#BUT A COHESIVE TIMELINE CAN YA BELIEVE IT

Hi, i wanted to thank you for all of the starlet au blurbs you’ve been posting. I’m enjoying it so so much. Ooof such yearning. I can’t believe you don’t think you can do a full fic from it because you’re expanding on the universe a lot with all the asks. The slow dancing? Couch cuddles? Knowing looks over the dinner table? Group hangs just to be in each others vicinity? 🥺🥺😍
I think it's mostly just the difference in the way fics vs asks are written. Fics require a lot of structure and planning and transitioning to move from one thought to the next in a cohesive flow. The initial idea wasn't even for all of this, it was just a oneshot from the perspective of the person in the audience watching their loved one winning the award and reflecting on their life together. So all of these snippets sort of would've been in there, but in much more condensed chunks that required shifting in and out of present day and past timeline, touching on the emotions of the present and fluidly transitioning between those of the past, all while tackling the main theme of being so deeply in love and proud of their partner, while still being closeted and forced to hide that pride and affection. Having to shove all that love down into a look of benign amusement and vacant respect, while dangling off the arm of someone they barely even like just to cover up even more of that love.
In these asks, I can just blurb out the thoughts piecemeal without worrying about the overall structure 😅 which sounds lazy I realize but y'all I'm writing these while also working on 4 fics simultaneously like ya girl is already a full time passenger on the struggle bus
But regardless, I'm glad you're liking them, and honestly these asks are a fun break in the grind of actual fics for all those reasons above. So yeah, thanks for reading and the kind words, they do mean a lot, whether I accurately convey my appreciation or not

                    * Danny Gonzales Sentence Starters *
God, I’ve been watching Danny’s content since the vine era and he’s super fun & goofy in his youtube videos, so I’ve compiled a list of dialogue starters from a couple different videos he’s uploaded.
As always: These have been modified for cohesive and sensical use. Feel free to change anything within these that you see fit to make it work for your muse & the receiver’s muse !
Recommended For: Any muses/plots/timelines.
Trigger Warnings For: Swearing & slight innuendo.
“ I keep seeing this dude on tiktok who’s pretending to be a vampire, using special effects ... and, like, everyone believes him ! “ “ ... or you know, everyone would be thirsting over him because he’s a boy, and ... he’s not ... wearing a shirt. Or, he is -- he’s just wearing it wrong. “ “ ‘ He could actually be a vampire & no one would know ! ‘, uh, no, he couldn’t. He could not ... because vampires aren’t real ! “ “ Imagine if vampires really were real and this is how we found out ? From sorta like a thirst trappy tiktok of a guy just casually being like: ‘ Oh, I heard we were showing off our teeth ... Here’s mine ! ‘. “  “ What if they had to put this picture in every history book form now on ? " “ So, this is when we found out vampires existed, they’ve been around for thousands of years and we didn’t find out until this guy made a tiktok video without his shirt on ... because he wanted to show off his teeth. “  “ Still to this day it is the only evidence that we have of vampires, but I mean, you can’t dispute this ! “  “ Look, I don’t believe this yet, alright ? I’m not that stupid ... but, I swear to god, if you do this one more time -- I will believe you, I’m serious ! Post one more edited tiktok of you showing your fangs & I will spend the rest of my life believing vampires are real. “ “ ... and it’s not because you’re cute either; I don’t wanna kiss. I’m gonna spend the rest of my life trying to track you down and impale you with a wooden stake ! “  “ I like that he’s not just a vampire, he’s a cocky vampire ! “ “ Watching everyone I love die time and time again because I’m an immortal ageless being ... drifting through time becoming further convinced that nothing matters and life doesn’t mean anything because I sold my soul to the devil 200 years ago ??? Uh, it’s ya boy ! “  “ I like to think about this one and what it would look like without the effect. “ “ He jumps over his house ... so, don’t skip leg day ! “  “ I know a lot of people commenting on these tiktoks saying they think they’re real are either joking, or are literally one year old. ” “ I don’t think his intention was to deceive people into thinking vampires were real ... “ “ Welcome back to another episode of how to be a bad boy ! “ “ Don’t worry if you’re not a boy, because this applies to anybody ! You don’t have to be a boy to be a bad boy ! “ “ Bad Boys ... who doesn’t love a bad boy, am I right ? I mean, they’re strong, masculine, angry, violent ... what’s not to love ?! “ “ His IG stories are full of the worst, most painful to watch cringe tiktoks from super obscure accounts. “ “ I’ve noticed this uptick in bad boys. “  “ That’s a great question: Why do good girls like bad guys ? “ “ I mean, look at this dude: He’s clear bad as all heck ! “  “ One moment, you think he’s a doctor and the next moment he’s just a normal dude ? In normal clothes ? What the fuck happened to him ?! “ “ This is a bad boy right here guys, this doctor doesn’t play by the rules. “  “ I would not want this doctor to be my doctor cause he is a bad boy ! You can tell because his hair isn’t as neat as it was when he was just a doctor ... and he’s wearing a ring with a skull on it ! “ “ It’s possibly the skull of one of his patients who died because he was too busy making tiktoks to operate on them. “ “ What’s the opposite of swooning ? I just did the opposite of whatever swooning is ... “  “ Okay, so it looks like there’s this nerd and we’re roleplaying as his girlfriend, who left him or something to be with somebody else ? “ “ What could you possible have to show me that could change my mind now, you little dweeb ... that I used to date for some reason ... ? “ “ Now he’s some kind of ... kind of ... well, I don’t know what he is, but he looks different now ! “ “ Alright, it’s time to make her jealous ... “ “ Well ... look at me now. I’m a vampire ... so ... I bet you’re jealous of that ! “ “ Oh, you think I want you back now ? Well, I got news for you, bitch: I’m immortal & I can turn into a bat ! “ “ What is he at the beginning ?! An old man or a very stressed teen ?! “ “ Is this a tiktok or is this the plot of an early 2000s rom-com ? ” “ One day his silly old ass tripped into the fountain of youth ... “ “ I’ve fallen for you, ( and I can’t get up ). Coming this summer ! “  “ Did you just dress like an idiot all the time on purpose ? “  “ You think I’m a wrinkly old man ? Guess what bitch - I’m a greaser form the 1950s ! “  “ Are you just intentionally looking like shit to get her to break up with you ? “ “ ... Because nothing wins back girls like saying something badass really quietly into a microphone because you’re scared someone will you ! “  “ The bad boys on tiktok have values ! ... and one of those values is protecting women. “  “ He looks like he’s got absolutely no joint mobility ! “ “ Everyone knows that the badder the boy you are, the more your walk looks like a fuckin’ whomp, from Mario 64 ! “ “ It’s funny how this whole video was about respecting women, but then his girlfriend gets in the way and he’s like: ‘ Fuck off, babe ! I gotta go fight this asshole ! I have to protect your honor, babe. So, how ‘bout you get the fuck out of my way, you dumb bitch ’. “ “ This would be kind of menacing, if this dude wasn’t wearing the cutest tiny little cast on his pinky finger ! “  “ Dude are you really in any condition to be protecting women ? “  “ What the fuck ? This dude just barked ?! “  “ If you push a girl, you can catch these hands by all means. “  “ You couldn’t think of any less gruesome way to take care of this ? “ “ What are you ? A horror villain form the 80s ?! “ “ I don’t know what it is about grown men lip-syncing and then punching the air because they’re so mad ... “ “ The phrase ‘ asswhoopin’ in the parking lot ‘, I don’t know it just sounds like you’re not beating someone up, you’re just ... spanking them. “  “ You’re just, like, at the club - minding your own business and you accidentally bump into the girl standing next to you, and her boyfriend puts his hand on your shoulder and you turn around, and it’s fuckin’ Justin from Wizards of Waverly Place ... wearing what can only be described as the upper body version of a loin cloth ... ? “  “ He’s got that ‘ whispering because I’m recording a tiktok in my room and don’t want my parents to know ‘ vibe. “  “ Then he strangles you ? Is ... is that how you make a deal with the devil ? “  “ Is this, like, a sexual thing, or -- ? ... No one knows, it’s just what I do ! “  “ ... What I don’t understand is this creepy laugh followed immediately by that very weird moan. “  “ In what way is this supposed to be appealing to me as the viewer ? ”   “ I just feel like if I were a girl ... If that’s what this is guy is into: I mean, girls or guys ... demons or imps ? I don’t know what he’s into ! “ “ I feel like if we got into any small argument, he’d Darth Vader my ass ! Strangle me and then lift me up in the air by my throat ... just because I didn’t want to go to Chili’s™ ... “

Nerdy’s Long Overdue MCU Canon Rewrite / Complete Timeline Verse by Verse
Okay so if you’ve been following me long enough, you’d know that my various verses are essentially Frankenstein’ing of various movies and shows and games. They’ve always felt a bit disjointed and wobbly and that’s because I never really comitted to having my own canon proper I always tried to keep it MCU-focused while also having my cake and eating it too lmfao. WELL NOT ANYMORE. Time to bend the MCU canon to my will.
So there is a LOT to get through so I’ll be categorizing it all based on Peter’s school years. Also no specific mentions on relationships and other characters unless it is necessary to the Narrative, because a lot of that tends to be extremely thread and partner based, and I don’t want to box people in by ‘canonizing’ what their character does in my timeline, you know?
ANYWAY ON WITH THE SHOW:
Personals do not reblog I’m just forewarning you
HIGH SCHOOL:
Freshman Year
-DECEMBER OF 2015 -Gains his powers after being bitten by a radioactive spider during a class trip to Doctor Curt Connors’ lab in Empire State University. -Spends the Christmas Break discovering and learning about his abilities, makes his First Suit out of some old pajamas.
-JANUARY 2016
-Being a kid and wanting to make a quick buck with his abilities, he enters a wrestling competition against Crusher Hogan.
-It’s the classic wrestling origin. Peter gets swindled out of money, a burglar steals money from the fight manager, Peter lets the Burglar go out of anger and spite for the manager. -Uncle Ben is murdered, Peter goes after the assailant and is horrified to discover it is the same Burglar he had let go earlier.  -When you do the things that I can, but you don’t, and then the bad things happen, they happen because of you. -Guilt stricken, he realizes the importance of Power and Responsibility and starts to fight crime, initially stopping small crimes, petty robberies, etc.
MARCH TO JUNE 2016:
-Rumors of an Insectoid-Man spread quickly throughout the underworld, it is initially believed to be a Lie made by crooks who want to dodge blame, but more and more YouTube videos of a man in a red and blue pajamas doing extraordinary feats quickly kills that possibility. -At the recommendation of his teachers, Peter starts interning at Connors’ Lab in ESU, it allows him to get a closer look at the kind of spiders that bit him, and leads him to discover that the irradiated spiders are a project Connors is working on under the funding of Oscorp. -During his crime fighting, he unknowingly halts several of The Big Man’s jobs.  -Frequently swings into and stops the crimes of Alex O’Hirn and Flint Marko. -He runs into his first Out of the Ordinary Bad Guy when he ends up fighting Stilt-Man, instead of going for his legs he just punches him out cold.
CIVIL WAR INCIDENT - JUNE 26TH 2016
This is where the first of the several big canon rewrites comes in. For starters, the Airport Fight happens in New York instead of Germany, and Tony does not recruit Peter for his cause or give him the new suit. What happens is as follows,
-Peter sees the news of The Winter Soldier’s attack on United Nations. ( For the purposes of this rewrite, let’s say Bucky gets extradited to the U.S. for interrogation and trial and he is held in the same SHIELD base Steve woke up from his coma or whatever ) -Peter and Ned argue about Spider-Man not going for Stilt-Man’s legs during their fight. -Hearing the news of JFK suddenly closing down and rumors of people spotting ‘Very Serious Government People’ , Peter puts the two and two together and leaves abruptly, heading to the Airport in hopes of ‘Auditioning’ for the Avengers, because that’s what you do when you are a 15 year old with superpowers. -Beginning of the airport fight and Steve and Tony’s argument happens the same, majority of the fight happens the same way. -Peter, as Spider-Man, jumps into the fray during the Line Up. He immediately swings to Tony’s side because Iron Man is the hero he idolizes the most at that point in time. -Tony and Peter banter, with Tony not wanting a kid there and Peter being a dumbass kid and wanting to impress Tony. -Peter does not fight Steve, he is only there to take down Bucky and Prove His Mettle as a superhero. -The entire sequence with Bucky and Sam versus Spidey happens as shown.  -Seeing Giant-Man appear and grumbling himself about the whole Stilt-Man argument still, Peter realizes he can go for Scott’s legs to take him down and does the whole AT-AT takedown move. -Gets knocked back onto the ground like in the movie, Tony goes to check on him to make sure this dumbass kid didn’t get himself killed, seeing he is alive and well, Tony is impressed but he tells Peter to go home. -Bedroom scene occurs as a post-credits scene, it becomes less about Tony recruiting Peter to his side and more about figuring out what the deal with this Spider-Man Kid is, leaves the suitcase with the Stark Suit as he leaves, says they’ll be in touch.
