On 10th March 560, St Kessog, the Irish missionary in the Lennox area and southern Perthshire, was killed.
It’s not often we go back over 1500, but Kessog was an important religious figure back then, and is considered to have been patron saint of Scotland before we were even a nation, and certainly before St Andrew
We know precious little about Saint Kessog, also known as MacKessog, Kessock or MacKessock, but it was a long-standing tradition in the Celtic Church that he was murdered by pagans on March 10, 520, and that date remains his feast day even now.
As is always the case in the days before any sort of written historical record was made in Scotland, much of what we do know about Kessog is based on oral tradition – which by its nature tends towards the legendary and even the mythical.
There is no doubt, however, that Kessog existed and that he was a Christian missionary mainly in the lands we know as the Lennox, around Dumbarton, but almost everything else about him must be taken on trust though, as we shall see, there are considerable clues about him scattered around Scotland.
Tradition has it that Kessog was born into a royal family of Munster in Ireland, perhaps the King of Cashel, around the year 460.
One of the myths about him concerns a supposed incident in his childhood. The sons of a number of princes who were visiting the king were drowned in a swimming accident that may well have been caused by Kessog, who was the only survivor.
Nothing daunted, the boy took to his knees and prayed all night, and in the morning the drowned children were restored to life, thereby averting likely wars with the various princes.
He was destined for a holy life, and as a youngster he came under the influence of St Patrick who would then have been in his 70s. Patrick had by then created hundreds of churches and other Christian institutions across Ireland, and is said to have personally baptised 100,000 people.
Patrick sent Kessog to the monastery of another saint, Mo Chaoi, often written as Malachoi, which was located at Nendrum in County Down. Mochaoi, whose real name was Caolan, had been sent by Patrick to found the monastery which lasted until the Vikings sacked it in the 10th century.
Having been ordained a monk and then a bishop, it was decided that Kessog should go to the land of the Scoti, the Irish tribes who had made their home in what is now Argyll, creating a kingdom which is known as Dalriada.
It is not known why Kessog then struck east into the “debatable lands” between the Scots, the Picts and the Britons of the Kingdom of Strathclyde headquartered at Dumbarton. But if he was indeed a disciple of Patrick then there is an obvious connection, for despite all claims to the contrary, the most favoured location for the birth and youth of Patrick is Old Kilpatrick on the River Clyde just 10 miles from Loch Lomond which lay at the heart of the lands of Lennox. Indeed Lennox derives from Levenax, pertaining to the River Leven which courses from Loch Lomond to the River Clyde.
It is not plausible that Patrick decided to send a missionary to an area he would have known well in his childhood?
The Lennox would not become a recognised earldom until many centuries later, but Kessog appears to have become the apostle of the Lennox area, preaching the Christian faith all around Loch Lomond and through into Perthshire and as far north as modern Inverness. If that was the case, then he preached the gospel to the Picts 40 years earlier than Columba.
I wrote earlier about the clues to Kessog and where he worked, and those clues are place names. The saint is said to have founded a monastery on an island in Loch Lomond, Inchtavannach, which means island of the monk’s house. Local tradition has it that Inchtavannach’s highest point Tom nan Clag, the hill of the bell, got its name from Kessog installing a bell on the summit which with he summoned monks and laity to prayer. Certainly there was a bell associated with Kessog as it was listed in the funeral investitures of the Earldom of Perth as late as 1695.
Going north, a hill near the River Teith in Perthshire is known as Tom na Chessaig or Hill of Kessog, and there were mediaeval churches named after Kessog in Auchterarder and Comrie.
South Kessock in Inverness, North Kessock on the Black Isle and the Kessock Bridge on the north side of Inverness are named after him, reflecting the long tradition that the saint preached thereabouts.
Kessog’s successful mission to the people around Loch Lomond angered the local pagans possibly led by druids. They are said to have either killed Kessog themselves or bribed mercenaries to do it.
The place of his martyrdom is traditionally at Bandry Bay near Luss village on the Lochside – well known as the location for Glendarroch in STV’s Take the High Road soap. A cairn of stones marked the site of his death for centuries.
Luss has long been associated with Kessog, as he founded a church there in 510. The church was later named after him and an effigy of the saint dating from before the Reformation can be found in the church.
There is also St Kessog’s RC Church and St Kessog’s Primary School in Balloch at the southern end of Loch Lomond.
So plenty of local Lennox connections to Kessog but was he patron saint of Scotland?
The cult of Andrew developed fairly late in Christian life in Scotland, and it is known that Robert the Bruce, for one, had a particular veneration for Kessog.
The Bruce took refuge at Luss in 1306 and was cared for by a local laird. As king he would later grant a charter to John of Luss “for the reverence and honour of our patron, the most holy man, the blessed Kessog”.
In 1323 the king made the church of Luss and its surroundings a place of sanctuary “to God and the blessed Kessog”, as the charter states.
Scottish soldiers in the War of Independence also shouted the saint’s name as a battle cry, and relics of Kessog were said to have been carried into battle by the Scots.
In one modern respect Kessog is up among the top Scottish saints – along with Andrew, Ninian, Magnus, and Mungo, he has an oil field named after him in the North Sea.

