The Balan Wonderworld demo has some good moments and also some things which raised concerns for me, such as the camera, and speed at which you can change between costumes. I’ve had a chance to play it ahead of the demo release, and Chris Hyde quizzed me about it. It contains some action from the first act as well as a boss fight, and some other chapters, too. It’s rated E10+.The Balan Wonderworld demo is hitting every major console this week, and it’s intended to give people a chance to play Yuji Naka (the guy behind those Sonic games and Square Enix’s brand new IP.
#Balan wonderworld gameplay Pc
Based on what we’ve played in the demo, however, we don’t have much confidence that Wonderworld will be a worthy co-op adventure.īalan Wonderworld will launch on PC (Steam), PlayStation, Switch, and Xbox on March 26. It’s possible later levels are much more interesting, and maybe costumes can be combined in interesting ways. The final game includes 12 worlds and 80 costumes. It feels like a step backward for the evolving platformer genre. Levels feel cramped, flat, and lifeless, without any visual flair or interesting features beyond platforms, switches, and pits. Perhaps it’s early level blues, but nothing we saw excited us. These core problems could be easier to swallow if the levels were more interesting. But in a 3D platformer that supports co-op, trying to remain on screen is incredibly frustrating for the second player. In contrast, Balan Wonderworld uses a much lower, more intimate camera angle centered on the first player, as in third-person shooters and action-RPGs. Better co-op action games, like the Skylanders series, use a more overheard camera, making it easier to accommodate multiple player characters. The other problem with local co-op is the third-person camera. And worse, only a single player could grab it at a time, making the other, costume-less player effectively useless during the fight. Thankfully there was a costume pickup right outside the boss fight, but it’s not particularly fun to constantly retreat back and grab it. The boss could only be damaged by the wolf costume’s spin jump, but by the time we reached it, we had only one costume between us. This was particularly problematic during the demo’s only boss fight. None of these costumes are compelling or interesting, and combat is still mostly limited to jumping on enemies, Mario-style. A gear costume functioned like a gate key, requiring the costume to open gear-based doors – and losing it (or any costume) can require an annoying amount of backtracking. The wolf spin can destroy blocks, while the rabbit can hover in place for a short while to reach further platforms. Most of the costumes in the first area simply replace the jump button with a slightly different kind of jump. Unfortunately the costumes are weirdly rare, aren’t terribly impressive, and exclusive to one player at a time when playing co-op – meaning the first player to grab the icon gets the costume. We can store up to three costumes and freely switch between them, but getting hit or taking damage removes the costume. A wolf costume grants a spinning tornado jump, while a dragon-lizard can shoot fireballs. Leo and Emma are limited to running and jumping, but throughout each level we acquire costumes that grant a single ability. With single player you can choose either character, and in local co-op you play as both. Each area has an overarching story, like the farmer whose livelihood is destroyed by a tornado, though I didn’t get a sense how that’s incorporated in the few levels available in the demo. They’re magically drawn into the world of Wonderworld, which consists of several themed areas, each with multiple levels, such as a farm, or a forest. The story stars young heroes, Leo and Emma.

After playing the free demo, however, I come away with nothing short of shocking disappointment with its outdated gameplay and boring level design.

The cinematic intro movie is whimsical and fantastical, and we confidently placed the game on our list of most anticipated games of the year. It’s their first game under their new Balan Company studio, which is an official subsidiary of veteran publisher Square Enix. It’s helmed by Yuji Naka and Naoto Ohsmia, two of the original creators of Sonic the Hedgehog. Upcoming 3D platformer Balan Wonderworld has an impressive resume.

