s market share, what’s nice about effective marketing is that the spritz pie is big enough for everyone to have a slice now. Honestly, I skip the Prosecco if I make anything at home, all you need is a twist of citrus and some seltzer and it’s just as refreshing (and easier to have a second round).
If you want to try these out as the Italians intended, find yourself a good spot to post up at during aperitivo hour. In BK, I like Aita for that. Manhattan has a ton of options: Jolene, Bar Pisellino (if you can get a seat), Dante, any place that is non-douchey and on a roof (are they mutually exclusive? Not my call, I’m a douche!).
Fix any of these up and, to quote Ariana Grande—right now I’m in a state of mind I want to be in, like, all the time. Once we get to summer my body needs to hear either yacht rock or Vampire Weekend at least once a day while I’m having seltzer. Make something effervescent, turn on Father of the Bride if the vibe is backyard, or Contra if you’re near a beach. Keep yourself rich in casteveltranos and whatever you do, don’t skimp on the mortadella, please. Enjoy the new freckles you’ve earned and happy Independence Day: welcome to spritz season.

Is the RCEP big? Yes. Is it meaningful? No. Liberal internationalists may take encouragement from the signing of a new trade deal—any trade deal—in the current global climate. But the RCEP is a straight tariff-reduction agreement at a time when base tariffs are already low, and countries don’t hesitate to impose punitive tariffs whenever it suits their foreign-policy objectives. The RCEP says virtually nothing about economic governance, and even its trade provisions are unenforceable. It avoids difficult issues like government subsidies, government procurement, theft of intellectual property, and investor-state dispute settlement. Labor standards aren’t even mentioned. Agricultural trade is largely exempt. The RCEP truly is a China-style trade agreement: platitudinous and ineffective.

[...]
That’s the hype. Now the reality. The world will have to wait 10 years to see those GDP gains: The PIIE’s estimates pertain to forecasts for 2030. Based on past long-term trend growth rates (and ignoring coronavirus effects), the world’s economy would be expected to grow around 40 percent over that period. The RCEP may add two-tenths of a percentage point to that figure, if you can find it in the rounding error. As for European Union-style integration, forget about a common market, freedom of movement, or even binding arbitration for dispute settlement. Despite 469 pages covering the liberalization of trade in services, China’s internet will remain closed.
Even the deal’s tariff reduction provisions should be taken with a large grain of salt. Reducing tariffs to zero sounds dramatic when considered in the abstract. Get down to details, and there’s much less to get excited about. For example, Japan’s single largest category of exports to China is machinery, at over $10 billion a year. China’s highest tariffs on Japanese goods in this category are currently just 10 percent, scheduled to reduce to zero by 2030 or 2035. But in the most important categories of machinery—industrial robots and machines used to print integrated circuit boards—the tariffs are already zero.
Similarly, Australia’s main export to China, iron ore, is already tariff-free. The RCEP will, however, eliminate China’s 3 percent tariff on coal next year. That might help—if China allows any of Australia’s coal to unload. Reflecting an undeclared Chinese embargo, Australia currently has 82 coal vessels carrying 8.8 million metric tons of coal and 1500 crew stranded outside Chinese ports, where they await clearances to dock and unload. Under the RCEP, China’s 14 percent tariff on imported wine will also be lifted next year, but in the meantime China has slapped a 200 percent levy on Australian wine—ostensibly as an anti-dumping measure, but in reality as an attempt to exert pressure on Australia to abandon its efforts to stem Chinese influence in the country.

Chapter 3: 14 Seconds (1)
Etienne Marcel de Provac Alexandre was satisfied. No, Etienne Marcel de Provac Alexandre was not satisfied. He could not be satisfied at all, because in reality he did not exist. It was James Alexander Malcolm MacKenzie Fraser who was satisfied that Etienne Marcel de Provac Alexandre, his alias, had also successfully completed this assignment. Neither the negotiations nor the conclusion of that special trade agreement with the Argentinians had caused any problems, so he was able to finish his job in the time allotted.