HOMECOMING - END OF AUGUST - SEPTEMBER 23RD 2016 / SOPHOMORE YEAR
-Peter turns sixteen in August 10th. -The movie happens largely the same -a Film by Peter Parker and the Limo Conversation naturally doesn’t happen considering the afromentioned changes to Civil War.  -Tony does not save Peter from drowning, Peter gets out of the lake on his own.      Reason for this change is that this scene makes Tony way controlling and uncaring towards Peter? Which, compounded by the following scenes, really paints Tony in an awful light. It also makes it more impactful that the next time, and thus the first time, Peter properly interacts with Tony since Civil War is in the direct aftermath of the Ferry Fiasco when Tony comes to collect the suit. They are then both valid in their arguments in that Peter has let the Stark Suit’s abilities get to his head and act way reckless than he should, ( Stark Suit thus serving the same narrative purpose as the Symbiote Suit ) but it also makes Peter valid in that Tony has been completely ignoring Peter ( at least on the surface / from Peter’s point of view ) until it was too late. -Rest of the movie unfolds as shown. -Toomes is Peter’s first proper Super Villain.
OCTOBER 2016 - MAY 2017
-Toomes’ arrest causes his Alien Weapons empire to fracture and for alien tech to be more readily available to the highest bidder ( In the movie it seems like Toomes really wanted the sales to be more gradual and under the radar ) -Shocker breaks away from Toomes’ crew and ends up joining the Enforcers, working for Hammerhead, who works as the Right Hand Man for The Big Man. -Spidey’s encounters with the Enforcers leads Peter to learn about the existence of The Big Man. -Phineas Mason is still at large, Peter dubs him ‘ The Tinkerer behind Toomes ’ toys ’ because he does not directly know who he is but highly suspects his existence.  -A Mysterious Benefactor starts bankrolling experiments for Super Mercs, armed with the alien tech, with the, initial, goal of ‘distracting’ Spider-Man from the Finer details of The Big Man’s organization (if he’s too busy fighting Super Villains, he’d be too busy to stop Illegal Shipments ya kno). -Alex O’Hirn undergoes the procedure to become the Rhino, having the experimental alien armor fused to his skin, and only able to perspirate through his face. It is due to this fact Peter manages to take him down the first time, ‘ overheating ’ him to get him to pass out. -During this incident, Spidey gets Rhino to spill the identity of the Big Man, one L. Thompson Lincoln, aka Tombstone. -It is also during this time Spidey has his first run-in with Captain George Stacy. -He goes to visit Tombstone to tell him he knows about him, promptly gets his ass kicked and high-thwips it out of there.
THANOS INCIDENT - MAY 2017
Welcome to the Big Canon Rewrite Number Two, here, Peter does not go to Titan. First part of his appearance happens as shown, with Peter seeing the giant Q ship up in the sky and sneaking out of the bus to help Tony and co. fight the Aliens, but after losing Strange to the ship’s tractor beam, he stays on Earth and helps with the clean-up in the aftermath. Maybe even bumping into a few Defenders while doing so wink wink nudge. As a result, he does not get the Iron Spider-Man suit, sorry Marvel’s toy department.
ENDGAME - DATE UNKNOWN
Okay here’s the deal, it literally does not matter how long it has been since they’ve been blipped. Literally anyone important to a plot has been Conveniently Snapped, only reason there is a five year jump is so they can age Cassie so she can become Stature in Ant Man 3, and have Tony have a family for the Drama of it. Literally that’s the only reason, there is a reason why Far From Home makes a joke out of it. So for the purposes of sanity, let’s just say they were snapped throughout the duration of the summer and they conveniently get brought back at the beginning of the school year.  -This means Peter is a part of the Final Fight but in his Stark Suit instead of the Iron Spidey suit, he also does not activate Instant Kill (why the FUCK would he, Russos!!!!!) I don’t care either way about the hug, so that’s up in the air, but he definitely does not cling onto Tony’s body lmfao nah. It is nevertheless very upsetting and near-traumatic for him to see someone die in front of him (again!)
JUNIOR YEAR
SEPTEMBER - DECEMBER 2017
-Peter is now seventeen. -And he’s got PTSD like a motherfucker lmfao. -Getting turned into dust and coming back has everyone rattled, so the Criminal Underworld is working overtime. - Captain Stacy comes to Midtown to teach about Criminology, and also to keep an eye on his kid considering the circumstances. -Silvio ‘Silvermane’ Manfredi, head of the Maggia, is also due to be released on parole by the end of the year, so various Mob factions are trying to prepare themselves. -As a result, schematics to make more Rhino-like people hit the market, Spidey and O’Hirn actually end up teaming-up together to destroy the schematics, resulting in a three way fight between them, Hammerhead, and the Manfredi mob.  -Hammerhead’s recent repeated failures shakes Tombstone’s faith in him. -The Enforcers get fancy schmancy Combat Enhancement Suits, courtesy of The Tinkerer, and Spidey has to deal with them. -Hammerhead stops the Enforcers’ getaway attempt in secret, signaling a rift between him and Tombstone.  -Manfredi is released right before Christmas.
JANUARY 2018
-The Gang War(tm) begins in full force. -Spidey’s hands are full navigating the powder keg of a situation, with Tombstone and Manfredi vying for control, with Hammerhead planning something behind the scenes.
FEBRUARY 14TH 2018 -Hammerhead arranges a meeting of the factions in Metropolitan Opera House, without Tombstone’s knowledge. -Once revealed, Tombstone does not take kindly to this disobedience. -Hammerhead reaches his breaking point and attacks Tombstone. -Silvermane decides to take both of them out to eliminate the competition fully.  -Silvermane, in a mechanical combat suit of his own (because comics bebey) attacks Tombstone and Hammerhead, resulting in a three way fight. -Spidey arrives and has to fight the three of them.  -After a long and exhausting battle, Spidey prevails, Silvermane is arrested once again, L. Thompson Lincoln is publicly revealed to be The Big Man of Crime, and Hammerhead is nowhere to be found. -Tombstone posts bail, but Captain Stacy tells Spidey that his crime empire is crippled and there is a power vacuum. One that a certain Wilson Fisk will take advantage of soon.
LATE FEBRUARY - JUNE 2018
-Spidey is basically doing clean-up duty in the aftermath of the Gang War(tm) -He is trying to find where Hammerhead is, but comes up empty. -All Spidey can find are the rumors that he went back to his old employment under the Maggia. -He takes down last of the known Manfredi fronts before preparing for his Europe trip (it’s the restaurant fight from the FFH trailers)
FAR FROM HOME - JUNE 2018 -Happens largely the way it is depicted in the movie -He does not have the Iron Spider Suit still, in case you forgot. -Smaller differences being Peter being pegged the ‘New Iron Man’ less because of his ‘Mentorship’ under Tony and more because people are just fucking desperate for a new Big Hero, which is where Mysterio comes in.  -He sees Ben’s grave instead of Tony’s during the Mysterio Fun Tour of Trauma, Zombie Iron Man still comes out of it tho because Symbolism ( not because Tony is a new Uncle Ben figure, but because it represents Peter not always being able to save everyone, even though Tony’s condition was out of his hands.) -BIGGEST DIVERGENCE: Unless plotted, I generally DO NOT recognize Peter’s identity being outed. There are two options / variations I could go with                     -Peter IS claimed to be Spider-Man, but after a Movie’s worth of adventures, he enlists the help of either a skrull or Chameleon (Dmitri the Bus Driver in FFH) to have Spidey appear in the same room as Peter and re-establishes his secret identity.                     -Mysterio just brands Spider-Man as a menace and that’s that.  In any case, this leads to..