There have been some interesting bits of Sonic-related news lately! This is the post where I comment on them.
youtube
Sonic Superstars
Finally! A new Sonic sidescroller! It's been too long.
Admittedly, in a perfect world, I would've wanted a Sonic Mania 2, but I'll take a 2.5D game with all new zones for sure, especially when the art direction for it looks this nice. And four-player co-op with Sonic, Tails, Knuckles AND Amy playable? Hell yeah. Also Fang is back, and there's a new funny little guy designed by Naoto Ohshima! Wow!
There's been some concern over how this will play, particularly after it was discovered it's being co-developed by Ohshima's company Arzest. They're perhaps best known for some mediocre Nintendo games like Yoshi's New Island, Hey! Pikmin, and the 3DS version of Mario & Sonic 2016, as well as, of course... co-production on Balan Wonderworld. The thing is, Arzest is very much one of those "silent collaborator" type companies. They're hired gun developers who do the grunt work on projects for other studios without being put in the spotlight. The quality of their games isn't really up to Arzest, who are presumably just doing whatever they're directed to do with whatever resources they're allotted. It's up to their publishers.
Based on the side-by-side physics comparisons that have been going around Twitter, it seems clear that SOMEONE on this project is invested in making Superstars play just like the classic games. I'm admittedly no Sonic physics purist, but the extended gameplay footage (with placeholder music from Sonic 4 Episode 2) looks spot on to me. Christian Whitehead also seems to know things about the game, stating that "the Mania physics were indeed fully translated to modern 3D." It seems that at the very least they consulted his previous work on this, regardless of whether or not he's actually involved.
But even if this ends up not being true, honestly, I'll take a new Sonic sidescroller that's "just okay" if it has all new zones, nice art direction, and good music. If Sonic 4 had checked those three boxes but played exactly the same, I would've been way more into it.
youtube
Really, it's the music that has me most concerned. Obviously we all love Jun Senoue, but hearing he's trying to do "classic-style" music again makes me worry that he's gonna bust out the fake Genesis synths. I'm actually a weirdo who likes the Classic Sonic stage themes in Forces, but those weren't by Senoue, whose otherwise very strong compositions were really hurt by the sound palette chosen for Sonic 4. Like many others, I'd prefer it if Superstars went for the new jack swing sound of Sonic Mania - and considering Tee Lopes is contributing, hopefully he's allowed to tap into that sound a little. But I'd be open to other styles, too. I just really don't think a game with HD visuals should be going for a fake 16-bit sound.
But yeah, overall, I'm looking forward to Superstars. I think we've needed something like this for a long time, and I'm glad they're finally doing it.

Sega union update
We don't have many details on this, but the newly forming Sega of America union, AEGIS-CWA, is facing resistance from management. Apparently some form of "anti-union campaign" (their wording) is underway, also described more worryingly as "relentless attempts at union busting." We unfortunately don't have more details right now, and it seems like no news outlets are doing anything with this story.
This behavior is unfortunately not surprising, even from a company that purports progressive values like Sega. Remember kids: corporations are not your friends.
In the face of this, the members of AEGIS-CWA are still trying to convince management to stay neutral with the help of their fan petition that raised over 4300 signatures. At the time of writing this, their first union election is also underway. I continue to wish them luck in their efforts. We're currently seeing a wave of unionization attempts the likes of which we've never seen before, and I have to hope that at least some of them stick. We need real change in the game industry, an industry where if you're able to stick around longer than ten years without burning out then you're one of the lucky ones.
Okay now time for the thing y'all really wanted me to comment on
Penders says he's leaving Twitter
Earlier this month, Penders announced: "Since Twitter is promoting anti-trans nonsense, I can’t in good conscience continue to be associated with it much longer."
He's certainly not wrong. Elon's been doubling down on his transphobic fearmongering, and Twitter's already weak moderation of hate speech has only gotten even weaker. (They quietly removed their rule against intentional misgendering in April.) But based on the date he tweeted this, I assume Ken was referring specifically to Elon promoting Matt Walsh's shit ass transphobic documentary, which Elon personally allowed to be hosted on Twitter in its entirety. I'd quit the site myself if it didn't feel necessary to promote my work and stay connected with my peers. (Both the furry community and the gamedev sphere are very much centered on Twitter.) Assuming Ken does actually leave in protest, hey, good on him.
There's been some surprise over the fact that he's apparently a trans ally, but for all his many flaws, Penders has always been your average baby boomer Democrat. Half his tweets are about hoping Trump goes to jail. He has many outdated views that he refuses to unpack (I am not going to devolve this post into a catalog of stupid shit he's tweeted), but he at least understands that "progressive" is a thing you should try to be. He's that uncle who you wouldn't go to for a nuanced view on queer identity, but like, he knows trans people exist and are discriminated against and that that's bad.
Of course, instead of just leaving Twitter, he's announced that he intends to leave by September 30th, after which point people will have to contact him via his website. The idea of someone scheduling a date four months in the future on which they're going to leave a social media platform in protest is very, very funny to me. I wonder if he has something planned for September that needs to happen first - like, you know, maybe finally releasing at least a portion of The Lara-Su Chronicles?
Lord knows when the hell we'll be able to read the first part of the comic, but in the near future you WILL be able to buy THIS on a t-shirt!
Tumblr media
Wait did he change that one character from Anthony Mackie to Ernie Hudson???
Tumblr media
Anyway, my one hope is just that even if he does leave Twitter, he doesn't delete his account. His tweets have long been one of my most important sources for behind the scenes info on Archie Sonic, even if you do have to take some of it with a grain of salt. Gallagher and Bollers are simply not going on Twitter and talking about this stuff on a regular basis like Ken does. With so many old forums and fan sites now gone, only partially preserved by the Wayback Machine, Ken deleting his Twitter would truly be the burning of the library of Alexandria for old Archie Sonic behind the scenes drama.
You know, assuming he actually does leave Twitter.
...
Aaaand that about does it for Sonic-related news lately, I think? Okay, back to my hiatus. I would still like to get back to updating sometime this year, but I'm still in recovery mode following SLARPG's launch, so I can't promise when that'll be. I appreciate everyone's continued patience!

