💎Sea Serpent Lore💎
Sea Serpents are known to be legends among merfolk from all across the oceans, lakes and rivers.
The Sea Witch was belived to have lived in the fossilized body of a dead leviathan that had been hollowed out.
Other than a slight connection with the lore of the sea witch, many merfolk have heard tales long ago that the serpents ruled the seas with fericious power.
Their roars summon whirlpools and hurricanes that decimate ships. Even the waves bow to their sheer might, tsunamis were to be expected by towns who live near the shore long ago.
The phenomenon of the Bermuda Triangle was used among the sailors to avoid a certain part of the ocean. It just so happened to be the area where sea serpents lived in.
Nowadays it is still avoided, though no sea serpents were spotted on the surface waters, storms are still prevalent in that area that it becomes dangerous to traverse through.
💎Serpent Kingdom💎
The Serpent Sea is home to the serpent merfolk, it is located in the deepest depths where the sun does not reach. It is very dangerous for those who aren't used to deep waters.
Not to mention the water pressure can be dangerous for non-deep water merfolk.
Though Cerule visits Azul, she always has bodyguards or her father was around as they leave the depths.
She is never allowed to explore the depths on her own!
Without bioluminescence, you can’t find your way in the dark. Even if you do acquire a light source, you would be a beacon for any rogue sea creatures itching for a meal.
Hence why some merfolk regard serpents as fearsome and even dangerous because they can live there in the depths.
But the stereotypes about serpents aren’t entirely true. The serpents are much more intelligent and have an entire community that is much like any other merfolk community.
Albeit you have to get past the danger and darkness to know.
The kingdom of the serpents can be accessed through a large hole in an oceanic trench. You would have to navigate past maze-like tunnels that are confusing and would lead to dead ends if you are not careful.
There are even deep sea creatures who will ambush those unsuspecting prey that passes by their tunnel. Serpents know to flash warning lights to scare them off and if they persist then they will simply fend them off.
Such is the way of the darkest depths.
Upon reaching the entrance to the kingdom, it will be guarded by an enormous lobster. The shell is dark as the cave walls making it blend in perfectly for an ambush. And not to mention the shell is strong as volcanic rock, so any firepower made by man or even magic couldn’t do much damage.
This is the guardian of the entrance, and only serpents were permitted to enter and exit.
So, even if you were to try and get past the darkness and find the entrance, without a serpent escorting you, this creature would end you within moments.
The residents of the kingdom lovingly call him, “Levi”.
The actual kingdom is very unusual, there is a large air pocket that is held by a spire-like structure naturally formed in the center. It has been hollowed out to be used as a stairway and fortified with minerals to keep it sturdy.
The spire is NOT the throne however. It’s located below the spire, in a very deep yet large cavern illuminated by bioluminescent jellyfish, algae and even crystals. The throne room is not the typical fancy chair often seen with royals.
It is the room where the royals reside, there they lay at the bottom coiled around the flat surface of their dwelling. There is a dome made from a gigantic conch shell that is used to keep the eggs or hatchlings safe.
The structure of the throne room is less of aesthetic and more of functionality, it keeps the babies safe from any intruder who managed to get past the guardian.
This is technically Cerule’s room and it has soft coral sponges for her bedding and a lot of trinkets she collects are stored there.
💎Two Kinds of Serpents💎
Serpents from the kingdom are more civil though a bit hesitant to socialize with those outside their home. The serpent royalty has only recently been making an effort to attend royal meetings to better their relations with other kingdoms.
Though there are also serpents who live outside the kingdom and they are known as "Rogue serpents".
They often clash with the kingdom serpents that leave either side with scars.
Rogues don't follow any rules and even their speech has become growls and roars. They don't follow the rules of the royals and sometimes would venture out of the depths to cause trouble.
But this only happens when food is scarce.
Also, sea serpents can either be carnivore or herbivore. One can tell by the type of sea creature their serpent form takes after. Anything that has sharp teeth or venomous properties are carnivores.