-This in-between point is where the main verse is currently set.
SENIOR YEAR
SEPTEMBER - DECEMBER 2018
-Peter turns eighteen. -Branded as a menace, Spider-Man is now disliked and hunted by most authorities. -Captain Stacy, however, does not believe Mysterio and is one of Spidey’s few friends still left in the police force.  -He also makes numerous remarks towards Peter and Spider-Man that suggests he figured out his secret identity on his own.  -Anastasia Kravinoff arrives in New York with the intention of Hunting Spider-Man.  -At the same time, Mac Gargan is hired by The Mysterious Benefactor to undergo the Super Merc procedure to hunt Spider-Man.  -Kraven has her first encounter with Spidey, in which she manages to tear off a piece of his suit that she later uses to track his scent.  -Mr Harrington’s class trip to Bronx Zoo is promptly ruined when Kraven shows up tracking Spidey’s trail.  -The publicized skirmish in the Zoo attracts the attention of Gargan, now in a mechanical suit with a long, poison-tipped tail, stylized after Gargan’s favorite arthropod, which easily earns him the nickname ‘Scorpion’. -Spidey manages to escape, but barely.  -It all comes to a head in New York Botanical Garden is a totally epic final showdown. -Maybe Rhino gets involved too and it’s a full on Survival of the Fittest in the jungle. -Peter gets stung by the poison tail but manages to shake it off. -He gets speared in the thigh at least once during the battle. -Scorpion and Rhino get imprisoned in the Vault, Kravinoff gets arrested as well but she posts bail and gets out scot free because she’s got Powerful Connections(tm)
JANUARY - MAY 2019
-Doctor Connors achieves a breakthrough on his Cross-Species formula -He tests it on himself, and initially achieves great results by regrowing his arm. -Over the following weeks, however, more and more side effects start to show by patches of green scales on his skin, increased aggression and hostility and occasional lapses in intelligence. -Around March, he has his first Lizard transformation. -Peter suspects it’s Connors, but he does not figure it out until April.  -With each transformation, Connors stays as Lizard longer and longer. -I am basically ripping off the plot of the first TASM movie. -Peter and Gwen manage to synthesize an antidote.  -Connors has a similar goal as to his movie counterpart, but he decides to Unleash the Lizard virus on top of Empire State Building. Because a) King Kong reference with Lizard climbing the antenna, and b) Connor going from Empire State University to Empire State Building, it’s a fun progression.  -Spidey and Lizard fight on top of Empire State, with George Stacy coming to Spidey’s aid. -Spidey manages to administer the antidote to the Lizard, reverting him back to Connors who retains no memories of his actions as the Lizard. -Stacy gets injured by Lizard and before succumbing to his injuries, tells Peter to keep Gwen safe and ‘out of it’.  -Lizard’s true identity remains unknown to the public, but Connors decides to relocate his family to Florida to get away from the noise of the city. Before leaving, he tells Peter to seek out his old colleague Otto Octavius if he wants to further his studies.
END OF MAY 2019
-Peter Parker graduates Midtown School of Science and Technology.  -He applies and is accepted by Empire State University. Peter does not consider any other college as he wants to stay in New York for obvious reasons.

Experiment uses bio-electricity generated by Electro, but it goes ‘wrong’ and Marko is turned to dust. -Sike he can control it, he’s Sandman now.  -Spidey and Sandman fight, once Peter learns of his motives, he tries to get him to stop. -Marko is told to stop the movement of an oil tanker so the new Big Man can siphon it dry. -Spidey and Marko fight on the tanker, tanker explodes, Marko expresses remorse for he only wanted the money and not to hurt anyone, so he helps usher the ship crew to safety and contains the explosion, turning into glass due to the heat.  -Sandman is presumed deceased, but he survived and just blew away gently in the wind. -Maybe he’s out there somewhere who knows.
JANUARY - MAY 2021 -Norman discovers Harry’s Green Usage, he gets Harry to stop. -Stupid boy drinking the Green instead of inhaling it like his dad did I mean what -Harry discovers the Green exacerbated the progression of his illness. -Spidey meets Yuri Watanabe, who is the lead detective and later Captain who is after the Big Man and the Mob. -Peter discovers the identity of the actual new Big Man, it’s Wilson Fisk, quickly filling the power vacuum after Tombstone’s defeat. -Spidey and Fisk fight, with Fisk seriously injuring Spidey and him having to swing away.

-Pete turns twenty two. -He spends most of the year working on his thesis like a good nerd. -Spidey is occasionally tipped toward Fisk fronts by a Mysterious Goblinafactor -Norman wanted to bust into the Crime Scene being the Goblin and taking over the Big Man’s turfs but Fisk beat him to it so he has to be content with just being the Mayor for the time being -Goblins am I right. -He’s also the one who supplied Silvermane with his own armor. -Also the one who maaaay have broadened the rift between Hammerhead and Tombstone by sabotaging Hammerhead’s plans behind the scenes. -He is the Big Man behind the Big Men if you will. -Anyway back to Peter -Turns in his thesis, graduates ESU. Strength of his thesis is what convinces Otto to have Peter also come into work with him in the Brand New Octavius Industries. -Norman is content to just play the Mayor and let Fisk be as Spidey and Yuri gather more and more evidence.
POST-GRAD / INSOMNIAC’S SPIDEY STUFF  -Events of the game happen broadly the same -Fisk is taken down, Mister Negative enters the scene, Devil’s Breath Incident happens and Spidey gets his ass thoroughly kicked by Sable, etc. etc. -Otto turns into Ock.  -Ock facilitates the Vault Breakdown (MCU got a Raft up and running and it ain’t in NYC sooo, Vault it is) and forms the Sinister Six. -However instead of Vulture being part of the Sinister Six, it’s Kraven. She’s back for a proper rematch.  -Unless plotted, May does not die from exposure to the virus, she just gets really messed up and hospitalized, but she gets cured later. -Events of the DLC happen largely as shown as well, Hammerhead techs himself up, Yuri goes Wraith, Sable kicks Spidey’s ass again but also grows a Heart. Aw.  -Osborn resigns in disgrace, but as luck would have it, Fisk and Li’s arrest leaves a nice Goblin-shaped hole in the criminal underworld for Gosborn to fill. -Norman discovers Harry’s ‘cure’ is sorta sentient.