All my good intentions to keep and share good notes from trips are falling apart. I'm still slowly photo-editing Ireland images between projects but am heading to New York City tomorrow, so before I completely forget everything, here are some notes.
For hotels, we stayed at The Alex for the first night in Dublin. The bed was wildly comfortable, which I particularly appreciated in my jetlag state. After Dublin, we headed north to see the Giant's Causeway but somewhat foolishly didn't spend a night up there and drove directly back south to Doolin, where we stayed at the Elfin Cottage. We stumbled across the cottage on tiktok and it was as cute as advertised but also very cold. After Doolin, we spent two days in Kenmare at Sheen Falls Lodge. They organized a falconry session for us, and it was an excellent location for doing the Ring of Kerry drive, though I'd suggest skipping their onsite restaurants. Next up and pictured above was Cashel Palace Hotel, which was by far my favorite hotel of the trip. Lastly, to make the morning commute to the airport smooth, we headed back to Dublin and stayed at The Merrion.
For meals, lots of folks said to have low expectations, but Ireland just has a tight greatest-hits list for meals. If you like chowder and fish and chips, you'll probably be happy enough. We had an exceptionally great dinner in Dublin at Spitalfields and a great meal at the Cashel Hotel's restaurant, The Bishop's Buttery.

Where Do I Start?
Ireland is beautiful. Beautiful. My mouth drops open at every curve in the road (and there are so many curves...). We've already roamed three castles and communed with fairies. I've groaned over the deliciousness of Irish stew and, though I'm not really a bread eater, slices of warm traditional Irish soda bread smeared with local butter that is out of this word. Ireland does simple pleasures in the very best way.
So. We landed, collected our bags, and picked up our rental car. Mickey has done an incredible job of driving from the right side of the car on the left side of the road. This country is filled with round-abouts and entering them by heading left goes against every natural instinct we have. I'm so impressed with his steady hand and ability to adapt. It's not for the faint of heart and he's gotten us safely to every spot for the last three days. We haven't even been honked at yet. Maybe our sign helps.

Our first day was spent in Dublin. After an overnight flight we did what we always do - got out in the fresh air and waked around! We visited Merrian Park and saw Oscar Wilde's monument.

As well as the tribute to Dermot Morgan (of Father Ted fame). We absolutely oved him. HIs memorial is called The Joker's Chair and a plaque nearby reads, "….and all the rest is laughter, laughter liberating, laughter to be remembered."

We roamed the beautiful grounds of Trinity University.

That's a former provost, much beloved, who once said that women would attend Trinity "over my dead body". It's now tradition for young women graduating from the school to have a picture snapped with him on their special day. Be careful what you wish for, sir. We strolled and got ourselves good and tired. It's important for us to get on local time/bed time the first night. Makes the rest of the trip so much easier.
Our first day ended with a dinner of fish and chips for Mickey and Irish stew for me.

