It largely depends on the topics and cast you’re interested in seeing. The show is split into three subseries as well as the occasional standalone episode: Animator vs. Animation (the original created in 2006-7 by Alan Becker alone), Animation vs. Minecraft (the longest and most popular, shorts stemming off a standalone from 2015), and Animation vs. Education (the newest from 2023, visualizing high-level STEM concepts)

Personally, I think core AvA is required reading for anyone who has appreciation for past eras of the internet, UI, or principles and genres of animation. AvM and AvE are equal in quality but honestly you won’t appreciate them as much if you aren’t familiar with the topics they cover. Alan and his team do try to visually introduce things step by step, though, so you can at least get a general idea of what you’re looking at

Besides that, core AvA specifically follows the Hollow-Heads, hand-drawn stick figures created by the Animator, “noogai”/Alan. In particular you have The Chosen One (shortened to Chosen, Cho or TCO) and The Second Coming (aka Second, Sec, TSC or Orange). TSC is the de facto main character and the only one appearing in all three series, while TCO and the Animator are exclusive to the original.

The SticksFight squad - the four sticks originating from sticksfight.com and named after their colors - have developed distinct personalities as the main cast of AvM, but only take a collective side role in main AvA (Yellow has a slightly larger role than the others). Here’s a summary of their individual personalities so you know what to look for in their smaller appearances

Red - Impulsive and energetic, always the first to jump into action and with a soft heart for creatures and beasties. He’s a little simple when it comes to technical things, but excels with reading the people around him, then building off of their quirks. Since the rest of the group babies him a bit, he puts in extra physical work to prove he can hold his own. Red also tends to play around with new or out-of-the-box solutions - knowledge that extends to his pranks. Most ready to fight with his fists or use heavy-hitters like maces and clubs. (Good intro/focus eps: The Rediscovery, Texture Pack, Monster School, The Prank)

Blue - A mellow fellow! Blue is one with nature and focuses on farming, cooking, and potionology. Due to her pacifistic tendencies, Blue prefers to reason things out or find other solutions rather than fighting, but will throw herself into the face of danger for others. Otherwise she takes up ranged weapons like guns and bows. She’s detail- and aesthetic-oriented as well as graceful, but doesn’t often step outside what she knows. A bit of an addiction to nether wart, which is somewhere between an unusual snack and a drug. (Good intro/focus eps: Potions, The Piglin War, The Chef, Blue’s New Superpower)

Yellow - She loves more than anything to get down to the root of things, and that makes her the group’s engineer! …And a bit of a troublemaker, paying more attention to the thrill of a discovery than the consequences. Yellow tries to find fairness and justice for friend and foe alike. While they have a reliable, supportive demeanor, they’re also very peppy, excitable and tough with how they stand strong in dire situations. Often her fighting style takes place behind the scenes, using things like explosives or a command-casting staff. (Good intro/focus eps: The Roller Coaster, Command Blocks, Lucky Blocks, AvArcade Games)

Green - Originally the weakest on the team, but has since come into his own after a lot of reflex training (read: getting tossed around). Green has great adaptability to learning new techniques and getting creative, particularly with styles of music and architecture. He loves the spotlight and usually competes with the others or takes the chance to show off; however, he also cares deeply about welcoming in those he meets. Dashes and zips around all the time during battle, usually via fishing rod-grappling hook. (Good intro/focus eps: AvYouTube, Note Blocks, PvP, The Dolphin Kingdom)

@ghostishere0 - the original reason I started this doodle, as I wanted to draw a "shepherd lovers squad" and their OC (who I don't know the name of F) was the perfect fit for it.

@luminesparkz - the best interpretation of Pom pikmin. If I were Mr. Nitendo, I would make them the official comic creator along with the manga comics.

@marblyso - If I was a little more unhinged and made a shrine to Erma Shepherd, it would be mostly marblyso's art of her, it's my absolute favorite Erma depiction <3

@rexscanonwife - another OC that I don't know the name of, but she makes such a cute pair with Shepherd and has such cute art that why not, let Shepherd have multiple canon wives at this point.