WILL GORMAN GOSBORN FINALLY FACE OFF WITH SPIDER MAN? WILL SPIDEY LEARN THE REAL MASTERMIND BEHIND EVERYTHING? WILL HARRY GET GOOPED? WILL PETER FINALLY DISCOVER WHY KIDS LOVE THE TASTE OF CAP’N CRUNCH?
ALL THAT AND MORE, NEXT TIME ON, THE SPECTACULAR ADVENTURES OF THE AMAZING SPIDER MAN!

I can’t sleep so I’m just thinkin’ about my range of Pokémon romantic F/Os. This series has meant so much to me for so long, and I know F/Os from that source make up a decent portion of my list. I’d feel more embarrassed about it if I didn’t make it abundantly clear that Pokémon is one of the most pervasive influences in my life from an exceedingly young age.
I just. I dunno. I find my collection of Pokémon series F/Os so interesting.
I’m just gonna ramble a bit.
I’m going to talk in Generational order, because my 1am brain couldn’t decipher a more cohesive timeline if it tried.
Giovanni is a funny one. As a kid, his character in the show intimidated me a little. But I really loved Team Rocket on some level. They were my first Pokémon villain organization, and with the Gen III games having Aqua and Magma, I decided pretty early that Team Rocket was my team. I had a stint in Magma since when I was young, I thought I’d specialize in Fire types, but eh it didn’t stick. No team really stuck nearly as much until Team Skull! So I had a lot of time for my intimidation from Giovanni to evolve into a fearful respect, to a mild devotion… by the time I played Let’s Go! and Ultra Moon, I was more than a little excited to see him in game. As in, I would quietly cheer when he appeared on my screen, in some weird giddy manner. It was only a matter of time before I realized I was crushing hard.
Steven Stone (he has a full name so more often than not I use it when referring to him) probably didn’t make the biggest impact on me in the original Gen III games? Hoenn was my favorite region for a while (in part due to pre- “Hoenn confirmed” hype), but he didn’t have a huge role in Ruby/Sapphire. Maybe I noticed him first in Emerald? I wish I could remember my real first inkling of crush on him, because I just remember when I played Omega Ruby… I was already obsessed with him. He showed up for the first time in game and I squealed. I spent the whole game seeking him out and already making romantic passes at him in my around-19-year-old head.
I am counting Grovyle for this, but it bears repeating that my S/I for the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon games is a Pokémon too. Those Mystery Dungeon games enamored me as a teen! I got to BE! A POKEMON!! So I probably got Explorers of Time/Darkness for DS not long after it released in 2008. I was so excited to have Gen IV Pokémon to be and battle and recruit, ugh, this game meant so much to me. I will always remember being part of Wigglytuff’s Guild super fondly. And like, as I am super susceptible to mental role play, putting myself in my characters shoes (or lil toe beans I guess) has always been second nature for me. So a dashing Grovyle just jumped into my silly life and was the most honorable and misunderstood character and I am not even joking when I say I fell for him in my first playthrough. And I’ve played through it a lot. I was always jealous of Celebi. I hate every Dusknoir I see to this day. *chefs kiss* Good game.
Gen V is “oops all F/Os” Gen, where to even start..
Just kidding, N is the obvious choice to start for me. He was love at first sight. He just, ugh, he cares about Pokémon SO MUCH. I literally don’t know how to even expand on this. He literally rode the Ferris Wheel with the player character in the game, and I WASNT supposed to interpret that as a date? Wack. It was a date. I love him so damn much. Next question
Elesa comes next because I’ve always thought she was stunning. I mean, duh I guess, she’s canonically a model. Also, Electric types are in my top 3, behind Fairy and somewhat tied with Fire, so she was a woman after my own heart. Her Emolga kinda wrecked my team and I respect that. Also, she loves puns. So again. Woman after my own heart. The only reason she’s still listed as Crush and not as Dating is because she intimidates me. She’s out of my league and I worry she’d only see me as a friend. Well, not “only”, her and Skyla are bffs and that also looks fun. I just. Can’t imagine her romantically being interested in me sometimes. Heh.
Grimsley was a crush that came on yeeeaaaars after his Gen, and it hit me like a freight train. I swear, he made very little impression on me in B/W, because I was young and I was just excited to possibly see N again as champion. I was a little shit, okay. I also never played B2/W2 all the way through, which is a huge stain on my Pokémon record. Anyways. When he showed up in Sun/Moon, I gasped. I was like, that’s a familiar face. Why is he hot now? (The answer is we was always hot, and I just had a few years to grow between games). But like, I kind of tamped it back down? I think I legit tried to tell myself around Sun/Moon era that I can’t keep finding Pokémon characters hot, because I was drooling over another one in Moon. Anywho. Grimsley kept popping up as fanart on my Tumblr dash for a while and by the time I pulled him in Pokémon Masters, I slipped into love. Whoops.
Professor Sycamore, probably not my proudest moment of fandom. He was another one I liked from the very introduction. I made fun of him in equal measure, but I affectionately referred to him as “Professor Hotdad” for an embarrassingly long amount of time. He’s not even the oldest of my Pokémon F/Os. One of my other Pokémon F/Os is canonically a father. But nope. Sycamore was Hotdad. That all said, he did make me smile like a crush-stricken schoolgirl when he talked in game so it wasn’t all just memey objectification. I do love him dearly.
Gen VII! Alola! Guzma! Oh man, like I’d stated earlier, Team Skull really nestled it’s way close to my heart the way no team had since Team Rocket. It wasn’t all because of Guzma, I really did like the group of ragtag misfits banding together and creating a family. Guzma was icing on the cake. Oh boy, he made my heart do funny little flips even when he was threatening me in game. I loved his design, I loved his character, the way he talked, I just. Ugh, I was down bad for ya boy in Moon and Ultra Moon. He’s actually the inspiration behind my main blog url: its-ya-boi-remington. The “Y’all are stupid!” line and face lives in my head rent free at all times. Guzma protection squad.
(Nanu isn’t a romantic so I won’t talk about him here, just know I’m not forgetting him!)
Leon was, believe it or not, my actual first Gen VIII crush. I saw that fashion disaster and felt a warm comfort from him. It didn’t help that I mentally read every character in Galar with some UK/British Isles accent, that sweetened the deal. I was actually gushing to a couple then-friends about Leon while we all played Sword/Shield together and they kind of mocked me about it. They chided me that Leon “doesn’t bat for my team” and said either of them would have a better chance with him if he were real. So I was a little downtrodden about Leon after that for quite a while. It wasn’t until a couple months ago when suddenly it hit me that A- He’s literally fictional and my version of him can like me regardless of what “team he bats for” and B- I’m nonbinary? So rules get thrown out the window, anyone who likes me is both a miracle and some kind of gay whatever way you spin it. So I let myself warm back up to him, though I’m still a little skittish from before.
