Let Biden’s LNG pause stand!

I’m writing as a constituent and someone who’s deeply worried about the climate crisis to say that Congressional investigations into President Biden's pause on new Liquefied Natural Gas export permits are unnecessary and ill-informed. The facts are clear that this is a temporary pause on new LNG permits - it will not affect existing exports or new LNG export terminals that are already working or under construction. Second, only Department of Energy permits, and only those applying to LNG exports, will be covered by the pause. Our allies in Europe and beyond will not face shortages or disruptions in their fuel supplies as a result. Climate scientists and energy economists are clear: LNG is already bad for the climate, and is already diving up prices for US consumers, at a time when our allies in Europe are already reducing demand for fossil fuels. The LNG pause is a smart decision by President Biden, and Congress should focus its effort on making it permanent, and accelerating the transition to clean, renewable energy at home and abroad. Thanks.

I am thrilled that the U.S. finalized strong climate change rule for cars yesterday. These rules will force automakers to ramp up electric vehicle sales and slash emissions from gas-powered models. The rule also would reduce fine particulate matter — the most risky form of pollution to our health. Only seven countries met global guidelines for it last year. The fact that the U.S. is leading the world on climate action is great news!

I know that fossil fuel companies are likely to challenge this rule. I want you to stand with the Biden administration and fight back. We are in a climate emergency and we are losing. We need to do much, much more to avoid the worst consequences of a warming planet. This strong rule is a needed next step. I expect Congress to back it and do even more.

As for the Republicans’ trying to defund President Biden’s green tax credits? Absolutely unacceptable. I consider it an outrage that GOP lawmakers are putting oil and gas companies’ profits above our children’s futures. They need to stop right now. Thanks.

#Repost @kyivindependent_official with @use.repost_ . . . Outgoing U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin announced on Jan. 9 a $500 million aid package for Ukraine, including air defense missiles, ammunition, and equipment for F-16 fighter jets.

The package was unveiled at the Ramstein summit in Germany. It is expected to be the final U.S. defense tranche provided by the Biden administration before Donald Trump takes office on Jan. 20.

Trump’s imminent return to the White House has caused concern about the future of U.S. support for Ukraine, as the president-elect has often criticized the Biden administration’s assistance provided to Kyiv.

The incoming U.S. leadership changes have also cast doubt on the future of the Ramstein-format Ukraine Defense Contact Group, a coalition of 57 countries that has been coordinating aid for Ukraine since April 2022.

“Month after month, members of this Contact Group have helped provide, produce, and sustain the systems and the munitions that Ukraine needs,” Austin said in his address to the meeting alongside President Volodymyr Zelensky and German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius.

“So we must not let up. That’s why I am announcing today another Presidential Drawdown Authority package, valued at approximately $500 million.

“It includes additional missiles for Ukrainian air defense, more ammunition, and more air-to-ground munitions and other equipment to support Ukraine’s F-16s.”

Biden Commutes Sentences of 37 Death Row Inmates Before Trump’s Return to Office

In one of his final acts in office, President Joe Biden commuted the sentences of 37 federal death row inmates, replacing their executions with life imprisonment without parole. The decision aligns with his long-standing opposition to the federal death penalty and comes ahead of former President Donald Trump’s return to power, during which Trump has vowed to resume and expand federal executions.

Three high-profile inmates—Robert D. Bowers, Dylann Roof, and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev—remain on federal death row due to the severity of their crimes involving mass killings driven by hate or terrorism.

Biden defended the commutations as a moral stance, supported by faith leaders, civil rights groups, and even some victims’ families. A retired police officer, Donnie Oliverio, whose partner was killed by one of the inmates, applauded the decision as consistent with Catholic values.

Despite this, Biden has faced criticism from Republicans, some Democrats, and victims’ families for not pushing further on his campaign promise to abolish the federal death penalty. Pressure also mounts for Biden to address sentencing disparities in outdated drug laws, particularly those that disproportionately impact Black Americans.

While Biden's administration previously implemented a moratorium on federal executions, critics remain divided over his broader clemency efforts, which also included 1,500 commutations for non-violent offenders and other controversial pardons.
