COVID-19 WHO and UNICEF stress the importance of breastfeeding
COVID-19 WHO and UNICEF stress the importance of breastfeeding
WHO and UNICEF are aiming to have consistent, sound reliable information based on the best available scientific evidence – guidance that will be updated as new evidence comes forward. We hope that policy makers everywhere will use these recommendations and adjust their infant feeding policies accordingly.  There have been many reports of mothers and babies being routinely separated at birth without any evidence that this is a wise or safe thing to do and overlooking the fact that breastmilk has antibodies and bio-active factors that are not present in infant milks.

This is an important guidance on whether to accept financial contributions or contributions in-kind from food and beverage companies in the context of the response to the COVID19 pandemic. It provides recommendations to mitigate risks and steps for implementation,  forbidding many of the tactics that manufacturers of baby foods and ultra-processed foods high in fats, sugar and/or salt are now using, eg cause-related marketing, contributions in kind, partnership language, co-branding.

Six articles reported the results of breast milk samples tested for SARS-CoV-2, including two systematic reviews (Neef et al., 2020)(Han et al., 2020), and found all to be negative. Furman and Noble (2020) note that while Holder pasteurization successfully inactivates SARS-CoV-2, it also reduces protective antibodies in human milk; therefore, they recommend infected mothers should continue directly breastfeeding their infants.
Four articles specifically promote breastfeeding of newborns when the mother has COVID-19, emphasizing the loss of protective health benefits to newborns when breastfeeding is interrupted (Vogel et al., 2020)(Demirci, 2020)(Bhandari et al., 2020)(Bhutta et al., 2020). Another article provides specific guidelines for breastfeeding mothers with suspected or confirmed COVID-19 (Sullivan et al., 2020).
Giampreti et al. (2020) evaluated the safety of medications used to treat COVID-19 among pregnant and lactating women. Fox et al. (2020) analyzed breast milk samples from 15 donors previously infected with SARS-CoV-2, observing a robust immune response to SARS-CoV-2 spike proteins. The authors suggest these findings warrant further investigation of the therapeutic use of extracted milk antibodies, as well as possible protective effects for breastfed infants.

Experiences of breastfeeding during COVID‐19: Lessons for future practical and emotional support
In the early HIV years  – until more was known –  emphasis was – understandably – placed primarily on reducing transmission. The role of exclusive breastfeeding in child survival was not recognised  and the UN policy was not changed until 2007. When commercial exploitation is added you get potentially toxic mix.

Infant and Young Child programming in the context of COVID-19. UNICEF Brief 2 V1 30th March1.
This brief contains many useful recommendations, including support for breastfeeding, skin-to-skin contact, kangaroo care, access to healthy foods, safe hygiene alongside safeguards regarding commercial influence, for example:
Key messages
1: Programmes and services to protect, promote and support optimal breastfeeding (early and exclusive) and age-appropriate and safe complementary foods and feeding practices should remain a critical component of the programming and response for young children in the context of COVID-19.
5: Full adherence to the International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes and subsequent WHA resolutions (including WHA 69.9 and the associated WHO Guidance on ending the inappropriate promotion of foods for infants and young children) in all contexts in line with the recommendations of IFE Operational Guidance. 6: Donations, marketing and promotions of unhealthy foods – high in saturated fats, free sugar and/or salt – should not be sought or accepted.
Key considerations:
• Monitor for Code violations and report them to national authorities, the nutrition cluster/sector coordination mechanism, and international monitors. • Support government to develop policies and procedures to monitor for and act on Code violations in accordance with the WHO/ UNICEF NetCode toolkit. Typical Code violations relate to infant formula labelling, supply management, and donations. • It is Important to raise awareness of health workers on their obligations under the Code (BMS companies may take advantage of this situation to try and promote their products through the health care system), together with disseminating information on the Code and mechanisms to report non-compliance. • Mothers need to be re-assured that it is safe to breastfeed their children
Donations of BMS by manufacturers has been shown to lead to increased use of substitutes and a reduction in breastfeeding. For this reason, the World Health Assembly (WHA) has stated that there should be no donations of free or subsidized supplies of breastmilk substitutes in any part of the health care system. This prohibition extends to emergency settings where governments have been urged by WHA to ensure that any required breast-milk substitutes are purchased, distributed and used according to strict criteria. For more details refer to Operational Guidance on Infant Feeding in Emergencies
[Avoid partnerships with companies that produce ‘unhealthy foods]: Such engagement carries the risk of the government and its partners to be perceived as endorsing a specific brand or products. Engagement with companies producing unhealthy food may damage reputation of the host governments, donor governments and communities. It may also appear to contradict the efforts on prevention of overweight. • Companies that manufacture BMS should continue to be excluded from any in-kind donations, funding engagements or co-branded partnership
The brief contains many more excellent recommendations regarding health food