Piers, I guess, as awful as it sounds, was initially a crush rebound. Like, don’t get me wrong, I’d have been attracted either way. He’s a musician, a SINGER no less, and has that emo/punk vibe. But he’s also gentle and kind. Swoon. But it helped that I had my crush-feelers out full-force for a cutie in game to obsess over since I was still butthurt about my “friends” killing my crush on Leon. Obsess I did, and continue to do. I could probably snap this man over my knee like firewood he’s so lanky, idk why I put that in here but it’s staying. Piers is the one I most imagine jamming out with on a regular basis, and it makes performing for no one a bit more fun 🥰
I’m finally getting tired, I feel like I’ve been typing this for an hour. I probably have been. Ah geez now I gotta tag all these F/Os lmao. Thanks for letting me ramble.

Art Direction of Tabletop RPGs
Dungeons and Dragons is good at being Dungeons and Dragons.
That shouldn't be a controversial opinion, and it's not worded as one, yet I have one friend who derisively labels it as a war game, and another friend who believes D&D is all you need in regards to TRPGs. These two are from distinct eras of my life, and have never met.[1]
My moderate view is such: Dungeons and Dragons is good. It's not the ultimate system, but if you want a western fantasy built on the framework of Tolkien, Fifth Edition is the way to go. You could use a different system, in theory, but no other system has the same reach and stability. Everyone knows D&D, which is valuable.
Its combat and mechanics are a good balance of grit and function, and it's mostly teachable. My friend's 'wargaming' derision is because he believes it doesn't support role-playing well. Something about the guy who wrote Dungeon World saying if it's not in the rules, it’s not in the game.[2] But I've always felt that D&D makes the right decision in not bogging it down with structure and dictating the 'correct' way to role-play.
However, if you want to do anything else (Sci-fi, non-european fantasy, superheroes, Slice of Life), best case scenario the seams will creak in the attempt. D&D is good at being D&D, and that's the limit.
I appreciate D&D. I'll play D&D, happily!
There's a reason I bristle when “DM” is used as the generic term.
That said, I've always had a sort of tonal disconnect when I play D&D, and it's because of the art.
Fair warning, what follows is a lot of personal interpretations and vague mumbling trying to relay a point. I’m not actually an authority on anything.
Tumblr media
(Dungeons & Dragons owned by Wizard of the Coast . Image sourced from Wikipedia)
Dungeons and Dragons does not have pretty art. It’s technically well done, and far from ugly, but it’s not actually inspiring. Above we have the cover of the Player’s Handbook, the first thing most new players see. Setting aside that the focus of the cover art for what should be the book about Player Characters is a giant monster man[4], the cover is very orange. The actual people are composed of muted, neutral colors, and the background is vague and out of focus.
It’s not really conveying an air of fantastic worlds and larger-than-life characters (giant wearing a dragon skeleton aside). It coveys oppression, monotony, and “realism”.
Tumblr media
(Pathfidner owned by Paizo. Image sourced from Wikipedia)
Pathfinder’s core rulebook, on the other hand, is colorful. Look at that big, bright dragon![5] Sensibly dressed Fighter Man’s brown clothes are still bright enough to pop him out from the green-grey dungeon background[6], and Fantastic Sorceress’s red dress is also bright and helps frame the Fighter as her hand glows with magic.
While both covers feature a woman with an orb of magic, D&D’s cover shows magic as contained and lighting a small space, while Pathfinder’s magic is big and trailing, hinting at movement.
Actually, D&D’s mage girl doesn’t have a cohesive movement. Is she falling from above? Jumping in from the left? Where is she going? It doesn’t really follow in a meaningful way.
Anyways: color. Yes, yes, I know the plague of brown and and muted tones is a much whined about criticism, and it might seem odd from someone calling himself SepiaDice, but neutral tones have their place; usually as background and supporting other colors to pop more.
Besides, Sepia has a noble history in film, the brown range isn’t a common image color, and Sepia is fun to say.[7]
Color choice is very important. Bright colors draw the eye and make visuals more distinctive. Bright colors also denote and bring energy to things. Dull colors are used for locations meant to be calm and sedate. If you want the characters and locations to seem fun and full of life, you fill it with bright colors.
Everything breaths, adventure can strike at anytime!
Dull colors, and it’s hibernation. People are around, but they don’t seem to enjoy it.
But let’s turn to the visual storytelling: what does each cover tell you about life in their setting?
D&D: lots of posing to look fancy, but there’s no real sense of energy. Jumpy Magerson’s weird Megaman hop has been mentioned, of course. The Giant has a look of dull surprise as he drops Jumpy Magerson,[8] as he holds a sword in the non-active hand. Foreground fencer man is wide open, holding his own foil up and away from where it might accidentally jab anyone. The locations is… orange? Looks like there might be lava geysers?
Patherfinder: A dragon roars at its enemies! Teeth bared, tongue coiled, tendons on display! Wings unfurled to make it seem larger! The fighter is yelling back at the dragon, his weapons mid-swing! Shoulder forwards to defend the rest of the body! The Sorceress is holding a firm stance as she casts a spell that crackles with arcane energy!
Pathfinder’s cover tells a story of epic combat, fizzly magic, and energy. D&D’s cover tells a story of two adventurers existing in a space also occupied by a giant.
Now, both of these systems have the same ancestry, as Pathfinder is an iteration on D&D 3.5.[9] But one sparks more joy when I look at it.
But let’s do another case study. I’ll need an audience volunteer, and my brother’s the only person immediately on hand.
I’m going to make him list three qualities of goblins real quick:
Green
Wimpy
Sneaky
Awesome. Don’t know if the green text translated, but those are what he wrote. Give him a hand!
So, with those three traits in mind, let’s look at a goblin picture from D&D Beyond:
Tumblr media
(Owned by Wizards of the Coast. Source here)
Like, you can’t say D&D doesn’t call that a goblin, it’s literally on the goblin page.
This guy is yellow. He’s built like a four foot tall WWE Wrestler. He’s defending with his advancing arm as he rears up to smack ya!
(Okay, “Sneaky” is a hard one to argue.)
Moving on, what does Pathfinder call a Goblin:
Tumblr media
(Owned by Paizo. Source here)
Look at this charming miscreant! Green. Big ole head. Good mix of of ugly and oddly adorable. Probably two feet tall, and happens to want your two feet, please, but you could step on him if you’d like.
He also looks like a Gremlin
Tumblr media
(An adorable little chaos monster owned by Warner Brothers. Source)
Point is, Pathfinder’s more cartoony take on the classic monster feels more in the spirit of the thing. Every time I see one of those goofy faces, I feel like I’m in for an enjoyable time.
