Summary: On November 2nd, 1983, the fire that killed Mary also took Sam, leaving John to raise Dean to be a hunter. Thirty-two years later, following a violent encounter with some demons, a dying John reveals to Dean that he recently discovered that Sam and Mary are still alive. He also tells Dean that he must kill Sam if he can’t save him.
Grieving, confused, and with no educational background other than a GED, Dean manages to find a way to go “undercover” as a student at Stanford Law School where his brother is currently studying. What he discovers is that there’s something big brewing; an Apocalypse waiting to happen, and that he needs to find a way to stop it. It also doesn’t help that Dean is falling for one of his professors and a fellow hunter — Castiel Novak, who may or may not really be who he says he is.
Excerpt:
Dean had been stabbed.
Oh, dammit.
He fell to his knees, pain taking over everything, the dim street lights forming halos as his vision doubled. His attacker stood there and watched, and Dean wanted to say something — yell, ask her what she wanted, but… the pain. The pain was excruciating.
Blackness crept along the edges of his vision. He fell backwards, body hitting the ground. This was not how he’d planned on going. He needed… there was so much work to do. He couldn’t die. Not now.
Dean’s vision wavered and he knew he was about to lose his battle soon. His attacker was still there, unmoving like a marble statue, and he wondered if she was having her fun.
Moments later, she finally opened her mouth. “Goodbye, Dean Winchester,” she said, while starting to walk away from his misery. Her suit-clad form trembled in the blurriness of his diminishing vision. He listened to her footsteps recede, and wondered if anyone from the bar might help him. Maybe if someone came out of there…
A fluttering sound, like the flapping of giant wings. Footsteps, and a gravelly voice that spoke. “You are not supposed to be here, Sister.”
A sigh, and Dean’s assailant replied. “And are you?”
“Yes.”
There was a scuffle — blows being exchanged with the answering grunts of bodies being hit, but Dean didn’t care anymore. The lights flickered some more and Dean’s vision blurred in and out as he let go, eternal bliss finally taking over his body. Maybe this is where Dad was… maybe Dean would finally find him now.
More footsteps. Dean flinched, consciousness whittling away. He could see the shadow of someone bending over him as his eyes closed and made way to the inky blackness.
Suddenly, there were warm hands on him, his shoulders.
“Dean?”
It was that gravelly voice again. The same strange pair of hands also cupped his face, gentle but firm, a light behind Dean’s eyelids. Maybe the demon would have enough mercy to kill him now. He could hear a high-pitched ringing. This was it. This was it.
The pain vanished as suddenly as it had started. Wait, what?
Dean was just barely able to open his eyes in time to see a shadowy figure over him, electric blue eyes glowing in the moonlight. He tried to sit up but his saviour held Dean’s left shoulder in a firm grip, coaxing him to lie down again.
“Rest, Dean,” he said, his voice so strong that it almost reverberated. Then he stood up and started to leave. Dean’s eyes fluttered as he saw his saviour walk away with his cape billowing behind him — was that really a cape? Clearly, he had lost a lot of blood, because he had to be imagining this. He had to be dreaming of how the street lights burst along the man’s path, showering him in sparks until he was gone, eventually vanishing into the night.

emma - love her. that's dean's baby girl<3 oughh. he could've saved her. he wanted to save her. he saw her as his and he watched her die in front of him and he never got to properly process any of that (what's new honestly? this man has never been given the chance to process any of his trauma. for 40 years !! (+40 hell yrs))
aaron - love you stoner gay<3 he was dean's gay thing. he smoked those pages. we stan.
amy friggin pond - *the office meme* shut up about [amy pond] !! shut up about [amy pond] !! anyways, she was not some vigilante killing off the horrible people of the world. she was killing petty criminals. that's all.
paul the bartender - gotta be honest with you all, did not really remember this man until very recently when i saw a post abt him and sam's dynamic. no real opinions on him except fun for queer sam truthers.
lee webb - i love him as a foil to cas. that is his function 2 me. finally a MAN as a plot device<3 also, good for stanford era dean brainworms. but still crucially i used him as a device to reveal more about dean + his own internal struggles with sexuality / masculinity / desire / dreams of life beyond hunting. sorry lee you are a literary device to me first and foremost<3 but i do enjoy you.
brady the demon - interesting + messed up. like godd sam was surrounded by demons !! were any of his friends real ?? (also another fun character for queer sam truthers) tangent but. imagine jess was a demon the whole time too and her death was faked to act as a catalyst for sam to get back into hunting and lead him to the other special children + azazel etc etc. imagine jess was meg ????? ok but anyways back to brady, yea i don't have like super strong feelings abt him, he's whatever. cool character if you're doing sam explorations.
that one nurse sam drank - fucked up but also def should be talked abt more in sam studies, like i actually do not hear much abt her ever really ?
more thoughts abt everyone listed in this poll. these are just my personal thoughts on them. it's fine if you don't feel the same, we can have differing opinions on fictional characters.

