The summer is coming to an end, and sadly, the summer holiday is over. It’s back to work again, back to the daily routine. But that doesn’t mean that I can’t still enjoy the memory of our vacation! If at all possible (considering days off from work and of course our budget) we try to visit the United States every Summer. This year we had a special destination: Hawaii.

So our annual road trip was a lot shorter in driving miles this year: we traveled to Oahu, to Maui and to the Big Island. Although we didn’t make a lot of miles driving around like we normally do, we had our fair share of travel related hassle. Flying from one island to the next and picking up a new rental car three times does require some careful planning! But thanks to Alamo and IslandAir, the trip was very smooth.

First stop: Oahu. Most people look at me with question marks floating above their head, but when I add to that: “Honolulu, Waikiki” recognition dawns. Those are the hotspots the island is well known for, but there’s much more to enjoy. Of course, we had a mental image too, it was what prompted the idea to visit in the first place: we wanted to see the stomping grounds of Magnum PI for ourselves. Not that I was under any illusion that I’d find Tom Selleck himself. At least not looking as good as he did back then!

Having seen the show in the 80’s as it first aired on television it made an impression and it’s still one of our favorites. You wouldn’t believe how many times we have watched the series ever since we invested in buying the DVD’s. We couldn’t wait to see the Robin Masters estate, the base of TC’s Island Hoppers and some other landmarks that appear in the show. As soon as we were settled in we drove around the island visiting the sites.

Robin Masters’ Estate

The Robin Masters estate is privately owned which means it can’t be visited. A pity, as we certainly weren’t the only crazy people to see it out. While we were peering through the gates, that were in dire need of some renovation, other tourists were looking for it too. This house with the tidal pool was sold in 2015, rumors say to a friend of Obama’s. We couldn’t see a lot as foliage obstructed our view, but we did see that it didn’t look as grand anymore. Still, it was very recognizable.

Pier TC’s Island Hoppers

The pier that housed TC’s base for his Island Hoppers operation in the show was still there, and is called the Makai Research Pier. The War Memorial Natatorium was still closed as it was during the Magnum episodes and still waiting for someone willing to invest in restoring it. The Byodo-In Temple impressed me, not only because of the building itself, but also because it was part of a huge funeral area called the Valley of Temples that was home to burials of all kinds of cultures and religions.

We saw the King Kamehameha statue in the center of Honolulu, with the Iolani Hale behind it. Might be better known to many of you as the offices of Hawaii 50, another very successful series that brings the Hawaiian feeling across so well and in reality

Which brings me to another part of our visit to Oahu: Honolulu. We visited the Iolani Palace, home to the Royal Family when Hawaii was still a separate country with its own King. The Palace was 130 years old, nowhere near as old as some of the country houses we are used to visiting in the UK. But it was the first house where we had to use cover slip-ons and rightly so, it was an amazing place. I was surprised to hear that the Palace had electricity before the White House or even Buckingham Palace did. The Royal Family was very Europe-oriented, and it showed throughout the house.

Waikiki was every bit as you’d expect. Crowded, lots of surfers, skimpy bikinis and a laid back feeling to the place. Duke Kahanamoku statue ( Native Hawaiian competition swimmer who popularized the ancient Hawaiian sport of surfing) had some flower lei’s around his feet. Even fully dressed as we were and not into surfing, we picked up on the Hang Loose vibe. One other place in Honolulu brought us all kinds of joy: Ala Moana Shopping Center. I’ll gladly admit that although I love the vistas nature has to offer and enjoy some cultural pursuits, a good mall gets my blood pumping too.

The last place I want to mention is perhaps best known over the world: Pearl Harbor. A sight of historic significance, with the USS Arizona Memorial as its most impressive experience. The way the sunken ships hull is still bleeding oil after all those years seems only fitting!

Hawaii - Land of Rainbows

“Aloha is more than a greeting or salutation. It is a condition, a way of life, a mind-set and an attitude.“

Hawaii is everything you dream about and more! I’ve had the pleasure to visit Oahu and Maui already. Kauai is next on my list. I want to share some of my tips and impressions while I can’t wait to go again myself!

Places To See & Things To Do

If you’re travelling to Hawaii, you’re hopefully a nature lover because this place will blow your mind! Make sure to have cash on you for entrance and parking lot fees. Also: different from what you’re used to, places such as blowholes and cliffs are not necessarily fenced off. Don’t endanger your safety for the best selfie!

