New findings about 'old' materials informs our future and our past

A team of researchers led by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's Edwin Fohtung, associate professor of materials science and engineering, has combined expertise in mathematics and condensed matter physics with technological advances to discover new properties of magnetic ferroelectric materials.

In research recently published in MRS Advances, the researchers found that a class of defects, called topological defects, can offer a platform to explore a diverse range of novel phenomena. For instance, room temperature electronic conductivity has been reported at domain walls of insulating ferroelectric materials.

The challenge faced by the scientific community is the non-destructive three-dimensional imaging of such structures at the nanoscale. This was made possible thanks to a lens-less X-ray microscopy technique known as Bragg Coherent Diffractive Imaging (BCDI). The discovery of a lens-less X-ray microscopy technique has potentially far-reaching applications in computing, medical technology, and physics.

"With synchrotron sources that are basically emitted by particle accelerators, we can produce X-ray photons that are 10 billion times brighter than sunlight," said Fohtung. "We narrowly focus and control those X-ray beams for spectroscopy and imaging and, for the first time, we can observe small excitations on the nanoscale of solid state materials."

GOVERNMENT AIMING AT THE HOLISTIC DEVELOPMENT OF THE BAMBOO SECTOR

In view of the enormous potential of bamboo group of plants in contributing to rejuvenate rural economy of the country, the government both at the Central and States level has been focussing on the tapping the unexplored opportunities in the sector. Some of these initiatives are covered below:

i)National Bamboo Mission: Based on the report “National Mission on Bamboo Technology and Trade Development” published by the then Planning Commission in 2003, the Government of India (GOI) launched the National Bamboo Mission (NBM) in 2006. Multi-disciplinary and multi-dimensional in its approach, major interventions planned under it were to focus on research and development, plantation on forest and non-forest lands and to ensure the supply of quality planting materials. The main weakness of the scheme had been the absence of a linkage between the bamboo farmers and the industry and a strong value addition component.

ii)Restructured National Bamboo Mission: Restructured NBM was launched in 2018-19 as a component of National Mission for Sustainable Agriculture (NMSA) for implementation with the following objectives:

To increase the area under bamboo plantation. To improve post-harvest management.

To promote product development.

To promote skill development, capacity building, and awareness generation. The mission has its focus on development of bamboo in the north-eastern region and some other states. The key features of the mission included connecting farmers to markets and a direct subsidy of 50% given to farmers at Rs 1.00 lakh per ha.

iii)Amendment in the Indian Forest Act, 2017 The amendment of the Indian Forest Act in 2017, removing bamboo from the definition of trees was a landmark event for promotion of the sector, following which bamboo grown outside forests no longer needs felling and transit permissions.

v) National Mission of Bamboo Applications Under the National Mission of Bamboo Applications (NMBA) of the Department of Science and Technology, the North East Centre for Technology Application & Reach (NECTAR) has been creating a bamboo-based ecosystem and developing technologies, and promoting and commercializing them. NECTAR has also created a centre of excellence having zero waste-based complete sets of available technologies at the NECTAR-Bamboo & Cane Development Institute (BCDI), Agartala.

Making the Most of Rock and Roll

Determining strain in nanoparticles is tricky at the best of times. It’s even harder when the particles won’t stay still. This issue is particularly acute for Bragg coherent diffraction imaging (BCDI) of nanoparticles, where smaller particles are more likely to pitch and roll unpredictably because of radiation pressure. Now, Alexander Björling of Lund University, Sweden, and colleagues turn this uncontrollable motion to their advantage with an algorithm that can piece together the strain field for particles that rotate around unknown axes [1]. The method could make BCDI applicable to smaller nanoparticles than ever before.

In conventional BCDI, a coherent x-ray beam illuminates a nanoparticle from multiple angles sequentially. The diffraction pattern acquired at each angular position constitutes a slice through the sample’s Fourier representation. By combining and inverting these slices, researchers can gain a 3D picture of the strain-induced distortions and defects in the particle’s crystal lattice. For smaller particles, only very intense x-ray beams can produce the necessary diffraction patterns, but such beams jostle the particle even more severely.
