- “This page was formed three summers ago, in Ohio. There weren’t many of you then, there are more than 3,500 of you now. Some came because you were bored and thought this seemed fun. Some came because you like history. Many came because of the stories told.” Today I’d like to thank you on this three year anniversary of this page! I never thought this many people would follow us and be supportive of the stories shared here. This page has been one of THE best decisions of my life. I’ve met so many great people, made some really great friends I wouldn’t have met otherwise. It’s also brought about great opportunities and partnerships that I couldn’t be more grateful for! Really, thank you, to everyone of you!!!🙏🏼 - What better way to celebrate than to spend the weekend at @gettysburgnps and doing an absolutely fantastic @addressinggettysburg tour of Farnworth’s charge and the Slyder Farm! - - #civilwar #addressinggettysburg #getoutofthecar2021 #americancivilwar #battlefieldguide #civilwartour #anniversary #threeyears #thankyou (at Gettysburg National Military Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/CRcAK9Ch3Qj/?utm_medium=tumblr

Not all touring and travel is lighthearted, but some travel is as necessary and meaningful to a healthy soul. Visting a concentration camp at least once in your life is just as important to understanding the world as visiting the Louvre or a beach in Hawaii. A few years ago I made a sort of pilgrimage to see the places some veteran friends had told me of in their recollections of fighting across Europe. It has been some of the most profound traveling I have done. This is a photo of the place just outside of Bastogne where one of the more haunting scenes in the Band of Brothers series actually took place. This is the general area where Pvt. John Julian was killed. Julian was wounded by enemy fire, but his fellow troopers could not reach him and had to withdraw, leaving him behind. Julian died of his wounds. I don’t know how soldiers manage to keep it all together for the rest of their lives when things like this were repeated on battlefields across Europe and the world in the dark but ultimately victorious days of WWII. (Or in any conflict or service to country) Be thankful for such men and their sacrifices. It’s a big reason why we live with the degree of peace and prosperity we do. I am very grateful to Reg Jans showing me this location. He’s a great battlefield tour guide and a good friend. #bastogne #wwii #bandofbrothers #airborne #wwiiairborne #batteredbastardsofbastogne #101stairborne #paratrooper #battleofthebulge #easycompanymen #eto #foy #history #worldhistory #battlefieldguide #goodguides #soldiers #bravemen #ptsd #gratefulnation #neverforget #travelforthesoul #liberators #highpriceoffreedom (at Bastogne) https://www.instagram.com/p/B6LaTnqFwvM/?igshid=haafe1u3tk2u

TBT to one of our visits to the Waterloo battlefield on what appears to have been a rather grey day in Belgium. 🦁 The Butte du Lion is a man-made mound topped with a cast iron sculpture. It was erected in 1823 and stands at 40.5m with a circumference of 520m. To create the mound, 300,000 square metres of soil were removed from the battlefield. The lion, designed by Van Geel, is 4.45m high and weighs 28 tonnes. • Have you ever visited this battlefield? • #ThrowbackThursday #TBT #Waterloo #OTDIH #History #MilitaryHistory #OTD #Battlefield #Thursday #OnThisDay #BattlefieldTour #BattlefieldGuide #LionsMound #ButteDuLion #Belgium (at Waterloo, Belgium) https://www.instagram.com/p/CBlSDTWJ0kD/?igshid=1crkc2l7h275o

‘On fames eternal camping ground, their silent tents are spread’ 🇦🇺 Amongst the recipients of the Victoria Cross who are buried or commemorated at Tyne Cot are Australians Sergeant Lewis McGee (40th - Tasmanian - Bn AIF) - who was killed taking a pillbox at Hamburg Farm - and Captain Clarence Jeffries (34th Bn AIF). We found details of the actions during which these brave men lost their lives and for which they were awarded their respective VCs in Major and Mrs Holt Battlefield Guide to the Ypres Salient & Passchendaele, and visited the sites of their headstones to pay our respects during a trip to the area in 2017. 🌹📚 • #Passchedaele #Ypres #WW1 #InMemory #VictoriaCross #VC #TyneCot #AIF #Belgium #AustralianInfantry #AIF #LestWeForget #CWGC #WarCemetery #Australian #ANZACDay #BattlefieldGuide #Guidebook #Travel #HoltsGuide #PenAndSword #PenAndSwordBooks (at Tyne Cot) https://www.instagram.com/p/B_aCl9wHnC_/?igshid=7a5xj5cmrkou