Infant and Young Child Feeding in the Context of the COVID-19 Pandemic Eastern, Central and Southern Africa March 26, 2020.   PDF
This joint note aims to consolidate the current recommendations on Infant and Young Child Feeding in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic in Eastern, Central and Southern Africa. This guidance is not intended to replace national guidance, rather to serve as a resource that is based on the latest evidence. The contents are adapted to the African region from Clinical management of severe acute respiratory infection (SARI) when COVID-19 disease is suspected, Interim Guidance, 13 March 2020 WHO1.
____________________________________________-
WHO Clinical management of severe acute respiratory infection when novel coronavirus (nCoV) infection is suspected
https://www.who.int/publications-detail/clinical-management-of-severe-acute-respiratory-infection-when-novel-coronavirus-(ncov)-infection-is-suspected)
The sections on breastfeeding are on pages 13-14:
13. Caring for infants and mothers with COVID-19: IPC and breastfeeding
Relatively few cases have been reported of infants confirmed with COVID-19 and they experienced mild illness. No vertical transmission has been documented. Amniotic fluid from six mothers positive for COVID-19 and cord blood and throat swabs from their neonates who were delivered by caesarean section all tested negative for SARS-CoV-2 by RT-PCR. Breastmilk samples from the mothers after the first lactation were also all negative for SARS-CoV-2 (68, 69).
Breastfeeding protects against death and morbidity also in the post-neonatal period and throughout infancy and childhood. The protective effect is particularly strong against infectious diseases that are prevented through both direct transfer of antibodies and other anti-infective factors and long-lasting transfer of immunological competence and memory. See WHO Essential newborn care and breastfeeding (https://apps.who.int/iris/bitstream/handle/10665/107481/e79227.pdf). Therefore, standard infant feeding guidelines should be followed with appropriate precautions for IPC.
Infants born to mothers with suspected, probable or confirmed COVID-19 infection, should be fed according to standard infant feeding guidelines, while applying necessary precautions for IPC.
Remarks: Breastfeeding should be initiated within 1 hour of birth. Exclusive breastfeeding should continue for 6 months with timely introduction of adequate, safe and properly fed complementary foods at age 6 months, while continuing breastfeeding up to 2 years of age or beyond. Because there is a dose–response effect, in that earlier initiation of breastfeeding results in greater benefits, mothers who are not able to initiate breastfeeding during the first hour after delivery should still be supported to breastfeed as soon as they are able. This may be relevant to mothers that deliver by caesarean section, after an anaesthetic, or those who have medical instability that precludes initiation of breastfeeding within the first hour after birth. This recommendation is consistent with the Global strategy for infant and young child feeding(https://apps.who.int/iris/bitstream/handle/10665/42590/9241562218.pdf), as endorsed by the Fifty-fifth World Health Assembly, in resolution WHA54.2 in 2002, to promote optimal feeding for all infants and young children.
As with all confirmed or suspected COVID-19 cases, symptomatic mothers who are breastfeeding or practicing skin-to-skin contact or kangaroo mother care should practise respiratory hygiene, including during feeding (for example, use of a medical mask when near a child if with respiratory symptoms), perform hand hygiene before and after contact with the child, and routinely clean and disinfect surfaces which the symptomatic mother has been in contact with.
Breastfeeding counselling, basic psychosocial support and practical feeding support should be provided to all pregnant women and mothers with infants and young children, whether they or their infants and young children have suspected or confirmed COVID-19.
Remark 1: All mothers should receive practical support to enable them to initiate and establish breastfeeding and manage common breastfeeding difficulties, including IPC measures. This support should be provided by appropriately trained health care professionals and community-based lay and peer breastfeeding counsellors. See Guideline: counselling of women to improve breastfeeding practices (https://apps.who.int/iris/bitstream/handle/10665/280133/9789241550468-eng.pdf) and the WHO Guideline: protection, promoting and supporting breastfeeding in facilities providing maternity and newborn services (https://apps.who.int/iris/bitstream/handle/10665/259386/9789241550086-eng.pdf).
In situations when severe illness in a mother due to COVID-19 or other complications prevent her from caring for her infant or prevent her from continuing direct breastfeeding, mothers should be encouraged and supported to express milk, and safely provide breastmilk to the infant, while applying appropriate IPC measures.
Remarks: In the event that the mother is too unwell to breastfeed or express breastmilk, explore the viability of relactation, wet nursing, donor human milk or appropriate breastmilk substitutes, informed by cultural context, acceptability to mother and service availability. There should be no promotion of breastmilk substitutes, feeding bottles and teats, pacifiers or dummies in any part of facilities providing maternity and newborn services, or by any of the staff. Health facilities and their staff should not give feeding bottles and teats or other products within the scope of the International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes and its subsequent related WHA resolutions, to breastfeeding infants. This recommendation is consistent with the WHO guidance. Acceptable medical reasons for use of breast-milk substitutes (https://apps.who.int/iris/bitstream/handle/10665/69938/WHO_FCH_CAH_09.01_eng.pdf;jsessionid=709AE28402D49263C8DF 6D50048A0E58?sequence=1).
Mothers and infants should be enabled to remain together and practise skin-to-skin contact, kangaroo mother care and to remain together and to practise rooming-in throughout the day and night, especially immediately after birth during establishment of breastfeeding, whether they or their infants have suspected, probable or confirmed COVID-19 virus infection.
Remarks: Minimizing disruption to breastfeeding during the stay in the facilities providing maternity and newborn services will require health care practices that enable a mother to breastfeed for as much, as frequently and for as long as she wishes. See WHO Guideline: protection, promoting and supporting breastfeeding in facilities providing maternity and newborn services (https://apps.who.int/iris/bitstream/handle/10665/259386/9789241550086-eng.pdf).
Parents and caregivers who may need to be separated from their children, and children who may need to be separated from their primary caregivers, should have access to appropriately trained health or non-health workers for mental health and psychosocial support.
Remarks: Given the high prevalence of common mental disorders among women in the antenatal and postpartum period, and the acceptability of programmes aimed at them, interventions targeted to these women need to be more widely implemented. Prevention services should be available in addition to services that treat mental health difficulties. This recommendation is consistent with the IASC Reference group for Mental Health and Psychosocial Support in Emergency Setting 2020 Briefing note on addressing mental health and psychosocial aspects of COVID-19 outbreak – version 1.1 (https://interagencystandingcommittee.org/system/files/2020-03/MHPSS%20COVID19%20Briefing%20Note%202%20March%202020-English.pdf) and the Improving early childhood development: WHO guideline (https://www.who.int/publications-detail/improving-early-childhood-development-who-guideline).

UNICEF Baby Friendly Initiative:
There is a wealth of evidence that breastfeeding reduces the risk of babies developing infectious diseases. There are numerous live constituents in human milk, including immunoglobulins, antiviral factors, cytokines and leucocytes, that help to destroy harmful pathogens and boost the baby’s immune system. Considering the protection that human milk and breastfeeding offers the baby and the minimal role it plays in the transmission of other respiratory viruses, it seems sensible to do all we can to continue to promote, protect and support breastfeeding.
To facilitate breastfeeding, mothers and babies should be enabled to stay together as much as possible, to have skin-to-skin contact, to feed their baby responsively and to have access to ongoing support when this is needed.
When mothers are partially breastfeeding, they can be encouraged to maximise the amount of breastmilk they are able to give or, if they choose, to be supported to return to full breastfeeding. If mothers are considering stopping breastfeeding, it is worth having a sensitive conversation about the value of continuing during the Covid-19 outbreak

“Mothers and infants should be enabled to remain together and practise skin-to-skin contact, kangaroo mother care and to remain together and to practise rooming-in throughout the day and night, especially immediately after birth during establishment of breastfeeding, whether they or their infants have suspected, probable, or confirmed COVID-19.

Key messages  on nutrition in the context of COVID-19.
Breastfeeding in the context of COVID-19
The benefits for the baby of not separating it from its mother in the early newborn period are well documented; keeping the baby with the mother provides protective effects for child survival, in general, and early initiation of breastfeeding allows passive transfer of antibodies that protect the newborn infant from infections, including respiratory infections.
Since this is a respiratory virus (like influenza, and other coronaviruses), it is unlikely to be transmitted via breast milk. However, there is a risk of transmission from an infected mother to her infant through direct contact and respiratory droplets, as well as contact with contaminated surfaces.
Therefore, considering the benefits of breastfeeding, at this time it is advised for infected mothers well enough to breastfeed to continue to do so, while practicing appropriate infection prevention and control measures. This includes respiratory hygiene (wear a medical mask while feeding child, following best practices on how to wear, remove and dispose of masks and on hand hygiene after removal), hand hygiene before and after breastfeeding (wash hands with soap and water), avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth, and cleaning and disinfecting any contaminated surfaces.
All mothers in affected and at-risk areas with symptoms consistent with 2019-nCoV (fever, cough, difficulty breathing) should seek medical care early, and follow instructions from the health care provider including.
o    cover their mouth and nose, when coughing or sneezing.
o    practice hand hygiene, washing often with soap; and
o    dispose of infected waste (e.g. soiled tissue) in a bin with a lid.