Show of Hands... Who Likes Balan Wonderworld?
The gameplay is shit and the camera movements are janky. Like, any time I was trying to look around, the camera forced itself to look at the protagonist or just zoom in to the point I couldn't see anything. And the costumes... yeah, I don't need to say anything. The one-button system is so dumb, especially when the game takes away your ability to jump. (Pumpkin Puncher, I'm looking at you - you made me fall off the ledge into the abyss way too many times.)
However...
I can't help but adore what the story was trying to be. The idea of a magical being helping people overcome trauma and other various personal struggles is really intriguing. I really love all of the characters' designs, the boss fights had potential to be good, and Balan is just a really cool and charismatic character.
I also found out that the voice actors for Lance and Balan are, respectively, Merlin and Dr. Roman from Fate/Grand Order. (Balan's VA is also the Japanese voice of Hikaru Hitachiin from Ouran High School Host Club, which was one of the first anime I ever watched, so eee ^^)
I don't know, maybe I'm crazy, but I really enjoy the characters and premise of Balan Wonderworld.
So here's my top five favorite characters in Balan Wonderworld:
Balan (naturally)
Emma Cole (The female protagonist)
Iben Bia (The girl who didn't want to love again after losing her parents)
Cass Milligan (The girl with the kitten)
Attilio Caccini (The clown who fell in love with the princess)