@citruscrisp - I think this is secretly Alph in an alternate universe where he makes comics about himself, because citrus has Alph's character SPOT ON, and also loves to put that boy in a situation (which I am happy for, I enjoy seeing that boy in a situation)

@daisythecomic - oooaaaaaaaaaa they look like little mice people they look so soft and sweet I love them so muuuuuuuuuccchhhhhhhhh

@kiwilittle - the soft, the sweet, the one who makes the best family style art, really making me wish I was an inch tall so I could go to holidays with the olimar family, also their wife design is so cute that if Olimar didn't already get it I would shoot my shot for her m a a m

@pikbugz - really nails the soft aesthetic that makes pikmin such a calming series, and their coloring style is so soft and good that it gives me the ratatouille nostalgia flashback moment.

@splitster - more than just the wraith au guy, they are the one who makes incredible and funny comics; I've seen so many fics with the rescue corps where I can pick up that yes, this trait came from a splitster comic, and that's a GOOD thing. Made me actually LIKE Dingo, the nerve.

@diesaur - I can't do diesaur's incredible, unique art justice, they are amazing at using geometrics and have the best charlie (his little teefs...)

@solluxander - Cars, one of my favorite pikmin Ocs I've ever seen! Collin deserves a slightly unhinged sentient fluffball boyfriend, and I always love seeing the new ways Cars will interact with him.

@sillypikmin - all hail the best pikposter, who I'm still convinced is an actual leafling living on actual pnf-404, literally every time I have a bad day I look at drawings of Moss and feel better.

@eggpathy - thank goodness they came back to give us old man yaoi. I keep their drawing of olimar kissing the pikmin good night on my phone and look at it before I go to sleep and so far I have yet to have a single nightmare.

@the-knife-consumer - the only person I trust with Louittany, toxic yuri my beloved, I just adore their beasty brittany design so so much, I wish I could have a small brittany to live in my house...

@natibranch - there's a voice line of Louie going "wa-ha!" in this really cute sing-song voice and every time I see any art by natibranch I hear that sound in my head as a little burst of serotonin, they just nail that exact feeling so so well.

@pikked-min - Another of my favorite Pikmin OCs, Yuva! A really interesting and unique character concept with a lot of thought put into the worldbuilding, followed by a strong unusual personality that had me looking at the pikmin world through a new perspective entirely. Please, someone, give them some sunglasses. Read the fic it's so good

@ssserf - artistic and deep while still somehow looking like official nintendo tm art, genuinely the best at the pikmin proportions, how could I resist trying my hand at the classic amazing beautiful Brittany Fruit Sweater moment, literally SO iconic

@kashi-pon - while I was working on the part of this that was just kashi's various highlife dresses there was a part of me that wanted to dedicate the rest of the space to paying homage to the joke comic of Louie lifting his skirt to show Olimar that he's wearing shorts, except this dress....well......

Tattoos/scars: I headcanon the single choice of tattoos per face for roes are meaningful somehow - I chose coming of age, getting her Adventurer Name, and leaving home, so those were fresh porple swoops over her cheekbones in ARR :D I've only known her as long as she's been Frog and looked like this.

The scar on her nose is from being underhand punted like a rugby ball by an older brother back when she was an orb shaped child. Since adventuring the regular healing has stopped her getting too scarred up from any misadventures.

F A M I L Y

Parents: Notable members of their remote mountain community, maintaining an important set of Arcanima wards around an aetherically dangerous geological fault. Of course, they're good at their jobs so this wasn't very scary as an upbringing. They're a lovely couple and make a hell of a bowl of soup. All else I know about them is they're very supportive and Frog writes to them regularly.

Siblings: like six rowdy older brothers. She was very spoiled by this squad of bodyguards tbh. (Ignore the previous comment about one of them maiming her, they DO love her even if they saw her as a cannonball under other circumstances.) A couple of them left to be mercenaries, uncertain if for Garlemald - they don't write home as thoroughly.

Grandparents: Probably, tbh. We're getting out of my limited perception of Hellguard culture and history but I think I can say the remoteness of their village is an excuse for nothing too terrible to have happened to any of them :P

In-laws and other: She was sort of starting to think of Edmont as a potential in-law and he began acting like it after Events so she's acquired some without marrying. He DID also adopt Aymeric informally, so now she's courting him it's coming back around!

Pets: Multiple, even not counting animal sanctuary beasties. Some she drops by to visit where they're being looked after once she'd raised them or sheltered them for a while (the baby hippo was donated to the hippo riders thankfully before he got too large and hungry for example). Others live at the free company house getting spoiled by the staff. The free company is named after the baby tapir who is the best and cutest. :)

S K I L L S

Abilities: In character, she has yet to find something she isn't good at after a couple of false starts. (ooc is much more of a mess depending on my ability) As an all-jobs all-crafts all-gatherers weirdo she's genuinely alarming to contemplate.

