had too many thoughts about different types of rabbits affecting character design and did too much research! like; what of gigantic Usagi!! what of absolute fluffball Usagi!!! SO i went down a rabbit rabbit hole hohoh

most devastating bit of knowledge i kept coming across though was recomendations for pet owners to get 2 or more rabbits cause they are social creatures and are happiest when living in pairs...

if you want more ramblings theres more sourced research on these 4 breeds below-

Belgian hare is an actual rabbit species! wild how names are like that. They're known as a 'fancy' breed cause they were purposely bred to look like a hare- not through crossbreeding rabbits n hares though. Unfortunately because of this pedigree-ness they're not the most... sturdy and hate humidity or heat. They're essentially made to look rugged and wild but are very much showponies but their speed is nothing to be sniffed at. Poor fellas are nervous lil guys but surprisingly intelligent and can be trained to walk on leashes. Very inch-a-resting to think about for Usagi if one wanted to show I suppose the side of him being the son of the village magistrate when growing up?

Little... little lionhead. Compact! Little bodies!! But big ears!!! Another Belgian origin that is believed to be a cross between Netherland Dwarf and Swiss Fox rabbits. So small they be, so much so to be considered a toy breed. They can have two types of manes: single mane (short, less bushy, gets outgrown) or double mane (vEry bushy n big, stays forever). Very very affectionate and high maintenance because of hair. Also quite smart and can be trained like the Belgian hare. The lionhead getting trained/raised by a lion... need I say more.

BIG! The Continental Giant rabbit (aka Conti) do be big. Very docile in nature and smart and bIG!! Apparently they can develop dog-like behaviour if handled as a baby. Prone to spinal injuries though because of BIG :( . Prone to wander with 'low activity levels.' They curious, they nooosy. Contis also are the rabbits with biggest ears!!! Unlike their cousins the Flemish Giant, Contis have more of a thick, dense fur that needs more careful grooming. Nothing of note to add to compare to Usagi lore other than it would be funny if he was huge sdfbkb-

Another big one but not as big but the English Lop Rabbit! Very pretty!! Loose ears that dangle with male ones being longer than female. Alas, fancy ears means its harder for them to be very active so they're easy going by nature. Also has the longest ears!!! This one I see less as Usagi cause of how active he be but, at the same time, it could lean hard into his nickname of 'longears' and make it more impressive how as a ronin his ears stay long. The breed's characterised as being so calm n curious that it is regarded as the 'god of the rabbit world.' Good for them.

Likes- Pepsi the rabbit, Kale, chewing thick clothes and lounging fully stretched out. Will happily greet you multiple times when exercising. Kisses sleeves occasionally. Likes to stand on my chest (when I'm laid down). Chews toys.

Dislikes- head pets in the open/outside her bed, other rabbits (she's intact) that are not Pepsi, non leafy greens, things/medicine touching her face or mouth.

Is a pet and retired brood doe. Partners- Oreo (Aunt's black otter broken mini rex). She is a retired brood doe due to carrying a recessive gene for malocclusion.

One of my most cherished memories was her trust in me. When I first obtained her, she hid behind me, when she was scared. When she couldn't (I was laying down) she jumped on my chest for "safety".

Amber

Yellow Dutch doe.

Birthday is 13th October 2021, had since 9 weeks, 6 days old.

Likes- head pets (body pets are inferior), grunting with joy, will try any food, kisses. licking my arm, face, hand, basically anything near her. Destroying toys.

Dislikes - not getting pet, sadly cage aggressive, other rabbits (although she is spayed). Not getting attention.

Is a pet. First rabbit I Spayed.

Is the friendliest rabbit I have ever met, and I've owned 13 rabbits and four lively bunny kits. Will literally lick you until you move away. Biggest dream is forever head pets.

Likes- her mum (Juno), Squishing her mum (mostly stepping on her head), kale and destructable bunny safe toys.

Dislikes- going to the vets for teeth trims and health checks.

Very friendly baby rabbit.

sadly, she was born with dental malocclusion. This resulted in an underbite and molar spurs. She goes for bimonthly incisor trimming. If her molar spurs worsen and cause injury, she will need to be euthanised. Currently, she has managed to grind down her molar spurs. So, there is hope for the future.

Jasmine

Black Himilayan Netherland dwarf doe

Birthday is 6th June 2021, had since 14 weeks, 2 days old.

Likes- loafing in her bed. Chinning toys and being left alone. Ignoring toys (occasional nibbles). Likes rocket and kale. Likes to sit on people's collar bone for "safety".

Dislikes- being pet, being handled (all while complaining audibly), Hands in her bed area, having her bottom or scent gland cleaned, Kisses. Other rabbits (is intact). Is very grumpy rabbit overall.

Is a pet. First Rabbit I Vaccinated. Cannot be spayed due to risks from small size, poor appetite and age past 2 years leading to higher risk of complications and irreversible Gi stasis.

Was in the woods for 23 days after escaping her hutch. Only would try greens after that time coincidentally.

Least favourite rabbit due to dislike of Netherland dwarfs, skittish temperament and overall grumpiness.

Only got as was told by parent to have nethie or no rabbits at all (at time we thought they were friendliest due to Hairoo and Jack the nethies, Caramel the Dutch mix was aggressive in comparison).

Thoughts on breeds with smaller ears like this Netherland Dwarf

I love this little guy/gal but the ears look too short for me so I am concerned for their well-being

I'm going to preface this by saying I'm not a vet or vet tech, just a rabbit enthusiast 😂 

To my knowledge, and in my experience, Netherland Dwarfs don't usually have ear problems more often than other breeds with upright ears. If I remember correctly, lops are more prone to ear problems because they have smaller and/or closed off ear canals. But I obviously can't speak for all Netherland dwarfs, only the one I had (she also wasn't a pure breed as far as we know because she was a rescue but she had the build including short ears of a Netherland Dwarf).

As for my personal thoughts on the breed and breeds in general? I love all buns and I can't choose a favourite breed. All of my buns except one (we took her in when her mom had to make an international move for work and didn't feel it was fair to put her senior bun through the stress of that) have also been rescues, and when I've adopted it's always been based on the personality of the bun.

Every bun has their own unique personality, though some breeds tend to have common personality traits like you would see in dog breeds. I admit I have a sweet spot for Netherland Dwarfs because of my bun, but that's more so that seeing them reminds me of her and how much I loved and continue to love her. But I also love the giant breeds. And the medium ones. And all the sizes in between and the crosses... I just really love bunnies 😂