Those that don't are herbivores, though they are still as fierce as the carnivores they just don't like to fight that often.
Sometimes there can be a mix of the two appearance-wise but as for the diet, it can be either one.
💎Early Stages of Serpents💎
Sea serpents are hatched from eggs which are often plenty in number. The eggs are hatched in giant shells to keep them safe, all serpents would start to venture out of the kingdom to search for shells.
It is their instinct, the male risks his life in the depths to find them for his mate along with any food because the female has to stay and give birth to the eggs.
When they hatch the babies' tails are similar to that of an oarfish, only by reaching their puberty stage can they start to develop other features that mix with the oarfish ones.
Puberty also refers to gaining the ability to turn into their serpent form.
Cerule in this case still hasn't reached her serpent puberty yet as she still looks like an oarfish. But she does hope to have betta fish fins like her mother.
💎Royal Pearl Rites💎
Serpents who have reached puberty must undergo the passage of rite to venture out into the depths and obtain a pearl.
All serpents undergo this trial to prove their might and test their independence.
It is a long and very dangerous journey as they must swim outside their kingdom through the abyss and face other deep see terrors to reach the source of the pearl.
The serpents refer to it as the All Mother of Pearls. It is an enormous clam that has been living for centuries and produces magical pearls that serpent children need to retrieve in order to pass the rite.
The pearls are actually large and quite heavy which makes it difficult to swim back with. Not to mention it was also glowing which attracts unwanted attention.
Once they return with the pearl, they wear it on their forehead as a symbol of their strength and that they are free to leave their safe caverns without the aid of any parent.
Also, the pearls are naturally large but after it is attached to the serpent, it can shrink when they de-transform into a smaller size mermaid.
The pearls are also used to help the young seprents control their power when in serpent form, as they tend to lose a bit of control when transformed.

Yes, We Have No Bananas….
Monday 30th May 2022
Today we got the bus in the other direction for a change and made the short journey into the Royal Town of St George, otherwise known as St George’s.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
St George’s was the first town on the island founded in 1612 and was the original capital of Bermuda until the island population had grown to the point where the newer and more central city of Hamilton became the capital in 1815.
Sadly, as cruise ships have grown larger over the years, and with the advent of covid-19, St George’s has seen tourist numbers fall dramatically and only a handful even bother to get the fast ferry from Dockyard to come here - as was the case today. We had a gentle stroll through the town, doing a bit of light shopping and then stopping for a drink at the famous White Horse Pub on King’s Square.
Tumblr media
Mind you, it may seem odd but everywhere we’ve been over the last few days, there have been no bananas and no banana-flavoured things. It was bad enough they ran out of Pina Colada mix in the hotel bar but there were no banana daquiris or banana ice-creams either; also, there were no banana-split sundaes in the park on Friday; no bananas in the fruit selection at breakfast - need I go on? Bermuda must be the only tropical island with no bananas! However, wonder of wonders, the White Horse had some banana daquiri mix today, so maybe I broke the spell and as a result, Andrew and I ended up co-ordinating our drinks with our outfits - his was an Apple Martini of course!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We returned to Grotto Bay in time for lunch and in the afternoon, we ventured across the road to Blue Hole Park and the Walsingham Nature Reserve.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Reserve is a habitat for birds and native mangroves, as well as being directly above the island’s famous Crystal and Leamington Caves, a series of underground limestone caves. The Blue Hole for which the park is named is a collapsed example in which people who find it often swim.
Tumblr media
It was a very hot day today (by English standards at least) and Andrew led our group (or my case, dragged!) up the hill to the Ice Cream Parlour - where, surprise, surprise, they didn’t have any banana ice-cream! Still, they did have about 15 other flavours to choose from and the Mint Choc Chip was just what the doctor ordered.

Pics:
1. Lena Heady is a British actress best known for: "Games of Thrones", "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles", "The Jungle Book", "The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance ", "Masters of the Universe: Revelation", "The Brothers Grimm" & Zach Snyder's "300"!!
She was born in Bermuda, but, now lives in, both, London & LA.