However, 2019 has been the year that NFTs have gained mainstream attention. And it should come as no surprise that even huge, multinational companies are currently developing NFT projects.
Recently, Mirosoft’s blockchain-based cloud platform, Azure, released its own nonfungible tokens program called “Azure Heroes” with the aim of rewarding its developer community.
Azure Heroes
Through Azure Heroes, Microsoft is on a mission to empower technical practitioners of all backgrounds. With that as the objective, it has created a tool to inspire the community to learn, coach and build on Azure while promoting healthy and inclusive behavior.
Issuance and transactions of “Badger” collectibles will be carried out on the Ethereum network, allowing winners to hold them as NFTs. The tokens were created in partnership with Enjin, a platfor that specifically caters to the video game industry.
In order to earn one of these Badgers, Azure developers must first be nominated — either by themselves or by the community. Then, the community moderators will select the best nominees, based on their performance, to be awarded a Badger. Winners will then be provided with a QR code that can be used to redeem their Badgers via their Enjin wallet, where it can then be transferred to any other NFT-compatible Ethereum address.
The rise of NFTs
Fungibility refers to an item that is interchangeable with another, identical item. A dollar bill or a grain of rice is fungible — i.e., mutually interchangeable with other dollar bills or grains of rice. On the other hand, a house or a piece of art constitutes a nonfungible item — i.e., not mutually interchangeable with other houses or other works of art. Keeping this distinction in mind, an NFT is a unique digital asset with a traceable history that differentiates it from other assets that appear similar.
One of the most interesting things about NFTs is their ability to fundamentally change digital ownership. Until now, people never truly had ownership of anything that they purchased virtually. Purchasing in-game items and treating them as real-world assets is one thing, but the reality is that they don’t belong to the players who made the purchase; they belong to the game’s publishers.
However, 2019 was the tipping point for the adoption of NFTs, and there are a few reasons for this — at least in the gaming community. First of all, games like Gods Unchained were game changers upon their release.
Developed by Australia-based blockchain gaming startup Immutable, Gods Unchained is a turn-based digital trading card game that operates on the Ethereum blockchain. There are other collectible games — such as Decentraland, Etherbots, Spells of Genesis and Rare Pepe — whose popularity rose in 2019. However, outside of the gaming industry, companies utilizing NFTs, such as SuperRare, Zcrafty and Terra0, have also gained prominence.
Marketplaces like OpenSea, RareBits and OpenBazaar have also started to trade NFTs as crypto collectibles. The infrastructure around NFTs is also improving. 0xcert offers developer tools for issuing and managing NFTs. In addition, Codex Protocol has developed a decentralized registry for unique assets like art, fine wine, antiques and more.
Moreover, there are other factors for why NFTs are becoming more popular, one of them being an interest of multinational corporations in blockchain gaming. In September 2018, one of the biggest names in gaming, Ubisoft, sponsored the Blockchain Game Summit in Lyon, France. The following month saw Ubisoft become an inaugural member of Blockchain Game Alliance. When asked about the current use of NFTs in popular products and services, Ethan Pierse, the director at the CryptoAssets Institute, told Cointelegraph:
“Indiegogo and GoFundMe have also shown that people are willing to spend plenty of money supporting causes and products that they believe in. On Indiegogo, the product you get is called a Perk, and on Kickstarter, it is a reward, and people have contributed billions to those crowdfunded projects.”
Pierse went on to add that brand loyalty and self-identification are likely to intensify further, as supporters are also able to show off digital collectibles, concluding that:
“If those tokenized collectibles also have value as an asset to encourage hodling and trading, then we are looking at a digital version of the same craziness seen with Beanie Babies or Magic: The Gathering cards. A $90000 Magic card was just tokenized for 124 investors on collectible assets platform Mythic Markets.”
Diversification of use cases of NFTs
There is a noticeable drive for the development of NFT use cases beyond entertainment. Specifically with the case multi-layer blockchains, the foundational layer — which is the home of assets such as Bitcoin — is increasingly shifting toward being a store of value, presenting a segment of the market in which high-value NFTs can develop.
NFTs can signify ownership of high-value or sensitive physical, illiquid assets such as artwork or real estate. The latter is especially an area that can profit from the use of NFTs. Additionally, there is a drive to use tokenization and fractional ownership to make these investments liquid. For instance, NFTs can represent individual units in a property owned by multiple families.
Even though many look at NFTs as a way of building new financial assets and democratizing access to capital, regulation is likely to act as a hindrance. For example, the NFT platform Codex Protocol aspires to use NFTs as a medium to fractionalize ownership of a piece of art. While this is interesting in theory, there is a risk that doing so would turn these tokenized assets into securities, which would then need to be regulated as such.
Jonathan Brandt, the principal information technology consultant at the Willow Group who designed a course on blockchain at Minnesota State University, told Cointelegraph:
“I believe a major obstacle to the adoption of NFTs for more serious purposes, say, the provenance of antiquities or the tracking of a medical supply chain, is the lack of intuitive or obvious methods for redress and recovery. Ironically, many of the centralized institutions which blockchain stands to dismantle are really good at this. Microsoft, like it or not, has achieved tremendous mass-adoption of Internet Explorer, Windows, and the Office suite. It has the reach and the gravitas to nurture acceptance of NFTs.”
How NFTs can create value for an enterprise
Essentially, the evolution of NFTs is heavily dependent on the underlying blockchain infrastructure. Optimizing for scalability and transaction speeds, for example, is anticipated to have a huge impact on the rate of development for the space. Besides this, the absence of accessibility when it comes to NFTs is a real problem that has yet to be solved, and the entry of big players like Microsoft can go a long way to help.
Enterprises can use NFTs for inventory management, where certain tokens can be combined with other tokens to represent an assembled product with multiple component parts. Another area where NFTs can find application in enterprises such as Microsoft is in licensing software.
Such licenses have been traditionally represented by keys, but NFTs stored in wallets can now be used to grant permissions. Real estate is another example of a unique asset that can potentially be represented as NFTs. Additionally, identity management — both in social media and in enterprises — can leverage nontransferable NFTs.
Microsoft and blockchain
Through Azure, Microsoft has made many pioneering efforts toward blockchain adoption. Over the course of 2018, it has launched a blockchain development kit and the Azure Blockchain Workbench.
In May 2019, the company also unveiled the Azure Blockchain Services, which is a fully managed service that allows for the formation, management and governance of consortium blockchain networks.

Along with these products, the company has launched an extension to Visual Studio Code to help developers create and compile smart contracts based on Ethereum, and then deploy them on the public chain or on a consortium network in the Azure Blockchain Service. Regarding this, Pierse, the CryptoAssets Institute’s director, said:
“Azure is locked in a battle to differentiate itself with AWS, Oracle, and Heroku among others. If nothing else, this creates visibility and further engages Azure’s existing communities. I’m not sure that CTOs that have committed to other development platforms are going to make strategic decisions based on which ‘badger’ they can get, but I do think this could further showcase the engagement of Azure’s developer community.”
Soon after the announcement of Azure Heroes, Microsoft also unveiled new tokenization and blockchain data management services, highlighting the increased adoption of blockchain in enterprises.