Hobbies: crafting/gathering/fishing is more of a wind down respite than a career calling for her. Canonically she's finished the fishing log... ooc I haven't by a long shot :P She also loves visiting bars and pubs across the world that she's visited to drop in on old friends, or go on foodie tours of places she's liberated. They stole G'raha being a foodie traveller in the dawntrail trailer from her actually.

Kinda always wanted to do a in character review of all the drinking establishments in game.

T R A I T S

Most positive trait: determination and everything that went into being strong enough to do the end walk, which did feel like a culmination of all the positive things they ascribe to the WoL. Since she's living the life of box art Meteor with no plot deviations or alterations except what I can put into the downtime and spaces between cutscenes, I can't argue with times when they REALLY show the admirable heart of the WoL.

Most negative trait: She's not going to say no, so if you need a favour just stand near where she wanders by routinely and look forlorn and you WILL get helped to within an inch of your life.

Fortunately we've only fought with stray animals that got annoying.

Only had to have 2 dwarfs visit the hospital after this. We did lose a good shirt, however.

Elk birds keep charging into my fort and fighting with my dogs.

I'm kind of mad that no one in my fort seems to like dogs, and the only one that's a pet is one I assigned as a hunting animal.

However I did find out about and figure out how to enable Dwarfvet which lets animals get treatment at the hospital.

Got a few of the elk birds trapped and tamed. Also sent the military squads after a few that got annoying, and a giant olm that bit Rock Mover.

Found some kind of cave horses

they're called draltha, and they are really big but skittish. They all have ecru skin and yellow hair so far. (I haven't learned much about the DF specific creatures, or spent much time in the caverns, so some of these are surpises)

Also got some of them tamed, they had a baby

Beneath the caverns, I finally found some mostly dry stone!

Then Immediately found a spider hole.

and almost, almost got it sealed up before some non-spiders showed up.

That's a swarm of rutherers. Big blue and grey beasties, seems like they move around in family groups.

The flooding on the level just above is sort of the worst, and responsible for our only dwarven casualty so far.

should I have sent dwarfs down to smooth a drainage hole? It turns out no. But I still don't know why he didn't just walk off the upward slope tile.

we’re watching the nge rebuild!! first episode thoughts:

- oh they have a BUDGET budget now. The angels look fucking incredible

- I appreciate how much faster the base elements of the plot are being established. It did make the sheer speed with which Shinji got stuffed in the EVA extra comical, though.

- I’m excited for the promise that the lore will be filled out more fully! NGE has always seemed like a story with a tome of world building that got cut for time

- Lalonde pointed out that the moon already had the blood streak on it from the End of Evangelion, so I’m guessing there’s some reincarnation, trapped in samsara shit going on

- Shinji my poor lad. In the original he seemed like Most Depressed Boy On Earth. Now he’s more expressive, so he seems less depressed but more actively upset. Uncertain that this is better

- I’m struck by how little privacy Shinji has. His classmates see him break down inside the EVA, a squad of bodyguards follows him on his wanderings, he lives with his superior officer. Fuck, dude

- the writers figured out that we’re all obsessed with Misato and decided to address that by giving us more boob and ass shots. I don’t love it

- I LOVVVVVE the flesh and muscle that Shinji’s EVA grows sometimes. Love that that’s being revealed so much quicker this time. I also love all the noises that the EVA makes. Really frames her as a beastie instead of a tool.

Jimmy gets elastics in every color of the rainbow whenever his braces get adjusted. He coordinates depending on the time of year (red and green around Christmas, red, white, and blue for patriotic holidays, rainbow in June, because "I'm an ally, f-fellas.")

On the other hand, the other three braces wearers opt for clear elastics. Kevin and Scott just don't care and Shelly thinks that colored elastics are futile since in her eyes, it won't help her appearance in any way.

Stan has Does the Dog Die? bookmarked. He's been spoiled many times, but he'd rather be spoiled than have a repeat of what his family and friends call "the Old Yeller incident".