Bringing us back around to the point of this essay: the art direction of D&D bogs down my theater of the mind. The art in the rulebooks don’t inspire creativity or fantastic visions. It inspires… dull, lifeless people walking through dirt roads flanked by dead grass.
I don’t enjoy looking at D&D’s art. Relatedly, I don’t like looking at the art of Magic: the Gathering, whose style I can’t help by see in every D&D sourcebook cover I see. Neither game invokes an inviting world, but utilitarian ones that exist to give quick, forgettable visual flair to represent mechanical card effects.
To save making this long essay even longer and unfocused, I’ll save talk of actual ‘canon’ lore for another time.[10]
So why do I, a semi-professional funny man and sad dreamer who can’t actually draw, want to talk about rulebook art?
Well, I’ve always felt a disconnect when I play D&D. I make the characters, I roll the dice, I attempt to role-play, but I’ve always had an emotional gap between me and the character I’m playing. I like the concept, but when I use my theater of the mind, the character feels stiff and divorced from everything. Kind of like the 5th Edition rulebook.
Then I saw this:
Tumblr media
(Source tweet. All of this artist’s work is great and I wish I could hire them.)
This half-elf showed up on my twitter timeline, and my first thought was ‘How come my characters don’t look like that?’
Soon followed by ‘Why couldn’t they?’
Then I completed the trilogy with ‘Why haven’t I imagined my characters in a style appealing to me?’
As I was deep into contemplating what sort of aesthetic I consider my “brand”,[11] it was entering a mind primed to start overanalyzing.
So, how do I imagine my characters? In the neighborhood of the D&D art, if I have  firm concept. Micah Krane always was mentally nebulous to me, just kinda being a generic half-elf dude. Trix (who was created for the brightly colored Pathfinder) is green-haired and wears a tail coat, but otherwise is also normal looking in my mind’s eye. In the last two D&D campaigns, Tybalt was also vague in appearance, and Teddi had Goat horns, but those were meant to stand out on a generic rogue character.[13]
But you know what I’ve never put on a character I’ve played? Glasses.
I hope that those who read my various media reviews[14] don’t need this overly explained, but I like glasses. I, myself, don’t wear glasses, but I find them to be great accessories in character design. Frames the eyes, come in a variety of shapes, adds bit of extra visual interest. I always point out Meganekkos and pay them extra attention.[15] I really, really like girls with glasses.
But I’ve never made one. Because there’s no cute design in D&D rulebooks. Just a range of handsome people to ugly halflings.[16]
That is the effect of art design in a system. It sets tone, expectations, and aesthetic for the players. It’s so ingrained that everytime I see art of players’ characters that break the standard, it always takes me aback. It’s inspiring to see artists who manage to divorce D&D the game from D&D the art.
I want to imagine fun, personally appealing characters. But the subtle direction of the insert art as I look through to rulebook, or the provided character portraits of D&D Beyond does not suggest things I like to see. It infects the mind, and leaves specific molds. People in practical, mundane clothes, walking down drab, uninteresting roads.
It’s the same lack of escapism that makes Western (Video Game) RPGs super unappealing to me.[17] Dark Souls, Elder Scrolls, Bioshock don’t look like fun places to be, they look tiring and full of splintery furniture waiting to do 1d4 nonlethal damage.
So I have to talk about anime now.
My mother was staying at my home a little while ago, and I turned on My Roommate is a Cat. This prompted her ask me about what about anime was appealing. I couldn’t form a competent answer for the question at the time, but it’s had time to churn in my head.
Anime is a good middle ground between cartoon and realism. It can broach deeper topics and more mature storytelling than children’s cartoons,[18] without sacrificing a light visual tone and fantastic imagery. Also, the fact that it’s produced by a non-American, non-European culture lends a degree of separation with cultural expectations and tropes. Enhances Escapism.
Luckily, in (very) recent years, after generations of exchanging video games and animation back and forth, Japanese Tabletop RPGs are starting to join in on the fun.
Which means I can look at Ryuutama.
Tumblr media
(Image copied from DriveThruRPG. Brought over the pacific by Kotodama Heavy Industries. Buy this book.)
I love this system.
Watercolor art direction. Layout evokes a spellbook. Two Characters and a Dog take the focus on the cover, while the road signs and tiny shrine in the background invoke the emphasis on travel and wonder.
The interior art?
Tumblr media
(Taken off the Ryuutama (english) website. Buy this book.)
Well, that makes the game just look like fun. Cartoony characters fighting cat goblins. Conflict, but it doesn’t make life feel like a constant struggle. A world I wish to inhabit. There’s also more detailed images of dragons and other world-establishing pictures mixed in to give the art range, but it’s this sort of charming that makes Ryuutama the first rulebook I actually sat and read cover to cover.[19] It’s a good system I already reviewed. Buy this PDF, maybe they’ll reprint the physical book.
Anyways, I’ll admit, the art’s a little too simple for D&D. Perfect for Ryuutama, and the end of the scale I want my mental image to be, but overshoots the sweet spot. And it’s difficult enough to find players for the much more popular 5e, so Ryuutama exclusivity would grind my playtime to zero.
Still, Ryuutama does a great job of setting it’s light, fantastic tone, where D&D has failed me. The art direction of the books, and years of exposure and defaulting to what I assume D&D should look for establishes a mental habit that’s hard to break. Wizards of the Coast has drowned nerd spaces with its particular kind of art, especially with MtG plastered all over hobby stores, deck boxes, dice, playmats, and even D&D sourcebooks.
That’s not even accounting for fanworks and the speculative fiction art in online spaces.
So what do I want to look like? Were I blessed with talent or with patient to actually learn to draw well, what would I be referencing?
What about what set my expectations of fantasy years before IndigoDice invited me to that fateful Traveller game?
Tumblr media
(Screen cap of Tales of Vesperia grabbed from here.)
Well, okay, what I’m actually thinking about is Tales of Symphonia, but Vesperia’s graphics are kinda what nostalgia tells me Symphonia tooked like, as opposed to what it actually looks like.[20]
Look at that verdant town! Warm lighting, bright characters, leaves growing to depict life. A hotel built into a tree. This is a fantasy world that is unashamed about life thriving.
Forget solarpunk. This is my aesthetic.
As for the party members…
Tumblr media
(Okay, Judith’s a little gratuitous, but The Definitive Edition lets me put her in a suit, and she’s awesome. Art stolen from here.)
Oddly enough, as far as JRPG outfits go, these are pretty tame with details.[21] Mostly bright, popping colors, even Yuri’s dark clothes are done in such a way to not feel grim and edgy, hints of personality, and I just enjoy looking at them.