Sharing mom's love with good causes on Mother's Day
Photo by Mrs. Flinger via FlickrCC
It's Mother's Day 2020. This holiday, first celebrated regionally in 1908 before going nationwide six years later, usually means that children spend the day with their moms.
Such closeness, however, has been happening every day for weeks for many families. Moms and dads and children and sometimes extended family members have hunkered down together at home 24/7 as a COVID-19 precaution.
But it is mom's special day, so I hope that all y'all came up with some change of pace this second Sunday in May to celebrate all that mothers do and all the extra they've taken on during the coronavirus outbreak.
Call and see: Every Mother's Day, a lot of folks who live far from their mothers reach out via phone.
This year, Smartphones' Facetime and the perennial Skyping are joined by Zoom, with dispersed siblings holding visual conference calls to collectively express their Mother's Day wishes.
In that spirit of outreach, I want to spread the Mother's Day sharing beyond our species. As a long-time birder, I enjoy watching the hatching each year of new avian families.
Sometimes it's via the nests that birds construct in our backyard plants. But for a wider view, I spend a lot of time at the Cornell University Lab of Ornithology website.
The Lab has a collection of live cameras that capture the nesting and feeding activities, at various times throughout the year, of more than a dozen birds and birding sites.
My favorite right now is the new clutch of owlets. The screenshot below shows the growing fuzzy trio of young barred owls jockeying for space.
In a few months, I see them out on their own, but still together like these three:
Whoa, check out Dave's stick pic.twitter.com/fuhT8Glz6g
— Cute Animals Videos. (@videos_animals) May 4, 2020
You can watch the baby owls and other birds live or select from some recent best-of tapings, like April's hatching highlights.
More maternal recognition: On this Mother's Day, these feathered moms are working, taking care of their perpetually hungry young.
That's the case, too, for many of their human counterparts who also are tending to babies or, because of their financial situations, can't take a day off even during a public health pandemic.
These moms deserve special recognition. And while we can't provide it in person, we can support programs that support them.
That's why this week's Sunday Shout Out goes to those philanthropic endeavors.
Read the full Pew Research Center Fact Tank report on U.S. moms.
Motherly suggests 7 charities that are helping moms.
Classy lists 5 nonprofits by and for mothers.
MyDomaine looks at 8 nonprofits designed to help single parents.
Charity Navigator, itself a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that tracks other charitable organizations, takes a more expansive approach. It suggests honoring your mom, stepmom, grandmother, aunt, friend who's a surrogate mom or any other the other maternal figures in your life by donating to a nonprofit and cause she cares about in her name.
If, sadly, your mom is no longer with you, the donation can be in her memory.
Charity Navigator has compiled a list of organizations that cover many categories of interest and importance to all the different types of moms. However, it also notes that, "By no means do we think these categories cover all women," and suggests using its search engine to find a reputable charity that's special to your mom.
You can share your Mother's Day inspired philanthropy by leaving a comment here on the ol' blog. You can share your mom's favorite cause and how you are recognizing her today by using the social media hashtag #ihonormymother.
Tax breaks for donations: Finally, since this is a tax blog, I've got to touch on that component.
I know you're not giving to a mom-specific or any charity for tax reasons. But if you can get some tax savings from your charitable donation, I'm sure your wise mother would advise you to take it!

Capturing On Film a Newborn Baby
Newborn digital photography is a impressive and special encounter. Newborn babies modify so much after their very first couple full weeks of lifestyle, that it is actually most ideal to photograph newborn babies prior to they are two full weeks outdated. After two full weeks, several babies create baby acne and also aren't as flexible as they were actually during their first handful of days of life Brooklyn.
Listed below are a couple of recommendations to take effective newborn baby pictures:
 WARMTH YOUR ROOM
Some of my most important aspects of capturing on film newborns is actually to make sure that the room you picture the newborn in is actually very warm. Like kids and adults, babies do not like being actually cold, so turn up the warm if you want a satisfied child. The temperature level of the room is actually crucial if you consider on carrying out nude infant chances.
FEED & CHANGE THE DIAPER OF YOUR BABY
Children are actually happiest when they have lately been fed, thus ensure to supply your child topic just before the shoot. No one likes a filthy baby diaper, thus produce sure to inspect your child's diaper just before the shoot so that he or she does not experience any type of soreness Brooklyn.
DEVELOP A BABY NEST NEAR A WINDOW
A lot of infants tend to cringe when flash coming from a cam is used. As a result, it's best to situate your target close to a home window to make sure that organic light could be made use of. If you have a bean bag or a pair big cushions, prepare them to create a "home" on a dining table, stand, or even on the flooring near the source of light. Deal with the home with a handful of child quilts and also you've received the ideal setup.
 BE PATIENT
When photographing an infant, you have to focus on the little one's schedule. So don't rush, take your time, and delight in the experience.
 RELAX YOUR SUBJECT
You can sooth an infant through making a recurring calming sound. Another method of relaxing a little one is actually picking the little one up as well as small rocking it backward and forward. If you have warm palms, you can easily try positioning among your finders between both brows of the child. There is a pressure point in this field and it creates the infant to feel rest and kicked back.
 MOVE AROUND
In order to get the excellent photograph, you ought to try to move your target. There are actually most definitely much more flattering positions to every face. Make an effort photographing coming from the edge, over and also coming from different positions that appear appropriate. Ensure to enable lightweight to hit your topics face as well as body while moving around that person Brooklyn.
How to Get the most effective Baby Photography
A little one photo is one of interesting photographs that can be excellent for your compilation, however there are some troubles that will certainly be actually experienced. Perhaps you desire to include several of your infant pictures to your compilation, but it is hard for you as you can certainly not seem to acquire it right. The photograph that you take performs not mirror the wonderful appeal of the infant. It is also complicated for you to reveal the frailty of the child as a new individual lifestyle. Really, acquiring the child photographs to appear fantastic is actually not as difficult as you believe. Here are some steps that you can easily take to enhance the little one picture.
 Measure 1
The initial important trait that you need to carry out is that you need to determine the type of photography that you would like to carry out. As we know that various stages in lifestyle of the children possess the different abilities. When the little ones come to be actually much older, they often may lift their heads, then they will definitely sit up and also observed by crawl, lastly they may walk. It is necessary for you to take into consideration concerning the grow older of the children just before attempting of deciding on what form of picture that you wish to take Brooklyn.
 Measure 2