NOIR CITY 20 at Oakland's Grand Lake Theatre Day 8: RAW DEAL (7:30) & HE WALKED BY NIGHT (9:15). Intros by Eddie Muller. Full festival details and tickets available at www.NoirCity.com
Friday • January 27
DOUBLE FEATURE
7:30 PM
RAW DEAL
Social worker Marsha Hunt and gangster's moll Claire Trevor duke it out for the soul of homme fatal Dennis O'Keefe in this rambunctious display of quintessential noir pulp. O'Keefe busts out of the slammer determined to get even with shyster gang-boss Raymond Burr, who wants O'Keefe dead before he reaches his San Francisco hideout. Stunning images by legendary cinematographer John Alton make this arguably the most visually stylish noir of them all. As Eddie likes to say, it's "Pure Pulp for Noir People."
Originally released May 26, 1948. Eagle-Lion Films, 79 minutes. Screenplay by John C. Higgins and Leopold Atlas, based on the story "Corkscrew Alley" by Arnold Armstrong and Audrey Ashley. Produced by Edward Small. Directed by Anthony Mann.
9:15 PM
HE WALKED BY NIGHT
In this landmark noir, a psychotic loner (Richard Basehart) uses his genius for electronics to commit robberies while evading the police. When he graduates to murder, L.A.'s finest, including Scott Brady and methodical Jack Webb (who was immediately inspired to create Dragnet), pull out a few modern manhunting techniques of their own. The desperate hunt tracks the killer through—and beneath—cityscapes stunningly photographed by the great John Alton. Don't miss this classic in all its 35mm glory!
Originally released November 24, 1948. EagleLion Films, 79 minutes. Screenplay by John C. Higgins, from a story by Crane Wilbur. Produced by Bryan Foy and Robert Kane. Directed by Alfred Werker and Anthony Mann.

Late heartbreak, again, as North End declare too soon.
Another added time defeat saw North End go down 1-2 in this Sunday lunchtime kick off at Elland Road. After taking a second minute lead the host drew level four minutes later making it a very bright start for the 36,570 inside an aging looking Elland Road and those watching at home on Sky. Leeds certainly had more of the ball from that point on but I thought North End would have been good value for the draw albeit with a bit of luck. A triple substitution thirteen minutes from the end saw North End effectively declare offering no attacking presence but we conceded the sucker punch four minutes into added time when Ryan Ledson handled in the area for what looked a nailed on penalty and Piroe won the points for Leeds. It was tough on North End but once again questions will be asked about inviting pressure late in the game and not offering an attacking outlet.
North End made four changes to the side that beat Bristol City last Saturday with three of them being through illness. Woodman, Holmes and Osmajic were all out with a bug and Alan Browne dropped to the bench still feeling a stomach strain. In came Dai Cornell, Riis, Keane and Frokjaer. Within two minutes North End were ahead when Millar`s cross from the left was turned in by Keane to give the boys the perfect start. However North Ends joy was short `lived when after six minutes Leeds were level as poor defending saw Dan James head home unmarked at the back post after a cross from the left. Five minutes later Millar had a shot from the inside left position well saved by Meslier in the Leeds goal. The game evened out a little with the home side looking to play through the lines and North End offering a good outlet on the counter attack. North End went in level at the break after a battling first half and a solid show all round except for the goal concession.
No changes at the break for Ryan Lowe as we looked to carry on the good work from the first half. Leeds did look a little more dangerous as they tried to use the full width of the pitch and expose North End down the flanks. Three chances went begging for Leeds as North End were struggling with the pace of the home side. The game was spoiled by a series of soft bookings from referee Webb which looked to have a distinct home advantage to them. Ledson came on to replace McCann with twenty minutes to go as North End started to defend deeper and deeper. Brady, Browne and Stewart were then introduced as Ryan Lowe declared and tried to hold on to what we had but offering absolutely nothing up at the other end. Just when we looked like claiming a point Ledson gave the penalty away with two minutes of added time left. Piroe made no mistake sending Cornell the wrong way and igniting joyous celebrations inside Elland Road. It may have been that Leeds would have scored anyway if the three subs hadn`t been made but to leave Stewart up on his own offering virtually nothing was a poor surrender in my book and North End went down to their twelfth defeat in the last twenty one league games.