OAHU

Makapu’u Point, Kalanianaole Hwy, Waimanalo Great views of the coastline and the ocean. There’s also a tiny lighthouse that you can spot on your way up, just follow the trail!

Diamond Head, Diamond Head Rd, Honolulu Diamond Head is a volcanic tuff cone, close to Honolulu. You can even walk there if you want. The hike is easy, an about two hour roundtrip and you’re rewarded with a beautiful view from the top. Entrance fee: $1 per person or $5 per car. Cash only!

Manoa Falls, parking lot located at the end of Manoa Road, Honolulu Getting to the falls requires a short hike through the surrounding rainforest. Definitely touristy, but that also means that the trail is well-maintained and it’s easy to find. It’s so crazy, though! You take a twenty minute drive from Honolulu and then you’re standing in the middle of a rainforest #mindblown Bring rain coats/umbrellas!

North Shore That’s where the surf action is at! Definitely worth the track across the island. If you’re there around November/December definitely keep a look-out for the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing. You’re chance to watch the world’s best surfers in their natural habitat! Parking is an issue during that time, use public transportation or the hourly shuttle from Turtle Bay Resort if possible!

Football Game at Aloha Stadium, 99-500 Salt Lake Blvd, Aiea Loved the atmosphere! I don’t have the opportunity to watch football games at home so I enjoyed it a lot. And the team from the University of Hawaii sure has the best name: Rainbow Warriors!

Snorkeling at Hanauma Bay, 7455 Kalanianaole Hwy, Honolulu The area is pretty crowded with tourists but once you put your snorkeling gear on and your head under water you understand why this place is so popular. I’ve never had the opportunity to see so many different kinds of fish (and pretty large ones, too!). Make sure to not step on the reefs. It’s a nature preserve and reefs are very fragile ecosystems (Don’t worry, though! You will get an introduction beforehand telling you all about that). You can rent snorkeling equipment and they have lockers for your valuables (for a fee).

MAUI

Ali’i Kula Lavender Farm, 1100 Waipoli Road, Kula You can smell the lavender scent from the foot of the mountain. Such a serene place, it’s like wellness for your mind and lungs. You can just wander around the farm or do a guided tour. They also have a small shop where you can buy everything lavender-related. How about lavender jam?

Haleakala National Park Very popular to watch the sunset from the summit at 10,023 feet! I went there during the day and it was just as stunning. The ground is a rich red-brown, rocks strewn all around – it’s like walking on the moon. It was pretty cloudy but when it cleared up, it was possible to see all the way to the ocean. Due to the elevation, the temperatures are quite chilly up there. Be sure to pack some warm clothes!

Road to Hana The Hana Highway is 64.4 miles long, connecting the cities of Kahului and Hana. It takes you about five hours to go there and back without any stops, so plan for more time and make sure to bring enough food and drinks. Last chance to buy what you’re missing for the road is in Paia, for example, at the Hana Picnic Lunch Company, 99 Hana Hwy. This will keep your brain cells working and you will need them on this winding, sometimes only one lane wide road. With all the bridges you have to cross, there are some major Jurassic Park-vibes going on. Make sure to stop at the Upper Waikani Falls (around mile marker 19)!

Horseback Riding at Ironwood Ranch, 22 Hui A Naplili, Lahaina They offer amazing tours around the area. Our guide was super nice and knowledgeable about the landscape and the plants growing there. Fleming Beach, Lower Honoapiilani Rd, Lahaina All you need for your day at the beach: Nice secluded area, sand, shade & the ocean!

Nakalele Blowhole, Honoapiilani Highway (Hwy 30, between mile marker 38 & 39) This place very much is a spectacle of nature; the ocean crashing against the cliffs created ragged rock formations. The blowhole is just the cherry on top! Be sure to not get too close. This is best admired from afar.

Historic Walking Tour, Lahaina If you’re interested in the history of Hawaii, you can do a free walking tour. Just find the map online and then discover the city and the tales of Hawaiin kings and queens on your own.

Food & Drinks

Hawaii is not the cheapest place in the world as a lot of the food has to be imported but there are still a lot of great places that won’t ruin your vacation budget. Be sure to take advantage of being on a tropical island: give the pineapples and bananas a taste and try the fresh fish and the homegrown coffee!