Weird Bit: For "Games of Thrones," she learned how to ride horses, shoot arrows & how to skin rabbits!
At home, she likes to practice yoga & how to box...
2. Cole Hauser is an American actor best known for: "2 Fast 2 Furious", "Good Will Hunter", "Yellowstone", "ER", "Pitch Black", "Chronicles of Riddick", "Olympus Has Fallen", "A Good Day to Die Hard", "Dazed & Confused"; plus, "Transcendence."
Has a long & impressive career - even though he dropped out of high school - to pursue acting & professional soccer! He lives in LA.
Weird Shit: His great grandpa helped found the great Warner Bros Studios!
3. The poster for "The Cave" seems to correctly(?) describes the Earth as being a demonic location!! Remember, "Below Heaven, there's Earth!" "Below Earth, there's Hell"... "Below Hell, there's... the "Cave"!!
4 & 5. Behind-the-scenes photos of the movie's creature FX.
1906: The Earth is Not Hollow.
Intro: This is an American-Dutch horror flick, with an emphasis on the creature FX.
Exterior scenes were mostly shot in Bucharest, Romania. This serves as the story's above ground setting.
However, the watery underground cave system was shot at the Hidden World Cenote (a well) Park in Quintana Roo, Mexico.
Plot: A small team of spelunkers (cave explorers) enter a vast subterranean cavern, to find out what happened to an earlier expedition.
After following long, cramped stream, they become trapped a mile beneath the surface!
Worse, it soon becomes clear that something else lives down here. And, that they're not harmless...
The crew of the original expedition have been mutated into monsters - by underwater parasites!!
(Such a large & complex evolution would normally take millenia to occur.)
These things attack the cave divers & the movie just becomes another survival genre type of film.
One character is eaten outright. A 2nd one's hauled up a cliff face & another leaps onto the back of a flying thing!!
The rest of the crew are chased thru dark 'corridors' deep under of the Earth!
Following a cold stream, they emerge where it merges with a regular river.
Only 3 characters return to the upper world - 1 of which has been infected!!
(The parasite's been trying to get out onto the surface for millennia!)
Sometime later, 2 of the survivors meet at a cafe's sidewalk table.
There, it's revealed who's brought the parasite to the outer world...
Criticism: Decently crafted, but, not very original. The original creature FX are among the few, true moments of entertainment.
(What does that even mean?)
This work is kind of a mix of "Alien", "Predator" & quite a lot of the "Texas Chainsaw Massacre"!!
Should appeal to viewers who like unusual locations, a fast pace & lots of jump scares.
If you're seeking more credible fare, please exit this theater. We'll wait...
Now, although it's a violent movie, the monster attacks are way too frenetic!
There's splashing water, quick cuts & short peeks of the monsters' bodies to deal with.
Shooting movies this way, makes it very hard to follow what's going on.
But, I understand that it's done to save money on 'dressing' the set & to curtail the use of SFX...
Notes:
1. There seems to be some kind of evolution going on for subterranean stories on these list.
Specifically, the list starts out with whole cavern worlds serving as primal jungle adventures.
These existed in conjunction with ancient races & utopian fantasies...
Not so anymore.
By 2005, these locations are getting closer, becoming far more personal.
From wide, cradled worlds down to ever tight, suffocating spaces.
From primal sociopolitical concerns to basic human survival...
2. Movie fans know that, sometimes, two films will come out bearing the same premise!
So, audiences get to experience some rather similar dualities.
In 2005, we had "The Cave" & "The Descent" come out in the same year.
3. Both concern spelunking horrors, but, represent different subgenres: grim survival & revenge 'fantasy'!!
"The Cave" is a horror thriller - with ravaging monsters.
And, "The Descent" seems to be nothing but, more of the same.
Yet, "Decent's" monsters might be nothing more than a damaged psyche's self delusions or just plain lies...
Anyway, we've moved on, out from fantastical worlds & down into our own personal thoughts.
Which I find fascinating - &, scary as heck...