“Buenos Aires - Skyline” by maymuc
The success with which he had been able to complete his mission helped him to get over the inconvenience of his onward flight to Boston. It took more time for these 8,500 kilometres than for the return flight from Boston to Berlin. So he flew from Buenos Aires-Ezeiza shortly after eight in the evening first to Lima, where he had an 80-minute stopover at the Jorge Chavez International Airport. Then he was able to board a plane that took him from the Peruvian capital to Florida. He used the time on the plane to get some sleep.          When he arrived at Miami International Airport, he first had an extensive breakfast. Then he wandered around a bit, just to move his legs and afterwards he immersed himself in various wine magazines. While he was still reading and waiting for his connecting flight to Boston, an elderly gentleman approached him.          According to his legend, Jamie introduced himself as a French wine merchant who, on behalf of the Berlin-based company "In Vino Veritas - International Wines and Spirits", searched for new wines worldwide or brokered wine sales to partners.          This company - "In Vino Veritas" - really existed. And if anyone should have the idea to make further investigations about the firm, he would find nothing else but a flourishing wine and spirits trade, based in the German capital. Every time James Fraser mentioned this name or passed on his business card bearing this company’s name, he had to force himself not to smile. The irony of this name had made him laugh out loud when Ernst Neuenburger first told him about it. Because there was no truth in the wine that this company sold at all. On the contrary, this wine was nothing but deception. "In Vino Deceptio" would have been the correct name, but for very understandable reasons, that name had not been chosen. Ernst Neuenburger had acknowledged Jamie's loud laughter by saying:
"Irony is one of the best gifts to survive the challenges of this life."
The elderly gentleman who approached him at the airport in Miami made a harmless impression. He showed no great interest in the personal background of the person he was talking to, nor in his business relationships. It seemed as if he was simply trying to bridge his own waiting time by philosophizing with someone he liked about a topic in which both were interested. For Jamie, that was o.k.          It was due to his thorough preparation by Ernst Neuenburger's staff that Jamie was not only very well versed in European wines, but also in Australian, New Zealand, North and South American wines and their respective markets. On their behalf, he attended the Austrian Wine Academy and completed his training as a Wine Academician with the Wine Diploma, also known as the "International Wine Specialist". He was thus not only accepted into the "Club of Wine Academics", whose members were active in 41 countries around the world, but also acquired the prerequisites for the "Master of Wine" degree. Jamie was happy to take the trouble of this training, which not only helped him to fulfil his covert mission, but also raised his status in his real business life. The fact that his certificates and diplomas were issued in his alias name and in the name of James Fraser was also taken care of by Neuenburger’s staff.          Etienne Marcel de Provac Alexandre talked for almost an hour with the older American, who introduced himself as Bob Snider ("the one from Boca Raton, not the folk singer from Canada"), mainly about American, French and German wines. Then his flight was called and Etienne Marcel de Provac Alexandre said a hearty farewell to his interlocutor.

When James Fraser took his seat on the plane that was supposed to take him (finally!) to his next destination, he first wrote down the content of his conversation with "Bob Snider" and all the details he could remember about the man he had spoken to. The senior may have been harmless, but the mere fact that a stranger had come to speak to him obliged him to report this contact to his employer.          It was shortly after three in the afternoon when his plane landed at Logan International Airport. He took a taxi to the hotel where "In Vino Veritas" had booked the so-called "Boston Studio" for him. When he entered the room, he had to smile. The arrangement of the furniture in the various hotels around the world amazed him again and again. Here, it was the mixture of modern furniture and furniture trimmed on old that made him shake his head slightly. He would never really feel comfortable in such a mixture. But maybe it was better that way. The discomfort he felt in such rooms made him want to return home all the more. All that mattered to James Fraser was that the hotels booked for him had a fitness area that was open 24 hours a day. And that's exactly where he went after having a light dinner in the hotel restaurant that evening. One hour of workout and a long shower later he returned to his rooms where he went over the planning for the next day. Twenty minutes later James Fraser, alias Etienne Marcel de Provac Alexandre, sank into his bed and fell asleep contentedly.

