Marche Boursecours
Bonsecours Market is a two-story domed public market For more than 100 years, it was the main public market in the Montreal area. It also briefly accommodated the Parliament of United Canada for one session in 1849 and also housed Montreal City Hall between 1852 and 1878. The market's design was influenced by Dublin's Customs House.
It’s a National Historic Site of Canada since 1984

"WIFE INTERCEDED FOR THE VICTIM," Montreal Gazette. November 7, 1913. Page 3. ---- Italian Arrested Charged With Threatening to Drown Com- patriot in Cellar ---- IN SEVEN FEET OF WATER ---- Complainant Alleges He Was Let Go, but That Accused Shouted Threat After Him ---- Charged with having threatened to drown Paolo Calenzaro, in the cellar of his home in Gordon avenue, Verdun, Alphonse Ferraro was taken into custody yesterday by Lleut. Savard and Constable Golengelo and locked up at police headquarters. Calenzaro, who resides in Riel avenue, Verdun, alleges that Ferraro entered his home on Wednesday and covering him with a revolver, threatened to shoot him if he moved, and went through his pockets. Ferraro took Calenzaro's revolver away from him and then covering him with the two weapons ordered Calenzaro to walk with him from the house to his own home in Gordon avenue.
When they entered the house in Gordon avenue, Canelzaro states that Ferraro ordered his wife to open the trap door of the cellar, stating he intended to drown him. Calenzaro alleges that he was given to understand that there was seven feet of water in the cellar, and believes that he would have been drowned had not Mrs. Ferraro protested against his being thrown through the trap door. He said that he was allowed to leave the house, but that Ferraro shouted after him that he would get him yet.
Calenzaro laid a complaint against Ferraro yesterday, on which a warrant was issued by Judge Lafontaine for his arrest. Ferraro, who is a market gardener, was taken into custody when he drove his team into the city to be ready to do business this morning at Bonsecours market.
Ferraro and Cafénzaro are Italians. They are said to have had a quarrel a few weeks ago at a party, since when there has been bad blood between them.
Lieut. Savard and Constable Conlegelo went out to Ferraro's house in Gordon avenue, Verdun, last night to search for the two revolvers with which Calenzaro claims to have been threatened, but as there was no one at home they could not get into the house.
Ferraro will appear before Judge Lafontaine in the Arraignment Court this morning.

Thursday September 29/2022
Today we walked around old Montreal. We started with the old Irish basilica and then walked through the Chinese quarter. I don’t think I would call it china town.
Vigar train station and the historic house of Sir George Etienne Cartier were both closed, so we visited the house of Pierre du Calvert and the Bonsecours Chapel founded by Marguerite-Bourgeoys.
A walk through the Bonsecours market and along rue Saint-Paul, followed by a circuit around the old port, brought us into Jacques Cartier place.
We looked at the gardens and house of Montreal‘s first mayor, situated across the street from City Hall, and corner to the courts.
Our final stop was at the Basilica Notre Dame and place d’arms.
We walked back through the financial district past several historic banks to our hotel.

You may be someone who looks forward to summer each year because it gives you an opportunity to rest, unwind, and enjoy more quality time with your loved ones. Now that summer is just around the corner, it’s worthwhile to start thinking about your plans and where you want to spend your vacations this year. >>Why You May Want To Consider a Vacation Home Today Bankrate explains why a second home, or a vacation home, may be something worth considering: “For those who are able, buying a second home is suddenly more appealing, as remote working became the norm for many professionals during the pandemic. Why not work from the place where you like to vacation — the place where you want to live? If you don’t work remotely, a vacation home could still be at the top of your wish list if you have a favorite getaway spot that you visit often. It beats staying in a tiny hotel room or worrying about rental rates each time you want to take a trip.” So, if you’re looking for an oasis, you may be able to make it a second home rather than just the destination for a trip. If you could see yourself soaking up the sun in a vacation home, you may want to start your search. Summer is a popular time to buy vacation homes. By beginning the process now, you could get ahead of the competition. The first step is working with a local real estate advisor who can help you find a home in your desired location. A professional has the knowledge and resources to help you understand the market, what homes are available and at what price points, and more. They can also walk you through all the perks of owning a second home and how it can benefit you. “Sugar Hoarding Charge Is Made,” Montreal Star. March 18, 1942. Page 3. ---- Board Official Says Farmers Are Getting 100-Pound Lots ---- Farmers from the outlying districts of Montreal have been coming to market here twice a week of the sugar and returning with 100-pound bags of sugar, in violation of rationing regulations, it has been learned by officials of the Wartime Prices and Trade Board.
A preliminary investigation has already been made, L. C. Robitaille, local prices and supply representative of the board, stated today. He added that steps are being taken to put an end to this practice which, he pointed out, carries stiff penalties.
It has been a a long-standing custom, Mr. Robitaille pointed out, for farmers coming to market to exchange their produce with jobbers and wholesale merchants various necessities. It was a convenient arrangement for the farmers, but inquiries have shown that a large proportion of them have been coming to Bonsecours, Maisonneuve or other markets in Montreal and regularly returning with nothing but sugar in quantities from one 100-pound bag to several.
According to the sugar rationing regulations, the allotment of sugar is three-quarters of a pound per person per week, he said, so it is quite apparent that many farmers have been hoarding sugar.
"In our inquiry, we we obtained the names of a number of the merchants and farmers who have been dealing in illegal amounts of sugar," he said, "and have given warning that unless the practice stops immediately, severe action will be taken invoking the penalties provided for such offences."