Volkswagen, Porsche Dump Diesel for EVs, Mercedes Gets Smart
The Volkswagen Group looks to cut costs while it pivots
VW and Audi turned diesel into a dirty word by inventing and applying so-called defeat devices across the range. In the process, they thoroughly tainted their brand image and alienated loyal customers stuck with cars whose ratings had dropped from desirable to dead stock within a few months. But unlike Porsche, which absorbed tens of thousands of windfall oil burning engines for almost ten years before pulling the plug in late September, Wolfsburg and Ingolstadt still need the diesel-drinkers to meet their CO2 targets.
Even though the diesel has been re-engineered in a hurry and now fully complies with the stringent EU6 temporary emission norm, the gun-shy punters still fear city driving bans and crippling resale values. That’s understandable yet tragic, because clean diesels are no longer fake news. Instead, the very best of them harm the environment less than gasoline hybrids while retaining their torque and consumption advantage in full. In terms of noise and tailpipe odor, however, Rudolf D’s combustion principle obviously no longer complies with the core values of high-tech trend-setters like Porsche.
Oliver Blume and his predecessor Matthias Müller were among the first CEOs to jump on the BEV bandwagon and to compile a radical phase-out strategy for the gas engine. They kicked off the Mission E program to create Germany’s first Tesla fighter, they were at one point close to replacing the best-selling Macan with a zero-emission model, and they set out to boost Porsche’s BEV penetration to 50 percent of the mix by 2023.
Thanks to the development of the mass market all-electric Volkswagen ID, which will be priced similar to a mid-line Golf and due next year, Porsche had carte blanche to convert its entire model range to plug-in and electric power by 2028. And by entire model range, one must include both sports cars, namely the replacements of the mid-engine 718 and the tenth-generation 911. While even the most detailed ten-year plan is at best safe for the next four to five years, it is little short of sensational that Porsche has its mindset focused on a brand-new all-electric 911, which will be offered in addition to the conventional 992 replacement.
Mission E aka J1 aka Taycan will come to market next autumn, and it won’t differ dramatically in appeal and appearance from the show car. The same applies to the CUV derivative, aka Cross Turismo, which has been penciled in for late 2020. Although it didn’t clinic particularly well in the US due to its low stance, we still don´t expect the real thing to be a proper SUV. Proportions are key for every Porsche, so a higher roofline is less likely than some token badland add-ons. A two-door coupé with a soft-top sidekick based on J1 would be the fanciest trick in the book, but financial risk and the need to control the increasingly complex portfolio doesn’t leave much room for experiments early on in the e-age. The supplier community suggests that major mid-cycle improvements are due for Taycan only four years after the start of production. The prime goal is bound to take out cost and put in more power, range, and durability.
Instead of shifting the DNA from J1 straight to PPE (Premium Platform Electromobility), the platform co-developed with Audi, when Taycan expires at the end of 2026, Porsche is now allegedly determined to carry on with a heavily revised architecture codenamed, you guessed it, J2. If all goes according to plan, J2 will switch to solid state batteries which can do everything better than lithium ion cells—at a price.
There is no major change of body styles in the cards, but the aforementioned silent two-door GT always remains an option, even though Porsche should leave Audi and Bentley enough room for their J1 spin-offs. In terms of available powertrains, we still stand at a nominal 300/400/500 kW (402/536/670 hp) powered by a choice of LG Chem batteries rated at 80 and 95 kWh. All four wheels are driven via a two-speed transmission, the maximum torque one can play with from third upwards is 737 lb-ft, and as long as you don’t squeeze the energy cells out like a lemon (0-60 mph in 3.5 sec, 160 mph) the driving range should be in excess of 300 miles.
Even the self-described e-junkie Oliver Blume no longer intends to make the next Macan transfer from pump to plug over night. The plan is now to extend the life of the current model until 2024, which would almost certainly require a major facelift in 2021 or thereabout. Audi has already signaled that it will agree on a similar timing for the next Audi Q5, which the Macan III will again be twinned with.
The updated Macan, based on the familiar MLB matrix, and the all-new Macan BEV, derived from the brand-new PPE component set defined with Audi, are expected to come to market within six months of each other. Both offerings will likely overlap for about three years, if need be even longer. In case something goes terribly wrong in the future electric world, the new Macan could still ride on PPC, which is the combustion engine back-up of PPE.
An almost identical game plan applies to the full-size Cayenne, which is scheduled to undergo three iterations (including a coupé and two facelifts) before it finally retires in 2027. Ten years is a long life cycle for an SUV because you can only shed so much weight, and implementing improved aerodynamics that require sheet metal changes is even more difficult. That’s why the electric Cayenne—program E4, also part of the PPE family—must start as early as 2024 and extend the transition period to three or four years. No, there is no reward for guessing which pattern will be applied to the Panamera changeover. In an ideal world, Porsche would love to keep updating the current generation (G2) until it eventually bites the dust, but you probably cannot do this with an eleven-year old design—unless of course the unloved Sport Turismo gives way to the repeatedly hyped 929 coupé/cabrio which should consolidate demand. Right now though, a reskin (G3) in 2023 is more likely. Two years later, the all-electric Panamera G4 would be the fourth new Porsche never again to stop at a filling station—except for a coffee break.
What about the future sports cars in the making in the Weissach think tank, you ask? Same philosophy, but different timing, and for obvious reasons, different DNA. The 718 Cayman and Boxster launched in 2016 must soldier on until 2023 or 2024 without serious cosmetic operations, hybrid options, or AWD. The big bang follows in late 2022 when the battery-powered 983 is due to launch. This is a pure BEV, a total break with the past, sans alternative drivetrain option. Having said that, the outgoing combustion engine models—Boxster, Cayman, and Spyder—will be offered for at least twelve months alongside the high-tech newcomer. Apparently, the existing MMB platform can be upgraded to accommodate the totally different componentry. According to a senior engineer, there is thus no real need to proceed with the proposed all-new BEV matrix known as SPE, short for sports car platform electric. Dropping SPE would save approximately 25 percent of the cost-cutting target.
Although 983 is still in the final definition phase, we hear that there may be two coupé models, a Cayman replacement and a notably sportier high-performance derivative destined to slot in below the Carrera S/GTS. The second model would get bespoke coachwork inspired by the 918/919, and it would be priced in a similar bracket as the 911 turbo. While the Cayman E can reportedly be specced with one or two motors for a total of up to 536 hp, the Super E boasts three motors (two of them in the rear) for a peak output of 603 hp, sources say. The energy packs are said to deliver 100 and 125 kWh respectively. We expect a move to solid state accumulators from 2026 onwards, in combination with speed charging, ultra-quick battery regeneration, and Porsche-like repeat performance.
According to the Weissach grapevine, the first-ever all-electric 911 will debut in 2028 alongside the 992 replacement. Why wait so long? Because the plug-in hybrid is a convincing stopgap solution for many markets, because battery weight has to come down in sync with a more efficiency cell chemistry, and because even a planet-saving 911 must be an ultra-fast, hardcore piece of kit. Porsche is apparently convinced that it can deliver on all counts. After all, the latest master plan projects BEVs to exceed 85 percent of the sales total come 2028.
While the smart brand lives on borrowed time, a sub-A-class small-star Mercedes is taking shape
Smart is in the process of going 100 percent electric, but this doesn’t mean that the marque has a future. Quite the contrary: according to various sources, Renault is going to pull out once the ForFour/Twingo reaches the end of its cycle, Mercedes is not interested in keeping the Smart car brand going all by itself, and whether Geely may want to jump in and lift the business case to a more profitable new level remains to be seen. Right now, the internal plan is that smart will be wound up by 2026 at the earliest. The question remains whether Mercedes will pull out of the segment completely, or if the new CEO Ola Kallenius might be actively looking for options to keep the three-pointed star in the race against Mini and the Audi A1/Q1/City. The board needs to come to a conclusion by 2021 when it must sign off the next A-class generation due in 2025. If we read the smoke signals right, the current MFA2 architecture will be replaced by a fully scalable, all-new convergence layout which covers a much broader product spectrum that could also include a proper baby Benz.
At this point, strategists and product planners are evaluating at least four different options:
Version 2.0 of a fully electrified Smart brand funded with a strong partner like Geely, a concept inspired by the cooperation between Mini and Great Wall. Probability rating: 3/5. Why? Because it is difficult and expensive to ensure that the outcome, which would likely be produced in China, is a proper fit for the global market.
Add a decontented entry-level two- or three-door model to the current A-class portfolio. Probability rating: 1/5. Why? Too late, too expensive, too compromised. The no-frills A-Class coupé was stillborn for exactly these reasons.
Engineer the MFA3 component set so that it includes a proper baby Benz priced at least 15 percent below the least-expensive A-Class. Probability rating: 2/5. Why? MFA3 is unlikely to be sufficiently advanced, flexible enough, or affordable for the conversion to a predominantly electric future.
Go ahead with the innovative convergence matrix codenamed MX1, which could be stretched from whatever shape the small Mercedes will assume for the C-Class/GLC replacement. Probability rating: 5/5. Why? Because MX1 covers BEV, PHEV, and ICE with a bias on electric drive. In addition, it introduces a new level of modularity as well as extended economies of scale, with or without a partner.
Cooperation remains indeed an option—even though the tie-ups with Mitsubishi and Renault delivered mixed results. Last year, Mercedes and BMW discussed the pros and cons of teaming up with regard to MX1 and the bigger MX2 version, but to no avail. BMW ended the talks, thereby relegating the team from Stuttgart back to square one. Although the baby Benz has since dropped a notch or two on the agenda, electrification is a more urgent topic than ever, and so are new vehicle types tailor-made for metro mobility, commuter services, and innovative user models. The reinvented Mercedes née Smart is far from an approved program, but what is tentatively known as U-class (the U stands for urban & universal) has undergone various feasibility studies in combination with different design proposals. Under discussion are the following fully electric variations:
U-class City, a three-door hatch with five-door option, short and tall with extra-long (relative) wheelbase.
U-class Shuttle, an on-demand last-mile shared transportation device combined with up-market services such as exclusive use, autonomous driving where applicable, special delivery, and drop-off.
U-class Cargo, a compact panel van operating in a pool, shared by service providers with city access.
In frivolous moments, product planning even considered off-beat stuff like an emotional metro cruiser, a U-class Open Air, and a back-to-basics two-seater positioned between the unloved two-door A-class and the short-lived Smart coupé. In terms of content, the emphasis is split between the standardized e-componentry and bespoke abilities like the interface with Big Data, personalized services, and safety & convenience features. If the business case still looks good in 2021, the U-class may turn out to be one of the smartest cars Mercedes ever conceived.