Just a few blocks away from Fraser's hotel, Claire Elizabeth Beauchamp Randall was lying in the bed of her conjugal bedroom. Tears were streaming down her face and wetting her pillow. Although she had been lying under her warm blanket for more than half an hour, she trembled all over her body as if she were standing outside the house on a frosty winter's night without a coat.          Behind her lay another evening of arguments, insults and humiliation. Frank, her husband for almost 10 years, had left the house at some point in a rage. She knew that he would now be sitting and drinking in one of the nearby bars. If he picked up any woman who wanted to spend the night with him, he was never expected to come home soon. But if he left  the bar empty-handed, he would return ‘home’ and the night could turn out even darker.          Frank Randall could not find a woman that night who would voluntarily share a cheap hotel bed with him. He returned to the house he and his wife had once called ‘home’. That night, Claire Elizabeth Beauchamp Randall's worst fears came true.
The next morning, James Fraser woke up well rested and full of energy. His first course, after a brief visit to the bathroom, took him back to the hotel gym and then to the shower. Just as he was getting dressed for the new day, the room service brought the "Continental Breakfast" that he had ordered the night before. He had breakfast, reading on his tablet the various international newspapers whose online editions he had subscribed to. Exactly the peaceful and quiet morning time, as he appreciated it.          There were still four hours to go before his next appointment, a business lunch with “Paul Smith”. That man was also on Ernst Neuenburger’s payroll but had a completely different legend. Jamie had decided to use this time to have a look around the area of his hotel. The hotel's limousine service first took him to Paul Revere's house, and an hour later he was driven from there to the Old North Church. He would also have liked to visit the Museum of Fine Arts, but there was not enough time left and so he let his driver take him to the steakhouse where he should meet "Paul Smith".          When he arrived there, his "business partner" was already sitting at the table reserved for them. The men, who had never seen each other in person before, greeted each other like long-time friends. No one would have suspected that they knew each other only from photos that Ernst Neuenburger had placed quite innocently in the advertisements of a wine magazine some time before. They ate and drank and had lively conversations (and for those sitting nearby with ears too big) about current trends in the wine scene, prices, order quantities and shipping options. At the end of the extensive business dinner, they signed each other's contracts, both of whom knew that they would never experience any real economic development, and then toasted each other loudly with champagne to this glorious "business deal". Shortly before three o'clock in the afternoon, "Etienne" and "Paul", who called each other by their first names only and addressed each other as "brother", left the restaurant. Their sunny mood was in stark contrast to the dull, autumnal weather that swept over the city of Boston that afternoon.          Paul waved at a passing taxi and got in. Jamie waited for the limousine service, which was parked a bit far away, and due to the rather cold weather was quite happy that the car started moving in his direction immediately.          While he was still waiting, his eyes fell on an advertising flyer, which was driven across the sidewalk by a light wind. A name that was emblazoned on this flyer caught his attention. It was the name of a painter - Gerhard Richter. Jamie not only admired the paintings of the professor, who had taught painting at the Art Academy in Düsseldorf from 1971 to 1993 and whose works were among the most important and expensive of any living German artist. He was also fascinated by his life story, to which Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck had set a monument in his film "Never look away" (”Werk ohne Autor”). Without thinking for long, Jamie bent down and picked up the flyer. Still in the car he began to read. A small gallery not far from his hotel advertised an exhibition documenting Richter's life and work. Jamie put the flyer in his left breast pocket. He would love to spend part of his free evening visiting this exhibition. But now he had to hurry, because a small, private teleconference with the "managing director" of "In Vino Veritas" was scheduled for three o'clock in the afternoon local time, and he didn't want to be late.
While Etienne Marcel de Provac Alexandre reported to his boss in faraway Berlin about the successfully concluded contracts with "Paul Smith", Claire Elizabeth Beauchamp Randall made her way through her neighbourhood. Although the weather was unusually cold for the time of year, with 13.8 degrees Celsius, she could no longer bear to stay in her "home" after everything that had happened the previous night. At first she had thought of going to a nearby café that she visited regularly in the past. But the thought of having to sit on a hard wooden chair had made her refrain from doing so. Not far away there was also a church that she had visited repeatedly and the fact that the pews were furnished with soft seat cushions lead her steps hopefully towards this building. But her hope was to be disappointed. On the - closed - main portal there was a handwritten notice that on that day the doors of the church would stay closed due to a sudden illness of the sexton. Resigned, she turned around. Where could she go now? Her gaze fell on a small gallery that was open until six o'clock in the evening. That was still three hours away. Three hours in which she could look at the pictures there, or sit down in front of one of the works of art. Three hours in which nobody would approach her or ask her about anything. Three hours in which she could think about her next steps in peace. Somehow she had to find a way out of this misery. But she did not know how. Only one thing she knew with one hundred percent certainty: She would never return to Frank Randall. Not a single moment would she voluntarily stay in the presence of this monster again. She would rather put an end to her miserable existence. Claire had already thought about this once before. Back then, on 31 May 2018, when Longfellow Bridge was reopened after five years of repairs. But when she stood on top of the bridge, she was not sure whether a jump from there would bring the longed-for end to her agony. She had turned away and had returned. Returned to her life with Frank, whom she knew was cheating on her regularly. Returned to a life of lies. Returned to a life where she tried to numb all her pain with alcohol and pills. But if her experience had shown one thing, it was that no drug in the world could cover those wounds, especially not those that Frank had inflicted on her the previous night. Something had to happen.