regarding the recent events with sonics co creator being arrested I feel like sonic is just Cursed. Not like I’m the “ew that is o cursed who would make that” more in the “some hod decided that if that Blue Hedgehog does ANY GOOD I will rain pain upon him and anything so much as related to him even in the slightest”
yknow what time for a little bit of rambling rants my mutuals:
anything that even slightly is connected or embodies sonic is just as cursed as him
Some Examples include:
Hatsune Miku: a canonically 19year old Vocaloid that after 2 months of popularity was basically erased from the web cause people searched her up so much. And obviously the uncles went apeshit as well
Balan Wonderworld: Made by the Co creator of sonic that got arrested is a really nice looking game and apparently a good book as well and is in the middle of a redemption arc. However after its demo got released people belittled it over its glitchy gameplay and never gave it the chance it deserved
Friday Night Funkin: it’s an odd one to be listed since FNF isn’t a Sega Game but Canonically Boyfriends older sister is Hatsune Miku (now age 20 for lore reasons ) and you can see where this is going. For a while the community was fairly stable via Mods since the official game. Then Sonic.Exe’s mod came around-
Real Quick: Sonic.EXE his Creepypasta was so bad originally that people decided to make better versions and he has officially be acknowledged by Sega a few times now. His community is terrible which provides context to what’s to come for FNF. It’s most iconic Comtroversy is the Revie Controversy (Go look it up for extended context but to sum it up Revie was accused of ERP with a minor when it was really a 2 year difference when Revie was 16 and the one that pushed her into it was 14 and A man by Rightburst Ultra who is an ass framed her for even worse things got her kicked and basically filled the Mod with so many OC’s it killed it)
back to FNF thanks to that one mod it helped kickstart so much controversy it might have killed the main game. But since the main game isn’t A. Finished or B. Have anyone on Kawaiisprites team that done something it’s still living being updated slowly but because of that it continues to have bad things going down in the Mod community.
This Next one is a stretch but I has explanation for it:
Steven Universe: Now you might be asking yourself “My fellow Mutual why the Fuck is this show on here? It isn’t even connected to Sonic!”
and you would be right EXCEPT Sonic Booms tv show was On CN as was Steven Universe and Stevens whole nature of wanting to save the Earth and trusting nature kinda reminds me of sonic. Plus He can Go his own equivalent of SSJRosé and sonic has his super form which looks like Super Saiyan and they both can Achieve these forms via Magic Rocks ( Stevens Gem and the Chaos Emeralds)
okay time for the Cursed Reasoning:
Steven Universe has a pretty bad fanbase (Tumblr seems Chill about it so I think it was a Twitter thing but I don’t know about the past tho) and it was so bad it nearly killed a girl cause they didn’t draw Rose Quartz right. For more context that girl was already going through something and the fanbase wasn’t helping matters. They weren’t the cause but they weren’t a solution.
The show was always belittled as people weren’t happy with Steven being a pacifist and the shows inconsistent art style ( I’m a fan of the show and I never really saw a problem with either I’m just saying the the General hate for it is) to the point where people make art and jokes saying that other show characters would go out of their way to insult him (See the Fnf Mod Roasting on a Friday night for a recent ish example) and that these other characters are better at solving problems than him (even tho most characters of their own shows Like Mordecai and Rigby cause their own problems 90% of the time and they are usually solved after a bunch of people die. Adventure time gets a pass as most of the civilization and deity’s cause each other problems and it isn’t always Finns Duty to solve those ones. Most of Stevens problems were because of his mothers and they became his problems cause she died) and that CN itself hated the fact that there was so much LGBTQ energy at the time they tried to get it cancelled multiple times (Garnets Wedding being the final straw) and that people thought it was Rebecca Sugars way of showing propaganda. Etc you get the gist it’s like the Animation Sonic the hedgehog. Anytime something goes good for it a bitch slap follows
(Sorry for the especially long rant about Steven Universe it just felt like the Most attacked without it being connected to Sega Directly)
even Sega itself gets no respect as everyone assumes that Sega is lazy meanwhile the workers run themselves ragged meanwhile Game freak is getting a nicer treatment even though it has like Triple the workers than Sega
The point is I feel like some fan of Mario or just someone that hated Hedgehogs made a deal with the devil to make Sonic and anything that even shared his energy have major problems and hopefully this year might start to break A Sonics Cycle and B. Whatever curse it has

As part of the platforming and exploration based challenges in Balan Wonderworld, the player is able to acquire a multitude of Costumes that alter gameplay in some way, providing unique changes in movement, attacking, or even puzzle solving. Whenever the player takes damage or falls out of the stage, they lose whatever costume they are wearing, and upon losing all of the Costumes, are unable to continue playing. This makes the Costumes serve multiple purposes, not just as a way to advance, but also as an alternative lives system, ensuring that a Game Over can only occur if the player loses all of their Costumes in rapid succession.

