What advice would you have for someone considering going into teaching
okay, first of all, I may not be the best person to ask this in some ways because I taught for three years and then left the profession while in the worst mental health of my life and currently do not have plans to go back to K-12 education. But also maybe I have some specific advice based on my experiences that can be helpful.
First of all, as someone who started teaching at 22--I would strongly caution you against that. It isn't because students don't respect you if you're young or whatever--I didn't feel like I had that problem. But it's because I think it's really helpful to have "real world" working experience and a bit more maturity before you go into the profession. In my experience, teachers who were career-switchers starting a second act in their late twenties or thirties were more successful and confident than those like me who were right out of college.
In terms of my pathway into the field: I initially wanted to be a college professor, but didn't get into any PhD programs when I applied my senior year of college (note: I also would not recommend applying to PhD programs as a college senior. You are much less likely to get in and for your own sake you should also try to get some out-of-academia experience before you make a huge commitment like that. Or go for a master's degree first if you can afford to.) I had considered being a history teacher for younger students since I was in about fifth grade because I loved history class so much, so I applied to middle and high school jobs. I didn't have any education degree or training, so I applied to jobs that would take people with a BA in their subject area but no education license or degree. This generally limits you to charter schools and private schools.
Two charter schools accepted me, both with licensure pathway programs where I would be working towards licensure while teaching at their school. I ended up getting a M.Ed at almost no cost to me through a program co-sponsored by the school I chose to work at and the university they had an arrangement with, which was a great opportunity despite the job itself/the school having a lot of issues + me generally finding the M.Ed program boring and not that helpful. But having a masters unlocks higher pay both in the school system + in some cases if you leave (I make about 5k more in my current non-teaching role than I would with just a BA).
Again, not to be like "just don't do what I did" but--don't necessarily assume that because you love the subject you will love teaching it, or specifically love teaching it to middle or high school students. I think I was naive about that. Also, there's a bit of a catch-22 regarding licensure and education degrees: I personally did not find the my education degree super helpful aside from the pay bump, but also a lot of schools that will hire someone without licensure or an ed degree will only do so because they are desperate and have high teacher turnover and that usually indicates major institutional problems. I actually had a much more positive experience at the charter school I started at than the public school I taught at for my third and final year of teaching, but the pay was really low and the school was poorly managed and had very high turnover and a chronic understaffing issue. Basically, if you're 22 no license no degree and the school still wants you--you may not want the school. But also unless you can find a way to get your ed degree debt-free like I did, going a more traditional degree -> student teaching -> full time job route may be a lot if you don't end up sticking with it. But also I kind of got thrown into the deep end and that wasn't great either, and I can't speak for more traditional student teaching or ed degree tracks. (Do not sign up for Teach for America. The program I did was sort of like an independent/smaller scale TFA, and it definitely has its flaws, but TFA, from the sound of it, is like that on steroids).
If you aren't sure you want to teach but you don't want to commit to either working at some charter school or an ed program, you might consider a tutoring position in a school, substitute teaching (most districts will take anyone with a BA + a background check, there's a huge shortage) or an education-related Americorps position. These might be good shorter-term ways to get experience in the education field. Unfortunately, the pay is not good for any of those options.
Also, just mindset-wise. When I started teaching, part of me thought that I was going to do it for a year and then go to grad school. Part of me thought it was my life's calling and I would do it forever. Neither of these are healthy mindsets. There is a huge issue with teachers where they/we feel like our job is a calling and we have to do it For The Kids so we just keep pushing ourselves through understaffing and burnout and horrible admin and rude kids and unbelievable amounts of take-home work etc etc and just keep repressing stress until we crash and burn. Try to stay out of this mindset because it will only hurt you.
Final commentary: if you are a female teacher (or basically anything that isn't a cis man, and probably a cis straight man at that, but I'm just speaking from personal experience) you will notice that your cis male teacher peers have a much easier time with commanding student respect and maintaining classroom management than you do. Many of your male teacher peers will assume this is because they are better teachers or naturally more authoritative. Sometimes, admin will also assume this. Try not to let it get you down or second-guess yourself--classroom discipline is genuinely harder for female teachers and it's not fair and it is because students are less likely to listen to female authority even if 90 percent of their teachers have been female. It sucks, but hopefully you will be able to work around it and being angry at or jealous of your male peer teachers will not help. (Though I have definitely been there.) (If you're a guy asking me this, anon, congrats, you get a +10 buff to classroom management! Try not to rub it in).
Also, if you are in any way neurodivergent or have a mental illness or anything--try to approach things thoughtfully. I had a lot of hope that I would be able to be a more approachable presence for students struggling + be able to teach from personal experience, and maybe I did, but teaching is really stressful and overstimulating even at the best of times, and there is a huge amount of paperwork + organization, and also a lot of social awareness required. If any of that is something you struggle with, be aware of the challenges going in.