“Ausstellung” by beludise          Twenty minutes before 4:00 pm Jamie had finished the conference call. Through one of the windows of his room he looked outside and noticed that the sky was darkening. A strong wind had come up and rain began to patter against the windows. But even if the thunderstorm was about to start, he would not be deterred from visiting the small gallery whose flyer he still carried with him. He dialed the number of the reception and ordered the limousine service again.          On the way to the lobby of the hotel he thought about how much he would have loved to get in touch with Jenny, Ian and the kids via video conference. But that was not possible. The chance of endangering himself, his job and possibly his family was too great. But it would not be long before he would finally see them again. The following evening his flight left and the following day, with a small detour via the headquarters of "In Vino Veritas", he would arrive back home and see them all again. He was already looking forward to it very much. For him, his family was the most valuable earthly possession and he wished for nothing more than to be able to start a family himself one day. Up to now he had always pushed that thought away. While he was still living in Scotland, the administration of his parents' estate and the political activities took up all his time and energy. Moreover, he would not have wanted any women to be the wife of a man who was a convicted traitor, being held in a London high-security prison and therefore not able to provide for his family. But more important than this was the fact that he had not yet met "the" woman with whom he really wanted to spend his whole life and with whom he wanted to start a family. When he entered the foyer and the receptionist told him that his limousine had just arrived, James Fraser had no idea that he was less than an hour away from that very encounter.          Claire Elizabeth Beauchamp Randall had entered the gallery, paid the entrance fee and accepted an exhibition guide, which she had immediately stowed in her handbag. She had wandered aimlessly through the rooms until she found a small bench in one of the back exhibition rooms. It stood in front of a picture showing an older man with glasses, standing in front of a reddish wall. But she only took note of it peripherally. Much more important in her present situation was that there was soft upholstery on the bench. Carefully she sat down on it and yet the pain went through all her limbs.
When Jamie's limousine stopped at the curb in front of the gallery entrance, it had already begun to rain in torrents. The sky had darkened to black and now and then a loud roll of thunder could be heard. Carl, the limousine driver, parked near the entrance and then quickly jumped out of the car with a large black umbrella bearing the logo and name of the hotel in golden letters. He opened the door on the rear passenger side and held the umbrella so that Jamie could get out without getting wet. The chauffeur accompanied him the few steps to the gallery, then quickly hurried back to the limousine where he would wait for the guest to return.          As soon as he had entered, Jamie was greeted by a friendly member of the gallery staff. He paid the entrance fee and received the exhibition catalogue. Then he slowly started his way through the exhibition. It took him about forty minutes to reach the back room of the gallery. Already from a distance he saw the well-known photo that showed the painter in front of his famous work "Wall". Only once had Richter had himself photographed in front of this work. This photo had then adorned the title page of the art magazine "art".

“Locken” by KRiemer         In front of exactly this two-meter by two-meter picture sat a petite woman, whose head was surrounded by an only slightly tamed, dark brown mass of curls. Carefully and anxious to make as little noise as possible, Jamie approached her with some distance. A few minutes passed, then he heard the woman sniffing softly. She opened her handbag and was obviously looking for a handkerchief in a hurry. Jamie reached into the right pocket of his jacket and pulled out a pack of Tempo tissues, which he opened and held out to the unknown woman.
"Please, take one of these.”          The woman turned her head up to him and looked at him with big amber eyes, red from weeping. Later, James Fraser would tell again and again how  those first 14 seconds, when he looked into the most beautiful eyes in the world, decided his future path of life.