We spent the evening playing Punky Skunk on the Playstation, as one does. It's a surprisingly nice and breezy little plattformer aimed towards a younger audience. In that way it doesn't really pose that much of a challenge to us as gamer brained adults, but I think it would be a fun experience for a kid at the time. It also has this mechanic where you can pick up different suits and then switch between the one you've got equipped and your regular form. Kind of reminded us a bit about Balan Wonderworld funnily enough, since Punky can't jump in some of the suits.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I found it a bit interesting though to read that it apparently got a very negative reception at the time, and was supposedly panned for it's presentation, gameplay and music. Which is kind of strange to me. I get that a lot of people wanted 3D games at the time, but Punky Skunk has such a colourful presentation, cute sprites and a ton of nice animations. The music too is very pleasant, and even has some notable names behind it. I get the feeling that sometimes gamers just have trouble grasping that something wasn't made specifically with them in mind. Which is a shame.
Next Generation apparently gave it a scathing 1 out of 5 and compared it unfavourably to Zero the Kamikaze Squirrel. Ouf! I genuinely have trouble seeing why anyone would have it in their heart to be too negative about this cute little plattformer for babies. I don't know, it just seems a bit harsh to me, haha.
Like who could hate this little rascal?

Have you played Balan Wonderworld? I genuinely love the game, and while it's got its issues, I genuinely do not get the sheer amount of hate behind it. It's a decent puzzle-platformer IMO. If you've played it, what are your thoughts on it?
youtube
I streamed about two hours of Balan right before I moved out of my apartment earlier this year. I always intended to go back to it and stream more and never did.
I also played the demo when that came out, so I've played the game both before and after it was patched. I think the patch does a lot to tighten the game up so it doesn't feel so sluggish.
It's a charming, interesting game, with great character designs... but... I dunno. I don't hate it, but there's something really strange about it, even after the patch.
It is very, very clear that Yuji Naka and Naoto Ohshima were trying to recapture the magic of NiGHTS. In terms of core gameplay they are nothing alike, but there's a lot of design similarities in terms of visual style, vibe and intent.
But none of it is as tight or as polished. It really does have the feel of, like, a student project or an Xbox Live Arcade game from 2010.
Which goes in to Yuji Naka's complaints, right. That he was pushing to have the game delayed and both Square-Enix and Naoto Ohshima conspired to dump the game and run. Whether or not that's actually true is up for debate, but at the very least, it's an official admission that the game needed more work and did not get it.
It is a lot of interesting ideas and interesting designs and interesting worlds but it fumbles the execution. I'll play more of it some day but obviously I haven't been in any rush.
People probably dogpile on it a little more than it deserves, though. I think there's room for saying "it's not that bad." But I also say that as someone who loves NiGHTS. In the wider scope of gaming, NiGHTS is sometimes seen as kind of a strange and obtuse game by the mainstream, I think.
So who knows, maybe Balan did accomplish what it set out to be.

seriously though it's insane that there's not even a full year between FFXVI and FFVII Rebirth
the two games are night and fucking day, to the point that it's an indictment of Square's internal management
I respect giving directors and producers such massive sway and freedom to run projects as they want, but there is a point where someone should've stopped YoshiP and said "hey man the Kingdom Hearts team could handle your gameplay entirely in UE4, you don't need to try and make an action game from the ground up in an MMO-optimised fork of our old horrible bastard engine", especially if this truly did start pre-production and then actual development after Heavensward/during Stormblood as suggested
that thing from the new Square CEO saying they're doing an internal shuffle to get more eyes on projects mid-development is concerning depending on what it means exactly, but hell, to an extent it'd be a godsend, they might stop shipping Balan Wonderworlds and FFXVIs
I just hope they don't stop shipping Harvestellas while they're at it, that game's the dark horse of their recent output

Hello!
I don't stand by my opinion of Balan Wonderworld. I was heated after seeing so many people give it a bad review, because some reviewers said "I hate it, the end". Sometimes they didn't even play the game for very long! Surprising I know...
For the people on PC, I can understand. There's a bug with item collection, and its happened to me. Seems to be recent? Hope it isn't on Console cause that would suck..
I'm broke right now and cannot get the Switch version to play it for myself. Even if I end up not liking the gameplay, I can enjoy the everything else. Which basically means I cannot say a word console-wise until I play the console version myself.
For now, my feet are planted firmly into the "I'm neutral about this game" camp. And I also don't like how I went about saying "Let me like Balan in peace." Put the flamethrower down, me. Use it on the bots, not the reviewers.
I'm sure people are going to comment about it as well... but yes I stand by my opinion that I like Mighty No. 9 despite its flaws. And also for unintentional nostalgia reasons, since the first console I poured my heart out on was the Wii U. Even if the Wii U version is ass-