Uncover Hidden Inventory: Coldwell Banker Can Predict Your Next Listing
In a real estate market facing a severe lack of homes for sale, agents could really use a secret weapon—something to shake up the status quo of the listing and selling game…something to help them compete in a low inventory market.
“Finding homes is the No. 1 challenge in my market,” says Andrew McGranaghan, a third-year agent with Coldwell Banker Wallace and Wallace, REALTORS® in Knoxville, Tenn. “Dealing with a lack of listings, handling multiple offers and appraisal issues and everything that comes along with a severe inventory shortage is frustrating for the buyer and stressful for the seller. We have a good market with a lot of activity, but low inventory creates a major challenge.”
Coldwell Banker believes it has come up with the solution: CBx Seller Leads. Introduced in May as an extension of the brand’s CBx Technology Suite, CBx Seller Leads identifies households that are most likely to sellbefore they raise their hand and reach out to an agent. According to Coldwell Banker Vice President of Product Development and Communications Zoe Horneck, the original CBx product, for years, offered the brand’s brokers and agents a way to harness big data, win listings, serve existing sellers and more easily find eager buyers. Now, Coldwell Banker has taken it to the next level, expanding the value of big data for real estate by adding proprietary algorithms and machine learning to the data in the original CBx product to fuel the entire CBx Technology Suite and give brokers and agents access to market intelligence they can’t get anywhere else.
Using Data to Predict the Future McGranaghan was among the beta testers for CBx Seller Leads. “Coldwell Banker used big data from previous sales, publicly available demographic information and other characteristics of sellers to compile a database that identified households that might sell soon, before they actually showed an interest in selling…meaning I could be the first agent to reach them. And there are a lot of advantages to being the first agent to contact the seller.”
CBx Seller Leads lets agents know which households might soon be ready to sell, and ranks those households by how likely they are to sell. CBx Seller Leads does this through two proprietary algorithms that use machine learning and aggregate data streams from multiple sources. What’s more, agents are clued into the reasons why someone may be headed toward selling, such as an empty nest, a new job or a baby on the way.
“Not only does the program predict someone’s next move; it gives agents context to personalize their interaction with the homeowner to help seal the deal,” says Horneck. “The same data that drives our original CBx Listing Experience tool now provides a way to rate households in terms of how likely they are to list—and how soon. This allows our brokers to distribute high-value prospects to agents who can start nurturing those leads and developing them into sellers.”
The driving force behind the creation of CBx Seller Leads was agent need, something of top priority to Horneck given her background not only in digital customer experience, but also as a licensed real estate agent. While the first offering in the CBx Technology Suite was met with great enthusiasm, Coldwell Banker Real Estate continued to look for new ways to turn the raw data into valuable insights and information to meet the needs of the network.
“We continued to look for ways to make agents more productive,” says Horneck. “On top of that, we were faced with the industry issue of low inventory. We found that the old methods of generating leads were falling short. Just working your sphere of influence and using paid lead-gen services wasn’t delivering. We knew we had the ultimate currency: data. If we could project when someone was likely to move, it would help fill that listing gap for agents.”
Felicia Hengle, president of Ohio Operations for Coldwell Banker Schmidt Family of Companies, understands this firsthand. Overseeing 15 offices and 410 agents, she’s acutely aware of the challenges today’s real estate professionals are up against.
“Market conditions have been favorable for a while here, but there continues to be a shortage in seller inventory,” Hengle explains. “One of the reasons why CBx Seller Leads is so timely, and certainly a value proposition to our agents, is that it allows them to identify sellers before they raise their hands. Using predictive analytics and big data to put seller leads in the hands of agents is transformative. Plus, these leads are free. Agents will buy leads all day long, but these are actually far more qualified.”
One of Hengle’s top agents participated in the beta test for CBx Seller Leads and was blown away. A specialist in the luxury market, Anthony Colantuono was also an early adopter of the CBx Listing Experience; according to Hengle, “it’s the one thing in his arsenal that helps him get business every single time.”
The CBx Listing Experience app is used to help agents win listings with an interactive pricing component that allows for listing-specific adjustments based on the seller’s input regarding upgrades and special features of their home. “The seller can be involved with the agent in obtaining a price for their home,” says Hengle. “Then, using big data and predictive analytics, the app can help identify where the most likely buyer is going to come from, allowing the agent to better target their marketing and drive those potential buyers to the property, decreasing market time. Anthony is so impressed by the accuracy of the pricing component, that he actually goes out and teaches other agents how to use the CBx Listing Experience.”
Now, with the addition of CBx Seller Leads, the CBx Technology Suite drives even more business for agents. And the proof is in the pudding. Coldwell Banker piloted CBx Seller Leads in 16 different markets; during the pilot, leads converted at twice the industry average.
Making Marketing Matter “Based on their online behavior, CBx Seller Leads identifies the likelihood of a potential seller turning into an active lead in a given period of time,” explains Hengle. “It might not be today or next month, but CBx Seller Leads gives you a predictive way to stay in contact with the prospect. If an agent is very listings-driven, they can really showcase their skillset, demonstrating how they market listings and what they do to get them sold.”
CBx Seller Leads goes beyond identifying potential sellers by getting granular about who they are. Prospects are grouped by profiles, allowing brokers to distribute the leads to agents who have expertise in working with particular types of sellers. “If one broker has an agent who works really well with empty nesters, for instance, the leads for that profile can be assigned to that expert agent,” explains Horneck. “The agent would then start nurturing those leads immediately, whether that be by knocking on doors, making phone calls or sending letters and postcards. We like to think of it this way: We provide all the accessories—you pick what you wear for the day.”
For McGranaghan, a program like this helps him see real ROI on his marketing efforts. “As a REALTOR®, you’re trying to figure out what will work with marketing and advertising, and this is light-years ahead of the typical throwing darts at a board. With CBx Seller Leads, you can be extremely targeted and very personalized in your marketing approach based on the information Coldwell Banker provides. You can design a letter or a call campaign based on why it’s a good time to sell and be really targeted in your messaging. It’s far more strategic than the current methods out there.”
The ability to focus his prospecting strategies gives McGranaghan an important competitive edge. “You’ll see much better results from your advertising and call campaigns,” he explains. “If I reach more sellers, but actually make fewer calls, that’s a huge win. Now I can go out and sell without spending so much time prospecting.”
The First One There, Wins The end game, of course, is winning listings in a market environment where homes for sale are sparse, and that’s usually all about getting there first. That’s what makes CBx Seller Leads stand apart—it allows agents to not just get there first, but actually before everyone else.
“There are no triggers,” explains Horneck. “Typically, with other paid lead-gen programs, a potential seller will raise their hand by requesting an estimate on their home or refinancing. Those are triggers that would set off that lead. We don’t use triggers. We use data to find similarities with selling behavior, then use profile types to know how to market to that prospective seller.”
According to Hengle, this presents a significant competitive advantage for agents. “They’re going to be a step ahead by having already established contact with the seller before the seller even goes out to market,” she explains. “Most sellers interview only one agent and go with that agent, so if you’re the first one there, your chances are exponentially increased.”
McGranaghan agrees. “[CBx Seller Leads] allows you to establish yourself as the local expert so that when the homeowners finally come to the realization that this is the right time to downsize, for example, they think of you first. It’s so important to be the first person to reach a potential seller before they’ve shown an interest in selling. By the time they get on Zillow, it’s too late to establish yourself as the expert.”
Building Business on Many Levels CBx Seller Leads is also a great tool for buyer’s agents looking to break into selling. A broker can send them a few seller leads to work and help them quickly get productive on the listing side of the business.
The program also serves as an important recruiting and retention tool for brokers, whether to help new licensees hit the ground running or target listing specialists on agent teams. “It’s a way for experienced agents to increase their sphere of influence, and something brokers and managers can talk about when bringing in potential recruits,” says Horneck.
Hengle concurs. “From a leadership perspective, this is a powerful recruiting and retention tool. It’s a secret weapon,” she says. “No other broker has a technology platform like this. It’s unmatched in the industry.”
Simply put, for McGranaghan, CBx Seller Leads is a game changer. “In a competitive market like this, with listings being key, you have to list to last. You control the market if you control the listings. Any tool like this that gets you in touch with sellers before other agents is a huge advantage. That, combined with the brand recognition of Coldwell Banker, helps agents win more listings, which in turn, drives buyer traffic to you from having that listing, and you can pick up multiple sales from each seller.”
At press time, Horneck was excited to start hearing feedback on the national rollout. “Feedback is really big for us. Our team can’t wait to learn from it and see how everyone is using it,” she says. “We want to optimize the tool as much as possible and continue to build out our tech suite to help our agents and brokers.”
“Ultimately, technology driven by big data and predictive analytics is vital to long-term success,” says Hengle. “At its core, real estate is still a relationship-based business, but technology now drives so much of what we do. The most successful agents use technology as a tool to propel them to success, and something like CBx Seller Leads gets them in the door—first, even—and then they can blow away prospective sellers with their know-how and expertise. If you’re a real estate company that has not embraced cutting-edge technology, you will be left behind. There’s so much data and information available to us now. Successful companies are the ones that use it to set themselves apart from the competition. With CBx Seller Leads, the cutting-edge technology is here and available to us. Embracing it is key to sustaining and growing your business.”