Dwelling And dealing From the United Arab Emirates
Receiving toward the end of my vocation, I might been waiting for some pleasure in my daily life For a long time. My job Along with the Australian Authorities experienced improved following successive restructures to a occupation wherein I was not intrigued, not educated, educated or experienced. Confident, I coped with the operate, but I felt like a fish out of water. I desperately necessary a completely new way as I sat looking forward to a promised redundancy package deal.
When my spouse returned from a vacation to the Middle East and recommended I submit an application for a occupation from the UAE, I thought she was joking. She wasn't. In days I used to be hunting the web for career vacancies and found there have been hundreds. In just a thirty day period or two I had a work supply to work to be a Instructor in the School of Company at Al Ain Women's Higher education, certainly one of 13 Bigger Colleges of Technological know-how.
Obtaining by no means lived abroad right before, it was a huge final decision to go somewhere which has a vastly distinctive lifestyle, far from our youngsters and grandson. We determined that we might take the challenge and when it didn't workout, we could normally appear house.
Tumblr media
Our Arrival
We arrived at Dubai Intercontinental Airport at some ungodly hour after a 14 hour excursion from Melbourne, Australia. We had been instructed that we necessary to pick up our Short term Visas from an immigration desk, but when we observed the desk, the personnel was elusive, our first clue that almost everything will not run too in the UAE because it does in Australia. Inside an hour or so, we had passed through Customs, gathered our baggage and visas and left the airport with an exceedingly likeable, very well-dressed and perfectly-spoken Indian gentleman named Vijay. Vijay was a driver utilized with the Al Ain Colleges and we found out before long that he was the person who made issues take place For brand new staff... Mr Deal with It.
Immediately after signing my contract, I used to be handed two envelopes. 1 contained a sum of money to deal with our remain in a hotel for six days, one other experienced a cheque for 30,000 Dirhams for setup expenditures. We had no idea what a Dirham was actually well worth, nonetheless it appeared like a lot of money... and I hadn't accomplished every day's operate nonetheless.
Settling-In
We discovered Al Ain a pleasant oasis with two-lane carriageways divided by iron fences and date palm trees. It had been shockingly eco-friendly for a spot in the course of the desert, but all over the place we went, we noticed the municipality had taken excellent pride in supplying an attractive city with an outstanding method of roadways and infrastructure. It was Significantly nicer than our city in Australia and h2o was obviously plentiful.
Very apparent to us was the difference in gown Among the many populous who had been largely Indian, Pakistani, Afghani, Asians, and Arabs. Caucasians like us had been fairly scarce (about 3,000 amongst four hundred,000 population). We could inform wherever individuals have been from by their costume, if not their look. Even the Arabs have distinctive gown; readers from close by Oman have headdress that distinguishes them from the community Emiratis, but each use identical kandora (a lengthy white, dress-like robe).
Everybody we fulfilled was helpful, In spite of Recurrent language boundaries. There was no graffiti and litter was scarce. Properties ranged from ostentatious to crumbling brick box abodes for very low paid labour. Our accommodation in a huge housing complex was palatial by Australian benchmarks; 4 bedrooms and also a maid's room, 5 toilets, superior ceilings, along with a two car or truck garage. We couldn't feel that two persons were being to become accommodated in these kinds of massive accommodation.
The HCT's orientation for our 14 new workers was prolonged and in depth, the top orientation system I had ever skilled. In September I began educating with lessons in human means subjects for closing yr learners and computing and common small business for very first calendar year students.
The Worries of Teaching
For the very first handful of months I wondered irrespective of whether I had created the appropriate determination. I'd 140 learners in class teams of 20 aged amongst 19 and twenty five. Their English ranged from Practically incapable to satisfactory and many could not build a simple sentence. They had been apparently unaccustomed to study rather than pretty determined to understand. Lifestyle at higher education was an escape from their households.
My girls wore regular garb... black abeyas from neck to foot and black headdress. Many had only their eyes visible. Their names have been not just prolonged, but primarily new to me. I'd fantastic issues pronouncing some names and remembering who was who whenever they all seemed related; brown eyes, brown pores and skin and black garments. After I settled in, I started to understand that they have been a very immature ton in contrast with Australian teenagers. Lots of experienced never ever been into a shop; most had never ever spoken to males exterior their people; their familiarity with the whole world was quite slim fitting tightly in the strict bounds of their Islamic faith, culture and area in everyday life. That they had generally enjoyable, humorous dispositions, which was a lifesaver as I quickly developed an outstanding rapport with Many of them who in some methods jogged my memory of my own daughter now so far away.
This Odd fellow from Australia which has a funny accent who spoke speedy and infrequently utilized Australianisms quickly equipped in to his new surrounds and manufactured mates Along with the locals.
When operate was a considerable challenge wanting to inspire them, produce education and learning inside of a meaningful and comprehensible way, it had been also satisfying to are aware that sooner or later, what I had assisted them study, could be of worth to them and would, Maybe, assist the United Arab Emirates.