This would probably miss the point of the games but I always wonder what would happen if Reala took somebody under their wing. At least in my opinion it would be cool to fight on the dark side, finding out more about Wizeman and Nightmare etc. It goes against the theme of the NiGHTS games but that's something I'd really like to see. Tbh I think JoD was kinda childish at times (no offense) and this broke the game's and franchise's neck (at least that's what I guess).
Tumblr media
As cursed as this statement is about to be: the Archie comics actually did a take on that. Was it good? Absolutely not. But it would be pretty interesting. I would like at least a bit more lore about Nightmare because as much as I like concocting headcanons, a little bit more would be nice to work with. A crumb of lore, Sega. Please. Put it in a light novel. I'll buy a light novel.
tbh JoD has grown on me over time, it is absolutely a flawed game in terms of multiple elements (I wouldn't have written my take on it if it hadn't been, also whoever designed the Bomamba fights was not thinking about ease of gameplay AT ALL I hate that fight). I get them going for a child-friendly tone given that nightmares as a thing can be really tough for kids to deal with, but it would be really nice if the story was allowed to have a bit more teeth. But that's just me. I have been very spoiled in terms of narrative games because I sold my soul to the Final Fantasy MMO and the later expansions of that game have not fucked around in terms of story in the slightest. (Not recommended though. I love the game but it is a time sink and a half and the base game is. Really rough. Even with a lot of the recent updates.)
The rushed development cycle absolutely kneecapped JoD and the franchise as a whole, which means Sega has zero incentive to make more games. And Balan Wonderworld doing so poorly sales-wise (the game moved a fraction of the physical copies in its opening week than JoD did, I had to go dig up numbers for that, but JoD's sales were NOTHING on the hundreds of thousands of units sold of NiD in Japan alone) means that we won't be getting anything close to it from Sega OR Square Enix. (Also uh. Because of the insider trading thing. That doesn't help.) It would have been really nice to get at least one or two more NiGHTS games, but what we do have are at least very memorable.
It doesn't help that there was apparently some executive meddling involved in the production. That never helps.
That said Sega please port JoD to steam so I want to play it and I don't want to try and figure out how Wii emulators (notoriously buggy and laggy) work.

A Note On... Balan Wonderworld
Tumblr media
Okay so for my birthday, my friend gifted me a copy of this forsaken game. And as a good friend, played it through from beginning to end despite having the preconceived notion that it was a bad game.
Baland Wonderworld is a platforming game by Square Enix. It wasn't so bad. It just wasn't so good either.
The story is comprehensible. But with the non-language language they use and a single backstory cutscene followed by a boss battle followed by the epilogue, I don't really have a reason to care about anyone at all.
Speaking of cutscenes, they were actually really well made. Like, actually. The direction of those scenes actually lifted whatever the story was telling and showed off the graphics that the rest of the game doesn't.
Two things stand out to me about the visuals in this game. The visual design probably needed some work—I wasn't a big fan of the overall look of things. Then, 80% of the time, you're in some sort of cloudy void where you platform around doing puzzles and fighting the "Negati".
The gameplay is actually alright! Though a bit finnicky at times and it looks awful compared to the cutscenes. The number of reused powers is also an issue, but not terribly so. I did also find out in world 5 that you could choose your power ups regardless of world and that would've been nice to know in a tutorial or something. Also the disappearing NPCs were terrifying at the beginning, but served as cool hints when I figured that they served as hints.
At the end of the day, Balan Wonderworld is a 10-hour fever dream I don't really want to have again.
As always,
Enjoy gaming!