Talk about comfort food. I've never tasted a stew so good. Ever. Those carbs helped me sleep like a baby. The next morning we pointed our car south and headed out of Dublin.

Our first stop was Rock of Cashel. It's been the seat of Irish kings since the 4th century. For many centuries it was pagan kings, then Christianity arrived, religion rued the and, and there were "Bishop Kings". The interesting man who provided us with a tour before we roamed around on our own was a wealth of information (I mean, it's his job...) and kept stressing that it's not a castle, it's a religious compound. He repeated this over and over, and as soon as we got back in the car we agreed that if kings lived there until 1749, it's a castle. Yes, there's a chapel and a cathedral, but it was the castle from which Ireland was rued for centuries. Look at us arguing with the experts. Anyway, it was gorgeous.

SAINTS FOR JULY 24
St. John Boste, 1594 A.D. One of the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales. He was born at Dufton, at Westmoreland, England, and studied at Oxford. Becoming a Catholic in 1576, he went to Reims and received ordination in 1581. John went back to England where he worked in the northern parts of the kingdom and became the object of a massive manhunt. He was betrayed, arrested, and taken to London. There he was crippled on the rack and returned to Dryburn near Durham. On July 24, he was hanged, drawn, and quartered. John was canonized by Pope Paul VI in 1970 as a martyr of Durham.

Little is known about them with any certainty, although according to tradition they were two princes of Mercia who were baptized by St. Chad and were swiftly executed by their pagan father. They were martyred at Stone, Staffordshire

Bl. Joseph Fernandez, Roman Catholic Dominican Martyr of Vietnam. He was sent there in 1805 as an ordained priest and appointed provincial vicar of the mission. He was beheaded. Feastday July 24
ST. CHRISTINE, VIRGIN AND MARTYR-Like many ancient martyrs, Christina was a young woman who, on account of her love of Christ, found enemies within her own family. She was tortured by her own father to induce her to renounce her faith. After his death, the torture continued, until, shot by arrows, she won the crown of martyrdom.

St. Menefrida, 5th century. Patron saint of Tredresick, in Cornwall, England. She belonged to the family of Brychan of Brecknock.
St. Declan. St. Declan First bishop of Ardmore in Ireland July 24 was baptized by St. Colman, and preached the faith in that country a little before the arrival of St. Patrick, who confirmed the Episcopal see of Ardmore, in a synod at Cashel in 448. Many miracles are ascribed to St. Declan, and he has ever been much honored in the viscounty of Dessee, anciently Nandesi.