OAHU

Island Vintage Coffee, located in the Royal Hawaiian Center, 2301 Kalakaua Avenue #C215, Honolulu One of my absolute favorites! Amazing choice of dishes, always fresh, always delicious. And you haven’t lived if you haven’t tried their coffee (Kona coffee is what it’s all about, peeps!) Also my first time trying a Poke Bowl. Loved it! Beware: Food is only served until 3 pm! Recommendations: Original Acai Bowl, Breakfast Plate, Shoyu Salmon

ABC Store, Honolulu You can probably find one around the next corner. They are literally everywhere! Great to grab a quick snack and something to drink for your day at the beach.

Giovanni’s Shrimp Truck, 66-472 Kamehameha Hwy, Haleiwa People rave about this place! Even though I’m not much of a sea food person myself, I had to try it. Just went for the ‘Shrimp Scampi’ and it was nothing short of amazing! Cash only!

Matsumoto Shave Ice, 66-111 Kamehameha Hwy, Suite #605, Haleiwa Yes, there are loads of tourists there. Is it worth it? As you can’t leave Hawaii without trying shave ice: Definitely! Just order your favorite rainbow colors in ice form.

Surf N Turf Tacos, 2310 Kuhio Avenue, Suite #100, Honolulu The place is small but don’t let that fool you: It has one of the best fish tacos!

Heavenly Island Lifestyle, 342 Seaside Avenue, Honolulu Great décor to float your vacation boat, outdoor & indoor seating, the friendliest staff! Local and organic food and they have amazing & inexpensive drinks as well!

MAUI

Paia Fish Market Restaurant, 632 Front St, Lahaina Fresh fish every day! One of the perks of being on an island. Try the ‘Cajun Style.’ Super tasty!

Aloha Mixed Plate, 1251 Front St, Lahaina Great selection of food and drinks! What makes this restaurant so special is the torch-lit outdoor seating, directly by the ocean.

Bad Ass Maui, 671 Front St, Lahaina Another place for your Kona coffee cravings and it is as good as its name suggests. The shop is quite small so keep your eyes open. You can also do some shopping while you’re at it: mugs, clothing, hats… whatever is still missing in your souvenir collection!

I hope I could induce some excitement with this little compilation. It’s also worth mentioning that the people are so, so friendly. Everyone is relaxed, even in places such as Honolulu, which can get really busy. You have the impression you’re a long way away from the mainland (both literally and mentally). Let’s be real: There is only one City by the Bay! But if even thinking about your monthly rent or mortgage bill makes you reach for the anti-anxiety meds, you might want to consider Raleigh.

Hear us out. The metro has the fifth-highest concentration of high-tech jobs in the nation. And the cost of living is just a fraction of that in San Francisco—or any of the other elite urban tech hubs like Boston or Seattle.

Runner-up: New Orleans, La., with its food and nightlife

Next time you’re eating butter-doused popcorn at the movies, just remember that film could very well have been made in Savannah. Yep, you heard us right: This is the Hollywood of the South. Savannah ranks No. 3 nationally in actor, producer, and director jobs.

The recent “Baywatch” movie, starring Zac Efron and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, was filmed in the Gothic Southern city, as was Robert De Niro’s “Dirty Grandpa.” Please don’t blame Savannah for those! Let’s focus instead on Ben Affleck’s “Live by Night” or Channing Tatum’s “Magic Mike XXL.” Or “Forrest Gump”!

But it wouldn’t be truly Hollywood-esque without a good, old-fashioned celebrity arrest. “Transformers” actor Shia LaBeouf was booked in Savannah for disorderly conduct and public intoxication while on a production break this summer.

The city’s popularity with filmmakers is in part thanks to a tax credit the state began offering in 2008. From 2010 to 2014, filmmakers spent $58 million to produce movies in Savannah, says Trip Tollison, president and CEO of the Savannah Economic Development Authority. They spent $60 million in 2016 alone.

If you plan to relocate, don’t forget to pack your sunscreen. Savannah has some fantastic beaches at Tybee Island.

Myrtle Beach was named one of the top 25 favorite beach towns of 2016 by Travel & Leisure and one of the best family beach vacation spots by U.S. News and World Report. It has a beautiful 60-mile string of beaches dotted with hotels, mini golf courses, and boardwalks.

