#OTD in 1975 – Miami Showband massacre | UVF volunteers (some of whom were also UDR soldiers) shot dead three members of an Irish showband at Buskhill, Co Down.
Three members of the Miami Showband are killed by Ulster Volunteer Force members posing as members of the security forces when returning from a performance at The Castle Ballroom in Banbridge, Co Down. (Four of the killers were actually members of the Ulster Defence Regiment (UDR), an official reserve force for the British army). At the time, the Miami Showband were one of the most popular…

While the attraction is good by all accounts, its creators may have overestimated the number of GoT fans it would draw to a slightly out of the way location in Northern Ireland.
The company behind the Game of Thrones studio tour has undergone a significant financial restructuring after a disappointing initial performance. The attraction at Linen Mill Studios in Banbridge, County Down, opened in February 2022. [ ... ] The accounts, for the year ending 30 September 2022, say the tour opened to "highly positive reviews". However it adds that due to "prevailing economic post-pandemic conditions" it encountered a slow start. [ ... ] Linen Mill was one of the filming locations for Game of Thrones in Northern Ireland. The Great Hall of Winterfell and Castle Black sets have remained in place there since filming ended in 2018. Other sets have been reconstructed and iconic props like the Iron Throne added for the 110,000 sq ft attraction.
Northern Ireland has lots of lovely scenery and historic sites, but it's still somewhat off the beaten path for mass tourism.
What may be helpful is a series of events which would cause locals to make repeat visits rather than maintain Linen Mill Studios as a one-off type of attraction. Adding a medium sized theater for plays and special events would be one way to do that.

Fears child could be killed by dog who mauled cat to death in ‘horrific’ attack
A video seen by the Belfast Telegraph shows the dog approach the “sunbathing” cat on a neighbour’s porch before launching the attack at Whitethorn Brae, Kinallen. Within 24 seconds Scampi was dead and as the homeowner opened the door, the dog ran away with the cat in its mouth. One neighbour explained that a young […]

u should go to london, u would loooove all the franklin expedition stuff they have at the national maritime museum!! also the amount of of random monuments to the franklin expedition scattered across the uk is kind of wild. one day i was walking through a cemetery in edinburgh and randomly came across irving's grave, today i noticed there's a franklin statue near picadilly circus. symbol of britain's wounded imperial pride etc etc
oh dude trust me i have dreams about seeing the victory point note in person. i’m so mad that when i went to ireland i hadn’t entered my franklinmania bc i 100% would have dragged my family to banbridge to see croziers statue 😔 but yes trust i will be going before i die

This might be the most niche post ever but A Funeral in Banbridge by Frida Hyvenön (a swedish singer) is so very very alternative universe kevjean coded, you know in all the other drafts where Jean didn't make it. In the song specific names and places are mentioned and they obviously don't apply but the story, returning to the place and the people your former lover grew up and escaped from to bury them, to see their family and know how much that family hurt your love. Even the part about how it's all wrong because he wanted to be buried in the place he considered his home, the ravens would probably have buried him in the US.
Especially the line:
"I wish you hadn't died
without warning me about it
I wish you would have called
I would have tricked you out of it"
hurts.
You know, like how in one draft Jean killed himself while on the phone with Kevin, so it wouldn't have worked for them, but still.
Yes, I have cried over the similarities.

From a plaque beside a series of letters in the Canadian Museum of History
One of the more fascinating discoveries from the latest dive to the impeccably preserved HMS Terror is a series of notes, written in the hand of Captain Francis Crozier and the then-Junior Ice Master of the HMS Erebus Genevieve Sinclair, who records indicate he would later marry in his hometown of Banbridge Ireland in 1852. The letters, sealed in an air-tight capsule similar to that of the Victory Point note later discovered in 1859 which confirmed their retelling of events upon their return to England in 1851, display a forthright nature between the couple, and indicate the early affection displayed between the two shipmates who would soon become lovers in spite of their horrific and tragic circumstances. Sinclair's writings in particular hold a specific interest to many Franklin Expedition scholars, as few of her records from the expedition exist from her return to England, but these documents indicate not only a sharp mind for the task she was appointed to the expedition for, but as well as a measure of wit that no doubt kept warm the flame of affection between her and her Captain in the constant chill during their 5 year long residence in the polar regions.

It's really surreal that we're looking at places to buy in Ireland and one of the places we're looking to buy is in Banbridge, where my partner's grandpa lives but its also where Francis Crozier is from.
I wonder a year one from now I'll be living close to his house and memorial they have in the town lol

17th Tuesday
Fine: all in great anxiety about the Erebus which was happily relieved at 8 PM. by her heaving in sight. We sent all our boats and towed her in. She Anchored at 30 m-11 PM. She had been blown off the Land and becalmed all well on board. It was a very dull St Patricks Day.
Campbell's Notes: Saint Patrick’s day is the only Saint's day mentioned in the journal. Captain Crozier’s family had been in Ireland since the seventeenth century, he himself having been brought up in Banbridge, County Down, which no doubt is the reason why Saint Patrick's day was celebrated on board.