Dr. Samuel Epstein, 91, Dies
youtube
By Dr. Mercola
Dr. Samuel S. Epstein, former chairman of the Cancer Prevention Coalition and a pioneer in cancer prevention, has passed away at the age of 91. As his son Julian told The New York Times, “He walked the walk”1 in terms of avoiding exposure to carcinogens, and he was an outspoken critic of household products that contained cancer-causing ingredients — and the lax regulations and conflicts of interest that often allow them to remain on the market.
“He was never shy in choosing his targets, which included the American Cancer Society [ACS] and the National Cancer Institute, which he accused of potential conflicts of interest because they had corporate sponsors,” The New York Times reported.2 Indeed, I’ve referenced Epstein many times over the years and we met and talked on several occasions.
When I interviewed him in 2010 (see the interview above), we spoke about several controversial health dangers that receive little attention in the mainstream press, including nanoparticles used in cosmetics and recombinant (genetically engineered) bovine growth hormone (rBGH) in milk. Epstein was instrumental in helping to spread the word that chemicals cause cancer and he sought to bring corporations to task for their role in the cancer epidemic.
What’s more, he was a champion for cancer prevention and wanted to spread the word that most cancers are preventable if you avoid exposure to carcinogens. And for the record, while 1 out of every 4 deaths in the U.S. is due to cancer,3 Epstein’s was not — he passed away from cardiac arrest March 18, 2018.
Epstein Spread the Word About Little-Known Carcinogens
Epstein was adamant about addressing the environmental components of cancer and wanted to spread the word about avoidable toxic exposures. Some of his life’s work included bringing the following carcinogens into the public eye so people could make informed decisions about whether or not to risk exposure.
rBGH Milk
Cows are injected with rBGH to boost their milk production. rBGH is a synthetic version of natural bovine somatotropin (BST), a hormone produced in cows' pituitary glands. Science has proven this practice of injecting cows with rBGH, although profitable to the industrialized dairy industry, comes at a high price to you, as well as to dairy cows.
Monsanto developed the recombinant version from genetically engineered E. coli bacteria and marketed it under the brand name "Posilac." It sold the brand to Eli Lilly and Company (specifically their animal health division, Elanco) in 2008.4 According to Elanco, a cow supplemented with Posilac produces an average of 10 more pounds of milk per day,5 which explains why rBGH is the largest selling dairy animal drug in America.6
Yet, it’s banned in Canada, Japan, Australia, New Zealand and the European Union because of its dangers to human health, which include a potentially increased risk of cancer in humans along with medical problems in cows. RBGH increases milk production by increasing levels of the hormone insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1).
IGF-1 is a potent hormone that acts on your pituitary gland to induce powerful metabolic and endocrine effects, including cell growth and replication. Elevated IGF-1 levels are associated with breast and other cancers. When cows are injected with rBGH, their levels of IGF-1 increase. In one of Epstein’s studies, a sixfold increase in IGF-1 levels in milk were found as early as seven days following rBGH treatment, with results suggesting it could be a risk factor in both breast and gastrointestinal cancers.7
The synthetic hormone is also known to cause at least 16 medical conditions in cows, including infertility, lameness, hoof disorders and a shortened life span.8 In the U.S., no labeling is required for rBGH milk, but you can find brands that state the milk is produced without it. Organic milk is also rBGH free.
In what is perhaps a further sign that rBGH is falling out of favor, Elanco announced in late 2017 that it’s trying to sell Posilac and its August, Georgia, manufacturing facility.9 For more information on this topic, I recommend reading Epstein's 2006 book, “What's In Your Milk?”
Mammograms
Epstein started warning people about the dangers of mammography in the 1990s, stating:
"The premenopausal breast is highly sensitive to radiation, each 1 rad exposure increasing breast cancer risk by about 1 percent, with a cumulative 10 percent increased risk for each breast over a decade's screening ...
The high sensitivity of the breast, especially in young women, to radiation-induced cancer was known by 1970. Nevertheless, the establishment then screened some 300,000 women with X-ray dosages so high as to increase breast cancer risk by up to 20 percent in women aged 40 to 50 who were mammogramed annually."
The fact is that the ionizing radiation used by mammography to discern breast tumors is a risk factor for the development of breast cancer. Additionally, if you do have a malignant tumor, the crushing compression of your breast could potentially cause it to spread. In a 2015 study published in JAMA Internal Medicine, researchers concluded mammography screenings lead to unnecessary treatments while having virtually no impact on the number of deaths from breast cancer.
A positive correlation between breast cancer screening and breast cancer incidence was indeed found, but there was no positive correlation with mortality.10 Epstein described mammography screening as a “profit-driven technology posing risks compounded by unreliability.”
In research published in the International Journal of Health Services, he stated that “annual clinical breast examination (CBE) by a trained health professional, together with monthly breast self-examination (BSE)” is a practical alternative that’s “safe, at least as effective and low in cost.”11
Personal Care Products
In his 2009 book “Toxic Beauty: How Cosmetics and Personal Care Products Endanger Your Health,” Epstein details many of the toxic ingredients found in common cosmetics and personal care products like lipstick, hairspray, facial moisturizer and deodorant.
His crusade to get the word out about their toxicity started even earlier, in the 1990s, when he held a news conference listing a “dirty dozen” list of household products he found to be toxic. Among them were talcum powder, a foundation makeup, hair conditioner and hair color. Dr. Epstein also had serious concerns about cosmetic products containing tiny nanoparticles, which can readily penetrate your skin, stating:
“There is no labeling of the warning at all of the dangers of these nanoparticles. Instead they are touted as reducing wrinkling and firming up the skin surface. However, the use of nanoparticles in cosmeceuticals, whether they are sham cosmeceuticals or whether they’re bona fide cosmeceuticals, poses an extraordinarily dangerous and unrecognized public health hazard.
Nanoparticles, because of their ultramicroscopic size, readily penetrate the skin, can invade underlying blood vessels, get into the general blood stream and produce distant toxic effects. We already have evidence of this, including toxic effects in the brain, degenerative disorders in the brain and nerve damage. So we’re dealing here with one of the most dangerous types of products in the whole cosmetic industry.”
Epstein Exposed Conflicts of Interest in Government Cancer Organizations