You might miss the luaus, the sublime surfing, and the soy-and-sesame-bathed raw fish in poke bowls, nut you’ll have plenty to do here, and lots more money to do it with. That’s probably why Myrtle Beach welcomed more than 18 million visitors over the summer of 2016.

And if you’re a business owner, you know that vacationers keep the lights on. Myrtle Beach has tons of tourists, with holes burning in their wallets. They’re well-advised to hold on tight to those wallets, as the city is known to have a higher-than-average crime rate. But things are getting better, and the place is growing.

Runner-up: Orlando Fla., with off-the-charts tourism, Disney-style

Denver, Colo. Median home list price: $499,500 Matchup: Kansas City, Mo. Median home list price: $245,800 Matching metrics: Hipster scenes and car culture

Kansas City is no longer a stodgy Midwestern metropolis. The city’s downtown has been transformed over the last few years, and now it’s home to about 20 breweries. Heck, Kansas City was even the first market to get Google Fiber’s broadband service in 2012, which gave its small tech sector a turbo boost.

Now that you have a few cocktails in you, head over to the First Fridays outdoor event to enjoy street music, sidewalk vendors, food trucks, and art exhibits.

Denver refugees don’t have to give up the great outdoors, either. They can hike the Little Blue Trace Trail at Fleming Park, which runs alongside the Little Blue River.

So what if Philadelphia doesn’t win the Super Bowl every year? It’s a darned good sports city in its own right. Indeed, the city is sixth in the nation for pro sports championships, four spots behind Boston. Plus, there’s nothing like eating a Philly cheesesteak at a Phillies game.

Built in a similar colonial era, Philadelphia has housing and city architecture that many a Bostonian would appreciate. The Philadelphia cityscape is a mix of Georgian, Greek Revival, and Victorian architecture.

Rest assured, you wouldn’t be the first Bostonian to leave for Philadelphia. Mr. Hundred-Dollar Bill himself Benjamin Franklin did the same almost 300 years ago.

OK, maybe there is a reason to leave the Apple. But once you’ve tasted it, where else can you go?

There really is only one more affordable city that could hope to do the city justice: Chicago.

Even the most stubborn New Yorker might be won over by Chitown. The Chicago skyline is gorgeous, with Willis Tower doing a fine Empire State Building impression. Once a laggard in the foodie department, it’s now home to some of the best America has to offer. They’re just cheaper. And yes, the city also has its own public transportation system. (Sorry, it, too, tends to keep you waiting.)

On a weekend walk through the nation’s capital, you’ll see the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial. They’re beautiful. But are they worth the high price tag you’ll pay each month in rent or for your mortgage? Hey, it’s not easy on many government salaries!

That’s why folks may want to consider Trenton. We know it’s a stretch. But the city has government and nonprofit jobs to spare: Nearly one in three jobs here is in the government sector. It may not have D.C.’s museums or a “House of Cards” power scene, but does the nation’s capital have an annual Pork Roll Festival? (We honestly don’t know.)

Keep in mind it’s only 26 minutes to Philadelphia, about an hour from New York…and if you get really homesick, two hours from D.C. on Amtrak.

Runner-up: Tallahassee, Fla., an even more unlikely government-driven economy

Miami, Fla. Median home list price: $387,500 Matchup: Phoenix, Ariz. Median home list price: $317,200 Matchup metric: Sunshine and baby boomers baking in it

Hurricanes are becoming more frequent—and the cost of flood insurance isn’t going down, so maybe you’re a little less adamant about keeping your beachfront abode. If that’s the case, give Phoenix a look.

Despite lots of development, Phoenix still has some reasonably priced cribs. And nearby Scottsdale has grown its tourism in recent years and is trying to market itself as a party-seekers’ destination.

Another perk? Phoenix has much lower humidity. Hair problems solved.

“If I had to grade Raleigh, I would say A-plus for the cost of living and quality of life,” says Sniff. He admits the culture and nightlife aren’t quite on a par with S.F., but adds: “It would surprise people how good it is.”

There’s the Contemporary Art Museum in the city’s warehouse district that features emerging talent. And a bar scene with its own brand of quirkiness. The Angus Barn Restaurant features a butt-kicking contraption that does just what it says it will. And Flex, a popular gay club, hosts karaoke every nearly every night of the week, with the occasional drag queen show mixed in. “Islands in the Stream,” anyone?

Runner-up: New Orleans, with its food and nightlife