Thomas Croke was born in Castlecor (parish of Kilbrin), Co Cork, in 1824. He became the second Catholic Bishop of Auckland New Zealand before returning to Ireland as Archbishop of Cashel and Emly. Many of you will know that 1st of February is the date upon which St. Brigid's Day is always celebrated in Ireland. You may have also heard of Imbolg or Imbolc, the ancient and probably pre-Christian "cross-quarter" festival marking the beginning of spring?
In this age of the internet, social media and search engines, when we seek answers to simple questions, people often just take the first answer that comes along as some sort of definitive truth.
When you do a Google search for Imbolc, you will find many websites that claim that it is celebrated on 1st of February every year. Some of those websites even say it is the halfway point between winter solstice and vernal or spring equinox. But it's not. A simple calculation reveals that the cross-quarter festival of Imbolc can NEVER fall on 1st of February. In fact, it generally falls between 3rd and 6th February - it is a moveable feast because of such things as leap years and because the moment of winter solstice (the sun's lowest declination) does not always occur on 21st December, and the vernal equinox does not always fall on 20th March.
Every year on 1st February, without fail, I see many Facebook profiles, groups and pages wishing everyone a "happy Imbolc". I do not celebrate Imbolc on 1st February because of the previously-mentioned fact that it cannot fall on 1st February. I should also mention that as an agnostic, I don't "celebrate" the cross-quarter days with any sort of ritual, rather just preferring to acknowledge in my own quiet way the genious of distant ancestors (and indeed those who built the passage-tombs of Ireland 5,000 years ago who are not, in fact, related to us genetically but whom we might think of as ancestors in spirit) who constructed huge astronomically aligned monuments all those millennia ago.
The fact that Saint Brigid's Day is celebrated on 1st February is most likely a convenience of the Gregorian Calendar. The fact that it falls CLOSE to the date of Imbolc is significant, and probably tells us something of probable common origins of both celebrations. Just as Christmas Day falls about four days after winter solstice, and Easter is calculated by the first full moon after vernal equinox, Brigid's Day conveniently occurs close to a signficant solar astronomical date.
Imbolc is that time of year when the ewe's milk comes - which is precisely the meaning Cormac gives for Imbolc in his famous 10th century glossary - "Óimelc ('beginning of spring'), i.e. ói-melg 'ewe'milk', i.e. that is the time that sheep's milk comes..."
It is a curious, if not fascinating, quirk of Cormac's Glossary that under his entry for "Brigit", he writes entirely about the "pagan" or pre-Christian Brigid, the one who was a "poetess, daughter of the Dagda". Dagda was the chief of the Tuatha Dé Danann, the deities who are associated with the Stone Age monuments in mythology. He was the one who built Newgrange (Síd in Broga) and who controlled the weather and the harvest. Cormac (a bishop and king of Cashel) does not refer to the Saint Brigid, even though he was a religious man and her hagiographies (saint biographies) date as early as the 6th century. 
Cormac makes no mention either of Brigid when he writes about Óimelc (Imbolc). There may never have been a distinct connection between Brigid (either the pagan or Christian Brigid) and Imbolc, but there are more learned scholars than me who may be able to shed light on that subject.
Calculating Imbolc
We can fairly quickly determine the actual date of Imbolc 2023 using simple maths. As Imbolc is said to lie halfway between winter solstice and vernal equinoxes (measured in days, not in the apparent position of the sun at sunrise on those dates!), we can find out how many days lie between winter solstice and spring equinox and divide by two.
Winter solstice 2022, which I was delighted to celebrate at Síd in Broga for five mornings last December, fell at exactly 9.47pm on Wednesday 21st December. That was the moment of the sun's lowest declination in the sky.
Spring equinox 2023 will occur at 9.24pm on Monday, 20th March 2023.
There are, according to my calculations, 89 days between 21st December 2022 and 20th March 2023. Divide by two and we get 44.5 days.  Adding those 44 and a half days to 21st December, we find that the cross-quarter date of Imbolc in 2023 falls sometime in the early hours of 4th February 2023.
Easy peasy.
If you want EVIDENCE that this is an astronomical date that was marked in pre-Christian and in fact prehistoric Ireland, you only need visit Dumha na nGiall (The Mound of the Hostages at Tara) or Cairns U and L at Loughcrew, which are all aligned towards sunrise at the time of year when the sun is halfway between winter solstice and spring equinox (in days).
Cairn L in particular features a most beautiful visual spectacle in which the Imbolc sun rises out of a ruined cairn on another hill, Carrigbrack, and shines its light on to a slender limestone pillar in the chamber of the cairn, scattering light onto the largest and most decorated of its chamber stones. This event is shown in the photo below, and described in some detail in my Mythical Ireland book.
Significance of cross-quarter days 
But the cross-quarter dates are not just arbitrary mathematical calculations. They all coincide with observable and noticeable changes in the weather, the length of day and the landscape itself. Imbolc is the time when the ewes come into milk, when the first flowers appear and when the day noticeably lengthens.
Bealtaine (the cross-quarter date halfway between spring equinox and summer solstice) marks the beginning of summer and the trees coming into leaf. Lughnasa (halfway between summer solstice and autumn equinox) marks the beginning of the harvest, when the crops are ripe and ready for reaping. Samhain (halfway between autumn equinox and winter solstice) marks the beginning of winter, the death of vegetation, the falling of the leaves and the rapid shortening of the days that began at Lughnasa.
The cross-quarter dates are distinct visual clues to the drama of the seasons and the changing patterns of the year, and all can be related to agriculture. The builders of the Neolithic monuments of Ireland were this country's pioneering farmers.
So I wish you all a very happy Saint Brigid's Day. If you want to read more about Brigid, I recommend this article and this article. However, I will hold off on wishing you a Happy Imbolc for another few days. This Saturday, 4th February 2023, I will celebrate Imbolc. In honour of those who did so in far-off prehistory, I invite you to do the same, and not to confuse Brigid's Day with Imbolc. As convenient as the modern calendar might be, it does not take much heed of the pre-Christian calendar which was in use here in the deep mists of prehistory.