Epstein didn’t shy away from controversy and helped to expose the many conflicts of interest at play in government cancer organizations that were supposedly protecting public health but were actually beholden to industry. In the 2011 report, “American Cancer Society — More Interested in Accumulating Wealth Than Saving Lives,”12 for instance, Epstein plainly lays to bare the many conflicts of interest that hamper the effectiveness of this organization.
Among them were contributions in excess of $100,000 from companies responsible for polluting the environment with carcinogens or selling products containing toxic or carcinogenic ingredients. This includes industry funding from pharmaceutical, junk food, biotech and petrochemical companies, among others. Epstein was among the first to highlight ACS’ close ties with the mammography industry — five radiologists served as ACS presidents.
In addition, Epstein noted, “In its every move, the ACS reflects the interests of the major manufacturers of mammography, films and machines. These include Siemens, DuPont, General Electric, Eastman Kodak and Piker, which allocate considerable funds to the ACS.”13 The report also highlighted ACS ties to the pesticide and pharmaceutical industries, along with their long history of siding with industry rather than protecting the public from potential cancer risks. According to Epstein’s report:14
In 1993, ACS trivialized pesticides as a cause of childhood cancer. The ACS also reassured the public that carcinogenic pesticide residues in food are safe, even for babies.
In 1994, ACS published a study designed to reassure women on the safety of dark permanent hair dyes, and to trivialize risk of fatal and nonfatal cancers, particularly Non-Hodgkin lymphoma, as documented in over six prior reports.
In 2002, ACS initiated the "Look Good ... Feel Better" program to teach women cancer patients beauty techniques to help restore their appearance and self-image during chemotherapy and radiation treatment but failed to disclose the wide range of carcinogenic ingredients in toiletries and cosmetics.
Continuing Epstein’s Legacy
One of the best ways to honor Epstein’s life work as a champion of cancer prevention is to continue to spread the word about how to avoid or reduce your exposure to carcinogens in your daily life. The Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) requires that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) compile and keep a current list of chemical substances manufactured or processed in the U.S.
That list includes about 85,000 chemicals,15 but even the EPA is largely in the dark about what that actually means for people’s health and the environment. Very few chemicals on the market are tested for safety, but even those that are are not necessarily safe. Part of this is because safety testing is typically done on just one chemical at a time, and under laboratory conditions. The way you’re actually exposed to chemicals — in combination and under countless different real-world scenarios — may increase their toxicity exponentially.
Research published in the journal Carcinogenesis also found that chemicals deemed “safe” on their own can cause cancer when combined, even at low doses, with researchers noting, “Our analysis suggests that the cumulative effects of individual (noncarcinogenic) chemicals acting on different pathways, and a variety of related systems, organs, tissues and cells could plausibly conspire to produce carcinogenic synergies.”16
Experts agree that in order to gauge the true risk of a chemical, it should be tested in combination with others to more closely replicate real-world exposures. Yet, U.S. National Toxicology Program data suggests testing the interactions between just 25 chemicals for 13 weeks would require 33 million experiments and cost $3 trillion.17
Jonathan Latham, Ph.D., cofounder and executive director of the Bioscience Resource Project, pointed out that even if such experiments were possible, it’s likely that no chemical would be deemed truly “safe.”18 So what can you do? Until change occurs on a global scale, you can significantly limit your exposure by keeping a number of key principles in mind.
Eat a diet focused on locally grown, fresh and ideally organic whole foods. Processed and packaged foods are a common source of chemicals, both in the food itself and the packaging. Wash fresh produce well, especially if it’s not organically grown.
Choose pastured, sustainably raised meats and dairy to reduce your exposure to hormones, pesticides and fertilizers. Avoid milk and other dairy products that contain the genetically engineered recombinant bovine growth hormone (rBGH or rBST).
Rather than eating conventional or farm-raised fish, which are often heavily contaminated with PCBs and mercury, supplement with a high-quality krill oil, or eat fish that is wild-caught and at little risk of contamination, such as wild caught Alaskan salmon, anchovies and sardines.
Buy products that come in glass bottles rather than plastic or cans, as chemicals can leach out of plastics (and plastic can linings), into the contents; be aware that even “BPA-free” plastics typically leach endocrine-disrupting chemicals that are just as bad for you as bisphenol-A (BPA).
Store your food and beverages in glass, rather than plastic, and avoid using plastic wrap.
Use glass baby bottles.
Replace your nonstick pots and pans with ceramic or glass cookware.
Filter your tap water for both drinking and bathing. If you can only afford to do one, filtering your bathing water may be more important, as your skin readily absorbs contaminants.
Look for products made by companies that are Earth-friendly, animal-friendly, sustainable, certified organic and GMO-free. This applies to everything from food and personal care products to building materials, carpeting, paint, baby items, furniture, mattresses and others.
Use a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter to remove contaminated house dust. This is one of the major routes of exposure to flame-retardant chemicals.
When buying new products such as furniture, mattresses or carpet padding, consider buying chemical-free varieties containing naturally less flammable materials, such as leather, wool, cotton, silk and Kevlar.
Avoid stain- and water-resistant clothing, furniture and carpets to avoid perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs).
Make sure your baby's toys are BPA-free, such as pacifiers, teething rings and anything your child may be prone to suck or chew on — even books, which are often plasticized. It’s advisable to avoid all plastic, especially flexible varieties.
Use natural cleaning products or make your own. Avoid those containing 2-butoxyethanol (EGBE) and methoxydiglycol (DEGME) — two toxic glycol ethers that can compromise your fertility and cause fetal harm.
Switch over to organic toiletries, including shampoo, toothpaste, antiperspirants and cosmetics. EWG’s Skin Deep database can help you find personal care products that are free of phthalates and other potentially dangerous chemicals.19
Replace your vinyl shower curtain with a fabric one or use glass doors.
Replace feminine hygiene products (tampons and sanitary pads) with safer alternatives.
Look for fragrance-free products. One artificial fragrance can contain hundreds — even thousands — of potentially toxic chemicals. Avoid fabric softeners and dryer sheets, which contain a mishmash of synthetic chemicals and fragrances.