Relapse Records is proud to announce the reissue of the highly influential TECHNO ANIMAL album, The Brotherhood of the Bomb. The album, fully remastered by Broadrick, is available on LP for the first time ever! Prior to The Brotherhood of the Bomb having even been conceived, TECHNO ANIMAL had already been championed/released by The Beastie Boys, collaborated with Alec Empire and the then-fledgeling Dälek, but still remained in almost total obscurity. TECHNO ANIMAL had barely found an audience, yet on The Brotherhood of the Bomb, the duo had definitely found their sound. "The Brotherhood of the Bomb had a lot to do with myself and Justin's obsession with Dillinja's bass sound, and the love of playing No-U-Turn drum & bass records at the wrong, slower speed." Kevin Martin comments. "It was also nourished by our addiction to the new breed of independent rap that had emerged, as we were paid up junkies for the likes of Company Flow, Anti Pop and Cannibal Ox's consecutive classics. Hence why we had approached them all to guest on our album, and flatteringly. all of whom thankfully agreed to appear." The album was made by punishing studio speakers with overdriven synths through analogue hardware, and dub mixing the lot through Justin's desk, which the two fought over who could get to the parametrics fastest, to do the bassline filter sweeps. "We were both just loving tweaking the fck out of the tunes and going mad on the aux sends/returns" Martin comments. "It was fueled on the atonality of mutating electro acoustic found sounds, and fcking with the stereo field as much as possible, whenever possible." Inspired by Public Enemy's Bomb Squad to bring the noise, Jah Shaka/Aba-Shanti, to brutalise rigs, and filtered those indelible influences through their musical past notoriety. Whether they were known for pioneering industrial metal with Godflesh, or peddling grinding noise rock with GOD, the different aspects of TECHNO ANIMAL are palpable throughout The Brotherhood of the Bomb. The seeds for this album had been sown by making the transition from playing back rooms of pubs, and other dubious squalor venues into playing in sub heavy clubs with their monolithic, low end friendly sound systems. Considered too noisy for hip hop heads and too hip hop for noise heads/metal fiends at that time, TECHNO ANIMAL were truly ahead of their time. Once dubbed "the future of Rock 'n' Roll!" by Alan Mcgee from Creation Records, TECHNO ANIMAL helped pave the way for contemporary, explosive, cutting edge groups like Death Grips, Backxwash, and Clipping, all of whom were inspired by the U.K. duo's furious take on beats, bass and sonic weaponry, and all whom have cited The Brotherhood of the Bomb as an influence and a personal favorite.

Well, it's once again pretty late for me and I have no idea what is my life, so why don't I discuss Wheeljack again?

I mean, he's kinda overpowered and *slaps him* he can fit so much trauma!

Why do I feel he's overpowered? This honey can take an energon mine solo (- Miko) and if he wasn't this reckless he could've supplied team prime like it's nothing. He also escapes decepticons TWICE! ALONE!! If Wheeljack had some patience with the whole boss thing, he would've been one of the best allies.

And what do I mean abt trauma? Well, imagine u have a gang/close friends/family you love very much. U fight in a war for primus knows how long and u slowly lose some of ur friends. Then ur bestie says he transferred to another squad and they're gonna abandon the planet soon. Then u had tolerate ur new boss, tho u hate being controlled. Then u leave alone and spend centuries (or less idk) seeking ur long lost comrades only to either find them already dead or see them die in front of u. And when you finally find ur beastie, he repeatedly chooses his new family for u, and when u finally decide to stay with him and this new team, HE NEARLY DIES;!! TWICE!!! And this is just what I can remember. Guys, I know he's mostly seen like a funny badass bomb uncle, but he's fate is truly tragic. I love it.

So, I'm going to list them off real quick. It's a gaggle of mooks that give a real Saturday Morning Villains Group vibe when you think of them all together.

The big boss man can't be the only sorcerer, he's too busy to handle taking to the hero face to face, week to week, so Agahnim is a fine substitute. He's usually running on borrowed power, being just an extension of Ganon himself.

Next people hanging around Ganon's evil squad are his surrogate mothers Koume and Kotake. They specialize in Fire and Ice Magic, but also feature Mind Control abilities. It was likely they who got most of the Gerudo to join Ganon's side. Their specialty is more RITUALISTIC magic.

Onox and Veran are two other underlings for the Demon King. Onox is notable for his impressive armor and defense, and the ability to transform into a dragon. While sexy sorceress Veran is known for impersonating people, and can transform into a monstrous insect queen.