I feel like I'm making teaching sound really negative, and there are definitely a lot of joyful aspects to the profession as well, but there's a reason I left, and also there are definitely things you can do to be more prepared + maybe in a better school system than I was. Good luck, and let me know if there's anything else I can help with.

Carol Fay Behn, age 95, passed away on Monday, May 22, 2023.
Carol Fay Askew was the firstborn of Charles Askew, a British-born immigrant, and Clara Egeland, the daughter of a Norwegian immigrant. Born in Detroit, MI February 21, 1928, Carol was followed several years later by her beloved brother, Donald. Together the four Askews traveled the US and spent summers on the Egeland family farm in North Dakota with cousins, aunts, and uncles. Carol learned to love and cherish family from her father and mother and was bitten by a travel bug at a very early age (her first passport was at age 3 when they visited her family in Bolton-Upon-Dearne, England).
After receiving her undergraduate from Bob Jones University, she began teaching elementary school in Kalamazoo, MI. It was during this time that she applied with a group of her friends to teach for the military as part of the Department of Defense program. Out of the six who applied, only two, were accepted! And from there, the world of travel expanded to Carol! Teaching for the Air Force for six years, she lived in Morocco (hopefully you were honored to hear a “when I was in Morocco” story), Germany, and Japan, and traveled to numerous countries besides (according to her count, she visited at least 50 various countries while overseas).
Returning to the US to help care for her ailing mother, Carol continued teaching in schools in the Harper Woods/Detroit area. She began working on her M.Ed. at Wayne State at this time as well. When her mother passed a few years later, Carol continued living with her father. Coming home allowed Carol, not only the opportunity to care for her mother, but some of her best memories of traveling from Detroit to Zion, IL to visit her brother and her “sister”, June, and their growing family. She proudly loved her nieces, Dawn, Tammy, Shelley, and Lisa.
It was during these Zion visits that Carol was introduced to Albert Behn through a neighbor. After a whirlwind courtship, Carol and Al were married July 6, 1968. She not only became a wife at this time, she became an instantaneous mother to Alan, Marty, Pat, and Karl, and two years later she became a mother again to Alison. Through the years she became a mother-in-law to Cindy, Randy, Wayne, and Sean. And she became a grandma to Greg, James (Jamie), Brittany (Arthur), Jon, Joe (Hannah), Riley (Zoey), Chelsea, Jessi (Mitch), Justin (Jenny), Jessica (Michael), Jackie, Joshua, and Nathanael (Rachel). And she passionately became a great grandma (GG) to Harper, Cora, Liam, Eliza, Maya, Marie, Everly, Mila, Grace, and Alice.
Family was everything to Carol. From her cousins to her nieces to her beloved brother Don and his wife June. To those who were family, Carol was sis, mein frau, mom, auntie, grandma, and GG. And to those who were blessed enough to know her, she was adopted mom, grandma, friend, and just sunshine. And her love of travel grew a heart of the nations in her as well. As many of her international friends would say, “she was loved across the globe” by so many she had met. She loved nothing more than generously opening her home to those who needed someplace, no matter where they were from!
The only thing Carol loved so much more than her family and friends was Jesus. She didn’t always know how to do it perfectly or show it, but she lived what she knew with all her heart, and she faithfully and boldly shared that belief with so many others! As another friend has said, “She was real people. You didn’t have to dig too hard”. She was genuine with her faith, with her feelings, and with her love.
Carol was a testimony to God’s grace. Over the last years as her body was slowing down, she was always speaking to her medical personnel about the Lord’s grace and goodness. Through all of her trying times she put herself in the arms of her loving Savior, such that even her doctors spoke in terms of “what her Lord has in store for her” (they had heard the message loud and clear).
By God’s grace, Carol Behn recognized her need for a Savior and placed her trust in God alone. And she and her family would desire nothing more than that her life would inspire you to seek that same trust in the Savior and peace as well!
Visitation will be 4 - 8 p.m. on Friday, May 26, 2023 at Ringa Funeral Home in Lake Villa. Additional visitation will be at Hope Presbyterian Church, 18215 West IL-120, Grayslake, IL on Saturday, May 27, 2023 from 8:30 a.m. until the time of service at 9:30. Burial will follow at Northshore Garden of Memories in North Chicago.
Please consider giving a gift to Flora and Attila Egressy who work with CRU in Hungary. Carol has loved and supported Flora even before she graduated university in Budapest, and Flora and her growing family have stayed with Carol many times. Carol was so excited to be able to see Flora’s third child who was just born in April.

