Charles II and Marie Louise of Orleans Fanart
"She is the most beautiful of all" Charles II of Spain
The art depicts Charles II introducing his wife to his court and touring her around the Alcazar Real Palace.
I cried the first time I read their love story because it was sad and tragic. It was an affectionate and genuine relationship. Charles II loved his first wife and did everything he could to make her happy. Although Marie Louise did not feel the same way for Charles at first, she eventually fell for him. Despite the people and the Spanish court hating Marie Louise for not producing children, they had a loving relationship. She was exposed to rituals and medicines to cure her "infertility," but she began to weaken over time. One day, while horseback riding, she felt immense pain in her belly and fell ill. Sensing that death was near, confessors were summoned to save her soul. Charles was by her side, holding her hand. She leaned towards him and said, "Many women may be with His Majesty, but none will love him more than I do," before passing away.

The Spanish Series: Las Meninas - Diego Velázquez (1656)
Tumblr media
Famed Spanish artist Antonio Palomino describes Las Meninas as thus in his El Museo Pictorico, Y Escala Optica:
"In all the marvelous paintings that Velazquez made, there was a large one with the portrait of the Infanta de España… when she was a very young age; there are no words to describe her grace, liveliness, and beauty; but her own portrait can be better praised."
Of course, the "Infanta" that Palomino refers to is the blonde-haired child at the very foreground of the painting, attended to by Maria Agustina (left) and Isabel Velasco (right). In this depiction of La Infanta, her hair is a bright, almost platinum blonde; as she aged, her hair in paintings darkened, either a consequence of natural biological processes or a representation of her maturation over the years.
When Infanta Margaret Theresa was 15, she married Holy Roman Emperor Leopold I. She underwent 6 pregnancies in 6 years, weakening her immune system and eventually leading to her death in 1673 at the age of 21.
Velázquez painted numerous other portraits of Margaret Theresa and inspired many others to do the same.