Sure look it: Joseph and Anne hitched up in Tipperary!
There's a lot about the Millses in Ireland we still don't know. I've talked on this blog before about John Mills's journey in 1835 from Ballysheehan in County Tipperary in Southern Ireland to upstate New York, settling in Warren County, the fact that the Bibby family, which John's wife Margaret was part of, also came from the same county, the scattered mentions of Millses in census fragments from Ireland from the 1820s all the way to the 1870s, and that fact that the Millses came from the "heartland of Ireland" which was then part of the United Kingdom, most of which, apart from the northern section, become it's own independent country. Apart from that, I've found records, as I've recounted on here, of Millses in Dublin and the same county, the possible similarities in terrain between Southern Ireland and upstate New York, records of various John Millses in the 1820s in the same county, and records the National Archives of Ireland has on Millses. Furthermore, I've talked about Ireland's various famines (like the potato famine), so-called "goat gangs" or that Bob Mills at one point spent time in Ireland itself, if I have that right. Whether John and Margaret, who raised the Mills family of 10 children (by my count) [1] in Glen Falls, Chester, and other towns on Warren County, [2] grew up poor we will never know, but we can say they seem to have grown up in a rural area, connecting to what I've mentioned in passing before, with the same said on whether John Mills was a canal boat captain, or all the specifics of John's early years in Warren County, even as his death date of 1876 is pretty clear.
With that being said, and since this blog is focused on "the Irish history of my familial roots" as I noted back in March 2018, with a cast of important characters, informed by the existing history of the U.S. and Ireland, I was excited to see this email from FamilySearch:

It left open the possibility of getting one of the questions I asked back in April 2018 fulfilled, at least in part: who were John Mills's parents?
The records themselves were marriage bonds of Joseph Mills and Anne Ryall! They would have, if my implications are right, possibly six children: Rachael, Thomas, Edward, Isaac, and Dorothea "Dorothy," and John. [3] Unfortunately, I have no direct evidence that Joseph and Ann are the parents, so I am only going with the supposition right now. Anyway, here are screenshots from the pages [4] which show Joseph Mills and Anne Ryall married in Emly, County Tipperary, Ireland in 1796:

Looking earlier in the set, we can see this is just an index to marriage license bonds, which means that there are likely more records somewhere on the topic. [5] Now, we know the marriage happened in Cashel and Emly. So, the latter is a parish, seat of a diocese, within the barony of Clanwilliam, county of Tipperary, and the province of Munster, which is 15 miles west from Cashel, within Limerick County, according to the 1837 A Topographic Dictionary of Ireland. Cashel, on the other hand, is a city, market, and borough, within the Middlethird Barony, county of Tipperary, and the province of Munster according to the same Topographic Dictionary. However, this doesn't answer the question: what is the diocese of Cashel and Emly? It is a Roman Catholic diocese that got the name of Cashel and Emly in May 1718. At the time that Joseph and Anne married, Thomas Bray was the ordained bishop. As it turns out, the records held by the church are not public records, so that makes looking at them a bit more tricky, as the Archdiocese of Cashel and Emily have to approve access.
So that adds another piece of the puzzle when it comes to the Millses!