The Tales series as a whole does a good job of taking European fantasy and applying Japanese whimsy to the design. Also yukatas. Every member looks like the hero of their own story, while still being part of a cohesive whole.
Which is, you know, the ideal way to operate as a TRPG party.
So, what’s the take away?
Artists, keep being creative. Pull inspiration in from things besides the rulebooks and Critical Role. Look at the other things you love and bring visual flare and whimsy to your art. Then share it. Ignite the passions of those of us who can’t do the draw-good thing.
Players, play with the tropes. I love doing it narratively and mechanically. My favorite rogue is still my neutral good stage magician who would never do a crime. Explore what’s possible in the freeform world of tabletop games, both in play and your Theater of the Mind.
Game designers, branch out with the art. And stop using Powered by the Apocalypse as a crutch.[22]
Hope this long ramble was enjoyable and cohesive. If you want more of this, my other works, and maybe to allow me to make an actual play podcast, consider supporting me through Patreon or Ko-fi.
Until next time, may your dice make things interesting.
[1] Though I would love to read a transcript of the two discussing it. It'd be a fun debate. [2] I don't like Powered by the Apocalypse for precisely this reason. Every actual play I've heard with the system has players talking about their characters in the abstract, because they're just pressing the buttons on their character sheet.[3] [3] I maybe should do a breakdown of PbtA one day. [4] Which is pretty poor direction. Do an epic group shot of characters battling a horde around them. [5] None of the D&D core books has a dragon on the cover. Come on, that should’ve been a gimme! [6] Similar note as footnote 5. [7] Also CornflowerBlueDice is too long to be catchy. [8] I figured it out! [9] I haven’t looked at at Pathfinder’s forthcoming second edition. Fifth Edition reclaimed it’s throne as The ubiquitous system after fourth lost its footing, so I don’t think there’s much point. [10] TL;DR: I ignore it. [11] Pulp Fantasy is too mundane. Steampunk is too victorian-y. Sci-fi fractals into so much. Solarpunk has appeal, but isn’t quite right.[12] [12] Haven’t really found the term. [13] Let’s not examine that I put more thought into female character design than male for the moment. [14] Which you should. Validate my efforts! [15] And desperately pray it’s considered innocent enough of a fetish that I don’t have to stop. [16] Never liked halflings. Gnomes are fine. Halflings, in art, have always been off-putting and malformed. [17] That and the emphasis of character customization kneecapping the Player Character’s narrative involvement. Can’t give them a personality if that’s the end user’s job! [18] Even Avatar: The Last Airbender felt like it had to sneak the narrative depth it achieved past corporate. [19] I do need to give it a reread, though. Relearn the system. [20] It still looks good, especially the environment, but the characters are kind of… leaning towards chibi. [21] This, specifically, is why I chose to highlight Vesperia over Rune Factory. [22] Technically nothing to do with this essay, but I can’t stress this point enough.

SUP NIGHT I WANNA ASK YA ABOUT THEM REALLY NOICE GASTER BROS (͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) SO IN THE SWAPPED AUS SHOULDN'T LIKE DINGUS AND WD I THINK THEY WERE NICKNAMED BE SWAPPED WITH SOMEONE? AS USUALLY GASTER IS LIKE SWAPPED WITH THE RIVER PERSON OR SOMETHING AND STUFF IN THE SWAP AUS, SO WOULD LOVE TO KNOW WHY AND STUFF!
SUP ESSY HELLO I ADORE YOU AND EVERY ONE OF YOUR THOUGHTS AND POST TAGS
so, i definitely considered this for a long time when designing the gasters! riverperson is the standard potential swap for them, if any. my thought process on it was a little convoluted, really, but in the end i decided to run with the way i like to think of the swap AUs-
it’s the characters approach to life that is swapped, rather than their specific roles.
this is why my SwapSans is actually still very much so bright and mechanically-minded, though he approaches life through a lens of believing the best in others, actively trying his best and approaching everyone with a sassy and exuberant friendliness, and tackles his problems and passions via puzzles. my SwapFell Black is similar, albeit with the influence of the darkness/kill-or-be-killed mentality, and an appropriately developed front of somewhat spiky confidence portrayed to help him survive (no matter what he feels internally). my SwapPap is still Pap deep down, but approaches life with Sans’ easygoing and comical (slightly tsukkomi-esque, really) humor, weighed by his depression/apathy/nihilism, and when confronted with a problem either ignores it, is deeply affected by it but hides it, or (post-pacifist setting) tends to approach it scientifically with a trademark ‘what is a hilarious shortcut to an unlikely but effective solution’ approach. Russ is similar, but like Black, is weighed down by the darkness/kill-or-be-killed mentality of his timeline, and acts in a decidedly dry and deadly manner from the shadows if its not something he can just ignore or treat apathetically.
so, for the Gasters, i tried to take that into account, and ‘swap’ the way they approach their scientific passions. where Gaster and Doc G are damn singleminded in their focus and approach - logical, oriented, organized - Dings and WD are a lot more fluid. they were actually considered eccentrics and non-conformists by most of their community, and Dings in particular had the hardest time of all of them securing the position of Royal Scientist (WD would have, if not for his... deadly effectiveness). both of them (inspired by RiverPerson) are the hardest to follow in their processes, their lines of thinking and experimentation so broad, organic, and wild that the only primary assistant they could have was Stretch/Russ - any other people working in their labs had to only work on a single aspect of any of their projects.
where Gaster and Doc G are like a spiders web in their approach - finely and elaborately constructed, widely effective yet still comprehensible to an outside eye even if they reach their conclusion/goals far before others could begin to comprehend the steps - Dings and WD are more like fierce hurricanes with tornadoes at their centers... their path is often unpredictable, their effects encompassing all manner of approaches and environments, their power fed best by changing pressure. that’s not to say they’re necessarily destructive, of course (darn analogies), but just that as much as you can observe about them, it’s nearly impossible to predict what may be next in their path - and, additionally, that they can affect and address all manner of new things that have come to their attention as simultaneously as they thoroughly turn over a wide swath of other topics.
in the end, though, they’re incredible cohesive and all-encompassing in their approaches, moreso than Gaster or Doc G - because their attention was able to so widely stray and explore all manner of new paths in highly unorthodox ways, they had significantly greater success with the study of souls and soul magic, and they operated with a surprising amount of empathy for having the scientific weight of the fate of monsterkind on their shoulders (esp. surprising for WD, of course - though he was anything but innocent, even with his empathy...;;). they were particularly hard to read for nearly everyone because of it, and often were cryptic (and enjoyed being so). there’s a lot of the RiverPerson influence in that, i feel, heh.
but yes! hopefully that makes a little sense for these nerds - i’m actually really excited that you asked about it, no one seems to have thought about it enough to ask X)