Then there's Ganon's pet beasty, The Helmaroc King. It is the largest of Ganon's underlings (Not counting Dragon Onox) and is very intelligent for a bird - known to kidnap important people.

Zant, the Usurper, was just a puppet. Being cast out of the Twilight Realm really warped his mind, making him unstable and prone to fits of violence. Speaking of violence, while Onox is famed for his defense, King Bulblin loves BATTLE, and rides into battle on his armored boar (Bulbo).

Finally, there's the berserk robot pirate Servo. Can't have a gaggle of villains without a pirate. He's technically not on Ganon's side, but he'd be the only member of the squad with a sword. (Other than Ganon.)

It is not very single demon or villain from the Legend of Zelda. (I don't want to be here all day.) Many people will tell me that it's already been done in Hyrule Warriors. I just wanted a good mix of Magic users and Warriors.

I wish there were a Lynel that had a name. I like a few of the bosses from Zelda 2.

God one of these days I'm gonna finish writing anything for the sandbox I've been setting up! But I haven't so let's talk monsters

Price I'd love to see as a manticore or some kinda chimera. Something big, intimidating, incredibly poisonous. Keeps everything about it close to his chest, prefers to keep it a bit of a last resort because it generally means either stealth is out the window or they're not taking prisoners. Absolutely would snuggle with a partner in the monstrous form but that is a murder machine of a man. Hell of a purr he's got, though, feel that in your bones no matter which form he's in. Would ramble more but I need to pin down what he is before I can.

Simon is in that fun Limbo of you can play around and try to put labels on him any day of the week. None fit right. He's got so many facets and none of the labels are a 1:1. Makes it a lot easier on his end to make risky moves as nobody can figure out what the hell will actually kill him for realsies. He is smoke he is shadow he can and will just take a 15 minute break when he knows he can get away with it to go shadow walk his broody ass to wherever you are. Just to gently harass and check in on you if he knows your free time windows are lining up. Tries to keep the visits light, just some touchstones to make sure to everything in his being that you're still safe, you're still alright. He'll also fuck off to get you Somewhere Safe Right Now Immediately if he has a Bad Feeling at the drop of a hat. Price knows he can't stop Simon from doing this if he tried, but if it's for a Bad Feeling Price is usually getting the lads together asap when Ghost pops back in not three minutes later. He always explains when he's back in one piece why he yoinked you from the Grocery Store to an Undisclosed Location for an Indeterminate Period of Time but you're safe and that's the goal.

Gaz on paper is a seer. In actuality he's a few things playing well together that it's easier and nicer to put seer on paperwork 'cause he sees and can do a hell of a lot more than whatever paperwork implies. Like yes, he can do limited spellwork but what he sees? Fae, ghosts, connections between people, brief glimpses into the history of whatever he's focusing on in a pinch, probably the lotto if he tried really hard (again that is. He hasn't tried since he was a lot younger- it didn't go well to say the least). He likes looking at the connections he's formed with you when he has some down time, cords that always point him in the direction of you. He will use these to make sure the relationship is in healthier spots, he knows if things start unraveling. It can and will get irksome because he very much wants to help fix what's wrong even if you're not ready to talk about it yet, but he will respect boundaries once set. Doesn't mean he won't keep prodding the line now and again to try to get you to talk about it but he's usually pretty good about not being overt about it unless it's Dire.

Soap I have. Mixed feeling on. Mostly because he can be so interesting and can easily fit into many different slices of beastie! Vamp, werewolf, selkie... but for the sake of keeping it interesting and one i havent seen played with as much, for arguments sake let's say he's a very interesting kelpie. Like obviously man has so thoroughly detached himself from a specific body of water, but I feel like their main base statistically would have some kinda pond he usually is happy to just call dibs on. He sometimes shares but largely people just use a pool instead. Man definitely leans into the carnivore and likes his food a bit more on the raw side if possible. No he does not spook but he does have one hell of a kick. He will bite if he needs to and you really don't want him to need to. Views his horse form as just another tool but largely avoids it for work reasons- namely lack of thumbs or body armor. He will get twitchy around bridles, but otherwise so long as you're his squad or his partner he's fine with giving people a lift in a pinch! Promises he won't drag you into the water to drown you! He will drag you into the water though. That is very much a thing that will happen. He likes it when you spend time with him like this. He likes getting you nice and wet and especially when you ride him :))