This wasnt one of North End`s sideways and backwards performances but I would much rather we had taken a chance and leave at least two attacking players on late in the game. The wind was really swirling and the long ball into the middle of the Leeds defence may have given North End an outlet. So it is won five, drawn four and lost twelve of the last twenty one league games. Just nineteen points from those games which means we have been playing relegation football for almost half a season. Leeds away always looked a tough fixture but some of those defeats particularly at home have been against sides well below us in the league. You get the impression from the vibes coming out of the club that the board will keep faith with the manager not least of which because we are sailing close to the wind on FFP. I fully understand that but I am afraid the club may well reap as they sow come season card renewal time.

Unsung Science Podcast: Giving Voice To Untold Scientific Breakthroughs
Podcasting is particularly adept at science shows. Dope Labs, Science Vs, The Disappearing Spoon, and Unexplained are just a few of the noteworthy podcasts. Perhaps it is the lack of the visual component that challenges these shows to explain the science so efficiently using only words and sounds. It's not like you can wow your audience with an image from the Webb Telescope, and then sit back while your audience "oohs and ahhs."
Since science is such a broad and discursive topic, successful science podcasts have a "hook" that is designed to attract listeners.
Unsung Science, produced by Simon & Schuster and CBS News, uses as its hook "The untold stories of mind-blowing achievements in science and tech."
What makes this science podcast so ear worthy is its excellent premise, skilled narrative storytelling, and superb host, taking you behind the scenes into the worlds of the people who’ve built the best in transportation, entertainment, food and other areas. What’s unique about these stories is that they veer from the well-traveled path of scientific discovery storytelling.
No Lindbergh, Alexander Graham Bell, and Thomas Edison here. Instead, listeners hear the untold stories of mind-blowing achievements that don't show up in your daily news feed.
Some of my favorite episodes include the May 19th episode about David Peterson, the one man who makes a full-time living from creating, maintaining and safeguarding invented languages such as Star Trek's Klingon, and Dothraki and High Valyrian from HBO's Game Of Thrones.
Want to ensure that your first date from a dating app goes sideways? Speak Klingon to your date as you explain your hobbies.
Another favorite is also a recent one about how scientists at Colgate spent five years and millions of the company's dollars to design a recyclable tube of toothpaste. Then, Colgate made its patent available to other toothpaste makers. Wonders will never cease.
Unsung Science began in September 2021 and is in its second season. My favorite show of season one has to be the Baby Carrots episode. We learn that baby carrots are not really "babies" but the invention of a California carrot farmer and his family. The years-long saga of perfecting baby carrots by this farmer is an uplifting tale of perseverance, ingenuity, and imagination. After listening, you'll never look at carrots the same way.
The secret weapon of Unsung Science is the creator / host David Pogue. You've probably seen him on TV on CBS Sunday Morning, perhaps the best morning show on television.
Pogue can handle narrative storytelling like Tom Brady could throw a football. He's master-class good at keeping listeners interested. Pogue also doesn't take himself or the subject matter too seriously. There's that sense of good-natured cynicism and raised-eyebrow humor that keeps the show from becoming too science-geeky.
Pogue has superb narrative balance, explaining science, then waggishly pointing out the idiosyncratic tale surrounding the breakthrough.
Pogue's resume makes me realize that I am a serial underachiever.
David Pogue was the New York Times weekly tech columnist from 2000 to 2013. He’s a six-time Emmy winner for his stories on CBS Sunday Morning, a New York Times bestselling author, a five-time TED speaker, host of 20 NOVA science specials on PBS, and creator/host of the CBS News/Simon & Schuster podcast Unsung Science.
He’s written or cowritten more than 120 books, including dozens in the Missing Manual tech series, which he created in 1999; six books in the For Dummies line (including Macs, Magic, Opera, and Classical Music); two novels (one for middle-schoolers); his three bestselling Pogue’s Basics books of tips and shortcuts (on Tech, Money, and Life); his how-to guides, iPhone Unlocked and Mac Unlocked; and his 2021 magnum opus, How to Prepare for Climate Change.
After graduating summa cum laude from Yale in 1985 with distinction in music, Pogue spent ten years conducting and arranging Broadway musicals in New York. He has won a Loeb Award for journalism, two Webby awards, and an honorary doctorate in music.
Enough Pogue, now back to Unsung Science. The show offers listeners a learning experience, a science lesson that doesn't hurt your head, and a sense of things are always not what they seem, all while chuckling and smiling.
This is one of my top recommendations for a podcast, science or otherwise. Check out Unsung Science and if you don't like it, feel free to contact me and tell me that I am full of it. Of course, I will only accept such feedback in Klingon or Dothraki.
