Holy shit that post where you mentioned the Avalon book series!!! I read those books growing up!! I ADORED them!! I think I still have them actually. I have the second editions – I didn’t even know they weren’t the original editions till now. I can’t imagine them without the pretty covers and illustrations tbh. The art is part of why I loved the series so much! And I’d never thought about it as a Western magical girl series but you’re kinda right! That’s such a cool way of looking at it. Anyways, thanks for the blast from the past :3

Ace, I'm happy to hear from you, and I'm ecstatic to hear you also have and love the Avalon books!

The genealogy of the series has always struck me as sort of epic because of the way it was born from Jewel Riders (and indirectly, Pern, which I also love)! There are several aspects of Jewel Riders that made it into Avalon, but Avalon also really became its own thing and it's genuinely fantastic. Also surprisingly dark at times and very well-written.

The reason I know the newer editions aren't the OG is because I originally read this bind-up of the first three books at some point in early high school?

All the original first editions sport these kind of photoshopped semi-realistic images of the three same models, with varying degrees of Lisa Frank color vibrancy as their covers. Some are slightly better than others. This is one of the less better ones imo.

I found the later editions I think in my last year of high school. Those had the more anime magical girl-esque covers, with the included illustrations and the compendium entries of the magical animals. I also realized very quickly that some of the slang and language was updated to be more modern (the notable one that always sticks out in my mind was when Ozy goes crowd surfing, the OG editions have him saying a quick "WOOHOO!" whereas the newer editions have him yelling a drawn-out "W00t!" and that change always makes me laugh) but more importantly, the older editions use a lot of harmful and tone-deaf references and terms for Adrian that the newer ones removed. I believe there was also a change or two added to some of Kara's insults that she slings around in the first several books, so she could still be clearly interpreted as a jerk early on without seeming like an irredeemable little snobby bigot, but I may need someone else with copies of the older editions to fact-check me on that one.

But yeah I also MUCH prefer the newer editions, for the art, the illustrations and all the extras put into them! Even if I'm not the target demographic anymore, those books have a very special place in my heart, and they do really have excellent nostalgia value!

JEWEL RIDERS

In some places it's called Starla and the Jewel Riders, but when I was growing up with it, it was Princess Gwenevere and the Jewel Riders!

It was originally conceptualized to be an animated adaptation for Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern book series, but at some point it deviated so far it became its own thing.

And you know what? It went on to be the basis and inspiration for Rachel Roberts's book series, Avalon: Web of Magic, which is also very much a Western magical girl series!

(using the newer covers because I prefer them to the older ones; they have more of a magical girl vibe to me, and the newer editions were also released with interior illustrations and updated/edited text that removed some questionable things said about our indigenous girl Adrian.)

I had to throw this in here to rep both series because the Jewel Riders and later Avalon all left strong impacts on me, and I feel like Jewel Riders especially gets forgotten about when the subject of Western Magical Girls comes up. (It's all but a lost media now; not many of the tapes of the series have survived, and it's never been restored, remastered and ported to blu-ray. Even most of the US releases of the DVDs were limited and are almost impossible to track down. I had to buy the full series/both seasons on DVD from Germany, and thank goodness I've got a region-free player.)

It seems to be getting a revival with a comic series though!!

Do ypu know of other examples of western Magical Girls? I was under the impression it was mainly a Japanese genre.

Avalon Web of Magic was my second favorite book series as a teen and I wanted to draw something for it for the first time in like, 10 years lmao. This is my interpretation of Adriane and Stormbringer!

I wanted to be Adriane SO BAD back then, and I had a Webkinz husky named after Storm! Lmk if any of y’all read this series too, I haven’t met many people who did

I have shown the bracelet I HAVE made inspired by Adriane’s bracelet in Avalon web of magic

My current little guy of a bracelet:

That was literally the ONLY time I’ve ever been able to find a satisfactory tiger’s eye paw bead with a horizontal opening. Every other one I encountered is vertical. I have looked thoroughly.

Before I found that one though I found THIS HEFTY BOY

I am currently realizing one toe is crooked :/ anyway, this is not a bead. It is simply a carved chunk of tiger’s eye. I have no idea how or if I’ll be able to make it into something, but even though her bracelet was described one way in the book, canon depictions in art have varied, giving me wiggle room. I think I might re-blog this and add some of the canon art, but anyway!

Something in between the two would probably be most accurate to canon, but I think it would be kinda funny to just make a huge bracelet too. After all, one of the manga covers has her wearing this

Repost from @alliebirdseed - Had a chance not too long ago to sit down and chat with the wonderful folks at @jewelridersarchive ! It was great getting to talk about Avalon again, the whole thing ended up making me nostalgic to visit the mages again. Emily, Adriane, and Kara were a big part of my life and creative career. I’m always gonna wish I’d known more and been better, but I’m so thankful for the experience.

Oh hey, btw- these drawings are fan art and are NO WAY official representations of these characters. I just wanted to have some fun and draw them again ^ ^