Marika Jovich, who wants to go to school to become a physician, works menial tasks for Dr. Fletcher. She feels useless as she tries to save friends and neighbors from the ravages of the flu. In the midst of the pandemic, she watches the town shut down, young and old perish, and her medical dreams all but evaporate. Kaly Monroe used to be a half-good woman of the night. She left that life to raise her daughter, Annie, and live and work with her long-lost mother, Tara McClane. Kaly waits for her husband, Tommy, to return from the war. Word from the east is that soldiers are dying of influenza and she prays that Tommy is not one of them. When an out-of-town woman named Amelia suddenly dies in Dr. Fletcher's office, both women try to learn more about the mysterious woman and the circumstances regarding her death. Is she another casualty of the pandemic, or the victim of manmade foul play? Who is this stranger, and is her demise a portent of the fate that awaits the residents of Butte? Praise for Beautiful Ghost: “Marsenich doesn't just describe the place and times, she conjures it up like time travel.” ~ Amazon Review by Ellen Leahy Howell Buy Link: Universal Buy Link: https://books2read.com/u/m06BOJ AUTHOR BIO: MILANA MARSENICH   Award-winning author, Milana Marsenich lives in Northwest Montana near Flathead Lake at the base of the beautiful Mission Mountains. The flu might have killed her, but strong hands stopping her breath were not far behind. She hadn’t been running from the flu. She’d been running to the flu. The striations on her neck had blended with the blue gray of her skin and, in the end, were barely visible. Amelia’s coat had been left in the sick room, folded, and put on a shelf. Marika covered her hand with a cloth and reached into the pockets to see if the woman had carried a clue to her identity, to her family in Philadelphia. Most travelers did. A piece of paper crinkled under Marika’s fingers. She pulled it out and unfolded it. The scribbled lead of the pencil had faded and fallen into the folds. Still, it was readable: J.K., Butte, Montana. Marika wrapped the paper in the cloth and put them both on top of the filing cabinet. Thinking of the nursing instructions command: wash your hands with soap and water every time you think the word “pee,” she rushed to the washroom to do just that. New Construction Home Buyers Expect Healthier & Smarter Homes
by Melisa Camp, M.Ed. LEED AP-Homes
GREEN, ABR, PMN, PSA, e-PRO, AHWD
Associate Broker, HomeSmart Phoenix, AZ
Selling high-performance homes is an ongoing process of understanding the evolution of building science and technology and communicating that to prospective home buyers in a way that creates value. REALTORS® absolutely have to keep pace with our buyers and help them to prioritize and anticipate their needs. We also need to uphold fiduciary duties to sellers and ensure we are not leaving money on the table by undervaluing high-performance features.
New home buyers today are smarter than ever and paying attention to details. Buyers have much more information and knowledge than they did when I first started 15 years ago and knowledge is power. New home buyers definitely expect a higher caliber and quality built home- especially when we have the opportunity of building from the ground up. When buyers understand the benefits they are more likely to pay a premium price.
Tumblr media
Buyers desire the benefits of a sustainable home whether it be cost savings, comfort, health, safety, social responsibility, or any combination of benefits. Cost savings remains the universal sales pitch but I see health catching up quickly on the list of priorities in the wake of the COVID 19 pandemic and increase in buyers working from home.
Indoor airPLUS, LEED, NGBS and ZERH certifications and other searchable MLS fields like ‘fresh-air mechanical’ and ‘no VOC paint’ are a great place to start seeking healthier homes. REALTORS® representing home builders need to be aware of and use all available green fields when marketing or else it will be next to impossible for buyers needing specific home features to be found. Green MLS fields are an important yet completely underutilized marketing resource.
Utilities savings can easily be quantified into dollars however, it is more challenging to value intangible but important health benefits into dollars. Nevertheless, it is our job as competent advisors to understand how to take into consideration all green and sustainable features when suggesting market value to clients.
I cannot stress how important it is that REALTORS® know their listing details inside and out, forward and backward. You don't want the client knowing more than you do. It is imperative that salespersons educate themselves and builders educate their salespersons on the green features, sustainable design, and invisible but valuable investments. There are powerful tools like the Appraisal Institute’s Green and Energy Efficient Addendum and PVvalue.com to aid in the adjustment in value for high-performance home features and energy efficient assets.
Tumblr media
Be addicted to learning and earn NAR’s GREEN designation; this is something I highly recommend as it is the best core knowledge upon which REALTORS® can build a strong foundation. Also, please keep learning and building competency with Intro to Sustainability and Resiliency: What REALTORS® Need to Know course at learning.realtor along with several micro-courses on the topic of sustainability that I helped write and produce as my pandemic passion project.
*This work is to be published by the National Association of REALTORS® as part of a practitioner perspective for the newest version of the New Home Construction course.