Epilogue Special 2022 - Balan Wonderworld: Was it really to be the next  Night?!
It's a New Year, so that mean it's the Epilogue Special of 2022, Pick-Up x Thoughts x Impression, a cross-over channel.
This time for 2022, I give my thoughts and impression of a game that was suppose to be an anticipated from Yuji Naka, the maker of Sonic and Nights.  Sadly, Balan Wonderworld failed to be a spiritual successor to Nights and fans of Nights including RGT 85 was disappointed.
Balan Wonderworld (PS4/5) - 4/10
+ Nice Graphics, including Model Characters and its Motion
 + Lore-wise can be relatable
 + Music
 - Gameplay
 - One Button Action, simple, yet confusing
 - Balan Statues and Balan's Bout
 - Dance Routine can confuse players (lol) - $60 MSRP, and controversies

The types and number of enemies changes to make the game easier or more challenging as required. 2 Getting Started accessibility featuresĪlthough there is no difficulty setting the game automatically adjusts to your skill level.Human characters have three lives and once they are exhausted, the character falls to the ground and respawns nearby. When a character is defeated, they quickly disappear. There are battles that involve non-realistic violence towards both human and fantasy characters. Rated PEGI 7 because it feature depictions of non-realistic violence of a minor nature towards human-like or animal-like characters, depictions of non-realistic violence towards fantasy characters, and pictures or sounds likely to be scary or frightening to young children. Some weapons allow players to aim and shoot at enemies from a first-person perspective robotic/mech suit costumes allow players to shoot small lasers from their chests. From a third-person perspective, players traverse platform environments, solve puzzles, and use various abilities/weapons (e.g., fireballs, tornadoes, blasters) to defeat fantastical creatures. The simplicity resulted in negative reviews but is a real boon to families and those looking for an unusual and puzzle-focused challenge.ĮSRB 10 Fantasy Violence. The result is a simplistic and saccharine platform game, a lighthearted escape to another world. Then there are the little helper Tim characters who you can collect and breed to help you by attacking enemies, finding items and destroying spikes. You can also revisit completed levels to hunt down any remaining statues (and don't have to complete the levels to save the items you find). From rolling boulders to playing soccer and bowling there is a lot to do in addition to the main game. The platforming action is spiced up with a load of mini games and challenges. On your own or with another played, you steadily work through each of the 12 worlds, resolving hardships in each one with a heartfelt cutscene. For younger players and those looking for a light and breezy game, Balan Wonderworld excels. It's a simple approach, reminiscent of character switching in Skylanders, although some have found it too limiting. Not only that, but the varied abilities encourage experimentation and often result in discovering ways to access parts of levels sooner that the game design expects. The costumes interplay with the puzzles in each of the levels, providing abilities to help you progress. There are 80 different costumes that can be collected, each has a different ability and attack style. Play involves exploring elaborate stages and switching between costumes to access different actions with the single button controls. It's a platform game not generally loved by gaming experts, but a really good fit for younger or new-to-gaming people. This offers unique puzzles while reducing the number of buttons you need to press. Like Mario Odyssey, much of the gameplay revolves around getting temporary abilities (here it is with outfits) to progress. It draws on classic 3D platform games, but with simpler controls and a more laid back challenge. Those who still want to try the game for themselves can grab it on PlayStation 5 or PlayStation 4 right now, either digitally or at retail.Balan Wonderworld is a running, jumping and exploration game.

The game does certainly have other issues though, and we’ll be detailing those in full in our upcoming review due to be published later this week. During my time with the game, I haven’t seen any evidence of this bug although I am yet to reach the final boss.
#Balan wonderworld sales Patch#
The day one patch did fix the bug that could potentially trigger seizures in those with photo sensitive epilepsy, as well as inducing some nausea and headaches in those without a history of epilepsy. While some of these problems were altered in a day one patch, it wasn’t “feasible to reflect every piece of feedback into the game” as some of the problems were to do with the game’s structural mechanics that can’t just be altered easily. The problem is it also showed up some of the problems with the game, including issues with movement controls, camera movement, and the game’s difficulty. The demo allowed access to World 1, World 4, and World 6, showcasing the different costumes and the variety of abilities the game offered. Players got to try out the demo for Balan Company’s platformer title at the end of January.