Earning Friends
Tumblr media
youtube
The trends best part of The entire adventure was The brand new close friends we designed with expats from Canada, England, Scotland, Ireland, the US, Jordan, Egypt, France, Turkey as well as Australia. With the expense of living so inexpensive, we dined out regularly and celebrated every birthday, nationwide working day, and sometimes dined out simply to share a food, a glass of wine and many superior company.
For the duration of our summer holidays we managed to travel around Europe, to Canada, Hong Kong and several other Center Japanese nations outdoors the UAE. We put in each week at Cyprus. Amongst our explanations for going to your UAE was to travel. We certainly did that and it was much cheaper than doing it from Down Underneath.
Making Income
Tumblr media
While my salary was about the same as I gained in Australia, there is not any income tax. In reality There exists rarely any tax at all, Whilst should you dine in a resort now, you fork out ten% services demand and 6% tourism tax. You will discover expenses for motorcar registration, driver's licences etc, but all have been much, less expensive than I might have compensated in Australia. Petrol was Filth affordable as was food stuff and Pretty much everything else, so we lived like kings and deprived ourselves of practically nothing, knowing this desire would inevitably stop.
Though we hadn't long gone to your UAE to earn cash, my spouse failed to operate and we did our perfect to invest it on journey, a brand new motor vehicle and living comfortably, we left with a great deal of funds, some new furnishings and tailor-created garments and so on. We did quite very well out of the UAE.
Conclusion
When you live in an isolated spot like Australia, it is straightforward to become Australia-centric and maybe a tiny bit arrogant. Going to other areas broadens your outlook and is particularly the working experience of the life span that every Australian really should just take. It's got a humbling outcome whenever you see nations that do not have drunks stumbling in regards to the streets, no graffiti, no petty theft, no Road brawls, and cleanse, very well-dressed individuals with satisfaction, not like A lot of Australia. Conversely, a couple of nations we visited reminded us how incredibly Blessed we've been to have the ability to get on a jet and return to Australia.

The future is bright for foreign wines in China
A milestone case for protected innovation wine freedoms in China will give a blast sooner rather than later for winemakers and exporters to the country.

By correlation, the whole EU represented 35% of Bordeaux sends out.
The CIVB expresses that notwithstanding the - 10% volume decrease in commodities to EU nations in 2015-2016, worldwide products in 2016 stayed stable with 270 million containers sent out at a worth of over €1.7bn. China has stayed the top commodity objective for Bordeaux by volume beginning around 2011, and by 2015, this additionally applied to esteem.
Fake extravagance products are large business in the country, with China and Hong Kong assessed to be the wellspring of 86% of the world's fake merchandise; the US Office of Trade appraises this huge rate is worth roughly $397bn. The degree of duplicating and utilization of wine market in China demonstrate certain that the Chinese market has popularity for the credible adaptations of these items.
Key decision on Chinese wine falsifying
It is famously challenging to gauge the size of fake markets, as by definition legitimacy - or deficiency in that department - isn't dependably confirmed. Australian wine essayist Jeremy Oliver was cited by the Week by week Times saying that the typical container of champagne in China was occupied multiple times, and that half of wines that retail for $35 or more in the nation are fake. One thing that isn't discredited is that in China, counterfeit wine is enormous business.

Chinese specialists tracked down for the CIVB against forgers in Shandong landmass - the country's fundamental wine-creating locale - as initially announced by Beverages Business. It follows long periods of more extensive worldwide protected innovation questions that showed little commitment of change. This choice starts a trend for the Chinese state working with winemakers to more readily police its wine market and break downward on the hoodlums and their unlawful fortunes from counterfeit items. Notwithstanding the CIVB, Australia's Depository Wine Homes has additionally gotten help from Chinese experts for the security of their brands in the market.
This move by Beijing will expand the allure of the Chinese markets for exporters. By safeguarding brands, China has shown that it upholds greater items, and a more secure market wherein to sell, purchase and polish off genuine wine.
